I'm no tournament chaser just casual/addicted variety fisherman over 40yrs. I find that doing a few slow and then a few fast retrieves (alternating every 3 casts maybe) gets more fish. The last fish I had in 2 weeks were a 3lb pike, 2+ lb rainbow and 2 20lb+ salmon. The changing hooks is great advice as the last salmon destroyed mine. All on jerkbaits and all hit when verying speed from 1 cast to the next or pausing mid retreive. Great video - thanks!
Great presentation, outstanding info. AWESOME HACK! that you shared as well. You opened by saying that the Jerkbait was not just a cold water lure, but all year long. If I might add please, that after doing this for five or six decades I've discovered that some jerkbaits are indeed cold water specialists while other are best for warmer water. Rapala Shadow Rap is a great cold water jerkbait while it's brother the Shadow Rap "SHAD" is unbelievably just as great in the summer time. But in my opinion, nothing beats a Vision 110 in the winter time. Try a Jackall Rerange in late spring all the way through til fall. I'm not trying to be a "know it all" just being doing this since it was called "Crispin'" back in the 1970's down in the Ozarks. SERIOUSLY, THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF YOUR BEST VIDEOS!!! Thank you
Sir if you don’t mind me asking. What color of that jackall rerange would you suggest for summer time down in the ozarks. I’m just starting to look at jerkbaits and learn them.
@@joeschranz4525 My two favorite Jackall Rerange patterns are the RT Holo Minnow and the HL Hasu. These two have a lot of flash when they roll side to side as you snap them in that Jerkbait snap-snap-pause retrieve. Good fishing

@@MaineStreamFishing funny story about cold water. I bought a boat when I came back from my deployment in Afghanistan. It was a used boat and aluminum so I could learn how to be a boater. In April the ice was off and me and my buddy wanted to go fishing. The air temperature was about 50 to 55 with the water temp in the mid 40s. As we are going out to the main lake my boat starts filling with water.... guess who as a new boater forget to put the plug in lol. We got to around 4 feet and I jumped out because neither motor would start and I walked my boat back onto the trailer
Megabass 110 are also affected but water temp. Those Berkley hook will give them a very slow sink rate in warmer water temp but will make them sink too fast in cold water temps.
Your darn right downsizing can make a huge difference. There's times when I can't get a bite on a Vision 110, but an X-80 or an X-Nanahan is the business! That X-Nanahan is great, they are just very scarce since they're so new. But man are they catching fish right now as the bass are starting to push those smaller sized minnow schools up in the backs of bays and creeks. That small size is awesome. And like you say a silent Jerkbait is great when they're skittish...I keep alot of silent jerkbaits in my tackle, in all the same key colors. If I get followers that won't commit, that silent goes. They suck to cast, but catch fish well! on

Hello Ty looking to pick up the smithwick. I see you modified a elite 8 .would the lighter 3/8oz pro rouge work just as well? The elite 8 is 1/2oz and dives a little deeper
Tried throwing a jerkbait late fall going into winter this year. I’ve been getting a lot of what feels like the fish are slapping the jerkbait but no hookups. Should I go smaller for the jerkbait or try a silent ?
Cold front Florida bass fishing try using the floating model modify with just enough weight to keep it from floating on top. Super long pauses , they dont want it on top.
I caught 4 largemouth and a steelhead this morning (in 45 minutes) on the Smithwicks Rouge of that exact color. But I keep the original color. My best jerkbait. I just do a straight retrieve.
When I use a spinning rod Jerkbait I will use a full spook of fluorocarbon. You can probably use braid to lesser but I just like the feel of straight fluoro
I had the absolute best smalljaw day of my life last fall with a Lucky Craft NW Amigo 5/16 oz jerkbait. Was fishing a local river bridge at a transition point. Caught three 20"s that morning and 8 total. 7 of them over 18".
He says in the video that jerking your rod tip upwards make the bait come up but I found it's a complete opposite. If you jerk your ride up towards a couple times it seems like the lip on the bait catches the water and makes him go down sharply. This was confirmed with livescope. To me it's the same thing as a reeling it... if your just pulling it upwards fairly quick the bait is going to dive
I wonder if smith wick is aware of that hack.. I have a box full and will give it a shot. Thank you for sharing. Now the negative. I don’t understand why I should have you change the hooks out on a $20 jerk bait. Nothing you did of course.. just venting. Enjoying the channel! Keep up the great work!
Do u have any tips for fishing jerkbaits from the bank in river current? I fish jerkbaits a lot from the banks of the ca delta since they work better than anything else I throw and catch all different types of bass so I always have one with me. Anyways, the delta current can get pretty gnarly and makes it difficult to get depth even with lighter line. Any tips for speed or which way or direction is better to cast?
I was screwing around and caught a decent bass on a 4.6 ultralight casting rod with a Rapala T7 jerk last weekend. Wasn't expecting it. But I landed it

good information I've caught bass in having confidence in the bait I used * I had jerk baits for years but never had confidence in them I'm now just starting to use them this fall
My Vision 110 silent is missing a lot of paint. I use it more than the BBed ones. Saw on another video the host says he "moves" the bait a few inches once in a while. This seems wrong as most guys will tell you to twitch on slack line so it wont move and, that the bass will quickly figure out the bait isn't real. Do you have any thoughts on "moving" a jerk bait during retrieval?
Awesome bass fishing that was 🔥 awesome video I know it takes a lot of effort too make videos every couple days as a kid I find it hard been doing it for 2 years now any way I just love this video I have too say it is one of your best
