    As someone who's been on and off a paid Pluralsight subscriber for a couple years, I gotta say that what this guy offers for free on UA-cam is just amazing. As a matter of fact, Pluralsight got nothing on this channel. The only difference is that Pluralsight offers a more structured program, but other than that, this guy understanding and how well he's able to convey his knowledge is spot on. This is content he should be charging money for. It's that good.

    Found this to be a really great explanation of modelling in c4d. I liked the amount of detail you went through and showed how to overcome some difficult polygons, etc.
    The level at which you went through is very thorough and very beneficial to anyone beginning modelling. It sets up a really good foundation for new users to keep in mind with future modelling.
    The length of the video is really good imo. The issue with a lot of tutorials from others is they rush details or very briefly cover something. They also make mistakes due to the rushed nature of them and you'll find sometimes they undo 5 or 6 steps, which is frustrating.
    Your tutorial is truly excellent, showing in real-time the issues one can encounter.
    I mostly prefer book tutorials, except they can be restricted with the amount of detail they can go into, so a lot of time can be spent searching the help guide on how certain tools or actions were performed.
    This video, on this topic is excellent.
    Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!

      I'm happy you liked the video. I wanted to show some practical real-world advice and techniques to help beginners. I tend to make my videos long but I want to be clear and thorough. I am always trying to balance Clear and concise with thorough explanations. I'm a work in progress :)

    Hey Michael, thank you so much for taking your time with all these tutorials. I'm trying to go into C4d with the mindset of learning first before rushing in and creating bad habits, which is something I've done with Premiere and After Effects. Your videos force me to take a step back and listen, so thank you :)

    Hi, thanks for taking the time to make this videos. You are a great help! My question is... Why do it this way that takes so much time and not just import the lines from illustrator and just do an EXTRUDE? That has always been my question!

    • @MichaelBalchaitis
      @MichaelBalchaitis  6 років тому +4

      Great question. You certainly can use illustrator or splines for very basic modeling. And in some cases it would that would work just fine. But you quickly learn, when modeling, that using illustrator and extrude object will become extremely limited in what you can model. You will not be able to use deformers because the way the Extrude object makes the cap. The mesh will also become a mess under sub-division. UV mapping will become a nightmare when adding textures. Illustrator and the extrude object can only do the most basic models. The example I made in the video isn't the best and you could use the Illustrator and extrude object method. I think I will redo the video with a better example and more concise video. Thanks for the comment!

    wow... appreciate your efforts on the importance of quads... from your reference pic I would have traced the edges with a spline and then added cylinders to the holes and use the Boole to make the holes... also you'd think with the multitude of tools C4D has it would have some type of tool to create an even amount of quads to accomplish what you gad to go through.

Create a shape like that with the pen tool or combining shapes and then extrude the layer from the Photoshop's 3D menu as Postcard. Voila'. 5-10 minutes job, depends on how good you are with the pen tool.
