You mean high inflation, high unemployed rate, economy was in poor shape. 90s was much better period for America but I get you, you were young that´s why it is the best decade now you have grown old and it sucks. It's not a very comfortable song for her to sing, she swaps between falsetto and regular often as we all do when a range just isnt ideal for our voices, but that's what makes the parts she can really lean into so special. I adore this song, love playing bass and singing background harmonies to it.

I am absolutely in love with "Queens of the Summer Hotel" right now. It was supposed to be the soundtrack to a shelved Broadway take on "Girl, Interrupted" (or so I read). There are some absolute gems on there ("Suicide is Murder" was an immediate favorite) - Aimee's confessional voice and lyrics, a playful use of time signatures and instrumentation, it's just so good - the best (IMO) songs and performances since Magnolia/Bachelor No. 2.
I used to wonder why artists like Aimee Mann weren't more well-known - but then you look at what IS popular and think, "oh, right, I get it - this is ponderous, emotive, and deep. How can that compare with 'WAP'?!?!" I'm just glad that music like this exists.

Aimee Mann seems to have been born to be a rockstar, with her model-esque facial structure, her 6 ft tall frame, topped with that sexy platinum blonde punk style hair. And that soothing voice ...

I couldn't agree with you more I just love her to death and I did not know she was 6 feet tall and someone else on here said that this song is about breaking up with the drummer what a dick why he must have been but anyways this goes out to Amy man you're my sweetheart baby

John Tuttobene you should be thanking the drummer, if they didn't break up, we'd never have this perfect 80's gem

Apparently the drummer had a crush on her and that's it. The song "Voices Carry" lyrics were changed by the big corporation because it was about 2 women. Not a man and a woman. Aimee did refuse a deal that, this song, with the original lyrics, would be performed by Alison Moyet. She kept it for 'til tuesday and changed all the "she" with "he" and some other words here and there. Basically, it was a song about lesbians. I can't confirm Aimee sexual orientation and its none of my business.

I love how all the musicians own their space. They are all doing something different, but balanced and complimentary to the whole song. Give me the 80's or give me head.

    Now MTV is about bullshit
I would pay all the money in the world to go back to the late 70s or

I remember exactly where I was when I heard it in 1985. I was at a church retreat or after Sunday school summer swimming, sports, whatever day. And there was a gal there who I became attracted to simultaneously with this song. I was in grade school. She wasn't interested in me though heh. Very obvious I think maybe. I was too "unchurched," too I guess bad or in "darkness" being a non-church-goer. It was my cousins' church and I'd spent the night and therefore had to go with them next morning.
