Lyrics:
I'm in the dark, I'd like to read his mind
But I'm frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he's thinking of
To tear him away-a-ay
When I tell him that I'm falling in love
Why does he say-a-ay
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Uh-ah
I try so hard not to get upset
Because I know all the trouble I'll get
Oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
And something to fear-eh-eh
And I try so hard to keep it inside
So no one can hear
Her vocals are powerful and electrifying. Sounds and feels just as great in 2022 as it did in 1985. Just magnetic.

Currently in a situation where I'm constantly being told to shut up. Going on 25 yrs now. Shit gets old
How friggin awesome were the 80s people. This is priceless. God bless you all…
Yes!!! GEN X!!!
the mid 70's was the introduction of true "alternative" music.. The radio station CFNY-Fm 102.1 The Spirit of Radio. from Brampton Ontario was a THE radio station ; and the radio personalities, David Marsden was a huge influence to bring this 'style" of music into Canada...And you can listen to the music playlists they were playing at the time by typing CFNY-FM The Spirit of Radio Play list. If its still on line
@@Plutoman09 thank you for that piece of information. 👍

We were pretty special! The 80s will never be duplicated again! If you lived in the 80s you know the music was amazing 🤩
The last scene in this video is absolutely brilliant. Heartbreaking and brilliant.
The opera scene is so empowering! I love seeing her fight back!
Control freaks can be such a nightmare.

When it comes to music and TV, the 1970s were way better!
Best decade in the time line of this creation and universe.

"He wants me, but only part of the time, He wants me, if he can keep me in line"
Aimee Mann is one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Replace the "he" with a "she". That's how it was originally written. Too risqué at the time, though.
My favorite line: "'Cause I know--oh--the trouble I'll get." There's something about that line that gets to me. It's so--knowing.
I don’t know about all that.

So Alanis Morrisette listened to this song AND wrote her songs, yes.

This song will forever remind me of the summer 1985. Graduated high school and turned 19 that August. After my summer job was over, I could not find a job. No one would hire me. I even went to a temporary job service and even they wouldn't hire me. I finally got a job running a dish machine in a mall resteraunt that December. I just turned 57 this past August and have been retired since May of 2021. This song was on the radio everywhere in 1985 and is a reminder of how fast life passes you by. Please try to stay cognizant of blessings and enjoy your life as much as possible..... it goes by fast.
'85 was a great year
1985 was a big economic recession time period.
Summer of 85 I stayed inside and watched MTV 24/7.
@@markconnelly1806 Actually it wasn't! Reagan had won a second term the US was beginning to come out of the recession of the late 70's. I remember my parents business was booming and things were finally good for them. 85 was a great year!
bigreed43, I actually.
Just turned 43. Anyway, I couldn't agree more with your advice. I can't stress enough just to sit back and enjoy the ride. Life just speeds up the older you get!!! God bless!
I really hope the younger generation today finds this. Such a great song that takes me back.

Same im like 15 and been hearing these 80s on gta 4 since i was 8

Michael O fear not, they won't, we like them didn't as they don't give a shit about the past. Great song none the less, we know, don't ask them to be us, are you your parents? No, so why would youth today be also?
I do.
I love this old music
I just turn 60 years old on February 13th and I am so blessed that 10 years of my life was spent living Life in the eighties The greatest times ever.
🌼🌼
It was the BEST time to be alive in the entire 20th Century. Nothing even comes close. The 50's maybe but I wasn't around then.
You are one of the lucky ones Ron to have lived in the Golden Age of music buddy. I feel sorry for the youth and the music of today. Music was about the process of elimination in those days. You had to be outstanding and super talented just to get a shot. The cream always floated to the top. Seems like anyone can (and does) put out crap on the radio. Most of the bubble gum music today lacks the quality of music from the Golden Age. Count your blessings Ron. Stay blessed.
The 80s were morning in America 🥰🥰🥰

yes some songs were great!
Nearly 40 years later, still love this song! When I hear it, I have to listen to the entire song.
Me to!
OH YEAH,, I always liked the vocal n the instrumentals are excellent but I never knew exactly what the tune was about.. seeing this video,, I know EXACTLY why the song seemed so edgy,, n agree 101% the ending is SO powerful imo I HAVE to watch her (dramatically) give the guy what he hates the most: public attention,, of the HIGHLY embarrassing variety... and the hairstyle,, he says what's this, the "new image" n I'd say "yeah,, it's the "POST-YOU" image"...
Same!!
I absolutely love the opera scene. I love the irony of how you are supposed to be quiet at an opera and she had the courage to stand up and be heard, which of course is symbolic of her being in an abusive relationship and finding the courage to stand up for herself. A very powerful moment!
Yea and it was secret filmed,, him and her the only two in the audience that knew.....
Women hate white knights.
I agree, the guy is a scumbag.I'd raily for the woman.
Think you’re reading a little too much into this song/scene.
some of the theatre shows I go to even nowadays, everyone just sits and watches the orchestra and noone applauds, but I always buy a couple of single flowers before going there, and when I appreciate a song I will throw them from the balconey and stand and applaud... and more often than not I'm invited by an usher to meet with some of them at the end to go behind stage after and we get glasses of wine and get to talk to some of them :)
If only we could have the 1980's over again!
As someone who lived through the 80s, no you don't. I was a beautiful lie. What people remember of 80s was a distraction of what was really happening under the veneer of a lie we created to distract us from the truth. It took the 90s, the grunge movement to peel, painfully, the veneer off the truth. Now the naked truth is spread before the world and the truth is far more ugly than we want to admit.
Yes but only now that I’ve lived through it I’ll go back and change some things now that I know better
What is it that you miss the most?

A great time to be alive
This song is deeper and has more soul than most people realize
It is.
Two words: Aimee Mann.
Seriously because I love this song and listened to it a million times and just realized that the man in this video is my boyfriend. My boyfriend and I have been together for 10 years but he's the type of man who doesn't show much emotion at all. Like he sees emotion as weakness. When I asked him for a little bit more emotion like maybe telling me I love you before I have to tell him would be great but he acts like I'm crazy and tells me obviously he loves me. Lol it's called stop acting so tough because I know you're not but hey, people are different. I know he enjoys the I love yous and you're the best thing that's ever happened to mes he gets from me.
@@gocowboys51411 so,,,,, he doesn't tell you that he loves you but he must SHOW it in other ways. Taking care of you, taking you out, ect.......
@@roadglidered oh yes he does and I know he loves me for sure it's just nice to hear it don't you think? I know most men aren't the emotional type and I don't need it but it would be nice to hear. I'm a disabled woman with epilepsy which I developed a few years into our relationship and he has been here to take care of me and do everything I need him to do. I just struggle with my emotions having to depend on him as well as my father to take me to work and home and to go grab a coffee if I want one... I always feel like neither of them want to do any of that for me and it's almost like he feels bad for me that's why he stays. In reality I know he wouldn't stay if he didn't want to be here because he's not dependent like me but it gets in my head sometimes when I don't get smiles and I love yous out of the blue because I know he's not thinking about it or he would be happy to say it especially with my low self-esteem... I guess I'm just too needy but I'd be a lot less stressed knowing that my boyfriend is thinking of me and how much he loves me... He just doesn't think about loving me as much as I think about him not loving me.... If that makes sense 😂
Seems like yesterday I was listening to this song at age 19. Now I'm 58 and realize how fast life is.

after 30 it flies by christmas again, already .
The theater scene is epic. The raw emotion portrayed magnificently. Captures the song perfectly.
Ohhh gave me chills This lady could sang…I felt her emotions
Yeah. Goosebumps completely. Lyrically brilliant and the melody is soaring when it hits that chorus. Well crafted art.
Yeah, that scene was what I remember most about the video.
In fact, it's kind of funny the things you remember years later. I'll never forget the sight of the tuxedoed guy sitting immediately in front of Aimee Mann. He was just out for a night at the opera and he gets a ringside seat to this drama.
Yes, I always get shivers, terrific scene! Kind of rude to whoever was supposed to be performing though. But I like how everyone is at first like "wtf" and "come on lady, we're trying to watch fucking Aida or something" but then start turning as she ramps it up and upstages those sad sacks they paid good money to see. Even beard man scarf man was enraptured at the end!
This song was so Deep, Brilliant in the 80's. Iconic
Coming up close another great Til Tuesday song
The man in the video had one job and that was to make people hate him and he nailed it.
totally agree
Sooo, he buys her ear rings which she doesn't appreciated, doesn't like it when she stays out with a group of guys late and doesn't tell him, he takes her to out all the time, she gets funky haircuts without even telling him, doesn't put out enough or at all. No wonder he is a dick.
Yes he did!
Cool guy
Hush hush keep it down

Perversely those that want to control You are attracted to.
Stop going after the bad boy Chads. Find a nice guy. Problem is the most woman find a nice guy as weak and predictable. Many of you say u want a nice guy. Yet u are attracted the bad boy. He is unpredictable and a challenge. Nice guys are not. I once had a woman who said that she liked that I was honest and straight forward. Then went on and said you need to be more mysterious. Another said you are genuinely a nice guy. She said she didnt know how to handle me. I said dont worry about trying to control and handle me. Just go with the flow. Glad u got out of ur bad relationship. Just learn from your mistake and dont get into a relationship like that again. Dont be like my neighbor. She is very attractive. 40 year old single mother now. Within a week of moving in to other side of duplex from me. Her bad boy tattooed bf tried to strangle her to death. Police had to kick down the door. But hey lets defund police right? Lucky police there. Cause I would have had to put the loser out of his misery. SO he gets arrested. She takes him back. Then police here over and over again. Ultimately she used a knife on him. She pounded on my door covered in blood. Turns out this guy served 6 to 12 yrs in jail for trying to stab 2 ppl to death. When i found this out. I barricaded my doors and made sure i had my berretta with me at all times. Shotgun loaded too. So he was to serve min of 2 yrs for trying to strangle her. He gets a yr. Then serves 2 months. Back out. 2 more crimes. In and out of jail. I hear her thru wall talking to him on speaker phn. SHe talks super loud. She says she loves him. Also is seeing other bad boy types. SMH!!! This is the typical woman who would look past a nice sweet guy like me, esp in her 20s. She is the one who kicks us in the balls. As of now. She has spoken to me perhaps 2 or 3 times in past year. She doesnt give me the time of day. She wouldnt know a good guy if she landed next to one. Dont be this woman!!!!!
Only this song is not about an abusive relationship.. its about a lesbian relationship where one of them is bi and has a boyfriend... from the perspective of the lesbian. The words and theme of the song were changed at the record company's request..

I always thought this song was a banger but now that I’m older I get the meaning of the song. Surprisingly deep. One of my all time favorites ever
Exactly, surprisingly deep for young people to have wrote this song.
@@garyhelms1889 why? It's just about relationships. Its not an exposition on the nature of existence or something.
@FireOfRenewal I was referring to the melody. Nothing to do with the words of the song.
I was 9 years old when this song came out liked it but didn’t understand it. But fast forward to 46 now, after being married to a narcissistic man for 3 years and now divorced I totally understand it. Especially the part she says “he wants me if he can keep me in line” #boybye 😒
Also that it was about a female. They made her change the lyrics from her to him/he. So sad that they took that away from her.
This was the song of my youth. The story of struggling against controlling men who play with you like a cat with a mouse.
The good ol' days when music videos had meaningful stories to go with them. I miss those days. Would do almost anything to do back.

Aimee Mann is a genius. This song is one of the greatest songs of the '80's. Also: Rest in Peace, Cully Holland -- gone far too soon.
@Michael Foley. I agree wholeheartedly. I was ridiculously fortunate to experience Ms. Mann, “back in the day”, meaning 1985/1986+. One night, as I was leaving Providence College, Aimee Mann was singing her heart out on this brilliant song of hers. I had seen her in Cambridge and Somerville, MA. However, walking across campus alone with my thoughts, then unexpectedly experiencing her power and magic, was a great moment in my life.
Living in North Falmouth, Cape Cod, circa 1986,Voices Carry was the soundtrack of being carefree and 20 years old.
Long live Aimee Mann.

One thing about the 80's we all still had hope.
Because we were younger and politics were not everywhere like they are now.

Unlike hope and change
Up until the end of the cold war the popular culture encouraged more of a sense of possibility. Then there was supposed to be a "peace dividend" and instead the entertainment/propaganda media started pushing cynicism about life and indifference to death as they ramped up the war "on terrorism" that was started instead, and more recently when technology reached a point where people were easier to track and kill and less necessary to industry, the entertainment/propaganda media started pushing nihilism and hopelessness. Propaganda is powerful, and a lot of decisive things hadn't played out yet back then. It was possible to envision 2015 being more like "Back To The Future II", and the time after it more like a higher-tech sort-of-like-the-80s and less like a slide closer to human extinction (or the extinction of non-sociopathic non-genetically-engineered actually-human humans)...
The lyrics are fantastic. If you've ever been in a relationship with an abusive man, it is just like this. Silencing your voice, erasing who you are.
ScattySafari I'm glad i got out of mine in 2010 after 9 years of abuse
Wow, Ladies (I'm a guy), please don't stay in those relationships. You're beautiful, talented, intelligent and much better than that. You deserve and have earned equality at a bare minimum. But, you've earned so much more than that. I don't know much about Amee Mann's past, but I understand this song was written as a result of a domineering relationship that she got out of. Good for her, and for all you that have made the choice. For those of you that haven't, you need to follow through on the choice to have a better life.

I see some nasty comments about the male lead in the video.
His name was Cully Holland. He was an actor who had a very short career, unfortunately. The video was made in 1985. Six years later, Mr Holland died from complications due to the AIDS virus. I think that better commentary about this man is probably in order.
Yes, his character was a horrible person. The fact that Mr Holland made the character so realistic is a testament to his skill as an actor.
May God rest his soul.
Having a thick skin and realistic attitude includes the realization that at any given moment, 70-90% of people in a specific issue are clueless morons, total idiots who speak from empty minds instead of thinking with empathy and researched knowledge LoL.
Doesn't mean the same people are idiots in all things or don't eventually mature or become more enlightened as time goes on. After all life and experience is a process, not a stand alone static thing.
Also some people don't like other people and it is subjective so there is that. The important thing is don't let others (thick skin) delegate your life and attitude, only you.
This was a good mini movie and the guy helped make it playing his character's role so well (cold and demeaning, I also felt a brutal undertone of violence just under the surface in his portrayal) that it made this mini movie pogniant and is remembered.
Kevin Joseph Gallery given name (actually a better stage name ironically than the one he used IMO), passed at 33 from AIDS.

Born in the early 60's and heard this song as a young man so many times through the 80's and beyond but tonight after randomly watching Kate Hudson and then here I LISTENED for the first time. Very powerful and way way ahead of its time with respect to abusive dysfunctional relationships. We take such statements now as common but 40 years ago this was revolutionary. Such a strong statement for her. Fantastic.
This is the saddest song I've ever heard. She loves a man who tears her down, plays with her emotions and doesn't give her the love she wants in return. I've never knew what the lyrics meant until now. Awesome song....
She's standing up to say she's done with him. It's a moment of bravery, not sadness.
She was talking about the drummer
I’ve lived this
The original lyrics are sung from a girl to another girl. It was changed by there label to make it more tolerable to the mainstream. Replace all the he with she and you'll find it's a little more complicated than what you hear in the finished version.
Ian Johnson I had no idea! Wow! That does change the whole thing!
The guy playing the character of her abusive partner, said that after the video hit the airwaves, complete strangers would come up to him and would tell him how awful he was, as if he were her real boyfriend. He took it as a compliment. I'm glad. :)
The same was true for the actress who played Mrs. Olsen on Little House on the Prairie.
@@toober4013 Wow!! That's scary good acting
It's gotten pretty bad for actors playing villains, William Atherton received death threats and even was attacked by people because of his character in Ghostbusters. Sgt. Slaughter received mail bombs for his character as an Iraqi sympathizer in the early 90s WWF. Actress Leah Pipes was constantly bullied online and received death threats because fans of Vampire Diaries and The Originals wanted the character Klaus to end up with the character Caroline Forbes, they threatened her merely for being a love interest. That's cool that he took it as a compliment, however lots of celebrities get it really bad
And he was right. Now that's Talent. To make people hate a Character. It's sad that he's gone.

I was a very young child when this song came out but she evoked so many amazing sentiments, I could tell some of what she was singing, an anthem and these 80s songs truly influenced my anthemic affinity for songs. No one says this but she is singing about a timeless topic isnt she? Women are interesting people too! She is sharing how she wont be oppressed even if she feels scared. That is how I feel when I hear this. Thank you Aimee for this amazing song.
Gen Xr' here! There are songs like this one that just bring back a flood of memories from an entire decade! I was in the 8th grade and I remember seeing this video on Night Tracks and being utterly fascinated by the storyline and not entirely understanding it nor the song too well. I did know that he was trying to make her something she wasn't tho. Now, I see both as very cinematic and so perfect! Music and music videos were such an escape for us "latchkey kids" because we had so many adult responsibilities from a very young age! That said, we also have so many amazing pop culture moments to look back on now. The 80's were truly magical! Our very own "wonder years"!

Isn't it ironic how the clarity of which direction we should have gone is so clear now? The emotions that an old song can bring out and all the details I hadn't thought about sit front and center. What an amazing process that is and so powerful. Probably has many similarities to being hypnotized!
