He literally cried over Maria’s body. It’s why Talos had to drag him away. That scene on the bench was him being overwhelmed - and yes losing the job. Because he needs the resources to keep BOTH of his promises- to Maria’s mother and to Talos. And to have someone you consider a friend call you mediocre…he was spiraling. He has no one to turn to at this point.

Respectfully... This is how Fury grieves for Maria Hill. People in the "profession" would focus more on finishing the mission to honor the memory of those they have lost. After the job is done there will be time for tears. This is very much in keeping with the cold war spy motif of this show. And a theme that should be familiar from the Expanse and Firefly.

Fury gave away his emotional reaction to losing Maria Hill when he actually watched her die. He was a mess in that moment, but had to put the “man in control” mask back on once he was back dealing with other people.

100% agree. People grieve differently. Just because one person will shed a tear over her death does not mean the next person will as well. When Fury kicked Talos off the train, I knew that was him still processing everything. I mean... yeah... the revelation of one million Skrulls on Earth was a surprise to him... but had Fury been 100% himself he probably wouldn't have gone off on Talos.
When Fury was talking to Maria's mother Elizabeth, you can see the pain in Fury's face. That moment belonged to the mother and her emotion. Fury crying would have taken over the scene. I think the director and showrunner made the right call in this scene.

  • @Deepthoughtsabound

Fury seemed to be grieving over her when Talos pretended to kidnap him. I think the breakdown was a culmination of his pain, shame, and guilt for Maria. He knows he will keep working on this battle. This is already starting to remind me of Andor. It's a darker, more mature look at the MCU. The writing is great, and the content is great too. I hope there isn't a sky beam. I wish they would have given 4-5 more minutes for the funeral, train, and bar scene to breathe though.

@@mr.stuffdoer8483 Of course bud. I didn't know it would hurt someone's feelings. I just think they're doing a great job so far. I don't want to see CGI armies or sky beams. Andor did the same thing. Everything had heart and purpose. I just hope it keeps the storytelling. So far, it's really well done.

Cull Obsidian was the Big Guy among the children of Thanos in Infinity War... It looks like they got a sample of his DNA from the arm that Wong cut off with the portal. The other sources were from Groot (not sure where he left a piece of himself), the monster from the Frost Giants' world that was running around London after Thor: The Dark World, and a sample of Extremis which AIM was using to make people regenerate (and explode) in Iron Man 3. The suggestion would be that they're going to be creating some Super Skrulls... Skrulls that can go toe-to-toe with the Fantastic Four and Avengers and possibly impersonate them by duplicating their power sets.

Lots of fans are wondering what Fury will do when he learns his wife is a Skrull. He 10000% knows. That's probably the Skrull from the flashback and they fell in love and got married. Shes the reason Nick still thinks the Skrulls are worth fighting for.

I disagree on Fury being more bothered by the Rhodey conversation than Maria. He was very distraught when Talos pulled him out. And then broke down in the train. And then broke down after Rhodey as more of a culmination of everything.

      @mr.stuffdoer8483 Рік тому +15

Yeah, breaking down after Rhodey was breaking down because in a day, he lost his right hand woman, lost all trust in his best friend, and was disavowed by his nation. Fury’s a pretty cold guy a times, even he can’t take all that.

@@mr.stuffdoer8483I disagree. I believe this scene reveals the flaw in Rhodey's character. A flaw they downplay, but is still there. When it's all said and done, Col. Rhodes is a bureaucrat. One who came up through the military, but still a bureaucrat, and rarely is able to allow his gut feelings or personal attachments overcome that bureaucratic, by the book, follow the rules mentality.
And it's sad his history with Fury hasn't given him enough reason, as it SHOULD, to back his play in this instance, the consequences be damned.

The 4 we saw on screen were Groot, the big creature that got left behind in the mid credits of Thor Ragnorock, Thanos' big muscle, and the Extremis power from Iron Man 3. They are collecting samples of power to integrate those abilities into Skrulls.

It's not the loss of his job that caused him to break down. It was Rhodey, whom he considered a colleague and a friend, turning his back on him and reminding him once again of his responsibility for Anita's death not long after her mother did the same. Also after he'd just pushed away one of his closest friends for not sharing vital information with him out of anger. On top of that, it is implied that Garik was something of an adoptive son to him. Steve and Tony are gone and he fears putting the remaining Avenger's at risk. He feels overwhelmed, betrayed, and alone and that is the reason he breaks down.

I can't stop thinking about what you said about the decision not to show Nick grieving for Maria. I think Marvel is trying to keep him in character. We didn't see Nick show emotion when he lost Phil, or when he lost Natasha and Tony, so I didn't think much of it until the emotion he showed after losing his job. After thinking about that scene, I don't think his emotional display was about the job. I think it was more about feeling like he was losing control of the situation, and what would happen to humanity if he didn't. That played into what Maria's mom said to him: don't let Maria's death be for nothing. When you look at it that way, those tears could have been for Maria

The Skrull story is very deep in the comics. It goes back to 1960s storylines. I think we are all seeing the creation of the Super Skrull or something familiar to it. The story is deep and the Skrulls have many factions. I think we have yet to be introduced to the 3rd faction that they have hinted to in this episode. The Secret Invasion is very different than the source material because they have introduced Skrulls very differently in the MCU. However the warning about making up a story you think you like is that any Skrull story can take any of a number directions so just go show by show. Anything can happen and I don't trust deaths. Fury may know even more so just don't be surprised. I like good deaths in stories and I am ok with this one but I know comics and no one stays dead.

Just don't let it ever happen again!
As for Maria not having a life and giving up a lot, that comes with the job in the espionage field that SHIELD agents willingly accept. Agent Coulson did not have a personal life when he died (there was the musician but that didn't work out) and Nick Fury didn't shed a tear when he died either. He was in despair but he did not cry. Black Widow did not have much of a personal life either when she sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone. She summed it up best when talking to Steve Rogers about it in the stolen truck scene during The Winter Soldier when Steve said he wanted her to be a friend: "Well there's a chance you might be in the wrong business, Rogers." Sharon Carter also did not have a personal life before or after the Blip.
The only exception to the rule was Hawkeye who fell in love with fellow Agent 13 and the price for having this personal life was to keep it a closely guarded secret (known only to Natasha Romanov and Nick Fury) as well as an early retirement for both agents.

I actually took his small breakdown after meeting with Rhodey to actually be his reaction to Maria Hill. I think that someone like Fury holds things in and doesn't react to them, but finds that things will "bust out" from time to time. Pretty sure he didn't give a damn about losing his job. (Totally my own personal take, not saying it's the "correct" one.) Love your reactions! (And still miss you reacting to Ted Lasso.)

The more i rewatch this scene between Rhodey and Fury, the more i appreciate it. Rhodey wasn't contacted first when Fury formed the Avengers. Nick Fury contacted a white weapons manufacturer. Then he contacted a white popsicle who only had training from WWII. All I'm saying is, the Avengers would have been better if Rhodey had been the one, and not Tony. And I think that's why it's so easy for Rhodey to say what he did. As far as I know, this is the first time Rhodey and Fury have ever shared not only a scene together, but dialogue together, in the entire franchise. 😮😂😢

Thinking that Rhodey is upset due to racial implications is extremely missing the point and literally misinterpreting his own words. He isn't upset because "he didnt get the call". He is doing his job as a company man, which he has always been, and is pissed because Fury at this point in time has been dropping the ball all over the place.

I don't think the first episode was bad at all, even with Maria's fate at the end, so long as the series makes it worth it. Does that make sense? I think it's a good move to set the stakes but if it's just dropped or we don't see the ramifications in future episodes then it'll be wasted. Either way, I like seeing Fury on his back foot because we all know he'll come through in the end! 'Even when I'm out, I'm in.'

So if you didn’t know about the part where Gi’iah was looking at the computer researching behind Gravik back and saw those experimental records?!?!? If you didnt know?!?! Is it a Super Skrull reference from the comics and a Fantastic Four Reference from the comics as well……..
    Groot Sample-Mr.Fantastic
    Frost Beast Sample-Invisible Women
    Cull Obsidian Hand Sample-The Thing
    Extremis Sample-Human Torch
Groot Samples were found out on the battlefields of either Wakanda in Avengers Infinity War Or The Avengers Compound that got destroyed at the finale of Avengers Endgame
Frost Beast Samples are most likely from out from another part of London Paris because that’s where the finales of Thor 2: The Dark World toon place and that’s where that beast was summoned at accidentally
Cull Obsidian Hand Sample was when in Avengers Infinity War during the second fight scene in NY out near Doctor Strange & Grandmaster Wongs Sanctum Santorum house….when during the fight with Iron Man,Bruce,Doc Strange,Wong & Later Spider-Man against Cull Obsidian & Ebony Ma Bruce was about to get attacked but Cull from behind while Iron Man & Wong are protecting him?!?!! Wong open that portal and shut it in culls hand the right time and sent it back to that one area that Cull had gotten Iron Man Down on the ground stuck in his Claw Arm thing but yea
Extremis Sample comes from Iron Man 3 when Aldrich Killian made that weird experiment flare power thing where those bad guys was glowing like fire whenever they use the power so yea that source of that power from that villain from Iron Man 3 is where they got Extremis from

Personally I feel like humans not being able to coexist with humans is not really an argument against humans coexisting with Skrulls. Humans are able to coexist sort of despite not having a lot of tolerance for each other, so I feel like aliens could very realistically just fit into that dynamic. Just another group that coexists in a dysfunctional way. As long as it is less effort to let them be than to fight them, they will just be another weird neighbor. I don't think it has to be a binary between harmony and annihilation, there are many middle grounds. The terrorist angle is not gonna make it easy though.

  • @reverance_pavane

I liked the fact they used Ai in the titles to make it distinctly inhuman and alien. It is AI being used properly - as a tool by humans. As opposed to trying to replace humans.
And humans are inherently xenophobic (although the good ones ignore this when dealing with others). Which is probably why they were the only hominids to reach historical times. And shape-changing or parasitic aliens have always been an existential threat in this regard. Because it destroys trust. But you are not a fool for hoping for better - for *that* to define what it truly means to be human.
    Happy London trip!

You said it yourself. "No tears for Maria"... *because she's not dead*. I think the writers stressed too much in the first episode that Fury is too old for this. Maria said the old Fury was always three steps ahead. I think he still is. They said multiple times that the bombs were DIRTY, i.e., HIGHLY radioactive. Thus the two thousand deaths *thus far* from four small bombs. To me, both Fury and Hill looked too calm when there, especially when the bombs detonated. In that scene, both Skrull. The second epidide, Talos grabs Fury as Hill is guvibg her last breath. Befure she changes or soleone else grabs her and saves her. It won't be lazy writing because this is all modeled after classic spy and whodunnit thrillers. The writers are building a reveal for how Fury was three steps ahead. The lazy part may be how Rambeau was involved, some deus ex machina tweak. But I'm still eager for a clever twist or five. The showrunner said he was inspired by Orson Welles films... Deige gave this the greenlight from the furst pitch meeting. So I have faith still. But in only four more episides? That's two movies, but... Fingers crossed (not cut off)...
