My daughter works on her Jeep too and has a video on this site as well. We noted you made a comment on her video (oil change) too. As my daughter said at the end of her video, "it is so easy, even a boy could do it". (LOL) This video was on a Jeep Wrangler JK. The new JL's are slightly different with oil quantity. The oil drain plug will show 13mm when you look up the size, but the 1/2" on ours fits perfectly. a 1/2" socket is actually 12.7mm. So you always want the tight fit and the 13mm socket was slightly loose. So you may find on yours the 13mm fits when the 1/2" doesn't, but I always suggest to use the socket with the best fit. If the 1/2" fits better, then use that instead.

My oil cap was stuck firmly on there. Plastic nut was rounded and cap wouldn't budge. Thank you previous owner. Had to cut it 4 ways with a hack saw, like a x across housing to remove it. That was fun. Quick and easy but it worked but rather not do that again.

I know of the issue. I don't know of any change except with the new 3.6L with the JLs. But I know of ticking issues. On my 2016 JK, had to replace the upper cam, lifter / rockers. I tell folks to ensure adequate oil fill, and keep oil changes at recommended intervals based on your owners manual. Thank you for watching.
First, everyone lives in a different area so they need to know their local codes and regulations. The local auto parts stores in our area takes our used oil. You bring your oil in to the store and fill out some address information and dispose of it in a larger recycle bin they have. So ensure you drain your oil. Also - there are recycling centers that take these items, some cities have special days you can drop off this including other items, but reach out to find out where these exist. I may have these, used oil, batteries and paint stored until these drop off days occur. I hope this helped but first call your city and get their specific information.

Good Question. It is 6 quarts. In the video I first put 5 Quarts in (which is the size of the 4.73L (5 Qt) Oil Jug described). Then we start the Jeep on video for 5 min or less to allow the oil to flow through the filter and then we check the level on the dipstick. There is oil left in the system so we check to see where it is and then add more oil (approximately 1 quart). The video shows the 5 Quart jug as the first step and then shows adding oil (approximately 1 QT) but only until the dipstick indicates it has enough. Thank you for your question. There is another video on our channel with the same oil change by our "Jeep Girl" on a 2016 Jeep Wrangler. It may give you a different perspective but the concept is still the same. Because the oil filter (canister / cartridge) is on top and not sitting in the oil under pressure, removing the filter cartridge before or after doesn't impact the oil change as with the traditional oil filter sitting lower in the engine compartment with oil being held in the reservoir. Having the oil filter on top is very convenient and allows for you to remove it at any point in the process. Having a warm engine allows for more viscosity and most of the oil will drain easier when warm. Safety is the priority so the risk of a hot engine should be a concern. If the engine has been sitting for a while, I would typically start it and run it for 3-5 minutes before starting the oil change. Remember - be aware of the hot oil and take all safety precautions.
No, it takes approx. 6 for a 3.6L. If the oil was completely drained I would say it takes approximately 6 Qts. Because I use the 5 QT jug to do the initial fill, I prefer to load the 5 Qts, then run it a few minutes to get the oil circulating through the filter and system, then start to fill again based on the oil dip stick level. If you put 6 QTs in first, it may overfill because of what is still in the system. I try to target in between the low / high points on the dip stick. I would say based on the residual oil that did not completely drain, you are not quite using 6 Qts. But just use the dipstick to monitor the fill level. If you use the dipstick to monitor at the end, you will always have the correct amount. REMEMBER - Keep the Jeep on a level surface to get an accurate reading. The main reason for this is that if you put 6 quarts to start, you could overfill it based on how much residual oil you still have in the system And if you did not drain it all the way. For the 3.6 L Jeep Wrangler JK, I used approximately another quart. The reason I say approximately, is because anytime you change the oil, there’s still some oil left in the system even if you do your best to attempt to drain everything. So that last quart needs to be checked and monitored by looking at your oil dipstick. You want to run your vehicle so the oil flows effectively through the entire system, then turn it off, wipe clean and do a final check on your oil dipstick. The new Jeep Wrangler JL‘s with the 3.6 L that has been redesigned takes less oil. The dipstick is your final check point.

I apologize for not knowing exactly but would estimate it to be approx. 8,000 miles. It is my understanding the oil light indicator on at least the later model Jeeps are not only set to mileage. I believe other driving conditions impact it as well such as temperature. Personally, I live in Texas and based on the hot summer and driving conditions here, using the full synthetic oil I change it around 6,000-8,000 miles. When I go to the display menu under vehicle options, the 2nd item is Oil Life Remaining %. I may check that and change my oil before it gets to 20%. I drive the 2016 JKU all year so the oil gets changed about 3 times a year. The 1998 TJ does not get a lot of miles on it so I change the oil every 6 months no matter the miles. Thank you for your question. I will follow up with Jeep to explore this question even further (update - read on link below starting on page 676 for the 2016 - looks like every 10,000 miles is the maximum service interval but the oil light indicator will come on based on driving conditions and can be sooner)
Changing oil is based on dip stick measurement because all oil is not entirely removed from the system. So the total capacity is 6 quarts but residual capacity depends on how much is remaining in the system that has not been drained. The 3.6 L for the Jeep Wrangler JK has a oil capacity of 6 Quarts but a variable range to refill based on your oil remaining in the system.

It is a pain to always have to remove it. I like the way it helps prevent dirt and debris from getting directly on top of the engine. I have forgotten to put it on before when working on the Jeep and I could tell it was off with just a slightly louder engine noise. Also, I removed the hood liner because it was slowly tearing so I was hoping the engine cover did some hood protection from heat. With all that being said, I purchased a new 2023 Gladiator and the first thing I noticed is there was no engine cover for the 3.6L.
Check the video between 1:14 seconds and 1:17 seconds, during the tools and sockets needed section. 1/2" for the oil drain pan and 15/16" for the oil filter housing. Let me know if you need anything else. Thank you for watching.

On the 3.6 do you ever notice the lifter tick until the oil reaches the top end and then it stops? Have they come out with something to fix that yet?

They apparently fixed the lifter issue on 2017+ Pentastars

I discarded the beauty cover, on my 2016 JKU, because it has no functional purpose. The benefit is that your engine will run cooler. Cheers, Phil
