  • This is part one of a two part series showing in full detail how to install Mercury's 40 ELPT 4S CT, also known as the Mercury 40 hp Four Stroke Command Thrust. We cover hanging the engine, installing the control box, ignition, Vessel View, and more. This engine will install the same as the 50 hp and 60 hp Mercury four strokes too (standard and command thrust models)...and these motors are extremely common over the last decade so there's a good chance of needing help installing a used model of these motors you may have purchased.

    A lot of talent for one guy to possess, sure do appreciate you sharing it ! I feel like building a pontoon myself now , BUT my unrelenting policy of a relaxing retirement, plus a lack of necessity (thanks to you) prohibit such a venture. We do love the boat you built for us ! And a big thank you for bringing up and installing the last two pieces of furniture and the tag 😀< yea Tom !

    Wow! Awesome video! Has all the info for installing easy, but I wish you would have listed all the parts you used because I need everything you installed for 60 hp I need to mount. When I go online to get them order it's hard to sift all the crap to get right parts the first time....

      I will make sure to list those components in the future. I’m fortunate enough to be able to walk into a Mercury engine/parts dealer and tell them what I need for each boat and they have a great inventory. They sell online and over the phone too, call Vans Sport Center (616) 364-0666 and ask for Brad in Parts. Just tell him the motor you have (year and hp) and what you need…shift throttle, ignition, wire harness, vessel view, length of shift/throttle cables, safety lanyard kill switch…and he’ll get you hooked up!

    Ive got a 2015 60hp Mercury. Is this all the wiring I would need to get on the water? If so can you give me the part #s for all 3? I have vessel view and don’t wanna run gauges right now. Also I need new throttle cables if you can send the part # for those as well it’ll would be appreciated. Love your videos. Thanks

      You only need the shift/throttle controls, shift/throttle cables, and an ignition harness with a key switch. It's a good idea to add a safety lanyard (and required in some states). I'll do my best with part numbers from a quick google search, but double check everything, or purchase from a local Mercury dealer who can verify. I get all my parts from a dealer in town which saves me headache from buying the wrong stuff.
      Mercury 896537K20 Key Switch Harness 14 Pin 20 Ft
      Mercury Binnacle Mount Outboard Control Box Assembly OEM # 883711A12, 8M0041431, 8M0059686
      Mercury 19674A08 SAFETY SWITCH & LANYARD 19674A08
      For Shift Throttle Cables you'll need "Mercury Gen2" Cables for the length needed for your boat. The shift and throttle cables are the same in appearance and function, you just designate one for shift and one for throttle.
      Hope this helps. If all else fails, give Brad a call at Van's Sport Center and he can sell/ship you everything you need. Just have your motor serial number handy for him to verify: 616-364-0666

    do you have part numbers. ty

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  9 місяців тому

      I don't have numbers for everything only because the harness lengths may be different boat to boat which will change the part numbers. Likewise the shift/throttle cables would be different too from boat to boat. I strongly advise giving Van's Sport Center a call if you need to order any replacement or new install parts for your motor. They're local near me and are a Mercury dealer, and they'll ship anywhere. www.vanssports.com Ask for Brad in parts, and be sure to tell him Tom's Toons sent you!

    Would be cool if you added parts numbers to info box. I have a 40BF and need Merc Gen 2 cables but not sure which ones. Part number would have told me which ones I need. I'll figure it out. 😕

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Рік тому

      I try to whenever possible, but in terms of cables they're all a slightly different part number because of the length, plus there are options from Mercury as well as Teleflex and others. I'd hate to show the part number I used and it be 1' to 2' (let alone 6') different than what someone else needs for their boat.
      Try searching this Mercury part number, changing the last two digits to the length you need:
      Mercury Part #: 883720AXX (so for 15' long cable search Mercury Part #: 883720A15). NOTE: The part number may supersede to a different number so verify the product specs/description before purchasing.
      And here's a link for Gen 2 style cables by Teleflex where you can select the correct length for your boat:

    Hey Tom,
    Love your videos, they're helping me so much during my pontoon build! I have another question for you that kind of pertains to this video. I have a 2008 mercury 40 and I want to change the fuel lines. When I bought it, it had a 3/8" hose from the take to the water/fuel separator then 5/16" to the engine, then it looks like it butted up to a 1/4" at the engine. Is this normal or how should I run my new lines? Thanks again Tom!

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching!!
      That motor should have 5/16” at the motor, not 1/4”, from my experience. Can’t hurt to run 3/8” as it allows more fuel flow. 5/16” the whole way would be just fine too!

    Hey Tom, I was trying to find a video you had where you hooked up a diagnostic tool to check for hours, any suggestions on a specific diagnostic tool for that? When looking for a motor everybody always says low hours, but who knows, also I heard a person say too little hours over many years might not be a good thing, all kinds of opinions! Thanks

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  2 місяці тому

      Mercury is the only brand that allows the owner to hook up to the motor to check hours, it's called Vessel View Mobile and it's a system that hooks to the motor then blue tooths to your phone. It's only available on EFI motors 25 hp and up and I believe around 2006 and newer. It's not a diagnostic tool other than checking hours. It does give real-time data for temperature, fuel flow, etc. though.
      300 hours is low for the newer EFI four strokes. 500 is well used, but still solid, and anything over 800 is likely getting a little tired. However, I've seen plenty of four strokes well over 1,000 hours with only the standard maintenance done.

      The lengths of the ignition harnesses vary, but this link should get you on the right track. For this motor you need a 14-pin harness with key switch.

      @@ajj2632The ignition harness will have a lead and plug for the lanyard, neutral safety, ignition, and trim/tilt, plus a plug for your gauges to run to. There’s a separate harness for the gauges that plugs into the ignition harness. Makes it really smooth to rig gauges and then just plug in.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Рік тому

      You’ll tend to lose speed, potentially have cavitation, and almost always get excessive spray…even to where it sprays back at and even into the rear of the boat. I typically recommend raising the motor one mounting hole at a time until the spray reduces. If you go too high you’ll have cavitation and/or over-revving to where you can’t operate at higher speeds. If that happens then simply go back down until the happy medium is found.
