You definitely made me re-think my Octane vs. Arnold renderer decision about which one will be my next renderer. I have seen also your GSG comparison video where you pointed out perfectly why you are in love with Arnold. To be honest, I haven't work neither with Octane nor Arnold but after watching a lot of tutorials on both sides, Arnold to me makes a much more homogeneous piece of render software and the learning curve seems to be much steeper.
+Chad Ashley Absolutely. But not only regarding Arnold. You also made me thinking twice regarding Octane in regards to RedShift even if it does not have a final C4D Plugin yet. But your thought (you named it the Octane effect) is right and things I stared reading on RedShift look more like Arnold for GPU than Octane from the way how to deal with it. I have seen your RedShift test renders on Instagram and it looked amazing!
Just putting this out there, I love you guys for sharing all of this for free, I wouldn't have a career in this industry if it wasn't for you! Thank you very much and sorry for the sudden burst of emotion xD
Im up pretty late tonight watching this series on Arnold. Id like to learn how to layer textures in Arnold like in Bodypaint. Im sure youve covered it , but I havent found it as such. Love the Node based workflow too, forces me to use Xpresso more .Thanks for these series of tutorials.
Thank you for this +Greyscalegorilla And, I think there is an issue with new version 2.4.1. I don't know may be because it is a demo version I have. I can not get exact colors (5 colors) as output. There are middle values. I put my 5 colors to the ramp and made them 'step' BTW. anyway, huge thanx !
Hey Chad ! First of all, Wonderfull tutorial, thankyout. I am a new bee for Arnold and C4d as well. I tried the ramp rgb for different pictures in photo frame, I got the output in CPU render but in the GPU render I get only the gradient shaders according to the ramp but not the pictures. I really appreciate, if you can give me the solution , thanks in advance.
What gets me is understanding what each node is outputting. I can copy what you’re doing but it frustrates me not knowing WHAT I’m doing. Like how do I know when to use the rgb_to_float node? What is the utility node exactly outputting, what value and in what form so I know what to plug into that? How do I know what range is being plugged into the range node from the to_float node? Also, off topic but my version does not have the linearize node.
It depends if you are going from sRGB to data. If you are using an sRGB node and using it to drive a data node, you would need to linearize it. Hope that helps
i thought that.. for example if you want to connect object id to color then you would have to pass it through linearize. but if you are connecting it to specular weight or roughness then you should leave it as is.
I hate that nod system but it is sooooooooo powerful! Yeah more Arnold tutorial please (especially alsurface plug-in ) - there is no alsurface tutorials :/
Great work! Is it possible to copy one node from a shader network and paste it into or pull it somehow into another network ? if so how? Thank guy looking forward to hdri Link
Thanks I saw you demo that in another video. Got another would you ever pull in a network shader that has bump in it and then do another bump on top of that for whatever reason or would you just use one bump and try to control the look of the bump for different materials with a layer color node. Got a lot of questions since I just picked this up..maybe someway I could feed you questions better for future videos?
ran into a the answer to the bump question. Basically make two materials with bump in each of them and then reference them both into another material and then layer them using a layer color node which is put into the beauty. Your going to need and alpha on one of those layers in the layer color node just to be able to show the difference.
How would you randomise the uv information? rotation and offset of either one texture map, or as in the Ikea photos, a series of random images in a folder.?
can i uv map a video texture instead of a single image ,, i tried to use the camera calibration but it just worked for a single image ,, so if you have a way to do that this will be great i hope you answer me cuz i really need that :)
For some reason, I can't select "none" for my color interpolation on my ramp node in the latest version of Arnold (running Arnold 6.0.3.1). Does anyone know how I can get a clean image? Thanks in advance!
I put a utility shader on an object so every polygon has a different color (object is animated by deformers). Now the colors of the polygons change every frame. How do i fix that? Really appreciate your help :)
Even simpler than the official videos, Great Job!! Keep them coming!!
I just love these guys ! I built my whole career watching your tutorials. Keep the good work up guys
Chad, you are the new C4DtoA God! Love every tutorial you make for Arnold. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
You make my day Chad, mooore and moooore Arnold !!! Plssssss
Thanks Video Leming!
Really helpful, can't find any Arnold tutorials anywhere. This is perfect, thanks
You're welcome!
Chad Ashley Will there be more C4DtoA tutorials in the future? These are really easy to follow
Most definitely there will be more! Thanks for the comment!
Fantastic tutorial, Chad. Makes me wish we had Arnold at work.

Thanks for this tutorial! Looking forward for more project based tutorials for Arnold like this.
You're welcome Cpapadakis!
MIKE AND CHAD ALL THE RESPECT GORELLLAAAZZZZZ !!!!!
Yes finally more Arnold! Thanks Chad
You're welcome Julian!
wtf this is amazing. i could listen to chad talk about rendering for days
Awesome! Waiting Second part of Arnold Material!

You're very welcome Sorin!
Awesome! Thank you Chad!
What's up MES! Thanks dude!
Amazing, simply amazing, more Arnold would be great XD thank you!
Thanks Miguel!
yeah. new arnold stuff. thanks chad!
You're welcome Enter Blank!
FINALLY FOUND WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!! THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Oh thank you chad, finally i'm getting it . . .
Awesome Terry, glad to hear it!
JUST AMAZING!!! THANK YOU!
Really loving this channel and appreciating these arnold tutorials. Was wondering if you'll ever be going over volume in arnold?
Yep, I plan on doing some volume work soon. Thanks for the comment!

You're welcome Agustin!
Cool video lot of information.. May I know how to swap two textures.. Like vertex shader using.. Etc
Thank you for this +Greyscalegorilla

keep up the great work guys! I have a question though, is there a way of using the GSG HDRI Rig with Arnold?
Also sorry, If I use the Arnold Sky, when I plug an HDRI into it, its coming out at black and white? Any ideas? Thanks!
We have a plugin called HDRI Link that does exactly this. Should be out early 2017. Stay tuned!
Thanks a lot for your Videos, Chad.
Is there a method to make these random colors with Redshift?
Yep, here is a method that Merkvilson recently posted on Twitter twitter.com/Merkvilson/status/927263321031675905
Cool! Thanks a lot!
Looks like the Alshaders link is corrupt. Send you to a different spammy place every time.
Nice!!! The video at 8minutes. Can we use the utility node for different texturez on a scifi tiles displacement shader?
Not sure I follow the question, can you elaborate?
wow. nice one. thanks! is linearization necessary for material inputs? or its just for preview?
It depends if you are going from sRGB to data. If you are using an sRGB node and using it to drive a data node, you would need to linearize it. Hope that helps

hey Chad. thanks for random color tip again. here is my result instagram.com/p/BMhobnDB-IB/?taken-by=iraklisan
I hate that nod system but it is sooooooooo powerful! Yeah more Arnold tutorial please (especially alsurface plug-in ) - there is no alsurface tutorials :/
I LOVE nodes. It's just a matter of getting used to them. Thanks for the comment!
Hey Chad BIG thanks for the tutorial, I'm a new user of Arnold. I can't find the way to make perforated material
it would be a great help thank you .
Where are you getting stuck?
I wanted to recreate this texture with "Arnold" Thank you

Great work! Is it possible to copy one node from a shader network and paste it into or pull it somehow into another network ? if so how? Thank guy looking forward to hdri Link
Yep, this is a great feature. You can also pull other nodes/shaders into different networks created a reference. Very useful. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks I saw you demo that in another video. Got another would you ever pull in a network shader that has bump in it and then do another bump on top of that for whatever reason or would you just use one bump and try to control the look of the bump for different materials with a layer color node. ran into a the answer to the bump question. Basically make two materials with bump in each of them and then reference them both into another material and then layer them using a layer color node which is put into the beauty. Your going to need and alpha on one of those layers in the layer color node just to be able to show the difference.
Прекрасная работа, тема раскрыта. Молодец!
I Love You CHADDDDD!!!!!
Wow! Thanks Auldz!
Awesome . Thank s
You're welcome!
Is there a way to do distribute different textures to instances as you did at the last part of the tutorial but in Octane?
Спасибо! очень интересно и полезно! Arnold beautiful render!
MOREEEEEEEEE ARNOLD PLEASE! :)
More arnold render tutorials, pls!
We are workin on it! Thanks for the comment!
Hi, Chad, is it possible to do the same in octane? (I mean, add textures to the gradient)
How would you randomise the uv information? rotation and offset of either one texture map, or as in the Ikea photos, a series of random images in a folder.?
Using the same utility method but instead driving offsets in a UV Transform node. hope this helps!
eyy it just got reup! Why was this removed in the first place?
hahah yeah, thank you chad! for this kind
You're welcome Irshad!
Is there a reason not to use the Grayscale mode of the Random node and use the RGB2Float node in stead?
Great point Wodan74! I hadn't seen that before. Thanks for contributing! You just saved me one node ;)
How to make gradient towards one direction rather than random ?
Nice video. Do you have the project file for this?
Sorry, we can't give out the scene files for this...we didn't make the models.
is there anyway you could tell me what the settings on your arnold shader is for the legos? im working on a project and it would be a great help
Where are you getting stuck?
Hey Chad, do you know how can I make my own shaders library and save them in a Presets folder?
click on your material, click "create" in material tab(above on your material) and click "Save material preset"
could i achive this result with ligth?
can i uv map a video texture instead of a single image ,, i tried to use the camera calibration but it just worked for a single image ,, so if you have a way to do that this will be great i hope you answer me cuz i really need that :)
For some reason, I can't select "none" for my color interpolation on my ramp node in the latest version of Arnold (running Arnold 6.0.3.1). Does anyone know how I can get a clean image? Thanks in advance!
Right click on the ramp, Interpolation of all Knots, Step.
@
Seth Deter I have the same problem, but right click > step didnt fix that, how do you solve this problem?
What PC you have? :o
fast as a cat trying to walking on a frozen pond :) which is pretty damn fast. Id like his GPU
Arnold is a CPU render :-)
I put a utility shader on an object so every polygon has a different color (object is animated by deformers). Now the colors of the polygons change every frame. How do i fix that? Really appreciate your help :)
Interesting, I'll look into it. thanks for the comment!
the name of the track with the background?
i want vray so bad :)
But thanks anyway for picture color picking tip in variance shader :) Here is my vray render s25.postimg.org/v3ejg9a1r/legos_net.jpg
So this has nothing to do with Arnold Schwarzenegger? FINE! I'll watch anyway
i miss goofer!!! ;)
Do you mean my dog Cooper? ;)
Chad Ashley yes yes yes... it was cooper and not goofer... :)))))
i want octane so bad XP
Soon, I promise! Thanks for the comment!
