    After all the hi-tech., hi-ticket videos on how to do plastic repairs using excessive quantities of expensive materials and exotic tools here is a true do-it-yourself home remedy to crucial needed repairs. I anticipate getting my chain saw oil reservoir re-sealed without having to take it to a shop or sending the part back to the manufacturer for an exchange. I am glad I came here.

    Hey! I had a bad episode when pouring Expoy on my Countertop. I guess I waited to long and the Epoxy started to cure in the bucket before pouring. Searched the internet for help, but there wasn't much...
    I rented a heat gun a couple of days later, and was able to lift, then roll the whole thing off (3.5' x 6') in a couple of hours.
    Heat. You have got to love it!
    I'm going to try and fix my son's expensive and now cracked Headphones! Thanks for expanding my vision.

    Just use a zip lock tie for the donor plastic, a bag of small ones come in all colors.

    • @disappointedguy
      @disappointedguy 2 роки тому

      I know its an old comment for any new reader, don't do this. The lid to be repaired on the video was HDPE plastic and zip ties are Nylon plastic. They will not stick together, they have different melting points so when one it is at its optimal temp to be welded, the other may be burning. Always remember that is better to have the same kind of plastic than the same color (and diferent plastic).

    I appreciate the fact that this was a demonstration for the basis theory of plastic welding. However, I think I would have put a layer of clear plastic wrap on the bottom and sealed it on with a heat gun and bondic on top for support. I learned that the tip you are using seems better suited than the tip I currently have. Time to machine out a better tip. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for posting this video. It has been helpful in fixing my Epson printer loading tray. The pin socket broke in half, and not evenly, of course. So I cut the crooked pieces to make them flat and using a soldering iron, began melting a piece of a ball point pen that I cut to fit the remaining space. This was not going well as the tiny piece of the pen would not stay in place. So I took another suggestion from a comment and using a piece of trim cord from a weed eater, I melted lots of extra plastic to the remaining piece of socket and then had more of a surface to attach the piece of the pen. After getting a fairly secure join, I applied lots more of the trim cord. After waiting for a while for the piece to set, It is now installed on the printer.
    Time will tell if this is a permanent fix. Thanks again.

    cool. I hope you've learned a bit more over the last 3 years.
    I've been doing this since about 2002. This is the first instructions I have looked at though. I learned quickly that you need variable temperature so you don't burn the plastic as they vary in melting point. One cheap way to do this is to go to the hardware store and get a wall socket, a wall mount dimmer switch, a double wide outlet box to hold them and a power chord. This cost me about $10-$12 and you have a dimmer switch for other things now. (fuck ya!)
    Also, penetration is key.
    (uhhh...huh huh huh ...I said penetration.)

    Interesting...but I recommend against getting acting and public speaking tips from William Shatner. If you have to, check out using a teleprompter app for your phone or tablet. You may think you can do it extemporaneously, but that's not easy to do without sounding like Shatner giving a Kirk speech when he's forgotten his lines.

    For plastic welding, the best choice for most things is to use Bondic, the plastic welder that cures with UV light and doesn't require all this fuss.

    • @redjack2629
      @redjack2629 8 років тому

      quickest, yes. Best, not even remotely. On top of that, Bondic doesn't work terribly well on oily plastics like various PVC products, and it wouldn't surprise me if it worked poorly on hydroscopics as well.

  • @allenkinchen

    This is fantastic and so funny . you did a good job .. I have a Kayak that I want to install a sail but need the base boom support , or commonly called the main mast support to be strong . Have not found any glue to stay secure , even Polypropylene Glue or caulking does not work good . Even Gorilla glue is a joke . Getting glues to stick to Polyethylene is extremely difficult .. So I have several types of soldering Irons and guns and will give this a try .. I have had great success with Milk jug containers as a donor material .. I was hoping to find a perfect match for the Kayak color but this is impossible . The mast support for the sail must be strong to endure hard stresses . tiny bits of glue is not enough .. It must be physically big and very strong ..

    • @clattenstrait7174
      @clattenstrait7174 9 років тому

      After fixing the crack, you should re-enforce that section of pipe by wrapping with nylon string, and then brushing plastic cement over the string. This creates a very strong bond around the damaged area.

  • @tarstarkusz
    @tarstarkusz 10 років тому +1

    Just be careful with melted plastic, it will stick to you and cause burns. Also, there many kinds of plastics and this technique will not work with many if not most of them. This lid has basically no structural use and so it's just a matter of sealing it, but if it was any kind of structure, it wouldn't hold.

    • @TechSupport100
      @TechSupport100 9 років тому

      Not true, actually. Watch the video by sixtyfiveford who uses exactly the same technique to fix the cover of a chain saw. Watch ALL THE WAY TO THE END, where he flexes the piece after he's fixed it.

    •  9 років тому

      This technique actually works great on polyethylene plastic, that is HDPE, MDPE and LDPE (the latter used in this demonstration). And being able to weld this group of plastics is most important, because most glues won't stick to polyethylene.
      With other types of plastics I have had very mixed results. PET, PP and PVC are particularly terrible, they just burn and release noxious fumes.

    Sometimes I take my scrodum and heat them up to about 105d and just start shootin' off loads jizzmum all over everything whether it needs it or not. If that doesn't work, I'll treat my dog's food with a little Siracha and standby with my plastic welding projects. That stuff that blasts out of there at "above room temperature" (approximately) can either make mess or, make a mend. Keep welding plastic shit out there, kids.
