Shughart and Gordon requested permission three times before they were allowed to insert. They knew they were likely going to their deaths but were willing to do so to save the life of a brother soldier. They were both awarded the Medal of Honor, and deservedly so. How many of the critics have that kind of courage? ...I didn't think so.

@@stewban007 The pilots Mike Durant & Ray Frank survived the crash alongside the two crew chiefs Tommy Field and Bill Cleveland. Frank, Cleveland, and Field died after the Somali's overran the crash site along with Sergeant 1st Class, Randy Shughart and Master Sergeant, Gary Gordon while Mike Durant was taken as a hostage and was held captive for 11 days before being returned. The footage on the news of bodies being dragged down the streets of Mogadishu were the bodies of the Super 6-4 crew and their defenders.
The movie depicts that only Durant survived the crash but his book In The Company of Heroes which is about his experience mentions all 4 being alive, just varying injuries from the impact of the crash.

Really weird focus here. From the "fact vs fiction" title I would have expected some analysis about the accurate portrayal of the military engagement and tactics used in real life vs the movie. Instead I got a "this type of sunglasses was not available in 1993", which feels really irrelevant and shallow. That's not really "fact vs fiction", but more like minor goofs you can find in any type of movie.

Here some actual fun fact about the real Blackhawk down.
    1. They did not lose just 2 Blackhawk, they actually lost 5 Blackhawk, they only account super 61 and 64 because they crash in the battle. Other three Blackhawk managed to land away from the battle after getting hit with rockets.
    2. MOH Gary Gordon and MOH Randy Shughart, flew in Super 62 providing sniper cover for the down Super 64, requested multiple times to be inserted but was denied due to the fact that they already lost two Blackhawks. Just after they’re request was approved, Super 62 actually hovered over Super 64 and providing cover with the mini gun for Gordon and Shughart, a RPG hit the under belly of the Super 62, causing Super 62 to fly back to the airfield, barely almost making it back.
    3. Not depicted in this video but the call sign *Star 4-1* were the two original pilots in the little birds in the film, that was actually at the Battle of Mogadishu .

Weren’t Shughart and Gordon aboard Super Six 8? There are some other interesting things to add that the movie changed, so basically fun fiction, to contrast with the fun facts:
      1. Hoot and Sanderson, the two badass Deltas, are not entirely real characters but based on real Delta members, the names are ficticious though.
      2. Grimes, the ranger who tags along with Sanderson, is also a fictional name, based on a real ranger.
      3. Doc Schmid, who tries to save the private shot in the leg, was actually a Delta medic IRL, although in the movie he is portrayed as a Ranger.
      4. Apparently, the africans who acted as somalis speak an entirely different language that is very distinct from what actual Somalis speak.
      5. The Pakis and Malays complained after the movie was released that they were severely undercredited for going into the city to rescue the americans.

no, Super 6-8 was the Combat Search And Rescue helicopter that inserted Delta and Air Force medics as well as a team of Rangers and an Air Force Combat Controller into the 6-1 crash site. Gary and Randy were aboard Super 6-2 as depicted, but a third Delta sniper, Brad Halling, is omitted from the film. He actually took ocer the right side minigun after the crew chief manning it was wounded. While providing air cover for Gary and Randy, Super 6-2 was struck by an RPG between the copilot's door and the minigun. Brad lost half of his left leg in the explosion.
While Hoot and Sanderson ARE amalgoms of real Delta Operators, Norm "Hoot" Hooten was one of them. Paul Howe was the basis for Sanderson but his interaction with Grimes about the Ranger's injured foot actually happened with Air Force Pararescueman Tim Wilkinson in a small house across the road from the first crash. The actions of Delta Operator John "Mace" Macejunas were also worked into Hoot.

Not so sure about Pilla being on the .50, in the book it states he was a 60 gunner, sitting in a rear passenger seat, assisting the .50 gunner. And Pilla was struck in the head by a burst of rifle fire, not in the neck, by one shot, like in the movie.
And another inaccurate part was that Super 61 crashed in a small alleyway, up against a small wall, not a large intersection as shown in the movie.

The biggest fiction is - they omitted the true story how US soldiers got away alive at the end.
It was Pakistan and Malaysian armies who actually Present not far from the two crash sites.
Pakistan Army leading the US Rangers QRF and, with the help of effective speculative fire, reached the crash site without any loss. Two of the tanks took position on the shoulders of the narrow street, where entrapped Rangers were fighting for their lives inside a building, whilst the other team took position on road crossings on either side of this street.
US Rangers dismounted and went into the street while the Pakistani tanks kept on exchanging fire with the Somalis, preventing their efforts to get into the same street.
Rangers started coming out of the narrow street and started mounting the APCs, but owing to some wrong calculation of APCs, it became difficult to accommodate everyone.
Meanwhile, Somalis were reorganizing to quell efforts of rescue force; and started bringing heavy fire at the place where APCs were parked. Therefore, remainder US personnel were accommodated in tanks and APCs of Pak Army.
Even still some were left and had to run with the cover for Pakistani APC’s, this is what’s called Mogadishu Mile. Troops mainly from 75th Ranger Regiment was a part of Mogadishu Mile

Other than the Oakley sunglasses, I don't think Hoot being in the marketplace was fiction. Maybe Hoot the character/person might be fiction, but someone like him was probably there.
    Someone on Quora explains:
"While the film definitely wasn’t an accurate depiction of the events surrounding the Battle of Mogadishu, that particular scene wasn’t inaccurate itself. There were numerous arms dealers, mercenaries, reporters, and intelligence operatives in the city and the country at that time so while Hoot might have appeared to be “American” (the actor who portrays him, Eric Bana is Australian) he wouldn’t have stood out too prominently from the many other Westerners in the city.
Additionally, kidnapping foreigners only came later when the Somali militias and later Al-Shabaab (A Muslim extremist group based mostly in Somalia) discovered how lucrative it could be. At the time of the film’s setting, foreigners freely wandered around, although some might have had armed security (or been armed themselves) to prevent crimes like street robberies and assaults. Given Hoot’s size and the fact that he was probably armed, most Somalis probably steered clear of him as they didn’t need the “hassles”.
Finally, the Somalis, despite their depiction in the film, aren’t stupid people. They probably knew who Hoot was, and what he was doing, and they were surveilling him while he was watching them. So long as he didn’t interfere in their ongoing operations, they had no reason to detain him or try to kidnap him. They watched him, watching them, and that was the extent of things.
Again there are a number of unrealistic scenes in the film, but that wasn’t one of them."

Unknown TradeMark the fact of the matter is that most of the Somali militiamen had seen way more combat than both the US army rangers or Delta Force. Without the massive air support the US forces had and without the assistance from Pakistani and Malaysian UN forces the entire US force would have been overrun and killed or captured, ie annihilated.

seydiga umada muslimiinta yes, they go all together BUT, the pakistani soldier stop at a street and said they can’t go because they don’t have enough tech for night mode i think and then the Malaysian soldier take over from there. You can even search “black hawk down malaysia” and see them(malaysian armies) talking about the operation. There’s three armies involved, the malaysian, pakistani and america. The us armies have tried three times to go saved their people but failed then there come the malaysian armies. I just wanna say here, the pakistani armies refused to go because they don’t have the night tech or smt like that.

@@Anastasia-ec1vh I'm malaysian. But pakistani did help on the miles. Malaysia lead the convoy and suddenly two of malaysian apc got caught in a shooting that seperates them from the rest of the convoy. One died. Others survived because usa delta force operator and 10th mountain division come to help. One American soldier died helping out severely injured malaysian. To be precise, USA did fail three times. Only because those three times they came in small numbers. The successful convoy is much larger. 12 helicopter, 4 spy plane, 16 humvees, several foot soldiers and 3 trucks from USA, 28 malaysian apc, 4 tanks, and several foot soldiers of Pakistan. Malaysia lead into mogadishu, USA provide backup and do most of the kill. And pakistani provide a secure place. There is no room for the rescued soldiers in those vehicles. So they walked. Pakistan did help during mogadishu miles that occur during the day. Their tanks can operate on days. 18 USA, 1 Malaysia, 1 Pakistan died

Afiq Duddin WOWWW very detailed. Sorry, i tried to search as many as i can but there’s no information this detailed. Thank you. Btw I’m just trying to say at least give some credit to Malaysia’s soldiers. That’s the least that they can do. Btw I’m very thankful to find your detailed comment ✌🏻

Unless your friends dad is Michael Durant, then he wasn’t in the crash of Super 64. Durant was the only survivor. The two crew chiefs died on impact, there’s speculation with Tommy field and Raymond Frank (the co-pilot) as whether they really died on impact of the helicopter as said in Durants book “In the company of heroes”. Regardless the only single person to survive anything that happened at the 64 crash site was the pilot Michael Durant.

according to the novel black hawk down, the rpgs were rigged with a timer to blow up. that created a flak effect to bring down the helicopters.

    • @SamBrickell
      @SamBrickell 6 років тому +9

You are incorrect. There were dozens-to-hundreds of RPG's and RPG's have 4 second fuses which can quite easily be used to create flak.

Tal Alpern from what I remember, they estimated that 400 hundred RPG were fired off at the choppers. The movie makes it look like they had amazing aim, meanwhile they actually relied on numbers being able to eventually hit a chopper.
