She truly believed that it had to happen to save mankind from itself, and so she judged that the ruination of the lives of 75 children was worth saving the lives of potentially billions of others. Was it wrong? Yes. Was it right to preserve mankind by sacrificing only a few children? Also yes. There's an argument to be made for both decisions, which is why it makes book Halsey a far more intriguing character than the show Halsey could ever be.

Yep, while he wasn’t on the ground, he was in orbit fighting on a space station.
I think the Pillar of Autumn left before the glassing began. He did return immediately after leaving the Halo. He seen the majority of the planet glassed, and managed to save the last 8 people on the planet.
@@jsingleton3142 he left just as the glassing began and I don’t think there were 8 people left on Reach, one normal human and about 4 or 5 Spartans.
