I really don't have an issue that there is no GPU integration yet in this version. I rather that Solid Angle does it right unlike some of its competitors who rushed it to market. The quality, robustness and ease of use of Arnold is what I expect from when GPU comes around and I think they will deliver. This is a great release.
Since Arnold doesn't use c4d noises, I found a workaround. I was using layered noises in the displacement channel in a C4D material. What I did was copy the displacement shader into the color channel of a new material and applied it to the same object (with unwrapped uvs). I baked the object which created a single texture image file to use in Arnold displacement. It worked perfectly with the same displacement values set in the Arnold parameters tag for displacement and subdivision.
Dang... I wish I could have caught this live... lot's of great tips and information. And a sphere pooping turd machine too. And totally looking forward to the arnold material library when you finally have the time to recreate and distribute it!
I'm currently running an AMD Threadripper 1950x - 16 cores @ 4ghz, it's really good for Arnold right now as a cpu based renderer. Arnold definitely gives a real sense of quality to the renders, I've yet to mess with volumes & depth of field, but shadows and refraction/reflections are great. It's system of sampling and ray counts is very simple and intuitive to control quality. My only disappointment so far is caustics is pretty poor which I was expecting a lot better out of an unbiased renderer.
hey there thanks for all the wonderful tutorials. I have a question that I hope you'll be able to help me out with. at 7:41 you drag and drop the color from the Arnold Sky to the HDRI Link tag, I can't do that ! :D (i'm using C4d R19 Studio, HDRI Link 1.05 and Arnold 5.0.1.3) would appreciate it if you can help me out
Chad please help! With this new Arnold version I can´t connect any Surface to a layer_color. can´t see the wire or effect. Is it a bug? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
Thanks so much for your awesome tutorial ! I have a question that when i connect the standard to bump I can`t find the shader. It showed " bump map , bump height , shader" before, it show "bump map , bump height , normal' Could you please tell me how to solve this problem. I , your fan from China, am so sorry for my poor English,
Chad, Would it be possible to create a volumetric light so the actual volumetric effect is in the light source rather than just a light illuminating a volume in front of it? In other words would it be possible to recreate the volumetric lights actually found in C4D?
I guess what I meant was can you drop a cloudy or turbulence texture effect into the light source to create a fake volumetric light rather than dropping a volume into the atmosphere and back illuminating it with a light ? C4d has its own volumetric lights which I use all the time but Arnold seems to stick with real world situations .
Dear Chad, firstly thanks for great tuorial but I have a little request from you if possible. I am graphic designer in Turkiye and how to create a wine label material using Arnold material on C4D I don't know...it's very easy for me with C4D materials but it's look complicated with Arnold material..example; how to create material setup for Wine label with Arnold material....in wine label I want to use foil and glossy wine paper..is it possible layering material in Arnold? if you have a time can you tell me with a video tutorial please? thank you very much.
is there no way in c4d to create high detailed jagged edges destruction like houdini? voroni fracture is great and but it's the same type of pieces. I need to know if I create scenes like houdini or do I need to focus my attention on another application
thanks for the reply! and that's a bummer i really like the motion tracker in c4d...are you 100% sure there is no way to set thinking particles or perhaps write my owns rule to fracture objects with voroni fracture or python?
HI Chad, this is Lucas from Argentina. thanks for your tuts! A question.. I can´t find good shader/material library for C4D and Arnold. Why? Do you know any? Thanks!!
Hi Lucas.I found an excellent Pack for Arnold 5. Arnold Shader Suite C4D has just release. It’s very good. Also working with latest Arnold Core 5 shaders. www.behance.net/gallery/52696235/Arnold-Shader-Suite-C4D Good Luck
Love ya work Chad! Any tips on getting 3rd party OSL shaders to show up in the Shader Network? Am trying to get the Chaos group shaders you mentioned to work (placed the .osl in ../plugins/C4DtoA/shaders) but not having any luck. Do you need a .mtd file too or something? cheers!
I was going to leave a comment regarding this. I tried a C4D native noise and it worked however, I couldn't get the animation loop setting to work. Still, this is a great option since the C4D noises have way more options, parameters and noise types.
I've just seen Autodesks subscription only pricing structure for Arnold and I'm gutted beyond belief having only owned it a few months before it was sold to them. I'm far from happy.
Neil I've been in touch with Autodesk and they aren't planning monthly subscriptions for Arnold now but £210 per year to be on the maintenance plan. I guess that's comparable with some other renderers.
Hey there ! great tute ! one thing that makes me crazy is the fact that when I create bump2d and I take the output to the blue box on the bump2d I don't get Main < Shader just Main < Normal/Bump map/height ... whad em I doing wrong ? HELP!
Chad, do you also know if the textures created in Max can be used cross platform in C4D? Must admit im concerned for Arnolds future for C4D now its tied up with Autodesk as they managed to kill off T-Splines for Rhino after they got hold of it sadly. Cheerio and keep up the fantastic work.
Has anyone noticed the difference between the lighting between the preview and the final render? I used a skydome light with an hdr and the preview was much more lighter then the final render with the new version. Anyone else?
Try using Quick Shading N~C. Arnold lights won't display exactly the same as the IPR 1:1. We suggest using the IPR to adjust your light settings and not the viewport. Thanks for watching!
12:45 Isn't spread just how divergent your rays are from the light (That's how it works in Maya)? Have a look at what your background is doing, and perhaps show us what the shadows are doing. I feel like you didn't explain this properly.
Interesting your comments on denoisers being bad math as I've been looking at renders created in Corona recently and been blown away by them which includes a denoiser in the software which is a pretty good outcome for something with poor math. I'm having a major crisis with renderers at the moment generally as just when I think I've hit jackpot with the perfect renderer something seemingly better pops up. 12 months ago I purchased both Arnold and Octane and still I don't know which is better but I've managed to crash Octane without too much effort and both are strange on interiors which is my forte. So here Iam 12 months later making comparisons with Redshift and Corona now. Please help me Chad and provide a comparison between all 4 as this current renderer war presently has me shell shocked.
Greyscalegorilla Hi Chad I've just read your article and pretty much where I'm at with the exception of Corona making serious waves with architectural visualisers and some of the interiors I've seen better than anything out there. Also I learned the other day that Chaos Group have purchased Corona which seems to be a very wise move. I'm currently playing with a demo install of Redshift and the Alpha of Corona but in terms of pricing Redshift is far the cheapest offer but maybe won't stay there for long. For the time being tho I'm sticking with Arnold as it just has the most flexibility and capability and I'm going to wait to see how Redshift and Corona progress before making a real plunge for one of them. Sad news for Octane tho as I only see that as a toy presently ...yeh it's fast but so what and quality over speed any day. Keep up the good work Chad and have you looked at Isotropix Clarisse?

Agreed!
Thanks Chad for sharing all this new features on the new arnold renderer. Cheers!
You're welcome!
Awesome Thanks Chad - Please make the Arnold course if you can get the time. Would buy it for sure.
Chad, thanks for the awesome live stream, i was there and it was perfect.
DIODE thanks for joining me!!
Chads the man thanks for your time.

Yeah Arnold seems like the way to go. This was fun. Love you man!
I'd pay for your Arnold course.
Soon, I hope!
Yes!

Best course ever!
ill pay it too ;) very nice tut
please no! i beg you...what about poor guys like me?
Thank you Chad!....Awesome Arnold workflow, as always!
You're welcome!
Very interesting. Sound is crystal clear.
Thanks!
Excellent again returned to Arnold ;)
Dang... I wish I could have caught this live... lot's of great tips and information. And a sphere pooping turd machine too.
And totally looking forward to the arnold material library when you finally have the time to recreate and distribute it!
Love Transmission and Coat, though I was a little disappointed that they didn't include a rounded edge shader.
Thanks for the livestream. This is awesome.
Awesome! Thank you Chad!
You are welcome MES!!
User_data attribute should become a pull down menu.
chad, you are the best.
los nojos thanks!!! 😁😁😁

What about nested Dielectric in Arnold 5? The JF Nested Dielectric Shader doesn't work anymore in Arnold 5.
I think a new one may be in the works.
Thanks so much for your awesome tutorial ! I have a question that when i connect the standard to bump I can`t find the shader. It showed " bump map , bump height , shader" before, it show "bump map , bump height , normal' Could you please tell me how to solve this problem.

Would it be possible to create a volumetric light so the actual volumetric effect is in the light source rather than just a light illuminating a volume in front of it? In other words would it be possible to recreate the volumetric lights actually found in C4D?
Hmm I'm not entirely sure I follow you. Do you have an example image?

C4d has its own volumetric lights which I use all the time but Arnold seems to stick with real world situations .
Hi Chad,
whats your e-mail address so i can send image please.
LOL... 'for my boy nick...the shiny balls... in all their glory...' :'D
you rock, man! :) THX SO MUCH!
awesome tutorial! hi guys! where can i connect my "ambient occlusion" image in standard surface? to specular? or else? please help! thanksss
Dear Chad, firstly thanks for great tuorial but I have a little request from you if possible.

Can you tell me how to remove background of Physical sky at the rendering image? I read the guide but nothing said about that :( . Thank you!
Did you mention what CPU(s) you are using? It's kind of hard to tell how fast Arnold is without knowing that information.
my build specs are here greyscalegorilla.com/resources/ (chad's)
is there no way in c4d to create high detailed jagged edges destruction like houdini? voroni fracture is great and but it's the same type of pieces. I need to know if I create scenes like houdini or do I need to focus my attention on another application
C4D is not known for detailed destruction fx, you may try houdini or 3ds max
thanks for the reply! and that's a bummer i really like the motion tracker in c4d...are you 100% sure there is no way to set thinking particles or perhaps write my owns rule to fracture objects with voroni fracture or python?

I'm sorry, I haven't had any success with it yet. I'll report back when I do. thanks for the comment
Actually not difficult at all here, ends up I just had a permissions mis match on the shader folder..
the update now has support for c4d noises!

Hey guys.I need help! I can't understand how how to set a z-depth aov in Arnold render. Can someone help me?
I've just seen Autodesks subscription only pricing structure for Arnold and I'm gutted beyond belief having only owned it a few months before it was sold to them. I'm far from happy.
It's definitely a deal breaker for me. Perpetual license > annual subscription
Neil I've been in touch with Autodesk and they aren't planning monthly subscriptions for Arnold now but £210 per year to be on the maintenance plan. I guess that's comparable with some other renderers.
Thanks for the info, Glyn!
Chad, is a premium Arnold course in the works or just an idea at the momemt?
Right now its just in my head. Haven't had time to solidify any of it. Soon I hope. Thanks for the comment!
Hey there ! great tute ! one thing that makes me crazy is the fact that
when I create bump2d and I take the output to the blue box on the bump2d
I don't get Main < Shader just Main < Normal/Bump map/height ...

U save my WEEK! Thanks... why nobody says that? i'm get almost crazy trying to figure out.
Chad,
do you also know if the textures created in Max can be used cross platform in C4D? Must admit im concerned for Arnolds future for C4D now its tied up with Autodesk as they managed to kill off T-Splines for Rhino after they got hold of it sadly.
Cheerio and keep up the fantastic work.
I believe that .ass files can be loaded cross platform (maya, max, houdini)
Cool,
i might have to wait for your tutorial on that one. Would that be thru the texture manager?
Has anyone noticed the difference between the lighting between the preview and the final render? I used a skydome light with an hdr and the preview was much more lighter then the final render with the new version. Anyone else?
Haven't seen that issue. I know some people had issues with skydome shadows not being turned on. That could be the cause.
i have a question if i make glass material my alpha channel is not right the alpha is filling all my geometry not as the standart cinema render
Hey guys, where did the Shader under bump2D go to? I dont have it anymore with this relase
geo>normal
thanks
is there anyway to control the strength of normal map texture?
Really disappointed that the GPU renderer is still not released :(
All in due time ;)
Who is in your DP ?
I dont have a dropdown to choose a texture in sky object, i have a button that pops open and i cant link it to HDRI LINK. Any suggestions?
They changed how the skylight works in Arnold 5. Here is a GIF with the proper workflow: www.dropbox.com/s/i5yij49kwwb8rj6/Arnold5_HDRI_Link.gif?dl=0
Thank you, that helped.
when i turn on quad light the models in viewport go full matte black, render comes out ok though. what did i press omg XD
Try using Quick Shading N~C. Arnold lights won't display exactly the same as the IPR 1:1. We suggest using the IPR to adjust your light settings and not the viewport. Thanks for watching!
perfect then ! thanks for teaching ! :)

You are exactly correct. I did not notice that the light was actually focusing as well as the reflection. Thanks for pointing this out!
I thought so; GREAT update though even for me as a Maya user. Thanks :)
Can I export animatioms with shaders to maya from c4d
Cool but, what about the gpu version?
still wip, will prolly take a while

Have you read the article that Sekani Soloman and I did for motionographer?
Greyscalegorilla no I've not seen that. Do you have a link?
Greyscalegorilla Chad I've found the article thanks....just reading!

chad, check out the interior renders by Edouard Caliman on Instagram as they are all created in Max and Corona.
how to reduce noise on arnold
ARNOLD MEANS QUALITY.
for me it's all right
whats the deal with arnold and caustics?
This should help you support.solidangle.com/display/AFCUG/Caustics
Thank s Good Man
You are welcome!
Love the video. But how many times can this guy say ummm. Driving me crazy. LOL
uhmm, sorry.
No Prob.. love the tut tho.. great work.. thanks
hahah, you are welcome! Hopefully it was worth the uhms.
Yes it was. Thanks. Learned allot.
one question for you.. AO in Arnold ? is it auto matic?
arnold is cpu or gpu dependent?
+angel ricardo Arnold is CPU for now.
😎👍
Hello bro
Hello!
ok
hi!
