At some point, the Skrulls are going to realize that if they do this, then they'll have become the Kree and that a victory that turns you into your enemy is a defeat. I'm almost certain that someone on the show will end up saying words to this effect at some point during this series.

Like others have stated this take on Secret Invasion is VERY different to the comics from the reasons why the Skrulls invade Earth to who are the main characters and the overall roster of characters who show up. Alot of the character from the comic don't actually exist in the MCU yet to our knowledge at least like X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Woman, Nolan Osborn, Doctor Doom etc. It's also following the history of the MCU so it will not connect to the past events of the comics so they'll be a whole new origin on why they invade and the players involved. It also seems much more grounded in that we'll never see any major Superhero's being taken over by Skrulls instead focusing on the important humans of Earth from government leaders to people in high society pulling the strings.
The major death in this episode instantly elevates the threat, creates a convincing and dangerous villain. Also that characters loss sets the tone, and is an appropriate ending to that characters story. Spies die un-thanked and and un-lauded all the time, its the sort of death that is what they sign up for, and makes the series feel more real.

Watching your reaction, that Olivia Coleman line (the fact you didn’t see them coming means you haven’t a hope in hell of seeing Gravik and his rebels coming) made me realise something I didn’t catch when I watched the episode. Whilst his response of “I let your men take me” is meant to instil confidence in Fury, and whilst he may have seen her men coming, she’s ultimately proven to be right at the end of the episode when gravik is able to detonate the bombs and we see how unprepared Fury really is
I can appreciate that they had to set the stakes high but I'm also a bit upset. RIP Maria.
I suspect that Cobie Smulders will be back, possibly playing a Skrull who will pretend to be Maria Hill while bodyguarding Fury. Or something.
@@kerouac.jackson Maybe, but I doubt it. As much as it sucks, it's actually a good thing that they're setting high stakes by having likeable, fan-favorite characters die. And I doubt it even more but if they really wanted Maria back there's always Tahiti. I hear it's a magical place.

Maria Hill would still have died. I'm just saying that they can bring the actress back as a skrull playing Maria Hill, something that probably wouldn't happen until after this series is resolved. Her status as a special guest star just means that she won't be in every episode of this series.
I am a bit disappointed in Maria’s death, but could have been a number of reasons - perhaps Smulders wanted not to keep playing the character, or just for the whole “making the stakes higher” thing. What bugs me most is that she survived some of the craziest **** in the MCU, only to get gut-shot in a kind of dramatically short moment.
So excited to see Maria FINALLY get her own show... Aaand fridged. Very upsetting
I mean, its more Fury's show lol but I was excited to see more of Hill than just the small spurts we've gotten over the years and was disappointed when she was shot but I also get it. Gotta raise the stakes!
Very cool you’re doing this almost immediately after release. The pilot looks promising for the series so far. And the whole vibe of classic spy thriller is spot on and I like they establish that good guys aren’t so easy to tell from bad guys. I also like that no one is safe, even in the first episode.
Out of all these reactions I've never seen such clear anger than during that ending! Much deserve though, if this is it that's such a stunning waste of potential after waiting for this series to finally expand on these characters.

Hill is probably the only Human that Fury had to rely on, so I see how killing her off raised the stakes on Fury being the Lone Wolf on this mission. Wow I saw how angry you got at the end there! LOL In real life I guess her contract was up....Now what I would love to see is them bringing Coulson back 🙂
Fury went off planet cause he lost Tony and Natasha. His first Avenger recruit (even knew his father) and one of most trusted agent. When Fury ‘died’ in Winter Soldier it really messed Natasha up. I can imagine Fury had a similar connection to Natasha.
Regarding Maria Hill: it's always the people we took for granted, the people who were always there, in the background, doing their job, not being the focus or center of attention....but somehow when they're gone, it almost hurts worse. Maybe it has something to do with regret- with the unrealized potential of moments not shared. Maybe it even makes us blame ourselves, for not paying enough attention to them while they were here. Maybe if we had appreciated them more, we would have had more time with them. Yes, even for fictional characters, this can be true. I think this is why Maria Hill's death hit everyone pretty hard.

The thing I'm unclear about is in the opening, are they implying that a skrull copied Ross temporarily to get information, or is Ross captured and has been a skrull for a long time?
That is a good question. He could be one of the prisoners that they are duplicating.
No one is happy about Maria Hill, we all were excited to see her and then she was taken away from us! Goes to show how well Marvel develops their characters we all loved her!
So...they actually do have a planet they could give the skrulls ( there might be some reason it doesn't work though). The planet Thanos retired to . Very lush lots of plant life, no people .captain Marvel certainly knows about it
I think we would all have loved more Maria Hill in the MCU, but what a way to heart-wrench everybody, so we know that nobody is safe. 😲
While I get losing Hill sucks because we like her, there have to be stakes. The show is following humans and they can't kill Fury obviously with it being his show, so someone we know and like has to die as well as be a Skrull. I also wouldn't be surprised if Talos dies as a way to motivate G'iah to fully join Fury against the rebel Skrulls.
Btw, that machine that they were using for memories was in Captain Marvel. Talos hooked Carol up to it to scan her memories before she broke out and landed on Earth again.
I knew they took their memories but it seemed like it was more than that. Like more than the usual amount?
@@funnylilgalreacts Normally Skrulls usually only do recent memories, but that machine helps with long term since in the movie they saw all through Carol's life. I wouldn't be surprised if it keeps the "shells" as they call them in a kind of stasis.
Given what we saw, I think if Ross is alive, he's a Skrull prisoner.
Hill is just the first casualty in this war. I think we're in for a rough ride. Crank your paranoia to 11. They know what they're doing, and I expect nothing but twists, especially in the back half of the season.
Which makes me wonder if the end credit we saw in Wakanda Forever was just a Skrull impersonating Okoye when Ross was rescued from the American government

@CBDuRietz if the Skrulls have been using Ross for some time, they have a system for keeping the real Ross on ice, as we saw. Fury being doubled in the final scene was just them using his appearance to confuse Hill. Not for long-term infiltration.
I highly recommend “Counterpart” (2017 TV). “Counterpart” was only 2 seasons and they were good, it’s a spy thriller with an interesting twist and great plot.
Still mad, they cancelled it after 2 seasons.

The secret invasion comic story is more about the costumed Heroes , various Avengers teams , X Men , Fantastic Four, Spider Man etc so given that the Avengers are kind of gone now , the FF & X Men are not in the MCU yet this rather cleverly focuses on the non costumed non powered Heroes , also I don't think a TV show has the budget for the big movie names to be in it .
Last five minutes: "Well, goodbye main reason I was interested in this show, I guess..."

I guess the Kree did have a valid excuse for killing Skrulls.
That ending shocked us all but this is just the start we may lose other major characters.
I like the fact that nobody knows who is human or skrull. Major suspense factor. Don't like the fact that the Skrulls are acting like the Kree. Taking over a world that isn't theirs, is what the Kree do.

@@Caseytify Coulson was going crazy until he found one of the test subjects that wasn't going crazy and they figured out what the symbols meant. Now that they understand that, they should be able to address the problem.

That beginning of episode was great.
I'm glad they're going a different route with this Secret Invasion compared to the comic and of course the amazing story arc from Avengers: Earths Mightiest Hero's. This is much more focused on the everyday person rather than Superhero's who in the comics were the one's being replaced. It's also hinted (not confirmed) at that the Skrulls played some part in Civil War (2006) that caused an all out Civil War between all hero's. In Avengers: Earths Mightiest Hero's it features a much smaller roster with The Avengers and Fantastic Four along with other hero's. But how they pull everything off is amazing so I really hope that I love this take and so far I do. Also hear that EP2 is much better as well, still liked this episode even if it's a shower build up I would 100% love an Andor tone and pacing for a show like this but naturally there's always people who arent into that style.
I'm antsy about this series from the beginning, because the Skrulls - and it looks like most of them - are now doing exactly what all the Kree propoganda from Captain Marvel said they'd do. I liked the refugee twist.

Exciting and tense premiere with a shocking ending! I've been looking forward to this series particularly because I was hoping it would course-correct the titanic "Captain Marvel" gaffe of turning the Skrulls from baddies into buddies! SMH. .
Olivia Colman was named Falsworth which means she's the granddaughter of Lord Montgomery Falsworth aka Union Jack, one of Cap's Howling Commandos played by J.J. Feild in "The First Avenger".
Gravik, played by the fantastic Kingsley Ben-Adir of "Peaky Blinders" and "The OA", reveals he was scoping Fury out from the start as he was the girl with the ball and the woman on the bench from his nightwalk and the familiar Russian agent in the spy pub where he met Maria.
The original graphic novel was one of Marvel's best events written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Leinil Yu.
This show is going to have to contort itself to tell the tale because very few of the story elements are in place so I hope it doesn't become unrecognizable from the source material.
Skrullos is devoured by Galactus resulting in a Skrull diaspora. Queen Veranke sets her sights on Earth.
The revelation of the Infiltration occurs at a top-secret meeting of the Illuminati when Black Bolt is revealed as an impostor resulting in the dissolution of the group!
Fury's hip to it much sooner and vanishes recruiting a group of super kids who were so obscure and new to the game that they were off the Skrull radar. He runs them like a Fifth Column of insurgents popping up for guerilla-style hit-and-run attacks throughout the series.

The team of reformed villains known as the THUNDERBOLTS are being run by Spidey nemesis Norman Osborn on probationary rehabilitation and are part of the Central Park battle.
Norman Osborn takes the killshot and brings down the Queen!
The heroes are disgraced for their failure to avert the crisis and Osborn is declared the savior of Earth becoming the new head of SHIELD and leader of the Dark Avengers ushering in the era of THE DARK REIGN!
The impact of the Dark Reign was felt for several years and even resulted in a shadow Illuminati called THE CABAL which included Osborn, Doctor Doom, Lady Loki, Emma Frost, Namor and The Hood.
"Secret Invasion" is one of Marvel's greatest events rife with paranoia and betrayal. Feige better not screw this one up.

I'm bummed we lost Maria...but, I hope this tells us that sh*t is gonna get real in the MCU.
As far as whether Ross is "still on the run", I don't think we can really say for sure if that's the case. It's entirely possible that he's been a Skrull the entire time we've known him, and that the real Ross has been a Skrull prisoner that whole time. He was pretty antagonistic in Civil War, and Zemo's plans had several points where it was mysteriously convenient that they worked. And then Ross cozied up to the key political figures of Wakanda - the most powerful nation on earth. And he's deeply connected in the CIA. All of these are things a Skrull agent may have been interested in.
I have a feeling we'll get an answer in this series about how long Ross was a Skrull, and find out that Val and a few others in that orbit are also Skrulls.
1. Time travel is not bad storytelling in and of itself. It can be AWESOME storytelling. 2. Nick Fury has faked his death MANY times in the comics, so him doing it once in Winter Soldier is just in keeping with that character. It got to the point in the comics that when he did actually die, no one believed it 'cause he always had contingency plans on top of contingency plans. Oh, and I'm positive Maria Hill is dead. There's no opening for a fake out. They're showing you quickly the severity of the stakes.

Between the Ross fake-out death in the beginning and Cobie Smulders not being listed in the opening credits, I had a bad feeling about the fate of Maria Hill. Stakes established. 😢
They make a point of showing and saying that Fury is weak. Maria Hill doubts him in public with a skrull in the room. That skrull then takes out Maria because she is the real threat. Seems to me like Fury needs everyone to think Maria is dead so she can help from the shadows (or SABRE). I refuse to believe that Maria Hill would be taken out with a single non-lethal gutshot.
I mean special guest star means she’s here for one episodes soooo unless we see otherwise in this show itself that it was a decoy/lie she’s likely dead. She’s just a human after all, even if we’ve known her forever

I don't think Maria Hill died. I also don't know anything about gun wounds, but dying soon after a gun shot wound to the stomach does not seem immediately fatal. Perhaps she went into shock?

Killing Maria was probably Gravik's biggest mistake. Going forward, Fury is gonna de-escalate the hell out of the situation and he'll imprison, catch or kill Gravik with Talos help. Badguys should know since 2012 when Coulson was murdered by Loki .... you make it personal, you're gonna make an enemy out of someone you don't want to be an enemy of. In Loki's case, it was the Avengers after Coulson's death.
In this case ...... oh, boy, Fury's is coming for Gravik's blood in a really big way. The eyepatch is definitely coming back and so is the dark trenchcoat after Fury and Talos burn a candle for Maria.
They established the stakes pretty clearly early on, Gravik is a REAL threat to a lot of humans, and probably a few Skrulls as well (if Talos still has people in his community still loyal to him and Fury).
But i think this time, Maria HIll really is dead.
This is another Marvel masterpiece. Anyone could be a Skrull and you never know who is.

So, watched it last night. But didn't realize until watching your reaction that Giah was played by Emilia Clarke. In my defense, i only watched GoT until the Red Wedding before I was like 'not for me, this is just a show where they will keep killing the puppies'.
I expected more from Prescod, since I watched a show the actor starred in about murder in the Arctic Circle (Fortitude). But Marvel is good at getting good actors for small arcs.
Also, the dude playing Gravik (kingsey ben-adir). I really like him because of other stuff I've seen him in.

I try to see both sides, but this is like killing everyone in a city because someone there bullied you. Suspension of disbelief is difficult.
I don’t know if music is a thing you do or even plan on doing, but someone you might like doing is NF, and the NF Journey. It’s not something to take lightly, it is very emotional and very hard. And also, you should ABSOLUTELY watch The Avatar the Last Airbender series!

The plot on top of plot on top of plot, that IS possible, is something that could be really exciting to watch.
I already am suspecting different people. I think Rhodie is a Skrull trying to cast doubt on Fury. Don't think the President is (would be hard to replace with SecServ around). Don't know if that was actually Gaia or was at one point, and wasn't at the other.
Curious how they'll introduce the Super Skrull.

This show is already so much better than the "source material" from which they took little more than the name.
The “source material” was a good story, this is just a D+ attempt at an espionage thriller with Fury second guessing himself while others try to call him out for being old/useless, etc.

The Skrull story always introduced completely different than in the comics so you wouldn’t get spoiled.
Maybe they'll bring her back with some convenient Marvel reason, just like agent Colson after he got killed in Avengers #1.

I think you're right to suspect everyone might be a Skrull. That's the classic Skrull approach, which ere usually a transparent way to retcon whenever a guest writer went too far astray.

I think Sharon Carter, the powerbroker from TFATWS will turn out to be a skrull.
As long as its a good story, this series should be okay, but I feel like this show's purpose is just to create a reason for the old, the tired, the traumatized to be replaced by a younger crowd. There was a lot of effort put into mentioning age, show aches and pains, losing fights like they can't keep up with the younger generation.
Fury has never been a main character so this shows purpose being what you say wouldn't make sense bc they didn't need this show to do that

Lots of questions at the end of first episode... i think it will be a good show... i hope they won't screw the ending like they do quite often...
I hope on a miracle and they bring in Daisy Johnson, but that is a longshot and if so very hush hush.
I don't mind a fake-out death in something like this because the entire point of the story is to make you unsure what's really going on with layers of deception. So is Hill another Coulson to motivate Fury, or is Hill now off the enemy's radar and can operate more freely? The very fact that they did this move in Winter Soldier gives it precedence. It certainly seems like there was somebody feeding them information on and Talos, so maybe they needed Hill unwatched to dig into that. That said, I don't off hand know how they would have arranged her apparent death.
One thing I would like to see brought back from Winter Soldier is the electronic disguise mask that Natasha wore to fool Pierce. It'd be nice to see Fury's team pull one over on the Skrulls with their own tricks.
Finally, speaking of the Skrulls, I like their set up here. Instead of being generic invading evil aliens their personal connections to humans and the fact that they're obviously not all bad makes them far more interesting than your average Independence Day threat. And there's such a betrayal in their actions, failures of humans or not... Humans allied with them, took them in, and Earth pretty much saved half the population of the universe... and now they're going to wipe us out? I wonder how the rest of the galaxy would take that.
I think you would like a new series that I started watching.its called The Lazarus project.they have the authority to reset the world when things become cataclysmic

I'm with you: I'm pissed that they killed Hill. Well... they showed her lifeless body bleeding out. But, I've seen that before. I'm not giving up hope just yet. Perhaps she's only 'Mostly' dead.
So far, it's giving me a Flag Smasher vibe. I'll have to wait and see where they take it.

Man, that opening sequence had some people *piiiiissed*. Marvel used AI to generate a lot of it, so you can imagine it set off a few folks who were already concerned about creators losing jobs to AI.
Someone has to program the ai so there’s still a job involved. And typically has no opening sequence like it, so its a first and was not taking jobs away from people that did similar before.
You mean like the 190 visual artists credited for the series? "Marvel" didn't use AI lol Marvel isn't a sentient being. The artists did, either of their own idea or because the director had an idea. It's a machine with many parts, not one omniscient being.
This is why I prefer the animated universe they don't drag on like the cinematic universes do I highly recommend the DCAU and the 90's Marvel Animated Universe they are masterpieces and they are way better than the cinematic universes in my opinion

very much share your anger about Maria. I feel like we never got to see more than little snippets of her in action here and there, and she's basically Fury's right hand. and it feels like they killed her off just to be an emotional catalyst for Fury. at least Natasha went out on her own terms, trying to do something heroic. but I guess that's too much to expect for Maria Hill.

For me, the biggest moment of suspense was Gravik succeeding his plan and shooting Maria while disgusting himself as Nick. However, my favorite part was Gi’ah pulling herself together to warn her father.
Looking at Talos in human form, I remember that his actor Ben Mendelsohn was Orson Krennic in Rogue One.

No need to get upset with the story before the story is even told. I have no idea where this is going since MCU is so different from the comics. This is on a different track than Secret Invasion was in the comics. Now one thing to prepare you for if they do follow the basic story telling method of the comics you will have to be prepared for the entire MCU to be erased and reset. I am sure at one point they will do this because actors will have aged out and they will want to retell some core Marvel stories. In the comics the universe has reset around 7 times. In DC it is also a handful of resets. That is how they have kept these comic characters around for so long. So time resets or characters coming back is a norm for the comic book world. Personally I hope they build new stories but sooner or later all character will be restarted for other generations of viewers.
