You guys will never see this, but the way you talk so casually and normally about therapy means so much more than you know. Representation matters. Thank you.
I love it that some men are now openly talking about seeing a therapist. This opens doors to so many other men who are in crises and are wondering if they should try it. "When you wonder if I should go to therapy, that's when you should make an appointment" said a psychologist on the radio.
@MorbidManMusic Recent research shows that many men feel there's a stigma associated with going to therapy and needing help for their problems. According to the study, many feel that they should just deal with their problems on their own, which means men are less likely to go to therapy compared to women.
@MorbidManMusic It's still a tabu for most men to talk about it or even go to therapy because most fear it's a sign of weakness. I know men like that. And boy they do need therapy. But I'm glad to hear your opinion. Do you think it's also as easy for men to talk about their feelings as it is for women?Just interested about your opinion.
People being more comfortable with the idea of therapy is a great thing. "If you have a thought 'should I go to therapy' .....you should go to therapy" is a bit of a blanket idea though.
@Tara Oakwell That's cuz the interviewers are very nice and don't let him know when he's said something before. If he feels he has to say it, he should!
can we talk about how two adult men casually discussing their funny therapy stories is SO amazing?! like without a second thought they are actively de-stigmatizing mental healthcare in men
Thank you John and Stephen for talking openly about getting help for mental health. It encourages others to get help and lets people like me know that we are not alone in our loneliness, that we don't need to feel ashamed for needing help.
I’m just envisioning Stephen as a kid in front of his 10 siblings like “have you ever had a dream that you, um, you had, your, you, you could...” like that kid in the meme
It'll be in a large part because of having guests (celebrities) on stage each night. They wouldn't class all that as "a play" since a big chunk of each performance is them talking to a real person and just riffing.
I would like to point out that in very important ways, you can never retell the exact same story, because you, yourself are different, and the listeners are different themselves. People notice different things over time as well. I noticed this when I was trying to get some culture in on a budget, and studied some of the classic novels of the 1800s, re-reading them repeatedly, surprisingly noticing different things in different readings. Sometimes reading multiple texts by the same author reveals things like common themes/tropes, which can give insight. In particular with a therapist, they may be *extremely* interested in hearing the same story again, many months apart, because the things you emphasize may be different, and this could be significant. I know I change how I view past events over time, re-evaluating them, and straight up BSing to myself. I can't be the only one!
Thank you two, for talking so openingly, honestly, and calmly about therapy. I've been talking to my therapist over the phone these past few weeks in quarentine, and it feels so alienating. Thank you for making me feel less alone for needing them still. Also, John, as always, I relate to you so much. You are truly the voice of this generation. (Or at least the awkward, anxiety induced ones.) And I am really thriving on this, the fact that I have a perpetual excuse for not having to do something. It's so relaxing, which is awful, because people are dying and I will soon go broke.
@@janedoe6704 Yeah, that's kind of what I meant. I mean John is a former drug addict and alcoholic and Stephen lost 2 of his brothers and his Father in a plane crash straight off.
I, too, am thriving in the "not being socially obligated to go anywhere" atmosphere. In fact, I almost don't want to go anywhere even more now, because I know when this is all over I'm never going to have this opportunity again. Also, It's so good to hear you guys talk about therapy so openly. We need to do that more. :)
I love how Stephen describes telling stories. That is how I tell stories, I always call it, "taking the scenic route." I'll get to the point *eventually* 🤣
I think I've finally pinpointed what makes The Late Show at Home so wonderful-- everybody Stephen talks to seems so relaxed. They've forgotten they're on camera and that people will be watching, and instead they just chitchat and hangout. It's such a fascinating and relaxed look into so many different kinds of celebs who are all Stephens bffs. I love it. Thank you for continuing the show from home. Family PA- y'all are doing amazing.
@@myandroid6116 something tells me you struggle to fit in with groups of people. The trick is to work out what they're doing, really watch and listen, and if you want to join in, learn to play the game, rather than take their ball and run off. Hopefully that helps in your future interactions with human beings. Good luck!
good lord i mean i know everyone has said this but jc hearing not even once but boooth of these amazing people talk about therapy so casually. its amazing. and that they're men and considerably high profile is even better. i just love that so much.
Thank you Stephen Colbert and John Mulaney, for that heartfelt therapy session. I need that. Keep doing what you do so well. Entertaining all of us, and being therapeutic, fun and healthful at the same time. For keeping us grounded, and sane. Can't ask for more during this quarantine.
I know you’ve probably heard it a lot Stephen but thank you I will listen to your stories forever and that I’ve never met your mom I swear for years you have helped me breathe and laugh
My mom is a psychologist who is still meeting with patients over Zoom/FaceTime/ Skype/whatever they choose, and she couldn’t stop smiling this whole episode (and lovingly smacking me on the head because I was a little shit growing up.) There really is nothing you can say that will bore a good therapist, and they feel the monotony of quarantine just as well as you do.
I always ask how my therapist is doing in various aspects. I know her dad is still living in Puerto Rico so whenever anything happens in Puerto Rico like the hurricanes or the earthquake I always check on him and ask if he is ok; don't ask me why. Well I guess it's because she is the best therapist I've ever had and I'm genuinely worried. And now that I think about it one of my issues is overwhelming empathy, the kind that keeps me up at night so I guess it makes sense. 😂
I love this. And that's the weird thing about working in a creative field and having a therapist. When I tell my stories to my therapist I feel like I must make it as cinematic and enjoyable as possible.
"I put a lot of detain into my stories.", says the Tolkien fan/soon to be. Seriously, thank you gentlemen for being transparent about your mental healthcare. I hope this will inspire all watching to practice mental healthcare as they need it or are able.
Stephen: *is deeply afraid of telling stories that drag too long* Also Stephen: *interrupts his guest and uses remainder of airtime to tell a story about why he's afraid to tell long stories*
That’s amazing... My wife is one of eleven children as well and it’s almost impossible to be heard in that family unless you’re yelling, and even then probably about half are ignoring you.
Stephen: I was a terrible story teller. I would put in *far too many details.* I would just *draaag* everything out *forever.* My brothers' and sisters' *eyes would roll in their head* and they just- *their tongues would lull out on the couch* waiting for the story to be over. And one day I heard my mother saying *behind the kitchen door* "listen to his stories."
Stephen, you are A GREAT STORYTELLER! I always got that from the way you can make your jokes and say something without stealing the guest's spotlight. That's why you are my favourite host!
It takes a really strong therapist to handle someone wired to entertain. It's how we seek approval, validation, and also how we (try to) control the situation. I prepare for each session like it's a set. If I can keep them entertained I don't have to reveal or deal with the real shit. I have yet to find a therapist who is my equal and can keep me doing the thing I hate doing... focusing on me.
I have no idea who John Mulaney (haven't ever seen anything he's done) is but I love to see him on Colbert. He's a delightful person in these interviews!
I could hear them talk about therapy and mental health for hours.
That makes two of us... Especially realizing how much I relate to them
I know! It’s really refreshing to see how we’re not all that different at this level of human experience..!
It seems like you can, at least listen to John, on his podcast :)
Yeah me too it's quite comforting
I could listen to them talk together about anything for hours.

D B Mental health & therapy never should have been stigmatized to begin with & the stigma will never be erased if people don’t discuss it openly.
