Locked. Gary's smile at the beginning is everything. Imagine having that crowd reaction to something you created 30 years ago. And they would still have that same reaction today, over 40 years later. Timeless. Iconic. A masterpiece.
I just watched a recent interview with Gary where he cited this performance, and Trent's comments about Gary's influence, as his way of finally accepting the success of the old songs instead of resenting them because they over-shadow his new music. It was all because of Trent... and for the record, Gary's new music is amazing.
If I remember correctly, there is a tambourine part in the original song, isn’t there? It seems like I remember thinking it sounded great there but it was perfectly out of place in such a heavily electronic and new wave song. The tambourine seems almost ancient. But it really fuels this song in those parts.

I remember when this song was new, and the reaction I got for playing it was getting my ass kicked. There was a hot war going on in music at the time, hell, 50 thousand people nearly burnt down a stadium because they hated Disco. People were seriously feeling threatened by the changing trends in music and some were violent about it.
It’s so beautiful to see Trent pour 100% of his musical talents into that tambourine for this one. Zero ego, just one musician making another sound better. He just backs off and lets Gary steal the show with his baby. These guys are all true professionals.
I'm class of 1986, the early '80s were an awesome time in my life...I remember loving this song. They did Gary Numan right by inviting him on stage to do this. Bravo!
If I had a pound for every time I've watched this. Possibly commented on it before. A band totally on it. A legendary icon and one of his most iconic songs. And a shoutout to the cameraman who does his job so perfectly without getting in the way. Really gives us the feeling of being there.
I just LOVE the crowd's energy!! Such a great song played by super talented musicians and Gary is a class act! I've watched this video at least 20 times or more.
Apologies if I've commented before, but that's how damned good this is...the perfect fusion of the harder NIN sound and Gary's original. Every member of NIN in this performance was rock solid but not once tried to steal the show or take the spotlight away from Gary. THIS is what showing respect to a legend looks like...having his beloved Polymoog on stage was the very definition of "class act". I never get tired of watching this.
Stumbled upon this a while ago. And somehow I keep coming back to it over and over again. Maybe thats just because it utterly kicks ass! I'm drawn to the way Trent goes to town on that tambourine.
Gary went in for a handshake, Trent went in for a hug. That. That is wholesome content right there. The man who made wish, last and terrible lie is giving someone a hug.
“Animal” on drums just destroying it. Loved this song during my youth in the 80’s. This just took it a couple levels higher. Great way to start the morning.
It might be hard to believe, but this has been my only exposure to the Nine Inch Nails. This was an excellent performance. It is funny watching the band because everyone is playing college baseball while the drummer is playing pro football. He seems to be in his own world just dominating. Not to take away from everyone else in the band. It is just funny watching the drummer having the time of his life 🙂
That is the most banging version ever,no mistake 2 icons collaborating, showing respect to each other, acknowledging their influences..and coming up this this! yeah i'd say this kickstarted gary's resurgeance, and about f**king time!!!!
Yes, excellent! At first I admired the quality and observed the movement but when it ended I realize I was just living the moment, the camera was transparent. Great mix on this audio, too!
The cameraman is Rob Sheridan who started as a fan then later on did the graphic design work, music videos for for NIN, HTDA. Recorded with his Canon 5D Mark II. (Oh yeah it’s in the description)
I love the look on his face, that smile at 24 seconds, how an entire arena of kids who probably weren't alive when that song came out suddenly get it and are completely stoked
Trent's band mates are getting younger all the time too while those 2 old guys are still rocking their asses off. We used to roller skate to this way back when lol
I come back to this video over and over and over. It raises my blood pressure a good 10 points and I like it. From the opening lick you can feel the crowd and I want to be there so bad.

There was a hot war going on in music at the time, hell, 50 thousand people nearly burnt down a stadium because they hated Disco. People were seriously feeling threatened by the changing trends in music and some were violent about it.
such a cool song, love how "into it" Gary Numan was...feel like it's the 80s again; and Trent's tambourine skills are off the hook.
Or "on the nipple"????
Line of coke all around and it would be the 80s all over again but with NiN ❤️
Mckinley Daigle couldn’t agree more. 80s kid here.
How about like 1977 they use to kill this tune @ the NCO club in Ft Stewart Ga!
Bravo!
This came out in LATE 1979 ,,
@@theodoreritola7641 The mf future
Your making it sound like it came out in the 80s BUT IT DID NOT It was number 1 in the UK IN 1979
@@theodoreritola7641 And yet it sounded like the future.
Imagine hearing the future in 1979
ThE SAME For me in the 70s This was released in late 1979
Nothing better than the "New" going back and paying/giving respect to the "Old" for paving the way!
Just saw Gary in concert last night!! Still has his swag for sure!
If I had a pound for every time I've watched this. Possibly commented on it before. A band totally on it. A legendary icon and one of his most iconic songs. And a shoutout to the cameraman who does his job so perfectly without getting in the way. Really gives us the feeling of being there.
This is just the epitome of cool.
@champer slimmerthannone It's the British currency.
champer slimmerthannone LoL 😂
I just LOVE the crowd's energy!! Such a great song played by super talented musicians and Gary is a class act! I've watched this video at least 20 times or more.
Apologies if I've commented before, but that's how damned good this is...the perfect fusion of the harder NIN sound and Gary's original.
Every member of NIN in this performance was rock solid but not once tried to steal the show or take the spotlight away from Gary.
THIS is what showing respect to a legend looks like...having his beloved Polymoog on stage was the very definition of "class act". I never get tired of watching this.
Yes to me it just proves how GREAT of a band nin is. I just wish they worked on more stuff like this with exceptonal written songs and singers.
Well put!!
NIN should be Gary's backing band
They have been friends forever
Solid comment & catch
Hands down, best live version I've ever heard of this song.
Than you never saw Fear Factory bring up Gary Numan live in London for one of their Obsolete Tour nights.
@@illuddivinus3309 How about you send me a link.
Tambourine Level 1000
This song without the tambourine solo its not complete.
HooperWest , actually, IT'S OVER 9000! 😆
But, alas, no cowbell...
Trent took it from 10 to 11 #spinaltap
...and drum level
Stumbled upon this a while ago. And somehow I keep coming back to it over and over again. Maybe thats just because it utterly kicks ass! I'm drawn to the way Trent goes to town on that tambourine.
Absolutely funking awesome. Can never get enough of this!
Gary went in for a handshake, Trent went in for a hug. That. That is wholesome content right there. The man who made wish, last and terrible lie is giving someone a hug.
okay - I held the tears back until I got to this comment ❤️
To be fair to Gary - I would hesitate (but not for long!) to hug a hot sweat-soaked Trent too.
Redditor
Yeah...if Trent respects you, you've done something right!
I remember back in 1980 when this was a hit. Now NIN comes along and enhances the song the whole new level.... Pure awesome
If you want to lose your shit all over again watch Trent with Peter Murphy. So amazing.
LATE 1979 It was number 1 song in the UK IN 1979
“Animal” on drums just destroying it. Loved this song during my youth in the 80’s. This just took it a couple levels higher. Great way to start the morning.
agreed i always come back to it for a pick me up ..
Ilan Rubin is a fuckin monster on the drums.
I also thought of animal from the Muppets.
I watched Gary Numan as a kid on Saturday nite live for the first time as a kid way back in the day it was way cool. This is awesome !
Almost as good as Cedric.
It might be hard to believe, but this has been my only exposure to the Nine Inch Nails. This was an excellent performance. It is funny watching the band because everyone is playing college baseball while the drummer is playing pro football. He seems to be in his own world just dominating. Not to take away from everyone else in the band. It is just funny watching the drummer having the time of his life 🙂
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how to rock.
Love that Gary keeps doing this song. I imagine it would be very easy for him to be sick of it and never want to play it again. This was incredible.
I actually read recently that Numan says playing his old stuff makes him feel dirty but he does it for the fans.
I'm at the back of that audience somewhere. I remember singing Cars on the tube with a load of strangers on the way home.
I’m jealous man , that must have been one hell of a time 😅
That is the most banging version ever,no mistake 2 icons collaborating, showing respect to each other, acknowledging their influences..and coming up this this! yeah i'd say this kickstarted gary's resurgeance, and about f**king time!!!!
Watching the audience bounce up and down at the beginning sent chills up my spine!! Can't say enough about this performance!!
Jeeze! Numan is acting more like Reznor than Reznor!
+Justin Kalman Come on! Numan taught him thus stuff. lol
+Justin Kalman Numan has been doing that since the late 70's and it's great that he could still do it after all these years.
Diablo Roberto I agree, he isn't young man anymore......
I hope he's here to stay for a long time and that we don't lose him like David Bowie, Lemmy, Prince, etc.
shhhhhhhhhhhhh
That looked like they had a lot of fun. Really, really cool. Gary and NIN X
They are all just killing it!
Can we just acknowledge the amazing camera work here! Thank you for the experience Mr. Cameraman (AKA Rob Sheridan)! 👍🏼😉
Agreed
Stunning isn't it? It's what brings me back to watch every few weeks or so actually.
Yes, excellent! At first I admired the quality and observed the movement but when it ended I realize I was just living the moment, the camera was transparent. Great mix on this audio, too!
This is one of the best live performances ever filmed I totally agree dude.
The cameraman is Rob Sheridan who started as a fan then later on did the graphic design work, music videos for for NIN, HTDA. Recorded with his Canon 5D Mark II. (Oh yeah it’s in the description)
You know your the man when Trent Reznor plays tambourine for you!
Trent reznor
Rent Treznar
I have an EP from around 1975 that's a Gary Numan punk album. It'd probably be considered light metal now, but when I was 10...!
TANKS...I NEED TO KNOW...¡
QUERIA SABER QUE GENERO TOCABA GARY NUMAN¡
TANKS AGAIN¡
Ah the good old days of the Plan and Tubeway army :)
That drummer is a friggen MANIAC!!!!
Or you could say...an animal?
How the hell were those drums still intact at the end of this song?
Dude beat the shit out of em
He's a beast
He was literally trying to puncture that snare
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged he beat it like I beat my foster kids
ok what the fuck
The crowd! They went nuts within four cords.
Kendo 2 then didn’t move again
I've watched the opening multiple times just enjoying the way the crowd exploded in that infamous intro. Very cool.
@@smoggy1964 I was thinking the same. If I could have been there I would be going insane the whole song.
I love the look on his face, that smile at 24 seconds, how an entire arena of kids who probably weren't alive when that song came out suddenly get it and are completely stoked
Dani
Johnny Smith gothic music Hell Fuckin yeah!
Trent's band mates are getting younger all the time too while those 2 old guys are still rocking their asses off. We used to roller skate to this way back when lol
Thank you for pointing that out. I completely missed that, got to caught up with the music. That smile is amazing.
What a great performance!
Have to be Test Drive 6 fans.
I come back to this video over and over and over. It raises my blood pressure a good 10 points and I like it. From the opening lick you can feel the crowd and I want to be there so bad.
Effing amazing - that whole band is tight, and that drummer is unreal.
He's an animal
Josh Freese is so much better tho
Ila Rubin
He ok.....rather see Morgan rose
This is filthy good. Amazing sound. So tight so rock so electronic so edge.
Probably one of the best live music performances ever I reckon!
ME TOO MAN !!!!
Fucking awesome
yessss
yes!!!
B edwards word
Trent always so sweaty at his live shows. Love the energy he puts into all he does.
NEVER KNEW THIS EXISTED.. FIRST TIME SEEING IT ... DAMN THAT WAS FREAKING AWESOME
