  • In this second video, I raise the motor another 3/4" moving down to the forth mounting hole. I show more of the installation/mounting process using simple tools at home. We view the cavitation plate on the water at speed, do sharp turn handling and see any performance gains.

    Interesting but it would have been a lot better if you had a chart with heights and changes at the end you could compare apples to apples with. I raced offshore for many years and it was pretty much trial and error. Higher the better within reason. We ran low water pickups and cranked them up until the blew out and then down a bolt hole. The difference was totally amazing in speed, RPM and handling. Higher the better.... I was manager and director of Rabco Marine for years. We did really well until the cats came on the scene. We'd still beat them if it got rough enough. By the way....lower unit drag kills speed at some point. 3 EFI's could be faster than 4 on certain hulls. 4 will get a 35 out of the hole so hard everyone would fall down...but 3 was 6 - 8 mph faster on the top. We tried them all...believe me

      Thank you for the comment. I was just raising the motor to get the best all around performance for changing conditions on a recreational fishing boat. The changes made has shown that it is beneficial for the vessel even in a non race setup. Most installers will just put the motor on and set low for ease and liability concerns for the average boater. Wanted to show with a little work and some basic tools it's not hard to make the adjustments and see gains, too many people opt to change props first.

    I really have liked all your videos. This was a great follow up to part 1. The only thing I see is my dad always yelled at me if I used an extension on my torque wrench. Maybe do a video if they effect the torque limit or not when used. Then I can rub it in his old face if you prove it's a myth, lol.

      Yes I've heard the same thing. There is also play/give in the fiberglass and transom so precise torque would not be achieved. Also sometimes thats the only way you can reach the bolt. If it was a torque to yield bolt on an engine I would be more concerned. just my opinion.

    I have this Motor on a 2101 striper CC now. If you would like me to make another video showing the results let me know in the comments! The performance portion of this video shows a decrease in RPM and MPH from the first video. This could be accounted to extra fuel load. I filled the tank up before this trip and carrying 35 gal more. let me know what you think, should I raise the motor to the fifth and final hole?

    Interesting thx. To me the ventilation plate , still seems low. Also do not understand why the rpms and speed didn't increase , even only a bit. Did you have the same load on board or more fuel, as the top speed and rpms went down with raising the engine from the 3rd to 4th hole, never seen that before (loosing 100 rpms and 3 mph)? In my experience the props rpms increase in steps until it blows out. Did you trim up a lot as the boat seems to bounce. I'm still sticking to 1 or 2 more holes up, but see you got 1 left. On a fast cruise the plate needs to ride above the water. Think you can still get something out of it but it looks way better. The more you raise that engine the less it will bounce (till a certain point) and trim will be more effective and available. Subscribed so will see if you try something else.       I do agree It could go up more, I think a jack plate would be the next step for ease/ability to fine tune and go up further. as far as the load your comment made me realize since this was filmed on a fishing trip a had filled the gas tank, So i'm carrying 25 gal more this trip (That would explain not seeing an increase in Rpm and MPH). Also I'm waiting on the vessel view to arrive so I can get a more accurate RPM reading and keep an eye on water PSI. Trim angle has increased as the ventilation plate has come up. I do tend to run a bit of a higher trim angle so that could account for the bit of porpoising. thank you for the subscribe I will update the video as I make changes to the height. I do have more videos planed so be on the look out for them.

    1:26 shows the outboard sits further out from the transom than the typical design allowing such a high lift.

      The belief that a motor must sit hard down on the transom is erroneous. Motor height is crucial. The argument dies when you install a jack plate because then nothing sits hard down on the transom. I have/had this on 2 of my boats and have/had no problems and much better performance and fuel economy.

    Will having the engine too high or low cause the boat to shake ?? Having this problem. Thanks

      Is the "shake" a side to side in the rear feel of the vessel or an actual vibration? If it's side to side feel raising the motor helped with my "chine" walk. Raising the motor you need to watch out for loss of water pressure, ventilation of the prop and loosing grip during sharp turns or "blowing the prop out". If a vibration, It could be a prop hub issue. You would notice this during low RPM shifts into gear and smooths out above 1000 RPMs usually. hope this helps

      I have the motor on a new vessel now. If I straight line it off the V, It runs about the second water pick up hole down from the top. I have the motor still mounted in the third hole. I could still raise it to the fourth hole but I feel that would be chasing small gains. and right now not worth the effort. Thanks for the sub!

    Hi, I have a 2018 190 TX with a Mercury 115hp EFI 2,1L. I am running with a 13" x 19 Pitch prop. In the beginning with WOT I can reach 5500 rpm 42 mph. loaded with fishing gear and ice boxes. I don't know what happens, now after 1/2 hour on the water, the speed drop from 4mph, to 30 mph then 20 mph. I service the engine every year. Change engine, gear oil and water pump impeller. Also scanned the engine but everything is OK. Seems that speed drop when the engine is hot. Please can anyone help? Also what correct size prop should I use?

      I don't think you issue is with the prop sizing. If nothing has changed on the boat, but you have been seeing a decrease in speed at hotter engine temps, I would first do a compression/ leak down test. look at the fuel pressure, make sure the prop hub is not spinning. seems to me with the little info you have given, I would assume its more a loss of power. could be as the cylinders heat up and expand you are probably getting blow by. try that before thinking its the prop. good luck

      I didn't buy one. I made the upper and lower plate out of 1/2" 6061 aluminum. Was easy and cheaper to go to my local metal supplier.

      Bottom of V to vent plate 5"

      @@saltwateroffshore9802Looking at other Mercury videos. It would appear you could go to 2.5 to 3.0 inches. Have you tried raising it anymore? I installed a manual jack plate and am trying to make adjustments without changing the prop. But my rpms are maxed out without trimming the motor. More trial and error i guess.

      No I have not raised it any further. I'am happy where it is at. I need it to handle changing conditions, not looking for top performance. my next step would be to add a jack plate just for ease of adjustment. you can go a high as you need to as long as you don't loose water pressure and blow your prop out. but the boat will start to become more unstable and force you to trim down during cornering. High RPM sounds like you need to upsize your prop.

      Aluminum has many grades of alloy. The plate was made of 6061. as for your last comment of use Flat washers. Are you referring to the installed motor bolts?. I uses new Mercury factory bolts nuts and washers. I have seen motors come off transoms because of mismatched hardware. you could watch @AlfredMontaner channel and see a 300hp Verado come off at WOT.
