Those lawyers certainly weren't very prepared. I'm beginning to think the crazy guy wasn't the only one with competency issues.
No argument there. And Washington state laws are, to my understanding, heavily weighted in favor of never locking someone up, no matter how (very) obvious it might be that he’s in need of it.
Yeah, this is kinda scary. The prosecutor has no idea what's going on _in his own case._ And, from the looks of it, he hadn't even read the Witness Statement before court. Wow.

I think this is more of a showing of how fragile our legal system really is. How overburdened our Public Defenders office, and District Attorneys offices.

And….this wait time is why the state hospital is getting sued for 8million. They do not have enough people to get these people evaluated and we only have one hospital for mental issues.
It appeared that the defendant was correct all along. The two lawyers did look a little stupid - most unprepared, at the very least.

People on meds act like this too, meds don't fix anything. Meds suppress symptoms by messing with your brain signals. That pushes the problem down the road and the defendant is what you end up with after being treated with "meds"
I understand what you're saying and for the public good that man needs to be removed from polite society. As far as being afraid of him, I've dealt with and have seen much worse.

The last story- what happens to people like this guy? He should be in a mental facility in addition to having a repercussion for his crime. It sounds like he needs to be on medication but you can't force it once he is out. Is this just a repeating cycle?

Did the public defender actually argue that medication can help a guy who clearly refuses to take his medication? And that six months of treatment wasn't enough to get him under control, so dismiss the charges?
I know his job is to advocate for the defendant, but does he have to insult everyone's intelligence?
The prosecutor did NOT advocate for the safety and wellbeing of victim and the public! Horrible job.

I'm sorry if he has been "restored" before that means he keeps choosing not to take his meds or his mental illness is so severe that medication isn't working. If that is the case it is clear he has continued to be a danger to the community. Lock him up in an institution indefinitely before he ends up following through on his threats.

In florida, we have the baker act, where the subject is taken to a psychiatric facility and evaluated by three MD psychiatrists. Any judge can order this based on a determination that the person could be a danger to himself or others. Criminal violations have nothing to do with it. This guy looks bipolar to me.

Determine if the person presents a harm to self/others/property, or is gravely disabled and is at imminent risk, or if there is a nonemergent risk due to a substance use disorder or mental disorder, or is in need of assisted outpatient behavioral health treatment.
If Judge Simpson can be brought up before the review board then surely Stillwell can appear before an idiot board.
As sometimes happens, I was multi-tasking and listening to the show. When I looked up at the screen, I thought that the person in the lower square labeled "Karen Mcelroy" was a wax dummy. While I found that 95% unlikely, there was little to no movement of that person for periods of time and, together with the person's pallor and lack of expression, it reminded me of when facial reconstructions are sculpted in an attempt to identify an unknown body. With the other nonsense seen in Zoom court, nearly anything is possible.
Not having the victims address also means they don't know how to set any tether (if he got one).
Purpose of Zoom is no contact, no mask, right?
What is going on with the person in the top right? Is that another defendant just wandering in and chilling?
Stillwell could be in an office but you can't see anyone.
I wouldn't want either lawyers handling my case if I was on either sides. C'mon, man do you homework before coming into court. What do they do all weakened? laze about? I have seen too many lawyers pleading for "more time" on simple procedural matters. If you cannot meet the standards our Founding Fathers gave you (lawyers), don't practice law.

Hold on, the state did not call a witness, so how can the judge rely on what the prosecutor says?
It’s not a trial, it’s pre trial, they only need probable cause at this stage. Frankly, his behaviour in court is only helping the prosecution. But the prosecution is wildly unprepared- he didn’t even know the current relationship between the victim and the accused.
