Just caught my first 3 jerkbait fish yesterday. Biggin went 3lb 5oz (4 lbs lol). After watching your video this morning, I learned I was working the bait too fast. Thanks for the info
I was 5'11@3/4 once last time at the docs I shrunk to 5'10 but my 9.5 foot now requires a size 11 so I guess it evens out aye..? Enjoy your vid. Still working on jerkbaiting with your help I might just figure it out thanks
Me and my buddy caught our first smallies on tip-ups yesterday. Lol. Hard water up here in NH. Great video. Jerk bait is one of the techniques I am planning on really dialing in this spring.
I've been in a 2 month slump. Fishing everyday with no luck. Started watching your videos last week and have some major improvements that led to some big fish. Wish I could post the pictures here. Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom in such a easy to understand way. You're explanations are much easier to implement than 90% of the other guys on UA-cam. Also you're ideas have proven to be more effective. you are not just a pro fisherman, but a pro trainer as well. I can tell you love what you do. That's awesome!
Great video as always. I love the fact that you mentioned that one should get a rod length that does not hit the water based on one's height. This takes the myth out of that every rod should be 7' or more. Every rod had a purpose and must fit the angler.
Never heard that one myself but I'm not surprised, this sport is full of myths that someone somewhere asserted and others picked up on and ran with it. I use my jerkbait setup for walking baits as well- since it's the same downward rod twitch and you're trying once again to avoid hitting the water- plus they both use treble hooks so- imo the same rod works for both really well. I do like a moderate/fast action over a fast action though- you need a fast tip to work the bait crisply but, you need a moderate parabolic bend to land a treble hooked fish- so the mod/fast just seems like the perfect compromise. The same thing can be said about walking baits- you want a fast tip to making walking it easier but a moderate bend to make sure you land the fish once you hook them.
I think a lot of that comes from old timers who fished with broom sticks. You have to remember until the late 80’s early 90’ most rods had incredibly stiff tips. Because of that they Compensated by using a longer, lighter rod paired with monofilament to create more or less flex giving you the desired action. You can’t forget how much fishing has evolved over the last 30 years. I’ve fished tournaments with some old timers who won’t use anything shorter then 7” because that’s what they are accustomed too, and they pass down that dated advice to the younger guys trying to learn the sport. Personally I have no idea why, I’m 6”2 and anything over 7” adds so much more frustration and fatigue when fishing a jerk bait, especially fishing it fast.
Man your videos and attitude are always awesome and even though you're such a awesome accomplished fisherman you're so down to earth and just awesome to watch. Tight lines man
Great and informative video. I have followed your career for years and actually met you at the BPS in Clarksville. I was impressed at how much you attened to your fans. A gentleman asked you a question about a rod and you actually took him over to the rods and showed him what you were explaining.
Mr. Evers thank you for your videos and dedication on sharing your content. Down here in Brazil we're in Summer, and I do fish jerk baits year around...most of our fishing here is finesse, but these baits deliver! Keep it up!
Great explanation of everything on your videos. I can walk away from my computer and just listen to the audio and still understand everything you are talking about without watching and not miss anything.
Thanks so much for this video. I have tried jerkbait fishing and havent been successful at all. Now I know to change rod length and line size. This is gonna make a HUGE difference.
First fish of the year was a smallmouth on 3in pirboss and thank you for the tips with fishing the jerk bait and gear, really helps out with trying to step up my jerk bait fishing
My first bass that I have caught in 2021 was ice fishing with a little tiny jig with a minnow. I love jerkbaits in the early season, I also use it as a bed fishing bait and do well with that to.
Very well said E , the biggest mistake I see with people fishing jerk baits in the winter is fishing to fast!! I think once you get a few bites dead sticking, it becomes much easier to do. Great video E E , looking forward to more!! Good Luck Buddy!!
I have never caught one on a jerkbait, mostly because I'm too quick to give up on it. But this year I'm gonna have at least one day I go out and just throw it the whole day. I wanna hear your thinking on the braid backing. I've heard some folks say use braid and others say use whatever you have like what's left over of old spools, mostly I use some old mono or flouro that there isn't enough of to fish with.
hey mate great video! im kind of curious and i cant seem to find much information on it, but what has been your experience using these jerkbaits at night?
Thank you for this video. Two questions. 1, you tie directly which looked like a san diego jam knot, any thoughts on using swivel snap? And 2, I use 6# or 10# and I'm getting backlashes, Why? I was thimking about buying a BFS reel. Otherwise I will continue with yhe spinning rod.
Ok Now I'm very jealous...lol I thought yeah Oklahoma Kid has a huge Man Cave...didn't know about your own pond. I've only tried using a jerk bait set up once a few years ago. I kept getting hit but no takers. I was using the Blue Pearl by Livingston.
Great video as always. I have always used a spinning rod for jerk baits. Seems like most pros used to as well. Is there an advantage to a bait caster for them?
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I was doing completely wrong and almost to give up with the jerk baits. My first bass 2021 was a beautiful 4 pounder on a worm :) in my back yard.
@TT Game reviews I thought braids was smaller diameter than most mono. Also seems it's a little lighter the monofilament. Even though both lines absorb a little water, braids seem to be more dimensionally more stable. So I wonder if maybe braids keeps the spool a little lighter and thereby reducing overruns? Really looking for a experienced answer. Thanks Guy
edwin’s reason (discussed in a previous video) for braid backing over mono is that braid is lighter in weight. the lighter the line on the spool, the lighter the spool is, which makes the spool spin faster and easier= longer cast
The mod/fast action- I know this one said fast but it looked more mod/fast to me- is important when jerkbait fishing I think- a good jerk bait rod is difficult to find. It needs a fast enough tip to work the bait crisply- but a moderate enough bend to land a bass on tiny treble hooks. If you're like me and you buy your rods on line- meaning you can't really handle them or judge the action or anything until you get them in hand- finding the right rod can get tricky. For instance ppl told me when I first started frog fishing to get a heavy, fast action rod- so I bought an Abu Garcia Vengeance- which turned out to be a pitching stick that's like fishing with a stick of pulpwood- no tip whatsoever. I couldn't walk a frog on it to save my life without any tip- so I bought a heavy action Powell Endurance- but it's no more substantial than my medium heavy rods form other makers. It's a great rod, don't get me wrong but- it's no frogging rod. It's only rated up to an ounce, I have medium heavy rods that are rated that high. I need a good, heavy rod with a nice responsive tip. If I could put the tip of the Powell onto the back bone of the Abu Garcia- now that's a froggin rod.
Hey Edwin. Been very interested in seeing the different thought process for jerk bait rods. I know some use casting reel/rod but others like Randy Blaukat and David Dudley swear you should only use a spinning setup. I guess i just need to experiment with both and see what works best for me?
Dude just going to a 6'8 from a 6'10 made a world of difference in working the bait over the course of the day. No more smacking the water or the trolling motor.
hey i rerally need your help so I am on a budjet and I have a 7 foot medium fast action rod and I am going to buy an 8:1:1 ratio for jerkbaits and I wanted to combine this with my topwater rod so would a 7 foot medium fast action be good for jerkbaits and poppers? paired with an 8:1:1 gear ratio?
I used to have that problem too, but found it was because I was wrapping the line around the rod with too much tension in it before I put them in sock and into the locker. Now I make sure there is a good little sag in the line before I wrap it a couple of turns, and so far no more broken lines.
My jerkbait setup is the best in the world.I use a 6 ft rod ,spinning reel 6 lb line a small owner jerkbait wrapped in Mylar with a feather tail. The key to fishing a jerkbait is to hold the rod real loose and throw slack, don’t pull the bait.
Jerk Bait fishing..... jerk on one end waiting for a jerk on the other...😂... A jerk bait is a go to for me when its tough lots of confidence in them....
Iam 5ft 11 3/4 I. tell people I am 6ft I don't jerk a minnow type I just reel it down and let I float up .I use a 6ft 8in spinning rod extra extra heavy it's a St. Croix rod Mojo Bass rod not sure of the action mostly I use a Rapala I am 63 of age now but when I was younger in tackle shop the owner was In hls 60's and he showed me how to use a Rapala I've been using one ever since.!!!!!!
What was your FIRST BASS of 2021 caught on?? Let me know! 👇
Chatter bait
Will check back in to the comment section after I catch one 😂 great information man!

Jerkbait! I have dedicated the last 3 months to learning JB fishing and caught more Largies and Peacock then in the yr and a half I have been fishing.

You teach as well as u fish, the best I have ever been explained to about jerk baits. Thank you for your teachings.
Absolutely love the fact that I came across your channel Edwin. I have learned so much from your techniques and your conversation.
Help is an understatement for my fishing game.
Great explanation of everything on your videos. I can walk away from my computer and just listen to the audio and still understand everything you are talking about without watching and not miss anything.
Great Video EE. Can you tell us what line to line knot you tied in under 5 secs? From 2:34-2:39!
Thanks so much for this video. I have tried jerkbait fishing and havent been successful at all. Now I know to change rod length and line size. This is gonna make a HUGE difference.
Great to hear from a pro so down to earth. Keep the great videos coming.
Sorry if I'm being a pain, but what line diameter are you going for? A lot of different brands with different diameters for line. Thanks!
This is great stuff especially for cold water fishing. However, however as the water warms in the spring what changes do you in your retrieve?
Good tips..I believe after watching this I'm probably moving my bait more than I should..will definitely pay more attention
I sure do enjoy your videos, and all of the knowledge that you have to share. Thank you.
Have you ever added scent to your bait? would it help or a waste of time.
First fish of the year was a smallmouth on 3in pirboss and thank you for the tips with fishing the jerk bait and gear, really helps out with trying to step up my jerk bait fishing
I’m doing it all wrong. Safe travel this year . Good luck. We’re Rooting for you

Thank you,I will try try again thanks great tips
I use a 6’6” composite rod for jerk bait fishing. Love it.
Or if you're fishing off of the front of a tracker, you can use a 7'6"!
As always, great tips on jerkbait fishing. One question, I know you use 8-10 pound test but what brand of line… Im assuming some sort of BPS line.
Thanks as always for the great information. Always helps with the little details.
Great tips! Caught my first in 2021 on a drop shot in the local pond.

Great video. Good to know about the line weight and the way it drops
Great glad it was helpful. Thank for watching!
Edwin, what's your take on using braid backing on your casting reels? Thanks Guy

Great content. Why braid backing not monofilament?
Thanks

You called the knot a cinch knot. Does it have a particular name? I need to change my knot up for lighter line.
Thank you great way to explain this whole setup and showing it on the waer

is it best to fish smaller bodies of water in winter time or larger bodies of water
One of my favorite baits to use thanks for the tips.

I was thinking same thing. Great question.
Had your new boat out and broken in ?
What kind of spooling station do you have.
Thank you for the helpful tips on using a jerk bait. I will have to put it to use. You are the best Edwin.
could you do a video on tying that knot . First Bass this year was my PB 6 1/2 lb on mini chatterbait with zman diesel minnow trailer
Can you make a video on all the gear ratios and the different lures for them and rods, because you do a great job explaining
Great content as always!!
Great lesson as always
Love your fishing tips
Maybe do a show on how you build and put out cover (brush piles)or other material that is effective that is not common knowledge!!
Ain't got non yet. Need to remedy that believe I can do it.Jerk bait time thanks for video.
Going tomorrow to Dripping Springs Lake Oklahoma. I hope i get to see you on Eucha soon we will have to have a competition lol
Great video as always great information.
🔥I have been fishing in my lake for 3 weeks with no fish and I have fished crankbait jerkbait and spinner bait
Any suggestions
@TT Game reviews ok thank you
Dude just going to a 6'8 from a 6'10 made a world of difference in working the bait over the course of the day. No more smacking the water or the trolling motor.
Does Lews make those Johnny Morris reels.??
What color do you throw in Florida tannic water?
Keep up the work man love the videos all the way from N.c 💯 send me some baits lol
Thanks for watching Eric!
Great video Edwin
I need all the help I can get 😩 and this info was needed. Thanks 🙏🏻.
Glad I could help Dan. Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks brother!
Best fluorocarbon line? I have problems with line memory lol
I live in Minnesota does this work when we don’t have shad much in our lakes? More shiners And suckers for bait fish.
yes just get a good color, try the ghost morning dawn color by duo realis
or pro blue by kvd j300
I wish they still made the xcalibur EE4 jerkbaits
Keep bringing the good info! Trying to get to that pro level! 👍
Nice tip about the rod...
Great info. Thanks
You bet Dennis thank for watching
Thanks-- Good info.
Awesome video
hey i rerally need your help so I am on a budjet and I have a 7 foot medium fast action rod and I am going to buy an 8:1:1 ratio for jerkbaits and I wanted to combine this with my topwater rod so would a 7 foot medium fast action be good for jerkbaits and poppers? paired with an 8:1:1 gear ratio?
Yes that will be perfect
Tell me what's so great about florocarbon? I have tried to use it only to find it has broken in the rod box, even with a rod sock on the rod.
I used to have that problem too, but found it was because I was wrapping the line around the rod with too much tension in it before I put them in sock and into the locker. Now I make sure there is a good little sag in the line before I wrap it a couple of turns, and so far no more broken lines.
@@nursenick06 thanks for the info. I may try that.
Informative
Edwin will you please give me all the information you can to help me fish for bass in the winter
You have to put 5lb of tension on your line when you spool.
What's at the end of your rods
Great video, need to change some reels to 10# FC.
Oh, it's calm! LOL
need to do a hybird fishing video on birch
My jerkbait setup is the best in the world.I use a 6 ft rod ,spinning reel 6 lb line a small owner jerkbait wrapped in Mylar with a feather tail. The key to fishing a jerkbait is to hold the rod real loose and throw slack, don’t pull the bait.
This is 1 technique that haunts me still.
Jerk Bait fishing..... jerk on one end waiting for a jerk on the other...😂... A jerk bait is a go to for me when its tough lots of confidence in them....

how do you know what deep of jerkbait to use, by finding fish on graph first, or just fish main lake points and cover lots of water
I fish jerkbaits with a 6ft medium ugly stick, works fine for me lol
First bass of 2021 caught on underpin and 3.75 inch keitech. Happy New Years!

Good job! 🎉
Hahahaha, mine tells me I am 5'9" when I am really 5'10"...
When people keep asking me y I don’t use a 7ft rod I’m send them this video lol I’m 6ft also but my driver license says I’m lying.
It is 6 feet 9 not 6 foot 9
