- HOW TO MOUNT AN OUTBOARD MOTOR CORRECTLY - Step By Step Dos and Don'ts!!
We have been rebuilding my buddys Key West Bay Reef. We got the boat for a good price and my friend and I bought a couple of brand new Mercury 150 four strokes from an auction. Was a steal of a deal, so we bought them. I put mine on my Shoalwater and he wanted me to find him a boat to hang this motor on. With the crazy high prices of boats since the pandemic, it took me almost a year to find a good deal. Anyway this motor has been in his garage the whole time. I fixed the transom that the previous owner caused by over tightening the motor bolts and also put a transom save and a plate on there for added piece of mind. Anyway, check out the vid and let me know what you think in the comments!
Thanks for watching as always! Getting a lot of support lately and it is awesome!

Hey everyone! Really appreciate all of the comments and new subscribers I have been getting! Channel is growing pretty quick, and I am super stoked! Got some really cool things in the works and should be an interesting end to the 2021! We are so close to the 200 likes on the cast net how to video ! I will make a video for Saturday Letting everyone know how to enter the drawing! Thanks again and Tight Lines!!
I use to work with stainless nuts and bolts and they will gall/seize up when impacted. You're absolutely right.... only way to prevent this is to first brush on a little stainless never seize on the bolt threads. It will prevent seizing every single time. Good video by the way.
The marine company that mounted our motor messed up on it and that's why I'm here.
Disheartening to see your brand new boat taking on water. I was relieved to discover that it was just leaking through the Transom bolts though.
Dang crazy. Hope all worked out
Thanks for the informative video. Instead of paying someone to mount the outboard on my new RIB, I will do it myself.
Awesome! Thanks for watching
Straightforward and to the point. Terrific instructional video! Ty
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Show me how to mount an outboard 😅 without mounting the outboard 😂🎉😅😂 having the line on the motor level with the bottom of the boat was, a gem. Thanks for the facts.
Awesome! 👏 thanks for watching!
This was good taught me quite a bit. Thank you.
Glad to hear! Thanks for watching
I do ALOT of electrical work and if you use anything but wrenches on Stainless bolts and nut there is. 90% chance of galling!!! You even think fast 💨 it will fall you can use the rattle gun and have a few of them work but then it will fall on the next bolts you do. We put stainless strut straps up and we do rattle gun them but once you start you had better finish fast once that heat passes and get a temp change you have just welded them together. If it won’t move skinny wheel is the only thing that fixes it!!!
Yep you are right. A little grease or never seize and it won’t lock up as well
looks good!12 inch back 1 inch up industry standard
Yes sir! Thanks for watching !
Thank you for the video.. I learned alot from you
Thanks for watching
Always been a Merc guy; another great informative video.
Thx man!!
Very educational Bill, not that l'll be buying an outboard any time soon, knowing the process is important, Woo Hoo !! man the hat's arrived, l was going to keep one for myself, l weakened l have 2 daughters so they both have one and they're pretty excited, thanks heaps brother and tight lines. 🎣🐟
Awesome! I was worried about customs with the pandemic. I will be opening website 1st week in November and selling the hats for really cheap! $15 plus shipping. Plus I am sure to be doing more giveaways in the future! Really appreciate all your support and comments!
Will be getting a hat for myself and also jetty rocks, Mike is pretty cool, you guys rock.🎣🐟
Nice video. You made hanging an outboard seem easy AF.
Thanks man! Yeah it’s pretty easy actually.
Looking good! About time for that thing to hit the water
Bigtime! Got way too much time into this bird!
Muy buen video, no entendi muy bien porque el traductor no es muy bueno. A los peronoa de acero inoxidable hay que engrasar para que no se engranen?
No habla espanol
Congratulations and thankyou by this video. Show me about screewing into inside the boat. What tools and kind hadware and How do you make please.
Simple hand tools is all that is needed
@Jacked Up Fishing Thank you my friend. I asked you because in my case, the place where the bolt are is very hard to access so I figured there was some trick. Thank you anyway.
First..love the thumbnail..Great video bro as always.
Appreciate it!
I WANTED TO SEE HOW YOU GOT IT OFF THE "OUTBOARD PALLET"......LOL...I HAVE AN OUTBOARD ON A PALLET..WAS WONDERING ABOUT ANY TIP'S OR ANYTHING TO WATCH OUT FOR..
Make sure you have lift eyes on motor or buy the ones that you need. Pretty straight forward. Good luck
Have always used 4200. With 5200 removal is almost never. If you can get it loose you will most likly distroy the transom.
For sure if you don’t know how to do it correctly. We usually pick up and put pressure with a tractor or cherry picker then start cutting the 5200 with new razor knives. Once started it pops off.
Awesome video. Can you tell me where to get a transom saver plate? Thanks
I actually had it made at a local metal shop. Just had it made out of 1/4 inch aluminum and had them bend it on a metal brake. It ended up costing like 180 dollars. Thanks for watching!
I added an aluminum plate on the inside of my transom when I restored my skiff to prevent that issue.
Yeah I had to repair glass then do that. But it’s solid now!!
Do I need the sealant if mounting on a pontoon boat with the open area behind the motor? Idk if that makes sense lol
No you don’t
That biden harris sign in the buddies garage stood out to me like a sore thumb hahaha.
Yeah I went back and looked and was like what the @$#!!. LOL I didn't even see it editing! It would have been blurred out for sure!
@@JackedUpFishing its all good. We all know you're ridin with biden.
LOL! Thats messed up man!
After that Biden/Harris I was done 😒
Maybe he was using the Biden Harris sign for target practice. My buddy does that
What do you hook the cherry picker up to on the motor to hang it?
Some outboards have hooks and some have hooks y that bolt to the engine flywheel and you have to buy them
Trying to decide how i wanna do it, but im consodering getting an older 17to19 ft centerconsole then put a newer 4 stroke outboard on her.. thoughts?
Yeah we do that all the time. Gokd way to get a reliable rig without breaking the bank!
@@JackedUpFishing thanks!!!
Probably should have used 4200 you will probably tear the transom apart getting them bolts out with 5200. Otherwise great video
I actually like 5200 on the bolts for the engine honestly. Just don’t get all crazy with it and it will be fine.
Where did u get transom piece instead of washers ??
I had it made at a local metal shop
Nice motor, heck yeah and great video! I know what you mean about that 5200 lol its a pita nd takes 48 hours to harden, still mushy after 24 hours. Do you know when the shrimp run in my area south, Brevard, I think January?
Yeah they ran at the end of January this year, but that was really unusual. Hope they do it again! Ill come down your way and we can hit them up together!
@@JackedUpFishing You have the real boat lol more room than my jon boat and you have shrimp hitting, I'll head your way hahaha so when would they be running through here do you guess?
Think end of January will be your run
Question: What auction did you find the engine? Thanks!
It was a local auction that was posted on Facebook
did you level the boat too?
Level the boat?
What is lift capacity of the hoist you used,,im going to remove a 115 and replace it with a 150 and hopefully a harbor freight lift i have will work,,only issue is i dont have concrete to work on,,'
The harbor freight one works great. Outboards do not weight that much and using the lifts are 1500-2000lb capacity. Good luck and let me know how it goes! I am hanging mine this weekend too!!! We gotta stop working on these boats and go use them right!
@@JackedUpFishing Due to crazy low temps for sc no work outside this weekend,,i am going to soon put a 175 on my boat,,,it rates a 150 but its a deep v starcraft with a very solid transom ,,the weight difference between 150 and 175 or even 200 isnt much at all,,not worried about insurance not paying if i crash it,,i just want tog o faster than 46 mph,,i have always had a bass rig that ran 65-75,,,i bought the starcraft for the comfort and fishability vs the hard ride of a bass boat...many say dont overpower but im 66 and have been driving boats since i was very young,,i will be fine and my boat should run at least 55
@@charliesmith9528 yeah I am the same! I seen a guy do the same with a hurricane deck boat. It was sick- it had a 250 yam with Jack plate , twin power poles, and spot lock trolling motor. Totally seeing myself doing that when I get a little older. Lol
I bought the Harbor Freight 1-ton crane for $250. It lifted my 12’ OptiMax 200Hp at about 500 pounds with crane’s arm fully extended. (You lose lift capacity the further out the arm is extended. Also, by jack fluid to fill the crane’s tank, then bleed it before using.) My Opti is lifted w/an eye bolt ($20) that screws into top, center, of flywheel. Crane was easy to move as it had decent casters.
Could I b too low if I pourpise with any trim up
Yes absolutely. Drop down a hole or 2
@@JackedUpFishing down or up some
after all that searching, great job
WHY ARE YOU SELLING IT????
Not selling it’s my buddies boat- he still uses the heck out of it! Happy holidays!
How to install
lol ok 👍
I keep seeing these videos and no one likes putting on gloves… come on man, it’s not that hard. Get yourself a pack and gloves and save yourself the mess your making lol
To each his own. As long as the work is right don’t matter to me I can wipe it all down bro.
Good stuff to know as a DYI type!
Hoping you stole that Biden Harris sign in your garage from a neighbor 😜🧐😜
Yeah right!!! No Biden sign anywhere around my house!!
OHHHHHHH! Thats my buddy's girlfriends house! Wow! Good eye! Definitely not at my pad! Funny stuff!
@@JackedUpFishing lol!! I wasn't gonna push you on it and be like no I saw it. We fish the same waters and your a large fella💪
@@paulhovsepian2030 😂😂
I hate the term "cherry picker" for your lift (much more decent term). Cherry pickers (young men putting sex notches on their belt from violating virgins under the guise of "love") are the scum of the earth. Please refer to your lift in a term that doesn't invoke horrible memories in some of the women who may be watching your video.
Wow never heard that before. Thanks for watching and I will google that and see. Learn something new everyday
Your comment makes you sound absolutely insane. It's called a cherry picker because of the resemblance to a device invented to pick cherries in an orchard instead of using ladders
