An excellent video on long irons Chris! I am of the generation that grew up hitting long irons. Although I still love hitting them, my clubhead speed has subsided and I have now relented and gone to the recommended hybrid. As you suggested, the distance is there as well as a nice ball flight. Hopefully your experienced golfers will heed your advice to replace the long iron with the hybrid.
Hi Chris - thanks for all your great videos, I really love your presentation style. I'm a player with a bit slower swing speed, and would love to replace my 5 and 4 irons with hybrids - but unfortunately I struggle with hybrids and woods going quite left, whereas my longer irons I can keep straight (but my carry distance suffers). I have my irons set 2 degrees flat, and I suspect that hybrids are a bit too upright and I can't seem to keep the face from closing at impact. A future video with some tips and drills to help with this would be amazing!
I know at age 65 I should be using hybrids more often. But there's nothing in golf more fun and pleasing than hitting a long iron pure. I will stick with my two iron and four iron for the foreseeable future.
another great video. being rather old now (70), I realize that woods are easier to play than irons. the problem is when the fairway is sloping, how to get well in front of the ball.we know that we have to move laterally. but it's not always obvious to get right. sorry for my bad english writing
First video i saw which describe club speed needed for such clubs. I hit my irons in the 70s and never really achieved the loft i wished on longer irons and never will be, so glad i bought 1 hybrid and probably need one more :)
Great advice on getting comfortable with your long irons, one tip i have for you is to strengthen your grip a little bit that is why you are getting those shots that leak right
Hi Chris, thank you for this. A great video. I recently got rid of my long irons when I updated my set last year. Being Melbourne based and experiencing 6 Covid lockdowns where all courses were closed I started looking into hybrids. So my iron set now starts with a 6, whilst I now have a 4 and 5 hybrid clubs. I only wish I did it earlier as I’ve always struggled with the long irons and these hybrids have restored a bit of confidence now we are allowed back into the courses. 👍😎🇦🇺
I hit my hybrids 195 y and 205 yards respectively. I delofted my irons so much at impact that my dynamic loft on them was less than 10 degrees. Hybrids saved my long game. Great video CR. thank you.
Great content Chris. I game up to 5 iron and I do find I'm inconsistent with 5 and yes the ball does in forward so this set up should help me. I also carry a 3 hybrid which I absolutely flush 👍
Is there a rule of thumb for the iron vs. hybrid decision ? For example, I swing my driver at 85 mph. Where, in my set, would I transition to a hybrid ?
There's no rule of thumb. There are also many long iron/hybrid, well, "hybrids" now. And it depends a lot on your attack angle and what you struggle with. If you have trouble hitting the ball high, go for more hybrids. If you have trouble with hitting the ball way left, fewer hybrids. *Edit: I feel that I can be more helpful. If you want a rule of thumb, hit your five iron. If it goes in the air high enough to hit and stay on a green and it goes 10 yards farther than your 6 iron, then keep your 5 iron. If not, get a hybrid.

Chris, a simple video that has fully explained and covered everything to do with playing long irons, hybrid it is then 👍
Many thanks Darran
Thanks Darren, I think that’s a smart move

Hi Chris! What is that technology you used to get the data from your golf clubs?
Great advice on getting comfortable with your long irons, one tip i have for you is to strengthen your grip a little bit that is why you are getting those shots that leak right
Another great video Chris, thank you. And yep ditched the 3 & 4 irons years ago and love my hybrid!
Thanks

Sounds like a perfect set up to me Marcus, anything over 6 is just really hard and unforgiving
excellent...thanks!!!
Great lesson Chris .... at 74, I play with three or four hybrids depending on the course.
Smart move with the hybrids
This is a great video 👍
Love your videos Chris.
You always give great advice. Now we have to be smart enough to use it and forget the ego. Thanks Chris
Thanks Randy and very true
How to master your long irons: buy a hybrid :D
Kidding - great video. Thanks! I definitely lean back at impact so it was a good reminder.
Great video Chris. I put an 18* 5 wood in the bag. I never could his hybrids with consistency so the 5 wood does it all.
5 woods are becoming a lot more popular, and a great options if you don’t get on with hybrid s
Now that's an explanation that I can understand. Thank for that
My pleasure, glad it helped
Great vid. Thanks..

Hi Chris, great video, i've moved over to hybrids now i'm in my 50's
Smart move, so much easier to use
Would have been nice to see your hybrid shot from behind to see ball flight. Great videos as always.
Thanks and noted 🙏🏻
I use my hybrid so often. I rarely use my 4 iron.
Great content Chris. I game up to 5 iron and I do find I'm inconsistent with 5 and yes the ball does in forward so this set up should help me. I also carry a 3 hybrid which I absolutely flush 👍
Thanks Peter
Hi Chris..What shafts are in your irons and what weight are they ?
Regards Mark..
Hey Mark, I use Dynamic Golf X100 shafts and think they are just over 120g

How well do you hit your 6 iron?

Good question and not easy to answer but I’d probably say 5 would be the longest iron I suggest you vary
Great video and very helpful! What sensor and app are you using to get your data?
Thanks Jerry, this is the Blast sensor, great bit of kit to help the swing
I went from a 4 hybrid to a 9 wood. Even higher and further and easier to hit.
Wow great move, bet that’s a super high flight
Lol if you have Bettinardi wedges in the bag we have the same exact kit. ❤️ my MCs and my carbonwoods. Cheers mate.
Need to try all of this, can hit nearly all my clubs great now but 6 and 5 iron will just not go the extra 20/40 yards!
Hope it helps Alex
I love love love long irons! I wish club makers still made 1 irons. Had to settle for a driving iron.
Yeah not east to get your hands on a 1 iron these days!
Does this 4i look crazy short ?
Is that the amazing gh5 autofocus at play?
great tips though... and the best one is last: play hybrids :)
It’s not, it’s the Sony a7iii
@@ChrisRyanGolf nice camera :)
damn autofocus is a pain all over it seems... drives me nuts trying to record myself!
What app are you using?
ua-cam.com/video/-987jF6cjUI/v-deo.html
Blast golf app in this video 🙏🏻
I refuse to listen or watch any other golf instructors, in fear of harming my golf game. Another great video, excellent content 👍cheers from Colorado
Thanks Sam appreciate that
when you shoot?
nice
Get Hybrids is the answer. :)
I can crush my 4 iron shape it everything ....but the 3...... goes the same distance as my 4
👍👍👍
"Do this, not this"
Literally the same picture.
how to master your long irons? hit it properly! failing that? don't hit them, hit a hybrid.
Sound advice
How to hit your long irons - buy hybrids instead.
Your title is 'how to hit long irons' but you are advising people to buy a hybrid ! Give me a break mate
