This movie makes me sad because the animators and voice actors clearly worked hard and the writers were on crack in every meeting
I feel like the animators didn't do well either really, I like the design of the characters but I feel like lighting, colour use in most scenes and overall, the entire portrayal of the story is just as bad as the writing. It's nothing special and has no sort of emotion or care to make this movie interesting or fun.
They had us in the first half... not gonna lie
One of my most useless hobbies as a writer is to try and think of how I might rewrite bad animated movies. I like to challenge myself by seeing how something could have been improved. As one example, The Emoji Movie, I think the main kid should have been mute so that the emotional bond between him and the emojis could have been greater. The emojis themselves should have had trouble communicating with one another due to their 'one job' thing but broken out of their limited connection in parallels with the boy who eventually overcame the hurdle of communicating with the girl he liked as someone who does not have a conventional voice. Sure, I'm just an amateur and that concept is probably dumb, but regardless.
When I look at a movie like this, I feel like it could have had such a powerful narrative, even stretched out. Have the Onceler's backstory parallel O'Hare's, in a sense. Have O' Hare ask the kid about the harder things to navigate in terms of environmentally sound ideas. What about all the people that would lose their jobs? What about the people who need space for homes to be built or the critical items that rely on the material being gathered with medicinal or practical needs that have no alternatives? Swap the kid's motivation to being an inventor of sorts. Someone curious about nature and science. Have his bike me something he built so that when the seed is given to him, he can present alternative ideas or at least open a dialogue with O' Hare and the Onceler's arc can complete in a satisfying way. He failed the Lorax, but he gave this kid the opportunity to be better than him. Better than all of them were in the past.
It could've worked. I really believe that.
Meet Illumination.

I wish there was at least SOME scenes where it showed they needed a tree. Maybe like one scene, where Ted's mother complains that buying air is expensive or her insane electronic bills for a light up tree that does DISCO.
Something like that to just show they really needed a tree besides Ted "I wanna bone a girl, so I'm getting her a tree"
In my revision of this movie Ted lives in a post apocalyptic esque village. He has a sick sister whose asthma is exasperated by the crap air quality. He hears legends of the Once-ler and goes to meet him. The flashback scenes are mostly the same. The present day frame story will explore just how bad a world without trees is. People are constantly sick and coughing and Ted's sisters life expectancy gets lower every day. Ted gets the seed and plants it in his backyard with his sister staying close to it as it grows. The tree's air makes her asthma more bearable and through the coming years Ted and his sister plant more trees around the village. When Ted is old he is visited by the Lorax who thanks him for fixing the Once-ler's mistake.
@@Dalton_Boardman2000 Dude that would make an awesome short film
I mean, I feel like the whole point of the movie is that they need trees but they don’t know it, I feel like people misinterpret the villains, the big Corp midget is not the villain, he was the one to keep the town stable without trees so in a sense he saved everyone, you can’t blame him for selling people shit they want to buy, the onceler ins’t the villain either because he didn’t have bad intentions, he was just extremely retarded and didn’t replant the damn trees, the real villains are the consumers that just sat back and let it happen, the point of the movie was the consumer realizing “shiiiit we have no trees, what the fuck isn’t that what we need for oxygen and breathing and all that stuff? I mean surely we’d run out of oxygen otherwise right? Ok fuck capitalism let’s plant a fucking tree! Get out of my way Corp midget!” And that’s that
@@Dalton_Boardman2000 i believe that doesn't work either, he does it cause he needs it, the point is Caring even if you dont actually need it. The early script about consumerism works better, ted wants a tree cause nobody else has it and he alredy has everything, but learns a lesson a long the way with a darker version of once-leer
@@Dalton_Boardman2000 honestly ted getting a tree for his sister instead of his crush is 10x better, since that you know that he gave her a tree because she actually needs one, and not because he simps on some girl
I honestly don't know why Taylor Swift girl isn't the main character as her motives seem less greedy and she seems to actually care about the trees.
Edit: For people saying that she couldn't grow as a character the movie itself didn't make Ned grow as a character himself. Throughout the story he only came back to the Once-ler's house just to get into Audrey's pants. He sorta cared about the trees when Audrey decided to help him plant the single tree seed. Plus when the two get the tree seed Audrey has a more excited reaction as Ned had a more meh reaction to it.
The movie could've told us details like how Audrey knew about trees, how they looked like, and what they did since she was the only one who knew they produced oxygen.
It's because Ned had room to grow as a character... Yeah he started out misguided, but grew to care, and that's more interesting than unchanging motivations
Or maybe its cuz they wanted to shove in a love story and made her just the Inspiration for Ned to do stuff lol
true right
I might be tripping but wasn’t the boy’s name Ted?

Ways to make the film better
-use “biggering” instead of “how bad can I be”
-get rid of pop culture references
-get rid of “how do you do fellow kids” lines
-scrap Oncelers family entirely
-have Oncelers face be completely covered at all times (with things like a scarf and opaque googles)
-make Ohair a more realistic and less over exaggerated and obvious villain.
-give Ted less petty motivations for finding trees
-make the message less black and white
-embrace the darker theme the book is known for
-don’t have the brand tie ins (seriously, a Mazda tie in?)
-give Onceler a believable descent into darkness
-have the Lorax made less than wise decisions when dealing with Onceler making the environmental argument more layered and less black and white
-have a bittersweet and ambiguous ending rather than wrapping things in a neat little bow
-have Onceler try and plant more trees as a compromise, only for the pollution to make it impossible

Imagine the Lorax literally spoke for the trees. Like imagine how quickly he would have to cuss at The Onceler on behalf of the trees
Things I'd change..
-Make the Lorax actually try harder to stop the Onceler and family
-Make it darker like the original film/story was pretty damn dark. Whenever the last tree falls it should look grosser and depressing
-Make Thneedville also look polluted gross and artificial - contrast this by the beauty of nature in the Oncler flashback
-Less thirsty main protagonist, maybe he genuinely wants to save the planet because the town sucks and he finds comradery with the girl character
-Less cringey songs
-Have the Oncler more of a morally grey character rather than just being 'corrupted' by his family
-Bringin back the Lorax at the end was kinda cheap, give a glimmer of hope but don't show it.. it would've had a bigger impact
-We didn't need the O'Hare guy at all
I'd love that. The original story had better music, and a better character. Onceler had empathy and compassion for the Lorax and this movie didnt even stick to the story
-Obviously keep How Bad Can I Be because that song actually slaps (without any context and just as a song)
And have Danny Devito sing!
the protagonist was as thirsty as a man in a desert
*no songs at all.*
The alternative song that “how bad can I be” replaced was titled “biggering” and it slaps so much harder.
I think both songs should have been in the song

Which honestly the movie really should’ve had even tho in comparison to “how Bad can I be” isn’t as catchy. I personally think “biggering” suits the message of the original book soooooo much better than “how bad can I be”. The thing about this too is that in the soundtrack you can see that originally there seemed to be a lot of stuff that probably would have been a lot more interesting as well as some of them just being better (my opinion and if you have a differing opinion thats fine, How bad can I be in particular seems like it's a love it or hate it type of thing)
One of these cut songs is biggering, an early version of how bad can I be. In biggering it's made clear that the onceler (Idk if that's how ya spell it) is very aware of what he's doing and the lorax actually calls him out and tries to stop him, along with this the song is actually pretty good. Biggering and how bad can I be have a few lines that are basically the same but biggering goes the more extreme routes with these parts such as where How bad can I be says: "who cares if a few trees are dying" Biggering says: "who cares if a some things are dying" and a few other parts. AND (There is a lot to talk about here wow) Biggering's tone puts it all in a negative light and shows you THIS is how bad it can be, compared to the song called How bad can I be where it's just simply is just a looping happy melody through the whole song that also propagates the exact lies that big companies use
There's also an older version of thneedville where it seems like two main things are different. First of all in this version it seems like our main character would have set out on his quest for a tree by himself instead of wanting it so a girl he likes would like him based of of the line "because Everything I ever wanted is the stuff I don't have" and since he doesn't have a tree... well you can put the pieces together. Second off all they mention a few things in this version like how they can't see the sun but they like it that way. this kinda implies that originally there might have actually been problems that maybe by the end everyone would actually give them a reason to want to repopulate the world with trees.
From all of this I do think that had they been able to do all of this this vary well could have been at least maybe a good movie, but you can see the problems of a how a really good anti-corporate movie would make the corporation owning the studio mad.

*a boy who was only inspired by ginger who cooch actually comes to be passionate about saving the earth*
*the once-ler, consumed by regret spends the rest of his life cooped up in a shack by himself*
*once the first seed is planted, the world still isn't saved bc it's not that easy, they must continue planting for another century at the least in order to regain a safe amount of oxygen*
But no.
No lasting consequences
by 'has no impact', he meant in the real world. Cuz it don't. It did nothing.
@@xxkittyxx2599 how many movies do you think actually have? thats a dumb criticism to have when it applies to most movies
The original book had a a impact on the kids who read it this movie doesn’t have a impact on the kids that watch it
I mean, even if it was cuz his mom pressured him or if he didnt understand the damage he caused, I still understood his actions did still end up causing a lot of damage. In fact, I feel it hits the mark more that he feels bad when the animals are homeless instead of not gaf. Since I'm sure most children aren't like "I could never be so heartless to knowingly cause the destruction of cute animals home, I can't relate" having the person who did it feel bad makes it seem more relatable
I remember when I was younger I had a crush on the young once-ler 😭
The young Once-ler is pretty sexy tho--
UWU_ Anneliese:3 I still have it and I’m an adult, because let’s face it... EVERYONE HAD A CRUSH ON HIM.
Bruh I’m a little hard to Old Once-ler
well i still have a crush on him 😔
LoL
Have you seen the storyboard for “biggering.” It’s the song that was supposed to be “how bad can I be” and it was miles better. It had emotion, talented voice work and was no so incredibly cheap. It was scrapped for being too intense, I believe. I listen to that song unironically, it’s amazing and sends a message.
This reminds me of the Simpsons a horror episode where the school is eating children and marge says to Bart and Lisa go to the teachers and say - don't eat me -. This reminds me because the lorazepam speaks for the trees and the trees say don't kill me and that's all the loran does
Lorax: "I speak for the Trees!"
Treelon Musk: "I'm about to end this creatures's whole career!"
This comment legit makes no sense 😂
hayZmation How does it not?
lol Changing Elon Musk’s name doesn’t make it a joke
hayZmation ???? That’s not the joke so...?
then whats the joke b r u h, Elon musk donated to plant a million trees and that makes this funny?
Say whatever you want, but the soundtrack is an absolute banger
CqToons especially the how bad can I be one
@@oliviaquilliam7701 can't forget the opening song
Have you listened to biggering? Now that’s what I call a banger (seriously search it up)
The soundtrack goes hard in the same manner that Mario kart songs go hard. I like them ironically until they grow on me and I'm stomping around my house singing "how BA-a-A-A-aD can I be??"
Demogorgon yes exactly
Reminder that for this specific movie, Illumination signed off over 100 brand deals for any products who wants it. INCLUDING A GAS. BURNING. CAR.

Ok I was going to listen to your opinion but dissing on how bad can I be? That’s crossing the line
Being in that movie is how bad it can be.
Budum tss.
witherXD **Cricket noises**
How Bad Can I Be singlehandedly takes the movie from a 1/10 to a 4/10
BlackBlade GX Gaming its a bad song
I agree with EVERYTHING in this movie, HOWEVER......

The soundtrack is the only good thing about the movie. I love the soundtrack.

Ehe?
I actually really liked the “how bad can I be” song but the old movie was a lot better and more accurate to the book then the new movie

Me: *hears babies crying*
“Eh, it’s not THAT bad.”
Also me: *has PTSD flashbacks when hearing iPhone alarm*
I don't even have an iPhone but I still hate that sound
