      You do a great job with your English. I'm a midwestern American who appreciates English grammar and usage. It's easy to recognize that you are a serious student of language, especially English. Keep-up the good work with your videos. Russia, as seen through your lenses, is a most beautiful country with warm-hearted people. I'm a subscriber to your channel.

      @@smileychess It's the grammar that will kick your ass (so I hear). Makes it one of the most difficult languages to learn (after 1)Chinese and 2)Japanese, so I hear). There's agreement for everything: one female and the verb is one way, two males and another way, two males and one female another way, etc.

    Hahaha I knew it! I always said to myself that there is a southern accent when you speak. I’m an Arab from Abu Dhabi, and I remember visiting my younger brother for his graduation from Arizona State University, and after his graduation we took a road trip throughout the South. We visited Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Tennessee. I couldn’t agree more, southerners are mighty friendly. The irony was that the further north we went, the less friendly people became especially in melting pots like New York, or even wealthy states like Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire. I even remember being kicked out of a restaurant in Vermont because I’m assuming they thought we're poor college kids lol. Whereas in the south, in a beautiful small town called Ocean Springs, Mississippi. After a long conversation with two tables and the owners about politics, history, and religion the owners decided that our money was no good here. Just pure friendly southern hospitality. I’ll never forget those people. That’s why I have a soft spot for anyone from the South I run into here in Abu Dhabi or Dubai or anywhere in the world.

But my goal is to get well enough again that I can travel to Russia again. I went there in 1989 and 1993 and I want to see how it has changed since then. After seeing some of your videos and also videos by Sergey Baklykov I want to visit Yekaterinburg and other places as well if I can. Studying a second language in high school was one of the most difficult subjects that I had. In 2003 studying the Russian language was even worse because of the alphabet and because of my age. While I was studying Russian I asked a university professor why I'm having such a difficult time with Russian. He told me that it's my age. Trying to learn another language when a person is older can be difficult for many people because the part of the brain that is used to memorize more languages hasn't had a chance to grow. He said I would be better off immersing myself in the Russian language than trying to study it at home. He said when I have to use it and listen to it every day I'll slowly comprehend it. Then when I got to Russia no one wanted to hear my poor Russian and almost everyone asked me, "please speak English". I had a lot of fun helping people with their English, especially the older people who did have English as a second or third language during their school years but it slipped quite a bit because they didn't have a chance to use it until the internet came along. There is also a website where people can get together and learn languages. Years ago it was great because it was only a language site and then they added flirting and relationships and the site really went to pot for a lot of people who wanted to learn a language but we are still teaching on interpals.com. A person just had to be careful in who they are talking to now because many of the profiles are fake perverts looking for their prey. It's easy enough to block a person you don't care to speak to and many people, especially women do block people. The worse thing about this site now is they allow a person to stipulate certain age groups that they want to talk to and that doesn't help us older people who want to speak and help younger people. It's my belief that these people who stipulate certain ages are not there for language help. :-)

    • @TomM60
      @TomM60 3 роки тому

      Once a person is confident they are writing to a real person on Interpals then they branch off to Skype, Viber or Whatsapp to learn speech. Most people will not give out their Skype, Viber or Whatsapp unless they know for sure who they are writing to while others want to speak on Skype or the others right away to see a person face to face to make sure who they are.

    As my advice for language learners I can add that along with watching TV and youtube channels in foreign language you can also listen to the radio and you better switch all your devices (smartphone, laptop, watch, etc.) in the language that you are learning. This way you can create the foreign language environment around you no matter where you actually live.

    The biggest flag that someone is Russian trying to speak English is that they don't use the articles "a", "an" and "the". This is also a characteristic of the Latin language and I studied Latin in high school. Knowing how to use English articles instinctively is a huge accomplishment for Russian speakers.

I particularly like your walking around and talking with people videos. I really liked the video asking Russians what they think about Americans and the stereotypes. Anyway, keep up the great work.

    I'm an American, and I found it useful. I find it challenging to learn Spanish. Simply because there are no Spanish speakers in my area that I can interact with on a frequent basis. Thank you for the video. My grammar sucks. My wife has told me so. She was a teacher. I speak naturally, so when I write, I tend to do the same. So I may buy that book you referenced. Pigeon Forge, my wife and sister-in-law visits that area twice a year. I live in Lexington, KY.

    Immersion hearing native speakers is best. Daughter lived in castille region of Spain and became very fluent. Textbook reading is okay, but you can never learn the conversational aspect of a given language. Other daughter took Latin which unlocked most of the romance languages for her. Her English skills improved as well.

    I'm 53 and have learnt a few languages from living in different countries. Last 5 years I've been in China. My Chinese is ok, good enough to have a BF and work here. So after Chinese anything else is easy. But your level of English is truly impressive. I took the lazy way by immersion in various countries over the years. I hope to live in Georgia after I retire from China so Russian is useful though English is universal and not very welcome in former Soviet counties as well. But I love the sound of Russian as my parents were Yugoslav, Russian is more useful for more countries.

    Mystery solved! I've watched a good number of your videos and I swore you were an American from the south, as you have a slight southern accent. I heard you say often that you're Russian, but it didn't seem that it was so. Now I see and I also know what it seems you have the southern accent. I was stationed for about 3 years in Knoxville,TN (I was a Navy Medic for 20 years and I'm from the northern panhandle of West Virginia) which isn't all that far from Pidgeon Forge and now it makes sense. You programs are very good and informative. I just recently gotten to know a guy from Moscow and have watched a lot about Russia and like you, my preconceived ideas of what Russia was like (I'm a child of the 60's) have been blown out of the water.
