Jeep Wrangler 3.8 L Oil and Filter Change (Bonus - Engine Flush)
This video shows how to change your oil and filter on a Jeep Wrangler JK 3.8L Engine. It also includes a BONUS Section on How to do an Oil Engine Flush. This is a simple step by step video.
The Jeep used in this video is a 2009 Jeep Wrangler X Unlimited JK.
The Oil used is Full Synthetic 5W-20 and this engine takes 6 quarts of oil.
The Filter used is a MOPAR filter M0-049.
The Engine Flush used (OPTIONAL Process) is a Pro-Line product called Liqui Moly Engine Flush. Please research this product and read all materials about how to use it. In this video we added it to the oil and ran the engine in IDLE only (do not drive) for 10 minutes. Then we followed the normal oil changing process by draining the oil. Only do this with a professional automotive service advisor recommendation.
SAFETY RISKS - To avoid chemical or material in your eyes wear Safety Glasses. Wear gloves to protect your hands and be careful working around a hot engine to avoid burns. Wheels should be chocked and emergency brake on to avoid vehicle movement. Always use an oil pan to catch the oil and recycle responsibly.
The oil pan drain plug torque is 20 ft lbs. The oil filter torque is 18-20 ft lbs or hand tight until it reaches the base and an additional 1/4" turn of the filter. Always run the engine and safely check for leaks when complete. Tighten as necessary.
Please use caution and understand the risks when working on your vehicle. Use a professional service technician to avoid risks to your vehicle. Subscribe to our Channel for more Jeep modifications and maintenance tips. #jeepwrangler #jeeplife #jeep

After replacing the sensor and going on a test drive my abs light came on again. Do I have to clear the light with a scan tool also?
A couple questions? A normal scan tool will not work unless it has the ABS reader. Normally, the light will go away but the code will remain in the system unless you delete it with the ABS scan tool. How did you know which side to replace? I only ask in case there was another issue as well. A normal OBD2 will not clear it.
Did the scan tool pick up any other issue?
I took it to a local repair shop and they told me it was the front right wheel speed sensor. I replaced it and drove a mile or two and the light came on again.
I just ordered a Innova 5610 scanner from Amazon for $241. I will sort this out once I get it. I just wanted to know if the abs light was supposed to stay off once the sensor is replaced.
Normally it has gone off for me. But I also erase it with my ABS Scanner. So I never really have the opportunity to see if it would come back on by itself. It may just be the code is still in the system. But if it is driving normal, I would say you fixed it. I enjoy my scanner with ABS as well (Autel) because it has helped me tremendously. Thank you for watching.
Thanks man 1 of my 2 keys decided to crack and split in half luckily I got 2 new keys before it stopped working completely Got 2 keys from Amazon for $20 and got a local locksmith to cut both of them $20 total so I got $40 in 2 brand new keys
That is awesome! 😎 ✌🏼 Thank you for watching!
Fantastic ! I followed this process but one word of caution, if you use the topsider, the seals will swell after use if you don't clean them. I ended up spraying them down with brake clean and that did the trick. Thank you so much for such a great process video. Much appreciated.
Great tip! Thank you for watching. I am glad the video helped.
Absolutely love this 4 part series! I have watched each one several times. Outstanding presentation. ! will be there 7-10 you have definitely given me and others a leg up on what to expect on these trails. Can't say enough good about how thorough you were. Fine work John.
I am glad you liked it. Thank you for watching. If you haven't been there, the Park store will share the latest conditions. Enjoy!
Thanks for the information and videos 👍
You bet! Thank u for watching!
I have an 09 with the 3.8l also. Ive found 5w40 to run great in mine. Im currently using shell rotella t6 5w40 heavy duty diesel oil and lubegard biotech. I used to run 5w30 but 5w40 seems to handle the heat better and not burn off.
I posted your comment but where do you live, because in the southern states I have not tried going up in weight. I like 5W-20. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnsJeepGarage Louisiana. I also ran full synthetic 10w30 when we had the great freeze of 2021 and the shorter one back in January of this year. These 3.8l were engineered for 10w30 originally. Apparently they never changed anything to make it spec 5w20 and just backspeced it for CAFE reasons.
I posted your comment. Thank you for watching.
No skid plate on the oil pan…. You’ll see this jeep at Starbucks. 😂 Just kidding. Great video to demonstrate how to change the oil.

What's the size bulb to purchase at auto store?
If you’re using regular bulbs or incandescent bulbs, then they should be 3157, but if you have LED then there are some variations. Maybe this chart can help you also if you put in your vehicle information. Then scroll down. sealight-led.com/automotive-bulb-finder/jeep/gladiator Thank you for watching
Nice idea on using the black cap on the battery terminal. Will have to remember that. I'd like to know why Jeep mounts the alternator backwards like that? Thanks
Thanks for watching. I am glad that tip was helpful. On the alternator, it is about alignment with other engine accessory pulleys for the serpentine belt. So it’s more about where it fits in the engine bay with that particular engine. As an example, look at the TJ , more access on the 4.0 L and able to have the alternator set back with belt in front. The same on a Jeep Wrangler JK 3.8 L, room in the engine bay to have the alternator back and pulley facing forward to align the accessories and belt. The new design 3.6 L versions on the same Jeep JK body, reverses the position of the alternator for easier alignment. The same with different model cars. I realize the design engineering teams create other problems too for jobs that were simple like changing spark plugs. I like the older styles easier access.
@@JohnsJeepGarage thanks!
The only video on the door pin topic. Sinple and easy to understand help. Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thank you for watching! 😎✌🏼
thanks was just looking under mine for the first time there, and that gas tank is way in the way, you made it look easy to work around it... i'll be working on this next weekend....
Since it is not lifted, I want you to try something, if you try this, you will see as just a test the difference in your access. Put a floor jack under the rear bumper and start jacking it up. You will realize that you are not jacking up the frame or the vehicle, but you are raising the rear end which itself will give you more of a clearance with the gas tank. Thank you for watching.
@@JohnsJeepGarage thanks, I was looking at that very thing...and then put the jack stands under the bumper. It looks like I'll get an inch or so better room in there. thanks for that tip
Awesome - glad it helped. Thank you for watching.
Do you have any before and after measurements? Interested to hear a long term review on this lift
It is not a lift kit, it is a leveling kit for the front which removes the rake a true 1.5”. So the front levels out 1.5”higher. Thanks for watching.
My screws won't turn & I don't want to break anything.
Sounds like somebody over torqued it, I would try a little WD-40 or PB blaster. The screws remain in a new housing in the housing doesn’t cost that much. I would say that your issue could be stripping the head of the screw so make sure you have a good fit and standard pressure while unscrewing.

Hey John! Thanks so much for your videos. You've walked me through several things at this point. Don't suppose you could do one for the Hvac door actuator that is behind/under the steering column could you? 😊
Great suggestion! I appreciate hearing what people are interested in so I can capture that in the future. Thank you for watching our channel.
Awesome video !! Thanks for putting it together and giving me the confidence to tackle this job on my Jeep JK !!

I have a 22 Gladiator Sport. 1.5 leveling kit and 34s can I make it safety up Fun Run?
Try Snake first which is another Jeep Badge of Honor trail and see what you think. We have another video on our channel for Snake. Then, on Fun Run, look on the video at the 7:59 - 9:25 time mark. That will be your biggest challenge but I believe you should be able to do it. It is a 3 Diamond - but the best thing is to talk to the Park Store and see if conditions changed, weather has made it more challenging. Always best to travel with other Jeeps which you can find there in groups or with a friend. Thank you for watching. (Air down your tires.)
@@JohnsJeepGarage Thanks, appreciate the help.
Thank you again for watching our channel.
Helpful
Thank you for watching. I have a couple TJ videos with the same topic, but this one has the coil rail and the other ones are dealing with a distributor. There’s another one with the actual coil for the distributor as well. I’m glad it helped.
nice and easy thanks
Thank you for watching, I hope this video helped you. Some people choose to take off the tire which can allow for easier access.
looks simple enough ! Thanks J !
I appreciate you watching our video. I hope it helped. Let us know if we can ever provide you additional information.
Will the process be fairly close to the same on a 2020 Gladiator? Thanks for the video!
I have not replaced any on the newer Gladiators, but in general - yes. I probably need to do a walk through for that project but the concept is the same. Thank you for watching.

Does the auto transmission not have a drain plug like the manual? 7-9 Ftlb for those screws is 84 inlb. Seems high.
No drain plug for the auto. Unless you buy aftermarket. Yes, the torque is correct. Thank you for watching.
Thanks for sharing ... I have a headlight that stopped working and have to see what I can do about it.
Unfortunately, some may burn out over time as you know unless it is a newer light. Some decent ones on Amazon. Thanks for watching.
@@JohnsJeepGarage After watching your video yesterday I pulled the grill off, easy as you described. I have Quadratec LED, older version headlights. The passenger side light didn't come on the other day, but yesterday did. I checked the connections and they seemed fine and the light is still working??? I"m guessing the ballast or what ever it's called might be going to fail. Again thanks for your channel ... it really helps those of us not too mechanically inclined.
Glad it helped. It may be just the connections as well. But I am glad it started working and you know how to access it any time you need it. Thank you again for watching.
Thanks for showing this the Jeep dealership said that this couldn't be done. My new bumper winch plate is interfering with the sway bar disconnect motor harness plug. Figured if I flipped it that could put the plug in an accessible area.
Glad it helped. I have been on many off road trails (Jeep Badge of Honor Trails - see videos on this channel) and had it flipped prior to any of those trails. Never had an issue with it and works great. Thank you for watching.

How do you replace the Hood rod support? Mine is somehow missing when I bought my jeep, so I want to put the one I ordered on.
ua-cam.com/video/4dVN73C9LJA/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared Hope this helps. Thank you.
Used this video over the weekend to replace the rear pads on my 2017 Sahara. My first time doing this job on any vehicle I've owned. Thank you. The only hiccups I had were: 1) Getting the pins to pop back out after popping them back in. I had to pull em out and put em back a few times. Maybe I used too much grease? Pushing with minimal force also seemed to help. And yes, I'm aware of the sexual innuendo here. 2) I wasn't really sure how liberally to use the brake cleaner spray on the calipers. I know that stuff is crazy toxic and can eat up rubber parts over time. Is there a safer product to use to clean the caliper? And if so, how should it be applied/used to best clean it. My calipers were in good shape (only 60K miles) but nowhere near as clean as yours looked when I replaced them.
Thank you for watching. Purasolve is a brake cleaner I have not tried but is on the market. There is also the Brakleen (green bottle) - non chlorinated. I try to always wear gloves as I am sure you do as well. I know this video was on the front brakes and will be doing a new video on the rear within a week.
Loved the longer version oil change video. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve done all the badge trail’s several times when we visit the park but for some reason Snake has always been my favorite. Thanks for sharing with us.
That is awesome! I truly like Snake and we have all 4 Badge trails on our channel. We did all four last October but my video files for Snake got corrupted, so we went back recently and I wanted to ensure I published it so I could have all four posted on UA-cam. I tried to do more with the camera angles this time then on the other three, but I think if there’s a way to use a drone, it would give a different perspective as well. I’m looking at sponsoring a trail on the west side. It’s a short climb up the side of one of the Hills that is rated a 3 diamond currently and is called J 26. One day you may find our channel sponsoring that trail. Thank you for sharing.

How do you like the 5.13’s? I plan on upgrading from 4.10’s soon but can’t decide between 4.88 or 5.13.
Thank you for watching. Do you have a Gladiator? What size tires are you running on them? If you go to 37's or 38's on the Gladiator I definitely recommend 5:13's over 4:88's. I am running 4:88's with 37's on a Jeep Wrangler JK. But for the Gladiator, I recommend and also you should find many who suggest the 5:13's over the 4:88's on a Gladiator. On a Gladiator - For 35's go 4:88's. 37's - 38's I would go 5:13's. 40" - Go 5:38's. Again this is my opinion. If you look up a site called Exodus4x4.com for Jeep Gear Ratio Charts, they also break it out by engine size and transmission type.
I have a 2015 Jeep Wrangler with this same issue. I've replaced the fuse several times, but it keeps burning out every time me I turn the outlet button on. Any idea of what problem could be... Thanks in Advance!
Sorry to hear that. Thank you for watching. This video as you know is specifically for the fuse for the cigarette lighter outlet, but if I understand, it seems that the inverter outlet that you can plug an extension cord into keeps blowing the fuse when you toggle the button. There is a short somewhere based on your description. If it immediately burns out once you toggle it on, I would trace the wires from the inverter as well as the switch to see if any wire is exposed or not connected correctly. I could tell you to buy a new inverter module outlet, which may be the right solution, but I would hate for you to do that when it may be something in the wires. At the same time, the module may be the issue as well.
@@JohnsJeepGarage yeah, it's the inverter outlet but when it blows that fuse the lighter outlets stop working as well. But i'll see if I can trace the wires and see what is going on. Thank you!
yeah its actually the Inverter outlet that keeps blowing the fuse and the cigarette outlets stop working as well. I'm gonna see if I can trace the wires and see if that's the problem. Thank you!
I hope it is an easy fix. Please share and I will ensure it is posted. Thank you again for watching our channel.
Since it blows both sections, my guess is something is loose. Thanks again for sharing.
Is there a coolant temp sensor by the oil filter
If you remove the upper manifold and lower manifold and are looking at your oil cooler, you will have the oil temperature sensor, and the oil pressure sensor at the end of the oil cooler which as an entire component is attached to the oil filter housing. Other than that, I am not certain which sensor you may be talking about. The coolant temperature sensor is behind the driver side engine block as described in my video. Thank you for watching and please reach out if you have any further questions.
Thanks for clear video! This engine was designed and engineered by a demented circus monkey

I bought a new pan with a drain plug and just on the old pan since I was going to throw it away drilled a hole in it to let it drain out fluid carefully not to drill to deep.
Sounds great, thank you for sharing. Makes draining it easier so there is less of a mess when you remove the pan, change the gasket & filter and clean the magnet for inspection. I am not sure why they designed it this way without the drain plug, unless it is to ensure people don't just drain the transmission fluid, but also remove the pan to do all the above mentioned. Thank you for watching.
