So what irons is classed as long/short. I would say 8i - wedge short. This would mean 7i to release club like Tiger? Is that correct? Also same for driver? Thanks 👍🏼
Y’all are seriously give the best free advice out there! Totally explains why I can always hit my 8 and 9i really well and struggle mightily with my 4/5i’s. Took this advice to the range yesterday and the ball was launching out there!
This is an important video to watch for all weekend golfers. Many teachers say to swing all of your irons the same, but I've always felt there was a major difference between long and short irons but I could never put my finger on it, this proves my theory and explains a lot.
You guys are brilliant coaches to say the least. I have followed you for two years straight. Yes l am still a HCP 24, doing between 100-111 net on stroke play or 21-29 Stableford every weekend. Mid-week l play 9 holes and range between 46 - 51 stroke play net. My mid-game needs a lot of work and slowly l am improving as l watch some key things like smart play tactics on your channel. On driving, l watched your vids loyally including the one with Dustin (what a player 👌), and since then l have managed on a regular to hit 250-301 drives fairway regulation. Please keep on keeping brothers. Stay blessed.
Viewed this video a few weeks ago and always set up my ball in the center of my stance for iron shots. Hitting the greens was a problem always ended missing by 30 yds. First time out over a 9 hole practice I saw a significant improvement with 4 pars. Today I shot 4 over par on 9 holes including 2 birdies and one double bogey which was a driver error! I play of 21! So hitting the green has improved. Thanks for a great channel!
Brilliant video. Wasn't really aware of just how different the short and long irons were apart from the set up. Now I'm noticing all the top pros tweak their swings for every kind of club
Starting to become my favourite golf channel. Thanks guys, Question: Where should you be balancing on your feet during the setup, wind up and strike? Are you over the balls of your feet? Further back? How bent are your knees? Do you start off with locked knees? How engaged are your quads?
You guys are the best for real... went to the range today to try these tricks and was absolutely striking all my irons (even my 4 🙌) watching your UA-cam vids has dropped my score down 20 strokes in a year
Driver off the deck: just wanted to let you know that after watching your video in Spring about using the driver off the deck, I incorporated it into my game this past summer, and wow was that amazingly helpful. The guys in my league we're surprised that I would use a driver for a second shot for distance, and really were amazed at how it worked. So thanks for that!!
Thank you for posting this great content. I've been struggling hitting my 4 iron, but today at the range, I was hitting it pure because I watched this video. I was getting great trajectory too. Keep up with the great content! ⛳ 🔥 🥇 👏🏼 👌🏼
This is a valuable video to differentiate the long and short iron technic as well as release parttern to train your wrist properly. Thanks Me and my golf!
I had the same problem I noticed it being a bit of fatigue after nine holes which made my mechanics sloppy so I kept hitting the range getting back in shape and I saw better results
@@bennyrodriguez7419 I agree, a lot of times when I used to play 18, fatigue came up plus it doesn't help I have a long-term back injury, so I really have to adjust.
Just fatigue i mostly play nine, only time i play 18 if it is in the morning. Then the body habdles it fine, but if i olay after work, or just even in the afternoon on holidays, the brain and body fatigues too fast. Nine is perfect
Just been to the range here and was great upto the 5 iron, struggled with the 3 & 4 as I could not release through. After watching this I think my Sternum was the same as for the shorter Irons and I did not adjust behind the ball enough resulting in mostly blocked right shots! Great Video Guys, Thanks : )
This is something people don't talk about. I have been away from the game for a couple of years and went to a lesson. First thing the pro spoke about was the lie and plane. It changed my game instantly. Great video. Would to see something about though process and the mental aspects of the game (especially when you are over the ball)
Hey guys love the video. Question: at what point do you start making the change from “short iron swing” to “long iron swing?” Can you use either swing in the mid iron clubs depending on what you’re trying to achieve? Or is it short iron swing up to 7 iron and then long iron swing from 6 iron and up? Thanks!
So THAT's why I hook my short clubs on occasion! After playing for the past 17 years, I never realized the difference in finishes between a long and a short iron...Thank you..
This has been the most constructive video for my game in ages. I play off 7.6 but I only play once a month so some unexplained bad habits have crept in and have lead to inconsistency . I can’t believe how simple the techniques you’ve explained and ball position has dramatically improved my grouping on each club. It’s also helped my driving with the rotation through impact. Thank you 🙏🏻
I love all your videos... I am 15 handicap, and im struggling against the chicken wing, trying to rote my wrist after the impact. But when I do it, the ball is going on a big hook !
Wow... this was amazing, I just started 3 months ago, been going to the driving range every day but I did not know this "release" type of stuff! Great, thanks!
Fantastic video guys!!! I’ve been struggling with my long irons and it never occurred to me that I was not releasing the club properly. I’ll be at the range tomorrow!
This is actually kind of fascinating how different these two techniques are...it does make me think about flipping a little bit with the long irons. I have that issue occasionally. I see that you two made a video about flipping roughly 5 years ago, I will check it out.
This helped... my ball placement and stance width is always an issue for me ... I think this video is gonna really help out and dial things in... especially the long iron segment. thx guys
Hi, I'm new in golf and literaly learn from youtube and your channel is one of the best reference. So far I stick to learn how to use short iron (9). My question is: from your perspective, which better? Learn various clubs or learn it one by one untill we get use to hit with it? Thank you and appreciate for your feedback..
Only started back golf after a few years and I’ve been practicing par 3’s and hitting my 9 iron very well, then one hole was 215 yards and I couldn’t swing the 5 iron for the life of me, really helpful video must try new swing with 5 iron
I use this and it works. One addition is I aim at the ground about 3" in front of the ball and right on my target line. The shorter the club the shorter the distance I aim in front of the ball. Ball placement is the same relative to my left foot with all irons woods and hybrids. Except driver. This give you consistent distant.
Could you please try and simplify what the correct amount of hip rotation and weight distribution through the swing is, maybe with a good drill to ensure consistency? Thanks guys, love the videos!
I know this video is a few years old, but wow does it shine light on something I've never taken notice of. When I finish my short irons as shown in this video, I get as much distance as if I've tried a huge follow through, if not more and am way more accurate. Just didn't realise that was the thing. No more round the neck finishes from 7-PW :D
I definitely struggle more with the long irons. I feel as though I have so much more control over the shot, and my body, with the short irons. This video was very helpful. I've been trying the drills and they're definitely helping
Fantastic video guys, thank you. I tried this on the range a few days ago and started to see some major improvements in my iron accuracy! Two questions I got from my practice: 1) I noticed that swinging with the shorter iron, less release technique, that I lost about 10 yards of distance on each iron compared to a full release, longer iron swing. Is that what is supposed to happen? Sacrificing some distance but gaining accuracy? 2) Do you find yourselves ever doing the short iron technique for your longer irons or vice versa? At least in terms of release of the club? For example, if you have a tight green 200yds out you want to try to hit with a long iron (4-iron for example), maybe club up to a 3-iron and hit the short iron release for better accuracy? Thanks for all the work you guys put into these videos! Very helpful.
Great video guys! In the take away with long irons, you want to delay the wrist movement to get a more level attack angle... But for how long and do all long irons involve the exact same take away?
Hey guys, I’ve just started getting into golf so I’m not really sure what questions to ask. I’ve watched a few of your videos already. But, how do I know which club to use and when? I’ll probably have a lot more questions down the road and your videos have helped a lot so far. Thanks!
I just watched your video with rory and the par ten u guys played with seb, Rick, and Peter. Today, I need this tip here. Short irons r giving me a spot of trouble.
It's cleared my confusion about release pattern of long and short iron. Is release pattern you explained for long iron is true for fairway wood and driver.
I know this is an old video but wholly crap did this help me. I was putting the ball in the middle of my stance for my longer irons and was just struggling so bad. Moved it to one club length back and wow!!!!! I still have issues with chicken wing but one thing at a time
I struggled with this in the beginning initially, so you'll have to practice. Tip.. practice a lot, keep your body absolutely still and plant your feet. The only moving you should be doing is the top half with rotating, coming down with your swing and back foot trailing and keeping your arms straight as heck like a pendulum. If you even move your front foot up or sway back, game over, you will top. Keep your body still and use that trunk. The rest will work itself out. Good luck.
Thanks for the video… my problem is the slight changes from pitching wedge to long irons.. do you just make it set in your mind.. gap to 9 iron - use short iron finish… 8ir to 6 ir: part of your long iron swing? Then 5, 4, 3.. long irong swing?
Very nice gents, thank you. Lots of very useful information in such a short time. So no change in swing plane for long v shorts? (my swing plane changes with the same club with every swing mind...)
Excellent video. Going to try these practice tips. Perhaps you guys can provide a practice tip on how to keep from dropping your shoulders in the swing. For some reason when I lean over the golf ball with a short iron, I tend to drop my shoulders some and block my swing out. This kills my power and causes me to push shots right on occasion.
Hey guys love ur videos always take something away. Can u talk about playing full swing shots with wedges into greens 56° 60° etc vs. Playing pitching wegde
One question I have about this video is about his wrists during the shot...I know you are supposed to rate through with you wrists on long irons and opposite with short irons, but on the back swing are you supposed to rotate your wrists back or almost just like hinge your wrists back (like a door hinge)?
Long Irons - Stay sloooooow ! Because there is a natural tendency in knowing you have to hit it far, it is extremely easy to get "quick". You must make a deliberate effort to stay slow throughout the swing. As always a good long iron hitter, slow is my key swing thought every time. Staying slow actually gets you more clubhead speed because the release tends to remain late and full.
Guys, Got a question regarding direction. When I hold it for the short irons I got the tendency to push it a bit or at least end up right of the flag. When I look at the video, Piers seems to hit it also much further right than where the flags are...was that on purpose or what has to be on focus to hit it straight to the flag? Cheers...and thx for many bright moments in my Golf understanding 😉
Which iron do you struggle most with, long iron or short iron and why do you think this is?
Gotta be the long irons, not the case from now on. Which numbers are the long irons, and which are the short irons? Is 7-iron the longest short iron?
Should the release of a driver be more similar to that of long irons? I tend to release all my clubs more like what you have shown for short irons.
I struggled with my wedges until I got the shafts extended 2 inches! Also still struggle with my 5i more than my 3i
What about 3 and 5 woods. Do you hit these different from the Driver?

Illuminating lesson here. Short irons would be from GW, PW to 7 iron only? please advise :)
What are your tips on ensuring you don’t top a shot with an iron, hybrid, and driver?
I struggled with this in the beginning initially, so you'll have to practice. Tip.. practice a lot, keep your body absolutely still and plant your feet. The only moving you should be doing is the top half with rotating, coming down with your swing and back foot trailing and keeping your arms straight as heck like a pendulum. If you even move your front foot up or sway back, game over, you will top. Keep your body still and use that trunk. The rest will work itself out. Good luck.

Where would you guys consider the long irons to finish and short irons to start... 4-7 long, 8-PW short?
Where do u make the split club wise to decide which technique to use. Do I swing the 7 iron like a short iron or a long iron?
