I kind of wonder, if he'd been willing to beg for his son's life, maybe John would have been willing to leave it there.
Obviously John would have needed something and that something wouldn't have been money, but maybe if Viggo had been strong enough to beg it wouldn't have ended up going to where it did.

"It's not what you did but who you did it to". Personally I'd be just as annoyed by what he did, Iosef was Heir Apparent to the New York criminal Empire yet here he was breaking into houses, stealing cars, and killing puppies like a two-bit street thug. If I were Viggo I would hope my son had higher standards.

That's why he sends a crew to Wick's house to kill Wick, then hires Marcus (Willem Dafoe) to kill Wick, and then hires Ms. Perkins (Adrianne Palicki) to kill Wick, puts a protection detail on his son, and even had him hidden away at a safehouse... He tried to protect his son right up until the point Wick put a shotgun in his face. This scene was not him accepting his sons fate. I think John was looking for a reason to stand down, otherwise he would have hung up as soon as Viggo introduced himself. Iosef in hearing he has wronged someone of such consequence, his first instinct is not to be humble, and show remorse, but to escalate and try to kill him. Even Viggo, who knows precisely how dangerous John is, can't bear to humble himself before him during the phone call. He offers "condolences" for the death of his wife but never once offers apologies for how his son has wronged him. He condescends by saying "let *US* not resort to our baser instincts" as if both sides were somehow equally at fault for their current predicament.

The way they cut between the ruzzian mafia boss chastising his son, and John digging up his retribution from his 'retirement' fund is pure cinematic genius. Even as we watch the father knows is son is a dead man, you can see it in his face, he knows John Wick. He does his best to save his son.But when John gets to the bath house the boy is at, brilliant fight scene.

I wonder how the James Bond franchise would’ve thought that half of their audience would literally go to a guy who is a Russian hitman working for the Russian mob. He was retired who goes on a vengeful killing spree about them, killing his dog, stealing his car and blowing up his house and putting a major contract on the hit for him. Wow this is great.
