@@WindDemon3895 Exactly. Viggo began that phone call thinking "Aurelio better have a VERY good explanation for this!" Viggo knows that Aurelio is a smart man, and he would never put his hands on Iosef without having a good reason.
The way Viggo said "Oh" matches the letter O, rather than saying like "Oh?" or "Ohhhh". This alone shows not only Viggo forgives Aurelio for punching his son in the face, but also in his head, he know his son had poked a bear that he suppose not to poke and both of them are doomed. Very powerful scene.
Aurelio is a friend of John's, and even HE was afraid when John walked in after it all went down. He KNEW it was all over, and that old connections didn't matter anymore. Anyone was in the crosshairs if they got in the way. Beautifully filmed
I don't know. I more read it that he was going to have to give his friend the bad news of who killed his dog (knowing that it was going to be bad for everyone, and uphill for John).
That's the symbolism of the drink Aurelio offers John. Note that John doesn't immediately accept the drink: he was waiting to see if Aurelio had any role in what occurred. Aurelio told John everything without lies or hesitation. John was satisfied that Aurelio had no part, accepted the drink, and asked for a car. Until that point John would have killed Aurelio. Taking the drink showed that they were ok.
Great script writing! No monologing or dramatic music... Just one word, "oh" which makes the whole audience understand how much respect and fear Mr Wick carries!
The thing i like the most is aurelio's position. - Works for Viggo - John trust him with a drink and sits with him despite being on revenge mode - Probably gave Theon a little more time before dying by making him leave - Punches Theon knowing full well that, John Wick or not, Viggo could still make him pay. - Cooperates with John as soon as he comes in - Has an unspoken understanding with Viggo that punching his son didn't even matter, and asking for apologies would be a waste of time at this point. I don't like action movies in general but the mythos they build around John and how the characters interact with him is so great. Jimmy the cop, waste disposal guy, Aurelio, Francis, the hotel host, the barmaid, and that old great actor that i always forget the name. I talk too much but had to dump this somewhere. Rarely have i seen an action movie with such satisfying world building.
@@Nardrasil Oh, dump away my friend! That was brilliant and loved reading it! I think that's the magic of this scene, the multiple meanings and connotations the viewer gets in one second from an "oh" because of the build up and characterization! 👍

I love how Viggo starts with "I heard you struck my son" to get Aurelio's attitude and hear his side rather than straight up assuming. Similarly Aurelio instantly recognizes the car but still asks "where'd you get that car" and "did you kill him".
It's subtle, but Aurelio is a sly fox. "Did you kill him or what?" If they actually managed to kill John, this wouldn't have been such a massive issue. Hell, if they didn't kill the dog this could have been resolved. However, that last line was all Aurelio needed to hear
Exactly! If the gang killed John after killing his dog, Aurelio probably wouldn't be so livid. He probably just say that "you just brushed off death REALLY close there". The same goes if they only stole John's car while leaving John and his dog alive (maybe Viggo can make a big apology and compensate John afterwards). Once he heard what they did and John is still alive, he knows all Iosef did is provoking Death incarnation itself to descend upon them all.
Think if they had killed John he'd of actually changed the VIN or still declined, perhaps a little more politely and directed him to tell his father who he killed and swiped the car from? I bet Viggo would still be upset.
Given how close Aurelio was shown to be with John in Chapter 2, I wouldn't be surprised if Aurelio attended Hellen's funeral like Marcus did. Making Iosef's last line hit that much harder.
It's probably not too far fetched to think that had Iosef killed John when he had the chance, either Marcus or Caine(if he decided to come out of retirement for it) would've killed Iosef
@@PrimeCypher He would only understand if he was aware of WHO they just stole from...but clearly they didn't. And they still covered Iosef's ass until they died, and they couldn't even see the face of the one who came for retribution.
@@SoldierOfFate The look of concern is from doubt, Aurelio said it himself "I work *with* your father" not *for* . Which underscores there is a mutual working relationship that Aurelio is not hired staff but someone who has Viggo's ear and perhaps someone who Viggo seeks counsel from. The latter somewhat can be estabalished by the simple fact that Viggo call's Aurelio directly instead of doing a hit on him.
I imagine that in some alternate universe where Viggo managed to keep Iosef alive and kill Wick, afterwards he’d go to Aurelio and demand compensation for his struck son…which would be nothing more than just one gold coin. Or like a paltry sum of cash or something. Society demands that he take “retribution” for his son but the circumstances are such that actually harming Aurelio for it would be completely uncalled for. I’d also love to see the alternate universe where John got up to use the bathroom just before Iosef broke in and so isn’t caught by surprise. One fight later the three idiots are on the floor. He ties them up, puts him in his basement, checks their IDs and sees they’re connected to Viggo, and gives Viggo a call. “Hello Viggo.” “Hello John. I must admit I am surprised to hear from you.” “Yeah.” “I heard about your wife. I’m very sorry.” “Thanks.” “Is there a reason for this call?” “Yeah. Good talking to you, Viggo.” “You too, John.”
You know, that would have made a great opening sequence as well. It would have been a completely different movie, of course; maybe Iosef keeps trying to take down John and he keeps trying to not kill him without Viggo's permission, or something, but that would have been an amazing film idea.
@@z0rrofan9 I imagine that movie would be about Iosef thinking Viggo was testing him to see if he would remain in his shadow under his protection, or to take the initiative and kill John thus proving his is ready to lead the family. The movie would see Iosef slowly descending into madness after being constantly told off by Viggo who stops everyone of his plans with Iosef eventually taking Viggo prisoner telling him that he would make him proud with John rescuing him and the two working together to put a end to Iosef's madness leading to a ending that sees Iosef killing Viggo then losing a final battle to John.

Even if he wasn’t his mechanic, there are things that stick in your mind without realizing. That’s one vehicle that I am sure that everyone who knew who it belonged to would not have liked to see it parked outside when they were not expecting it.
To be honest, I think the best piece of acting is right at 1:43, after Iosef says "We own you." You see Aurelio go through the understanding that he is, in fact, indebted to Viggo's gang. But then he puts on a brave face and confronts Iosef, saying that he 'works' with his father.
The eye shift where he looks at Iosef at first like “ehhh this guy’s in my garage again”, slightly smiling with a raised eyebrow. Usual business. Then it all sinks into a look of DEEP concern once he got close enough to see whose car Iosef nicked.
@@Little_Kings_Theory Aurelio disliked Yosef due to his arrogance and selfishness. Plus, Yosef laughed at killing John Wick's dog which was a few days after John's wife passed away, leading Aurelio to be disgusted and punch him. Yosef was upset about being punched and meeting his death, but that is his fault. Besides, it's possible there are other organizations that really disliked Yosef that would be glad that he died and feel sorry for John.
I really like that Viggo doesn't just order Aurelio dead. He understands that if Aurelio did hit his son he must have a good reason for it and gives him a chance to explain.
Viggo didn't get where he did by being stupid. He didn't 'forgive' Aurelio, he knows his son, he knows why he son went to Aurelio's place, he understood what had happened and why. @@WhiteScarsEmo 'Comedy' actors are often (certain Adam Sandler-shaped exceptions aside) *exceptionally* good, because comedy needs you to be for it to work. Good timing, being able to change emotion on a switch or produce one entirely at odds with the scene around you, reading scene flow... all things that are important in serious acting and absolutely indispensable in comic acting. And for comedy to really land, there has to be a moment where the laughter stops. I'm probably preaching to the choir, but a good example is Leslie Nielsen's stuff. He got famous for Airplane and Naked Gun, but he was a well-respected actor long before then.
I love how Viggo asks Aurelio why he struck Ioseph. He’s angry, but curious. He knows Aurelio would NEVER do that unless there was a VERY good reason. Turns out, he had the best reason.
When John drank in the glass he offered him, you can imagine the relief in Aurélio stomach. "at least now, I am CERTAIN he doesn't consider mugging me"
The moment Aurelio heard what happened he probably had already picked a car, pulled up the seats, picked the best booze he had, and waited. Knowing John would come, and he wanted to put his best foot forward. A "Bro, I had nothing to do with it" gesture.
Funny thing it that you see the camera pass that car at the start of the scene but you don't realise it when you first see the movie but certainly do on further viewings.
This "OH" from Vigo tells more than the complete film. He knows now, that his biggest and really feared problem came to life. JOHN WICK! And he knew: his son f***ed up really hard. Very impressive scene. One of my absolute favourites from J.W.
Sid the sloth is scary man John Leguizamo is actually really threatening in this role, he demands respect while on screen Every actor in this movie is fantastic John Wick is almost a strange anomaly in the world of Cinema, it feels unlike anything else and I love it
Viggo's "Oh," was compounded because he already had information John Wick's wife had passed from a cruel sickness. Then, when he receives word that his own son killed John Wick's dog and stole his car, he knew from years of previous experience with John that there was going to be a serious reckoning.
I know many people have said in the comments on this scene it's just a dog, but there are many factors that are being missed. They broke into his house(you break into my house your not leaving alive), assaulted John, killed the last gift his wife gave him while he is mourning her, stole his car and on top of that Viggo broke his promise to John on leaving John alone period....it Viggo's fault his son was arrogant, stupid and didn't know who he was....so to Viggo's son....Taste the Rainbow!
I mean, I'll fuck someone up over most of these singularly. From my dead wife's respect to my dog to my car to invading my castle, any one of these would command a proper fuck about. Imo. I'm looking at my dog now and thinking about the time I loosened someone's teeth for saying they would steal him. Let alone the grieving of my wife. To be clear here, John in the story is the most justified murderer in literature lol. We're not even speaking on how Viggo son dismantled decades worth of trust building in an assassin organization. Disturbing John's peace is enough.
You may have forgotten one thing. The silver car that had the baseball bat lodged in the windscreen, when John enters the garage, that was probably his wife's car that he understandably couldn't bear to part with. One more factor.
John knew the car was gonna be there & Aurelio confirmed it was. Which means John accepted the respect from Aurelio for not willing to be involved despite being a part of Viggo's empire.
The difference between this scene and the scene where he gets his car back in JW2 shows how much John respects Aurelio and values their friendship. I also enjoy how Aurelio has a chair ready for John.
Aurelio is old guard, he's like the front lobby guy at the hotel, he knows how things go and where the respect goes, he understands the world he's in and that's why he has a drink and stuff ready for John and stuff like that.
He certainly respects, John, and those exactly what happened to him and how he’s going to respond. His goal was to not become collateral damage. He knew he was coming. He had a chair and another glass ready.
He knows John will come for him and the drinks were a sign if John will trust him or will kill him. Notice how John didn't take his offer at first maybe thinking it was spiked, but after hearing his side, John drank it all showing he trusts him.
Just to add to this a year or so later... its also notably one of the few times characters share a drink, and interactions end without violence. A recurring theme i believe thruout the series until maybe the 4th

I never noticed that John is already there before Viggo calls. The implication is that John is only about an hour behind Iosef - who doesn't even realise what he's done yet. Iosef was already inches from the grim reaper.
After you realize the body count John piled up by the end of Chapter 4, you can feel what Aurelio felt when he saw that car, and also the weight of that, "Oh."
Heck, even just Chapter 1. Viggo built a massive, multi generational criminal empire on the foundation of all the murders John committed in order to secure his release from the organization. By the time John got ahold of Iosef, Viggo's organization was thoroughly decimated, with hundreds of loyal crew members dead and his legacy destroyed. Iosef would have done less damage to his father's organization with a nuclear bomb.
While I do like all of the John Wick movies, they really started to go too over the top after the second one. The first two felt grounded with a bit of mystery surrounding this society of assassins that you were really invested in, especially the first film. There was loads of action for sure, but there was also character development like the famous speech Vigo gives about John and why he is so terrifying. We stopped getting that in 3 and 4 and I think it was to the franchise's detriment. The action is great in all of them, but you can really feel how much they were trying to one-up the last movie and doing so didn't really benefit the films. While I'm glad I watched the other three in the series, I do think John Wick would have been a much more potent film as a stand-alone instead of becoming a franchise.
4 felt a bit over the top for me, with everyone having armored clothing and using it like a shield all the time, especially John. I appreciate Keanu is getting older and might not be physically able to do the more demanding stuff that doesn't go into stuntman territory, but I wish they'd gone a different route. Constantly using the armored suit as a crutch felt like it was taking away from his ability as a master assassin and gun fighter. I still enjoyed the movie, but that facet of it really kind of stuck out for me. In the first movie it really showed how why he was so revered in his circles while still allowing him to not be 100% perfect. I really don't think any of the other three movies were able to top it.
@@emberparadox458 He's been using that crutch since the 2nd movie. The first one was a basic revenge plot with some stealth/tactical elements. All the other ones became shooting sports. I just found the 2 he-shes (Rose and Dillon) to be particularly obnoxious, the latter moreso.

I always love the fact that John is so angry, even with his calm demeanor on the exterior. He doesn't change his t-shirt. Nor need to explain himself. I need a car wasn't a request. And Aurelio gave him it out of respect and pure fear.
It applies to everything in life. No matter how tough you are, how much of a badass, how strong you think you are There’s always somebody tougher. Period.
Here’s a little tidbit of trivia that people may not know in reference to this scene. John Leguizamo auditioned twice for the role of Aurelio and finally got it despite the fact that he is a brain dead communist idiot leftist POS.
What i love about this scene is that it sets up John so perfectly, showing that he is so well known that even those at the top of the pecking order watch themselves when it comes to Wick.

The fact that viggo called aurelio instead of just setting a hit on him establishes that there’s a good amount of respect between them and combined with the fact that viggo could of just killed him for putting his hands on his son ALONE but he gave him the respect to at least tell him what happened instead of out right killing him
Not only did Viggo spare Aurelio, but like him, he felt sorry for John despite hiring assassins to kill him.
Because Aurelio would rather face viggo than John wick 😂
He obviously worked with them before , hence why the kid took the car there first. So Viggo probably found it odd that Aurelio would just hit his kid when he clearly knows who he is. I

@@JSRbowling595 I'm also pretty confident that Viggo has had to clean up his son's messes before.
I like that it tells us everything that we need to know about John Wick, before we got the actual backstory monologue from Viggo.
Aurelio is a friend of John's, and even HE was afraid when John walked in after it all went down. He KNEW it was all over, and that old connections didn't matter anymore. Anyone was in the crosshairs if they got in the way. Beautifully filmed
Anyone who knew John Wick knew better, and Aurelio knew what happens when John Wick goes out to kill someone.
i didnt read it at all. Aurelio knew he didn't cross John, he had nothing to be afraid of. all he had to do was tell the truth.
@@steveswangler6373exactly. This.
- Works for Viggo
- John trust him with a drink and sits with him despite being on revenge mode
- Probably gave Theon a little more time before dying by making him leave
- Punches Theon knowing full well that, John Wick or not, Viggo could still make him pay.
- Cooperates with John as soon as he comes in
- Has an unspoken understanding with Viggo that punching his son didn't even matter, and asking for apologies would be a waste of time at this point.
I don't like action movies in general but the mythos they build around John and how the characters interact with him is so great. Jimmy the cop, waste disposal guy, Aurelio, Francis, the hotel host, the barmaid, and that old great actor that i always forget the name.

Funny thing was they easily had the best opportunity to kill wick at his weakest, when he had no will to fight on
It's subtle, but Aurelio is a sly fox.

“Hello John. I must admit I am surprised to hear from you.”

Iosef was already inches from the grim reaper.
Iosef was on borrowed time the moment Daisy took her last breath.
"You got a f**kin pair on you, old man!"
Theon Greyjoy saying that line is never gonna get old.
@@emberparadox458 1 and 4 were the best for me. 2/3 were mind-numbing.

The trailer of this movie should have just been that scene. Don’t even see Keanu. “…oh”
Everyone’s butts would have been in those seats. Who’s John Wick, why is this dude scared, and why is killing the dog such a big deal?
(One awesome movie experience later)
Oh.
That "Oh" at the end carried the weight of all the disappointed fathers of lousy sons.
RESPECT! This whole film revolves around the lack of it, or the ignorance of it by the young ones.
*"Where'd you get that car?"*
Aurelio knew it's about to go down.
I like how theyre casually having a drink on top of what looks to be a '70 charger
"oh"....... so much said with just one word lmao.
This scene hits different when you've seen all the movies and know whats hes capable of.
One word shows Viggo's switch from angry to afraid and its beautiful.
Aurelio even pouring some wine knowing it could be the last thing he ever does.
Up until now I completely missed Aurelio's staff stopping what they were doing and looking at John Wick walk through their shop. It was subtle but pretty cool.
@@dr7660 It's the equivalent of the Doom Slayer walking into a gun shop.
Aurelio was more than happy to lose a car than his life.
You can buy cars. You cannot buy your life back.
This is one of the best side characters written. Just well written.
I wish John Wick movies stayed grounded.
Same!!!! Second one was still great, but third onwards lost me
I always love the fact that John is so angry, even with his calm demeanor on the exterior. He doesn't change his t-shirt. Nor need to explain himself. I need a car wasn't a request. And Aurelio gave him it out of respect and pure fear.
It applies to everything in life. No matter how tough you are, how much of a badass, how strong you think you are
There’s always somebody tougher. Period.
Ye
Unless you're the toughest
Who's tougher than John Wick in this scenario??? 🤔😂🤣😂🤣
The toughest guy on the planet disagrees.
@@seamenfactory6360 you’ll never be the toughest forever, hence why someone stronger will always show up
Aurelio was underrated
He may not have kill people but the punch and the instant yes sir I did was awsome
Here’s a little tidbit of trivia that people may not know in reference to this scene. John Leguizamo auditioned twice for the role of Aurelio and finally got it despite the fact that he is a brain dead communist idiot leftist POS.
Viggo: complete forgives him because of what he's son did and realizes it's completely unless to kill him because he's going to die
Yosef must be upset that his father wasn't mad at Aurelio for punching him because he deserved it, and gets upset that he punches him twice.
I like it when John just goes to the garage and people just stop whatever they're doing and state at him like " It's Baba Yaga "
You know if Aurelio had just kept the car and then gave back to John when he got there. Probably wouldn't have been 4 kick ass movies though.
But the dog will never come back 🥴🤣🤣🤣🤣
Emilio was such a badass character. I think we need more of him.
Aurelio
What i love about this scene is that it sets up John so perfectly, showing that he is so well known that even those at the top of the pecking order watch themselves when it comes to Wick.
“Oh”. Very understandable.
Indeed. "Goddaammmmit!"
That time when Luigi the Plumber and Shadow the Hedgehog shared screen time
That look on vigo's face when he say OH... He knew we all are fucked and nobody can do anything.... Lifes over
"I'll tell ya somethin' he's gonna understand" coldest line in the movie 🥶 🍿
Which is precisely what he did
Aurelio looks so scared after seeing that car he knows John wick's car
His response was “oh”
Damn the villain knew he had something fucked up
See I don’t even think Viggo is a villain. He’s a father trying to protect his son against immeasurable odds. Basically he’s between a rock and a hard place. The villain in this movie is his son.
"My idiotic son has doomed us all."
That short phone conversation expresses more gravitas than the following 3 films put together. It is an immaculate set up and execution.
I love how everyone in there picked up a weapon once Aurelio was threatened with a gun. They all had his back.
