i am diagnosed with self distraction and i have adhd and I just find it so hard to stay focused. It's aufull feeling that I'm going to be like this for the rest of my life.. This video is so relatable, I was even going to cry in that part

1. Write down the time you wake up 2. 10-15min walk 3. Drink saltwater 4. Drink athletic green 5. 90min work 6. Physical exercise 7. Cold shower 8. Have breakfast/brunch/lunch at around 11am Edit: don't forget to leave your phone behind, this is the key to success in this routine. Thanks for noticing! And personally, I prefer to write down the goals right after noting the time I wake up, that helps me redefine and reaffirm my visions for the future.
If I only do 90 mins of real work before noon, and step out of the office to go exercise for an hour, my boss would be like: WTF? Get back to your desk!!

I felt that moment in the car so hard. Literally in the same situation with my podcast that burnt me out and now I'm dealing with trauma from not living up to my own expectations and dreams. It's soul crushing and something I'm still learning to cope with and fight back from. Crazy.

People working for someone else split it half and half with their employer, roughly. People working for themselves pay the whole thing. That was true under Obama, Trump, and Biden.

No one talks about the self-discipline required to be the selfpreneur or freelancer. This is incredibly relatable. Know you’re not alone. I’ve tested the 45min work, 15min break idea which has helped. I “only” have to do 45 mins at a time and this feels more achievable. Thought it was worth a share to try!

Totally agree. I have ran my own businesses for twenty years now and the main obstacle has always been myself. Just because a person is creative and able to think of great ideas doesn't mean we're the best people at carrying out all tasks related to getting to the goal. From studying my degree this seemed to me to be the biggest difference between Leadership and Management. Ideas people and people who handle the tasks given to them to achieve the idea- very rare do you find both abilities in the same person. I know I don't excel in both areas.

Brother, you have a huge heart and an immense amount of determination. I too was unable to show up in my life at full capacity since my dad passed in 2012. I ended up with colitis amongst other extreme dis ease within my body. Aug 12 2023 I chose to do a 45 day fast, that I created for myself, of all misalignments in my life that were keeping me from operating out of my highest form. During thisnfast I also feasted for 45 days on all alignments. I used wisdom that I have gained from life, teachers and coaches that I have had the pleasure of receiving thought out my life. Doing this for myself brought so much energy and clarity and drive to serve and do my good works. Thank you for doing this for yourself, for having self worth and for being vulnerable. These traits create unconditional love within our hearts. Look at all the love and opportunity for others to build their faith in themselves. Thank you again for sharing your journey!

And can we also talk about the fact that this is why a "9 to 5" (a dirty word on the internet, I know) can be so vital for many people? It not only forces you to learn routine, it forces you to learn that doing hard things pays off. Not everyone's just automatically built to self-start and be a natural entrepreneur, and that's okay. There is nothing wrong with spending your 20s in a good, rewarding 9 to 5 to learn the tools to become professionally independent in your 30s. It's not degrading or failure.
Increasingly lost 20-something year-old here. Submitting to a 9 - 5 (even loosely) has been gradually changing my life for these exact reasons, both for work and study. I appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment.
I can relate. There’s people like me who thrive with interacting with people, being on a team, and getting out of the house. I tried the solopreneur route for over a year (doing something I enjoyed), but burned out. I discovered how important it is for me to do things, especially work, with others.

Of all the videos relating to sleep and morning routines, this is the very best that I have seen. I related shockingly well to your "car talk," in that I realized that I've felt the very same thing about myself for several years now: maybe I'm just not the person I thought I was. For 6+ years, I have been wondering what the heck I'm doing - and, following 2020, that feeling definitely became exacerbated. I'm now asking myself if it's because of my horrible routine(s) that I've been doubting myself and feeling unsure of what my goals and career interests even are. Maybe I AM the kind of person who wants to and can do meaningful work; maybe I am a morning person; maybe I would be interested in 'career A' if I were more focused in general. I honestly didn't think that a UA-cam video would ever make me feel this way, so I'm so thankful I clicked on this video at 3am. I appreciate just how genuine and sincere your message and efforts are. This could be the late night fumes talking - but I feel inspired to tackle a similar routine, because I'm just blown away with what this one has done for you. Can you please post a one year update? An honest review on if you're still doing this routine and on what worked/what didn't, biggest speed bumps/hurdles, what you wished you kept doing, what you're glad that you're still doing etc. If you've fallen off the bandwagon, document yourself getting back onto a routine that worked for you. As humans, we all stumble so this would probably be an encouraging video for many, many people to watch.
That car talk summed up my last two years. I'm 23 y.o., I work from home since the beggining of the pandemic and still feel like I could go higher and do better. Seriously thinking about giving this routine a try and see if I can see any improvments! Great video, and cheers from Portugal!

I feel similarly; school burnt me out, and then the pandemic hit and allowed me to sink deep into a rut. I managed to worsen my procrastination habit which I picked up in college, and my sleep suffered as well. I quickly began feeling as though I no longer had the capacity / strength / energy to do any exceptionally meaningful work. That said, my hope is that I can utilize some of what I learned from this video and improve my self-discipline and even my self-esteem. So far, this is perhaps the most genuine and sincere of this type of video that I have found. The "car talk" hit me right in the face, because it's exactly how I've been feeling about myself. I hope I can prove to myself that I can do so much more than for which I'm barely giving myself credit. I'm not sure about the cold showers and the saltwater... but, I'm certainly willing to try everything else suggested.

me too, for the last 5 years. I though I was still on depression although a felt completely cured. One day I met an astrologer and explained to me that due to some combination of signs I keep loosing my goals and don't have a sense of time😄 (that's also what my mother used to tell me!). I am the queen of procrastination 👸The funny thing is that even in that situation what I can do to help myself is to keep a routine and stick to it! With astrology at least is way less the guilty feelings you have. You stop judging yrself and also stop incriminate yr parents that they are responsible for what is happening to you (that's what we usually do😊)!!

Can totally relate. I’m not a morning person and I’ve been self employed for a decade. Walks in the morning, Ac vinegar, water and electrolytes first thing have been a game changer. I find when I work at my local coffee shop for a few hours I get more done than the same amount of time at home. The change of location, the white noise of people around me, and an americano makes a huge difference in my ability to focus. I also notice an improvement in focus working on my balcony in nice weather.

Great experimental design and data tracking. I also relate to your sentiments about self-motivating and the phone. Here's the version I will try to balance the sentiment with having two small children (albeit with the benefit of daycare). Modified Routine: - 6:30 Wake, record time, get dressed, change baby's diaper, and dress him for the day - 6:45 15 min walk outside with the baby in a stroller - 7:00 Saltwater drink, breakfast for kids, pack lunches - 7:45 Drop kids off at daycare/school - 8:15 90-minute work block, drink more water :-) - 9:45 Exercise, drink more water - 10:45 Cold shower - 11:00 Early lunch Phone: Because I need to keep the phone on for daycare/school emergencies, I'll set the phone to "Do not disturb" with overrides for my partner, daycare, school, and any other double calls. However, the phone will be in my baby's room, and I'll take the baby monitor to my office. That way, I can hear important calls but must work much harder to go check my phone.
Man, that moment of self-reflection in the car felt like I was looking in the mirror. Wanting so badly to accomplish more, making radical lifestyle changes, and still not being able to force your brain to comply. Take this with a grain of salt because the root of why people function the way they do varies, but earlier this year I was diagnosed with ADHD at the ripe age of 33. Still dialing in the right medication, working to build healthy habits in therapy, and undoing a lifetime of bad coping mechanisms, but I can’t stress enough how life-changing that diagnosis has been. Appreciate the vulnerability in the video, my dude, and hope the lifestyle changes stick.

As someone who has started this routine for about a month now. The lack of motivation was making me crazy. This helps me so much to understand it's normal and the thing I need to do right now. Thank you so much for this
1- wake up around 06:30 am 2- walk, get sunlight in your eyes 3- no caffeine for 90 mins after waking up 4- drink water with sea salt 5- fast until 11:00 am 6- 90 mins of cognitive work 7- physical exercise for an hour (i prefer stretching and light work since we need energy for college or work) 8- cold shower (begginers don't start with freezing water, work it up)

Hey, you’ve done an incredible job making some healthy changes and you deserve every ounce of joy this brings you. I just hope that you don’t base your whole self worth on how productive you are because you seem like a really great guy without all that too. People with dopamine shortages often turn to interacting with their phone as a somewhat unhealthy dopamine seeking behavior (FaceTiming a friend can be healthy, doomscrolling twitter almost never is). Working alone is super hard because you don’t get the little dopamine boost from interaction with others. I just hope anyone reading this can have self compassion whenever they are struggling and consider it’s not their fault or an indicator of laziness to struggle with focus

I used to drink 10 tall cans of beer a day for years. But after I turned 27 I decided to try ending my showers with 3 minutes of showering in cold water and stop drinking cold turkey. I feel like a super hero. I finally feel in control. Started a 6 week workout program and have been making sure to set at least 2 goals for the next day and completing them. It's crazy how effective, willingly putting yourself through something struggling is in improving your overall mental health and sense of determination for the day. Master roshi always said: " one must eat, sleep, play and learn something every day" and he was right. 💪🏻

Daily Meditation and limiting phone use helped me overcome the focus aspect in nearly every aspect of my life. Meditation is really just the act of building focus, where you're focusing on mindfulness and awareness, so you're not on autopilot as it were. I'd love to see what your experience is like after trying it for 20 mins a day over 4 weeks. Nevertheless, great to see you smash through that plateau!
It was hard to hear your struggles man, that's incredibly rough. When you said you are fighting against something, I really relate. For me it was caused by ADHD. Other things can cause executive function issues and difficulty with productivity too. But that's what it was for me, and diagnosis changed my life.
I also had to immediately think of my experience with ADHD... I know there are many other reasons for executive disfunction but it definitely felt similar to a lot of my struggles.
Same! Watching this, felt so close to home. I left my 11 year teaching career due to burnout, and started working for myself and it’s been SUCH a challenge to motivate myself. Not just for work but even for all the things I usually enjoy.

That was great! An honest coverage of your journey. It's my personal experience that when I am doing: 1. Service for the community 2. Practicing meditation 2x a day for ~20min. I don't feel pulled by any distraction. If we look at it deep enough why do we want to be productive at all in the first place? 🤔 Just because we feel great about ourselves? ☺ And when is it that we really feel great about ourselves - it's always when whatever we do makes others lives better. 😇 Our nature is to share and make world a better place. That's why most of the unproductive habits creep in when we are not doing enough for the society at large not just our close ones. So being productive despite of having the phone beside me is a challenge I keep for myself. And whenever I do the above activities I am totally focused😄

Man, the "not the person I thought I was" part REALLY hit home. Just imagine that feeling, except being caused by a decade of hardcore addiction and even after losing 29 personal friends since high school (our generation has lost more to opiates in single years than the entirety of the Vietnam conflict) you still can't break it, because it is quite literally your brain & body SCREAMING at you to get what it needs to function normally. Doesn't matter how much you hate it, doesn't matter that you were the one kid out of all your friends that was all about doing everything all natural and this is totally against every fiber in your being, not even really liking alcohol growing up. Doesn't matter your background or family history at all either. Just a few injuries in the group of friends later, EVERYONE is hooked before they even know what withdrawals really are. You start to hate your SELF, start to think that it's over with you f*cked up, you'll never be the same, you may as well end it because this is who you are now. That was 4 years ago when I felt like that, now? I'm teaching guitar & music production full time, living out my dream & passion with ZERO want for an escape like before. Playing in a few different bands/projects, and gaining more & more students every week. No matter what they tell you (be it NA, AA, your family, society, whoever) they're WRONG, you CAN move past addiction, and start brand new life. It's just pretty hard when you're forced to go to meetings and sit around a bunch of sorrowful (although rightfully) addicts and are forced to fully commit to their mentality, of which the first tenant is "once an addict, always an addict." No offense if you're someone who groups help, but every single person I know who's gone that route has circled back several times. You need a support structure, but a group that literally tells you that you're a junkie every time you walk through the door isn't healthy in my opinion. Positivity and seeing what life could be like after, is what got me here. Hopefully this falls on someone who needs to hear it. You CAN make it out, I promise.

@@scotty3223 I think cold turkey is the only way to go since once you have an addiction it is chronic. I can recommend Russell Brand on this topic, he wen't through an abstinence based recovery (guided in a proper facility) and it is a great example and motivator :). Really strong editing in this one so props for that. Your car speech is one I do mentally all the time. What gets me through is my present self, acts almost exclusively in my future self's best interest. A good life is a life well lived. Trust that you work in your own best interest and continue to be a good person.

Started off and on in 2000 work from home. Remember the loss of Face to face and bothered me and most of the people who physically worked there I would never socialize with. Determined if I was sad then do it sad but Git it done. Then Check your work. Embrace solutude. That said solutude is easier when you are older.
When I got a dog, I had to take him out for his little puppy walks first thing in the morning, and that made me feel great right away. The morning walk before anything else is key. When he got older I used to sometimes get up before the sun on weekends, take an hour hike before anything else with him. When I got home I would wake the family, and make breakfast. Those were the best days ever. So much energy, and I felt like I got shit done.
Thank you for this - I had a HUGE realization when you shut off your phone. Actually, I TOTALLY FREAKED OUT. I'm not a scroller but I feel this huge sense of accountability to always be available to my family and friends... my mother (who transitioned to her next life over 25 years ago) insisted I be available all the time (even when working) because she was very ill. I continue to worry constantly about missing an "urgent" call. I've set up my life so I go to the gym from 530-630am because this is the time I know everyone else is still sleeping so I can put my phone away while I'm in the pool because there's a very low likelihood anyone will call. I constantly check to make sure my phone battery is always at 90% or more in case something happens and we lose power because I must have access to my phone. This is creating incredible stress for me and I MUST CHANGE THIS NOW. Thank you for catalyzing this insight!! (And BTW I wrote this on the computer because I'm practicing having my phone turned off for 15 minutes. I feel somewhat ill, but this is a start.)
Would be interesting to see a follow-up to this. It's easy to commit to something for 30 days because there's an "endpoint", but are you still keeping up with the routine even though there's a lot less accountability (i.e. you're not doing it for a 'project' anymore) ?
The usual time for forming a habbit is around 90 days, 3 months. So if you are able to stick with a routine for that long probably it stays. Of course that doesn't mean you can't fall back, but isn't a "chore" anymore.
As much as I love to see his positive attitude after doing all that, reviewing his blood work he said everything was better, but it is not. He doesn't read the paper right because he does not understand the numbers (eg. lower number does not automatically mean better). Seeing his testosterone went up, the first column is the result, but that means, reading the results, a lot of the things got worse. HDL that is the good kind of cholesterol is the same, while LDL (bad) got higher and the total cholesterol is higher as well (eating habits). His morning cortisol also skyrocketed, which means his morning stress increased a lot (still in the norm, but way higher), that can cause a lot of issues if it increases more (think of anxiety for example). His insulin also went a bit up but negligible amount so far (still too high though). TSH dropped too, but still in the norm unless it continues to drop... So yes, the testosterone improved a lot, and that's great. But it also seems like this put a lot of stress on his body. I would honestly try other methods to increase the TST... Granted of course the bloodwork is influenced by many things he did not specify or even thought about, so I would just keep monitoring and see if it continues to worsen or not. All and all, the amount of stress is not worth it imho, there are more not as drastic ways to increase tst. I am not saying Huberman's routine is bad, but everyone is different and not everything will sit well with you. I know that cold showers/plunges literally skyrocket my stress for the rest of the day, so they are a huge no no for me for example.
Huberman’s routine sounds harder than it is. He built this routine to help increase dopamine, therefore it has built a built in motivation mechanism. For me the key part was the early morning light exposure. And you begin to somehow crave and dread the cold showers at the same time.
@@rybosaur6860I believe Huberman has addressed the increase in morning cortisol in one of his podcasts as a positive outcome - cortisol is naturally meant to rise in the morning as it helps get you up. You want higher values in the morning. If your cortisol is low in the morning it’s not desirable.

@goal guys I went through a similar path with extreme difficulties to focus on work. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and since taking medication, it helped a LOT doing the work I was avoiding, and doing it well. Productivity habits are great, only if they last. If you will still do 6am cold showers etc in 5 years, it’s a success. I strongly advise to consider an ADHD diagnosis, not for the meds, but for you to understand your brain better.

Dude, you have no idea how many people feel exactly the way you do/did. I've been implementing many of Huberman's tips, and I have most definitely been feeling the changes for good! He's the fkn rockstar of the well-being of humanity. That being said, your video was simply so relatable, felt so honest and I loved your attention to detail on the editing of the video, as well as the little things you did, that also made me realize of the little things I do on a daily basis (mostly phone addiction related). The less people rely on phones for the social media, and understand them as a tool to improve the daily basis, the better humanity will be. I have actually started doing this routine and stumbled upon the same problem regarding motivation and I'm almost at the place of a car talk. But after this video I think I found the last piece of the puzzle. I'm not addicted to my phone but I like watching random youtube videos too much. I try to use it as education and it actually helps me to keep my english level in check, however I think it serves as a "phone" for me and I need to drastically limit youtube at least until I will be able to get my routine up and running. You sound like me! At 64, I learned that I am ADHD. WHILE I don’t medicate for it, I’m learning to manage it w organization, alarms to keep me on track, and breaks when I go off the rails and then come back to it. So far, better, but not perfect, but my self esteem and confidence has returned. I’m capable. Now I will research what else I can do to help myself b/c I’m worth it!

I’ve tested the 45min work, 15min break idea which has helped. I “only” have to do 45 mins at a time and this feels more achievable. Thought it was worth a share to try!

Totally agree. I have ran my own businesses for twenty years now and the main obstacle has always been myself. Just because a person is creative and able to think of great ideas doesn't mean we're the best people at carrying out all tasks related to getting to the goal. From studying my degree this seemed to me to be the biggest difference between Leadership and Management. Ideas people and people who handle the tasks given to them to achieve the idea- very rare do you find both abilities in the same person. I know I don't excel in both areas.

Brother, you have a huge heart and an immense amount of determination. I too was unable to show up in my life at full capacity since my dad passed in 2012. I ended up with colitis amongst other extreme dis ease within my body. Aug 12 2023 I chose to do a 45 day fast, that I created for myself, of all misalignments in my life that were keeping me from operating out of my highest form. During thisnfast I also feasted for 45 days on all alignments. I used wisdom that I have gained from life, teachers and coaches that I have had the pleasure of receiving thought out my life. Doing this for myself brought so much energy and clarity and drive to serve and do my good works.
Thank you for doing this for yourself, for having self worth and for being vulnerable. These traits create unconditional love within our hearts. Look at all the love and opportunity for others to build their faith in themselves. Thank you again for sharing your journey!

And can we also talk about the fact that this is why a "9 to 5" (a dirty word on the internet, I know) can be so vital for many people? It not only forces you to learn routine, it forces you to learn that doing hard things pays off. Not everyone's just automatically built to self-start and be a natural entrepreneur, and that's okay. There is nothing wrong with spending your 20s in a good, rewarding 9 to 5 to learn the tools to become professionally independent in your 30s. It's not degrading or failure.

Of all the videos relating to sleep and morning routines, this is the very best that I have seen. I related shockingly well to your "car talk," in that I realized that I've felt the very same thing about myself for several years now: maybe I'm just not the person I thought I was. For 6+ years, I have been wondering what the heck I'm doing - and, following 2020, that feeling definitely became exacerbated. I'm now asking myself if it's because of my horrible routine(s) that I've been doubting myself and feeling unsure of what my goals and career interests even are. Maybe I AM the kind of person who wants to and can do meaningful work; maybe I am a morning person; maybe I would be interested in 'career A' if I were more focused in general.
I honestly didn't think that a UA-cam video would ever make me feel this way, so I'm so thankful I clicked on this video at 3am. I appreciate just how genuine and sincere your message and efforts are. Can you please post a one year update? An honest review on if you're still doing this routine and on what worked/what didn't, biggest speed bumps/hurdles, what you wished you kept doing, what you're glad that you're still doing etc. If you've fallen off the bandwagon, document yourself getting back onto a routine that worked for you. As humans, we all stumble so this would probably be an encouraging video for many, many people to watch.

what kind of work do you do from home?
I feel similarly; school burnt me out, and then the pandemic hit and allowed me to sink deep into a rut. I managed to worsen my procrastination habit which I picked up in college, and my sleep suffered as well. I quickly began feeling as though I no longer had the capacity / strength / energy to do any exceptionally meaningful work. That said, my hope is that I can utilize some of what I learned from this video and improve my self-discipline and even my self-esteem. So far, this is perhaps the most genuine and sincere of this type of video that I have found. The "car talk" hit me right in the face, because it's exactly how I've been feeling about myself. I hope I can prove to myself that I can do so much more than for which I'm barely giving myself credit. I'm not sure about the cold showers and the saltwater... but, I'm certainly willing to try everything else suggested.

me too, for the last 5 years. I though I was still on depression although a felt completely cured. One day I met an astrologer and explained to me that due to some combination of signs I keep loosing my goals and don't have a sense of time😄 (that's also what my mother used to tell me!). I am the queen of procrastination 👸The funny thing is that even in that situation what I can do to help myself is to keep a routine and stick to it! With astrology at least is way less the guilty feelings you have. You stop judging yrself and also stop incriminate yr parents that they are responsible for what is happening to you (that's what we usually do😊)!!
I very much wished I had seen a video like this when I was still self-employed and going through the exact same struggle. I've now submitted to the 9-5 and have very mixed feelings about that.

Can totally relate. I’m not a morning person and I’ve been self employed for a decade. Walks in the morning, Ac vinegar, water and electrolytes first thing have been a game changer. I find when I work at my local coffee shop for a few hours I get more done than the same amount of time at home. The change of location, the white noise of people around me, and an americano makes a huge difference in my ability to focus. I also notice an improvement in focus working on my balcony in nice weather.

Great experimental design and data tracking. I also relate to your sentiments about self-motivating and the phone. Here's the version I will try to balance the sentiment with having two small children (albeit with the benefit of daycare).
Modified Routine:
- 6:30 Wake, record time, get dressed, change baby's diaper, and dress him for the day
- 6:45 15 min walk outside with the baby in a stroller
- 7:00 Saltwater drink, breakfast for kids, pack lunches
- 7:45 Drop kids off at daycare/school
- 8:15 90-minute work block, drink more water :-)
- 9:45 Exercise, drink more water
- 10:45 Cold shower
- 11:00 Early lunch

Because I need to keep the phone on for daycare/school emergencies, I'll set the phone to "Do not disturb" with overrides for my partner, daycare, school, and any other double calls. However, the phone will be in my baby's room, and I'll take the baby monitor to my office. That way, I can hear important calls but must work much harder to go check my phone.

Man, that moment of self-reflection in the car felt like I was looking in the mirror. Wanting so badly to accomplish more, making radical lifestyle changes, and still not being able to force your brain to comply.
Take this with a grain of salt because the root of why people function the way they do varies, but earlier this year I was diagnosed with ADHD at the ripe age of 33. Still dialing in the right medication, working to build healthy habits in therapy, and undoing a lifetime of bad coping mechanisms, but I can’t stress enough how life-changing that diagnosis has been.
Appreciate the vulnerability in the video, my dude, and hope the lifestyle changes stick.

Hey, you’ve done an incredible job making some healthy changes and you deserve every ounce of joy this brings you. I just hope that you don’t base your whole self worth on how productive you are because you seem like a really great guy without all that too.
People with dopamine shortages often turn to interacting with their phone as a somewhat unhealthy dopamine seeking behavior (FaceTiming a friend can be healthy, doomscrolling twitter almost never is). Working alone is super hard because you don’t get the little dopamine boost from interaction with others.
I just hope anyone reading this can have self compassion whenever they are struggling and consider it’s not their fault or an indicator of laziness to struggle with focus

I used to drink 10 tall cans of beer a day for years. But after I turned 27 I decided to try ending my showers with 3 minutes of showering in cold water and stop drinking cold turkey. I feel like a super hero. I finally feel in control. Started a 6 week workout program and have been making sure to set at least 2 goals for the next day and completing them. It's crazy how effective, willingly putting yourself through something struggling is in improving your overall mental health and sense of determination for the day. Master roshi always said: " one must eat, sleep, play and learn something every day" and he was right. 💪🏻

Daily Meditation and limiting phone use helped me overcome the focus aspect in nearly every aspect of my life. Meditation is really just the act of building focus, where you're focusing on mindfulness and awareness, so you're not on autopilot as it were.
I'd love to see what your experience is like after trying it for 20 mins a day over 4 weeks.

It was hard to hear your struggles man, that's incredibly rough. When you said you are fighting against something, I really relate. For me it was caused by ADHD.
Other things can cause executive function issues and difficulty with productivity too. But that's what it was for me, and diagnosis changed my life.
I also had to immediately think of my experience with ADHD... I know there are many other reasons for executive disfunction but it definitely felt similar to a lot of my struggles.

1. Service for the community
2. Practicing meditation 2x a day for ~20min.
I don't feel pulled by any distraction.
If we look at it deep enough why do we want to be productive at all in the first place? 🤔

And when is it that we really feel great about ourselves - it's always when whatever we do makes others lives better. 😇
Our nature is to share and make world a better place. That's why most of the unproductive habits creep in when we are not doing enough for the society at large not just our close ones.
So being productive despite of having the phone beside me is a challenge I keep for myself. And whenever I do the above activities I am totally focused😄
That car talk was real … that’s the day I’ve been growing my beard and put my self through all the hardships to grow to grow and be a proud true MAN … PAIN DOESNT STOP A MANN
Man, the "not the person I thought I was" part REALLY hit home. Just imagine that feeling, except being caused by a decade of hardcore addiction and even after losing 29 personal friends since high school (our generation has lost more to opiates in single years than the entirety of the Vietnam conflict) you still can't break it, because it is quite literally your brain & body SCREAMING at you to get what it needs to function normally. Doesn't matter how much you hate it, doesn't matter that you were the one kid out of all your friends that was all about doing everything all natural and this is totally against every fiber in your being, not even really liking alcohol growing up. Doesn't matter your background or family history at all either. Just a few injuries in the group of friends later, EVERYONE is hooked before they even know what withdrawals really are. You start to hate your SELF, start to think that it's over with you f*cked up, you'll never be the same, you may as well end it because this is who you are now. That was 4 years ago when I felt like that, now? I'm teaching guitar & music production full time, living out my dream & passion with ZERO want for an escape like before. Playing in a few different bands/projects, and gaining more & more students every week. No matter what they tell you (be it NA, AA, your family, society, whoever) they're WRONG, you CAN move past addiction, and start brand new life. It's just pretty hard when you're forced to go to meetings and sit around a bunch of sorrowful (although rightfully) addicts and are forced to fully commit to their mentality, of which the first tenant is "once an addict, always an addict." No offense if you're someone who groups help, but every single person I know who's gone that route has circled back several times. You need a support structure, but a group that literally tells you that you're a junkie every time you walk through the door isn't healthy in my opinion. Positivity and seeing what life could be like after, is what got me here. Hopefully this falls on someone who needs to hear it. You CAN make it out, I promise.
You overcame something beyond difficult than many, including myself, can’t begin to fathom. You fought for a real life, keep it up man, you will inspire others in your journey!

@@scotty3223 I think cold turkey is the only way to go since once you have an addiction it is chronic. I can recommend Russell Brand on this topic, he wen't through an abstinence based recovery (guided in a proper facility) and it is a great example and motivator :).

Really strong editing in this one so props for that. Your car speech is one I do mentally all the time. What gets me through is my present self, acts almost exclusively in my future self's best interest. A good life is a life well lived. Trust that you work in your own best interest and continue to be a good person.

Remember the loss of Face to face and bothered me and most of the people who physically worked there I would never socialize with.
Determined if I was sad then do it sad but Git it done. Then Check your work.
Embrace solutude. That said solutude is easier when you are older.
I started audio Journaling every morning 2 weeks ago, and I have to say that it is great. Just being able to get it all out and move foward is amazing
When I got a dog, I had to take him out for his little puppy walks first thing in the morning, and that made me feel great right away. The morning walk before anything else is key. When he got older I used to sometimes get up before the sun on weekends, take an hour hike before anything else with him. When I got home I would wake the family, and make breakfast. Those were the best days ever. So much energy, and I felt like I got shit done.
Thank you for this - I had a HUGE realization when you shut off your phone. Actually, I TOTALLY FREAKED OUT. I'm not a scroller but I feel this huge sense of accountability to always be available to my family and friends... my mother (who transitioned to her next life over 25 years ago) insisted I be available all the time (even when working) because she was very ill. I continue to worry constantly about missing an "urgent" call. I've set up my life so I go to the gym from 530-630am because this is the time I know everyone else is still sleeping so I can put my phone away while I'm in the pool because there's a very low likelihood anyone will call. I constantly check to make sure my phone battery is always at 90% or more in case something happens and we lose power because I must have access to my phone. This is creating incredible stress for me and I MUST CHANGE THIS NOW. Thank you for catalyzing this insight!! (And BTW I wrote this on the computer because I'm practicing having my phone turned off for 15 minutes. I feel somewhat ill, but this is a start.)
Would be interesting to see a follow-up to this. It's easy to commit to something for 30 days because there's an "endpoint", but are you still keeping up with the routine even though there's a lot less accountability (i.e. you're not doing it for a 'project' anymore) ?
The usual time for forming a habbit is around 90 days, 3 months. So if you are able to stick with a routine for that long probably it stays. Of course that doesn't mean you can't fall back, but isn't a "chore" anymore.
Once you've done something and set up a routine for like a month, it becomes sencond nature and your body wants to do it
As much as I love to see his positive attitude after doing all that, reviewing his blood work he said everything was better, but it is not. He doesn't read the paper right because he does not understand the numbers (eg. lower number does not automatically mean better). Seeing his testosterone went up, the first column is the result, but that means, reading the results, a lot of the things got worse. HDL that is the good kind of cholesterol is the same, while LDL (bad) got higher and the total cholesterol is higher as well (eating habits). His morning cortisol also skyrocketed, which means his morning stress increased a lot (still in the norm, but way higher), that can cause a lot of issues if it increases more (think of anxiety for example). His insulin also went a bit up but negligible amount so far (still too high though). TSH dropped too, but still in the norm unless it continues to drop... So yes, the testosterone improved a lot, and that's great. But it also seems like this put a lot of stress on his body. I would honestly try other methods to increase the TST... Granted of course the bloodwork is influenced by many things he did not specify or even thought about, so I would just keep monitoring and see if it continues to worsen or not. All and all, the amount of stress is not worth it imho, there are more not as drastic ways to increase tst. I am not saying Huberman's routine is bad, but everyone is different and not everything will sit well with you. I know that cold showers/plunges literally skyrocket my stress for the rest of the day, so they are a huge no no for me for example.
Huberman’s routine sounds harder than it is. He built this routine to help increase dopamine, therefore it has built a built in motivation mechanism. For me the key part was the early morning light exposure. And you begin to somehow crave and dread the cold showers at the same time.
@@rybosaur6860I believe Huberman has addressed the increase in morning cortisol in one of his podcasts as a positive outcome - cortisol is naturally meant to rise in the morning as it helps get you up. You want higher values in the morning. If your cortisol is low in the morning it’s not desirable.

@goal guys I went through a similar path with extreme difficulties to focus on work. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and since taking medication, it helped a LOT doing the work I was avoiding, and doing it well. Productivity habits are great, only if they last. If you will still do 6am cold showers etc in 5 years, it’s a success. I strongly advise to consider an ADHD diagnosis, not for the meds, but for you to understand your brain better.

Dude, you have no idea how many people feel exactly the way you do/did. I've been implementing many of Huberman's tips, and I have most definitely been feeling the changes for good! He's the fkn rockstar of the well-being of humanity. That being said, your video was simply so relatable, felt so honest and I loved your attention to detail on the editing of the video, as well as the little things you did, that also made me realize of the little things I do on a daily basis (mostly phone addiction related). The less people rely on phones for the social media, and understand them as a tool to improve the daily basis, the better humanity will be. I have actually started doing this routine and stumbled upon the same problem regarding motivation and I'm almost at the place of a car talk.
But after this video I think I found the last piece of the puzzle. I'm not addicted to my phone but I like watching random youtube videos too much. I try to use it as education and it actually helps me to keep my english level in check, however I think it serves as a "phone" for me and I need to drastically limit youtube at least until I will be able to get my routine up and running.

You sound like me! At 64, I learned that I am ADHD. WHILE I don’t medicate for it, I’m learning to manage it w organization, alarms to keep me on track, and breaks when I go off the rails and then come back to it. So far, better, but not perfect, but my self esteem and confidence has returned. I’m capable. Now I will research what else I can do to help myself b/c I’m worth it!
