  • In today's video, I'll be discussing Starbounds updates since its full release in 2016.
I really do enjoy Starbound, and like I mention at the very end of the video. Not every game has to be replayed 50 times! I seriously can't wait for Chucklefish's Wizard game though.

I feel you chippy, imo starbound was in this best state during the beta early beta phase, back then, you crafted items to summon the next tier of boss, and I liked that the most, cause starbound wasn't so liner then, back then it was a lot more like Terraria, you did what you wanted when you wanted and the game ended when you wanted it to, now its "go here, do this, then go here do that, and then tada you win" and after that win, there's no feel to do anything more, there's no reason do anything more

I also enjoyed the beta more than the finished game but for a different reason. I really liked the warmth system, where areas were hot or cold planets that you had to accommodate for that. At early game you could go to snowy planets, but you'd need to stay indoors or right next to fires to prevent yourself from freezing. If you were out in a blizzard you'd freeze really fast and you'd need to get indoors quickly. Naturally, this could be prevented if you had warmer clothes, so if you had any you'd need to wear them and sacrifice your armor protection to move around. This also occurred as an organic way of preventing early game players from to digging too deep into the core. When on desert planets you could fare just fine on the surface with little padding, but after you dug too deep into the planets core it'd get really cold really fast. The beta game play felt much more immersive than it is at current, it felt like you were actually visiting planets and surviving on them.

Terraria works because whatever story it has is shoved WAY into the background, almost to the point of nonexistence, and the player's goals just coincidentally align with the story.
Starbound forces the player to follow a storyline, making the player come to the bosses after spending a gruesome amount of time scanning stuff.
Terraria, like minecraft, just dumps you in the world and says good luck.

They even went out of their way to remove any possibilities to build an autofarm and made traps non-mineable so pretty much everything you build that isn't an airlock is purely cosmetic.
Meanwhile in terraria, you are required to build your own boss arena, you can even automate the whole battle with traps and teleporters and have the tools to build a whole slew of contraptions to make life easier.

It was literally flying and looting, tf u talking about

    • @Crazykidthree33
      @Crazykidthree33 5 років тому +40

He's talking about the fact that before every boss you need to scan things when they're plenty of more interesting things in the game they could be taking advantage of in place of these repetitive search and scan mission. Tl;dr: Add more ways to complete the search and scan missions. They feel like filler, not progress. Also, give in-game tips on what gear I should aim for before going to face the boss instead of a vague "this will be difficult" message.
In full, this is my thoughts:
The beginning of Starbound is interesting because it gives you two ways to get the core fragments. You can either kill the beast and collect the free cores in the abandoned mineshaft or delve deep into the planet to mine the fragments yourself. The beast is quicker to do but the underground holds more an better loot, so whichever you choose is entirely your decision and will bring a bit of variety to each new playthrough.
However, this is the only time Starbound does this with its story missions. From then on out you're just flying around scanning random junk that usually amounts to Esther giving generic "Oh, of course, this was the answer all along!" and various other ways to say basically the same thing. Doesn't matter what things you scan, or sometimes even the race it belongs to, the experience doing it will feel identical to the first time you've done it. Just some more specific dialog is all I ask for.
This problem is also accentuated with the fact that you can just ignore the quest missions in the pursuit for the biggest stats since they're not locked behind story once you can travel through space. You can exit the starting planet and ignore the quests until you've got tier 6 gear. Once you've gotten that, all that's left is the story. That means you'll be facing the scan things, then boss fight back-to-back 5 times. It's also guaranteed that you'll be spending more time searching for the race settlement you need than facing the bosses. While you can attribute this to the fault of the player, I'll also mention that the game tells you several times that you'll want to be well equipped to fight bosses but never informs you what tier is modest or even give the slightest hint of when you should reasonably stop.
Honestly, the best way to fix the story issue without making the game more linear is to incorporate several ways in which you can complete the story. Maybe instead of *just* having me scan things in a races town you can also suggest that I can also go out and find a hostile dungeon and find a quest specific item, that will only spawn if the mission is active, for Esther to study herself. Nothing is taken from the game and it's not a huge overhaul for the story as it is now. All I did was give another option, but that single addition can make all the difference in making sequential playthroughs of the game more enjoyable because there's a chance you can find something different.
To this day I've never completed Starbound's story. Yet, I've made tier 6 armor, unlocked all the tech, and fully upgraded my ship and it's entirely because it's the least linear parts of the game and feels more worth my time doing rather than saving the universe.

You don't have to, but they are there. In order to complete the story you need to scan shit, fight boss, then repeat four more times. It's easily the worst part of the game. And sure, you could ignore the story entirely, but then what's the point of building up your equipment if you're not going to use it on something more challenging than basic monsters? Yeah, I know what you mean Chippy, the re-playability is pretty non existent. I thought that the gameplay would be different dependent on what species you were. Maybe how NPCs talked to you, or maybe different movement style. Just some deviation in some way so it would make a difference. It's a great game, but certainly not as malleable as games like Terraria where you're free to play how you like and at a pace you like. Even a more relaxed game like Stardew Valley is a game that you can play the way you like and at a pace you like that's fun for you. Anyway, great video!

I don't like beating the bosses, in fact I've beaten two or three and left it at that... I just like colonizing, making fun communities and exploring. The collections can be fun too, maybe a museum or science center would be a fun build.

I feel like a lot of these points also apply to vanilla Terraria. (Just throwing that game out cause that's kinda what you're known for) especially the point about getting a fancy new sword at the end but not really having anything to use it on. The absolutely final tier of armor in Terraria requires bars you get from the Moon-lord, but what's the point when you think about it? So you can fight the Moon-lord better?
On a side note, the story in Starbound is 100% optional. There's really nothing stopping you from saying "Don't care about Earth, gonna go be a space Pirate!" And you can still get to the final tier of armor and weapons without ever having done any of the missions with the exception of the intro mission (mining facility is required to fix your ship). Can't really say that about other 2D Sandbox games as most gateway progress behind the defeat of a specific boss.
None the less, still hyped for 1.4 of Starbound and 1.3 of Terraria, lots of fun things to look forward to.

I'd rather that they'd improve the story quests rather than leave me to ignore them. I want to fight the bosses, but god do those scanning missions suck. The least they could do is provide unique dialog for every item scanned so at least that can be interesting or give more abundance to these items. Right now, most items just have Esther give a vague statement along the lines of, "Very interesting..." and the only places worth your time during these quests are the race's village because anywhere else won't give you anything near as much as you need to scan. This isn't my ideal fix, but I'd settle for it. I'd rather that they give more options than just scanning furniture to complete the quests so whichever I stumble across first is what I do.

Sure, but Starbound is such a pain to play, with the characters being 4 blocks tall, there's quite a bit of micromanagement going (too many blocks to deal with, inventory is basically always full, especially like halfway through the game and onward), it's really painful to build a base, especially anything visually appealing, what to use that base for, storage? That's kinda it, build a farm but that'll supply you til you finish. What's left in the game? A story that is repetitive and it just asks you to visit planets, there's really no story. The ruin destroyed earth, you find relics visiting various planets, defeat ruin, done. That's the only thing this game really has going for it and it doesn't exist, just has lost potential. I've always had this notion that the game is supposed to have some kinda of minimal voice acting.
Only thing that keeps me to the game is because character creation, music pack mods and various mods that make me happy to even see exist, (specifically Jak and Daxter morphguns/mechs and such)

The game itself is very beautiful and it deserves its props for being aesthetically pleasing. But as far as gameplay, I expected more. Once you get your epps and upgrades, you basically can go anywhere at any time and don’t face any kind of weather or ecological challenges considering each system has their own set of climates. I had high hopes considering how hard it was to understand the gameplay and initial planets you explore but after, everything felt self explanatory and didn’t have much challenge

Between Terraria and Starbound, my hour count is way bigger in terraria, but at the same time I've owned that game far longer than starbound.
However a BIG chunk of the starbound playtime happened because after I beat the final boss I just kinda tried to explore more planets and ultimately ended up running out of things to do, there are no more goals, so I started modding went all out and installed frackin universe, which adds a lot of things to do and upgrade to the game, and that's why I got a lot more mileage out of it, however Terraria I always had a goal, there was always one more boss to fight, and frankly I've never beaten the moon lord solo, the only time I've beaten him was with a squad of *FIVE* people. In terms of base games, Starbound seems bigger but Terraria is far more replayable imo.
I do love my avian character in starbound tho, so that's also a plus.

the problem with starbound is for me or probly for some who played this game in Alpha/beta stage:
    1. Removed content from older beta stage that make it so good .
    2. The races are useless by not having racial stats and weapons basically pointless what race u are.
    3. A pointless story/linear that u can rush it very fast and not very big deal with a chosen one story "clise" that u could be with every race that for me does not.
    4. no random unique generated monster/planets .
this game could have some more potential and they wasted so many years for nothing (only if they bring older content back that made starbound good) but yeah i don't what was in their minds in that moment of 1.0 release but is not me to judge
starbound need to be an exploration adventure game now its just a simple game that u play once and that's it not felling to coming back since 1.0 did to this game.
hope they will bring some big updates by adding old stuff back or at least some thing that made it STARBOUND "Adventure ,Exploration ,Sandbox game" not pointless updates that make u bored and forgetting that this game even exist after u play once.

Terraria and Minecraft both stand as very solid and enjoyable games without mods, with the mods only really adding additional enjoyment. Starbound is very hard for me to enjoy because it relies too much on a very bland exploration system leaving building to be EXTREMELY basic and making it hard to obtain even simple fruniture items like bookcases or fireplaces until late into the game, or stealing from NPC settlements who will kill you if you do it too much.

Warning, Big rant ahead: I've had this opinion for awhile and never got to share it so I kinda just burst.
see i find the lack of diversity in the randomly generated quests and structures an issue, like there are 3 quests: Give somebody item A, Bring me this item, Or Go someplace and kill something maybe bring a person back with you.
i wish there were more randomly generated structures that weren't 1 of 4 things: hostile base, village or town, traders camp, abandoned or ruined
i also really with they made the story better.
i HATE that its: scan, boss, scan, boss, scan, boss, scan, boss, scan, boss, final boss.
i do wish they had other objectives to get you to a boss rather then just scanning, i also wish they weren't all large structures with a boss at the end. The only deviation of that is the Glitch boss one which i really liked because it was a defend mission... that you couldn't lose.
I wish some of the relics were guarded by a legion instead of a single entity, i also wish there was more of a punishment for dying. like having to restart the level instead of respawning at one of those save pads. it really lowered the difficulty of bosses,
and most of all I HATE how damn easy it is to kill the final boss. it has 3 maybe 4 attacks; which is pathetic, and if you just horded shurikens and mass produced bandages you just stand in one spot alternating spam left clicking and a couple right clicks. The final boss is so underwhelming and all the difficulty is just getting to the boss. and the fight is so bland and tasteless, no intensity, the arena doesn't change, the boss doesn't have multiple forms, its minions aren't all that unique, its attacks are hella telegraphed and easy to dodge. Its just absolutely pathetic.
most of the time the game feels half finished and it requires mods to be enjoyable, and even then it isn't that fun.

I actually had a lot of fun with this game, until I reached a point where progress ground to a halt. I wanted to get a grappling hook to exploration better because the ropes I had were awful, so I looked up how to get it and saw the long list of things I needed to get. So I went and did them. It was actually really fun. A friend helped me out and we had mods so I turned myself into a wyvern femboy with a fox tail. I slowly upgraded my crafting stations, built a house for my fox maid to keep tidy, got massive elemental buffalos, then finally got my hook. It was sublime using that. I went and got all the backpack upgrades so I could explore all the worlds, and this is where it stopped being fun. Sure I could’ve done the story, but scanning stuff sounded really uninteresting. I got no new weapons, no more upgrades. I had the final upgrades for my stations, and made rather good armor. And all of that was so time consuming that I’m hesitant to start again even with Frackin Universe. Perhaps I’m just too much of a Terraria player.

Maybe they could make a new colony update that adds more blocks like some coloured ones for pixel art and npc's like the tailor (or however it's called) so clothing from different races isn't as rare. The update could add a new colony system: When you make your first couple of homes the background could feature some houses. When the player expands his colony, more homes will appear in the background. You could stack homes and the game detects it as a tower. Depending on the blocks used and types of npc's that live in your mansion/house/tower the style of the buildings in the background could change. Tall glitch buildings could make the background feature Rapunzel styled towers or evil towers depending on block colour. Mansion shapes spawn castles and house shapes spawn smaller peasant homes in the background, while a human tower could give you a skyscraper, mansions spawn schools, museums or just mansions, etc. The different races and block pallettes make differently themed buildings. Maybe there could be an architect npc that gives you building blocks/quests/blueprints and rewards you for making a bigger colony. The background buildings could shift if you walk into a differently styled area of your colony. The background styles could be: stone age, (mostly floran and fenerox) Scottland of course, (for the alpaca's) jungle/temple, (for the avians) city, future utopia or distopia, etc. But my two favourites are: retro future (cool future buildings on the ground and higher up you could see some of those awesome curvy floating buildings. And ancient/modern/future Japan. Why Japan and not China or Korea? Because Japan is the only one of those who actually built a lot of taller buildings... and they have torii's... those things are cool... But these ideas could attract some new players and bring back old ones. If can make a proper rewarding system with this, it could give the game a lot more replayability!

I see where you're coming from on this. Starbound has been an incredible game with some very interesting ideas and content, and hopefully this next update will bring something big. Perhaps a revamp of sidequests to make the game feel more immersive. Perhaps an overhaul of dungeon, monster, and world variation. Who knows. Personally I feel like if sidequests had more depth to them, and there was more to them than "Bring me some ore, turn it into an ingot, ok you're done", then It would be more fun... Like, say, A sidequest where a group of scouts are trying to infiltrate this labratory, only to find that the expariments had broken out and have started causing big trouble, or perhaps A small-scale civil war is going on, and you can either choose to fight for one side, or find some kind of way to peacefully negotiate it out. The story is way too linear and formulaic with the player scanning stuff the exact same way ten times. Overall though, I still love the game, and feel it really just boils down to personal preference as to its replayability. Some like terraria more because of its combat, others like the peaceful exploration of starbound. The way I keep starbound enjoyable is first of all to mod the living hell out of it, but mostly I come up with my own story and sort of act it out and elaborate on the amazing, potential-rich concepts that starbound gives me. I find inspiration for stories and characters throughout the game, and I’ve pretty much just modified the starbound lore and universe in my head to be way cooler and fleshed out than it actually is.
The game has so much potential in a lot of individual story elements, but because of the constant change in development/plot directions, they can’t take advantage of any of them without another complete story overhaul, which would take hundreds of new assets and a lot of effort that quite honestly just won’t be worth it. I mean, look at the Letheia corporation lore. A huge, galaxy-wide conglomerate thing that’s lowkey really corrupted. They have to cover up every single erchius infection/breakout situation by just leaving all the miners on the moon to die. That’s such an interesting concept, and I would be way more invested in playing through a whole game where I just uncover the secrets of Letheia and Erchius infections and shit like that. But after that Erchius mining facility mission, the Letheia corporation, Erchius infections, mutants, the Erchius horror? None of that is mentioned or even referenced ever again in the entire fuckin game, outside of mining for fuel with the dumbass ghosts. The Ruin could be turned into an escaped and fully grown Erchius Horror, but the two things are just completely unrelated and never come into contact with each other.
The problem with Starbound and it’s story is inconsistency and the inability to actually stick with anything. Each mission could have its own full game-length storyline (The Apex rebellion against the Miniknog, the Erchius infections and Letheia’s corrupt practices, the ancient Ruin and the cultists, the Floran-Hylotl war) but instead of that, they just half-ass a bunch of storylines in one game, and use the “we need an artifact from every race!” bullshit as an excuse. Most players don’t want to only get a glimpse of a story and then have to come up with the rest themselves, but to appreciate the starbound unverse and/or get any enjoyment out of it, that’s exactly what you have to do. I’ve always had an interest in futuristic space travel and colonization of planets and shit, i’ve always found zombie/alien infection type stuff (the flood from halo for example) very interesting, so i’m willing to do that, but most players don’t have the time, the energy, or the devotion to think about all of that stuff extensively enough for it to be appreciated or enjoyed.
There are SO many more things wrong with the game and the plot that need to be fixed for Starbound to not be almost a complete joke. Why do we only see the Ruin destroy one planet? Why do only a couple NPC’s mention the destruction of Earth? What happened to the rest of the Protectors? Why is there no fucking news or media in a galaxy hundreds of years into the future? Starbound tried to be too many things at once and became a jumbled mess of like 3 different types of game and therefore fails at being particularly good at anything (and yes, an RPG-Sandbox-Great campaign would be an AWESOME combination of game elements if it was actually done right). The reason Terraria can just put whatever the fuck it wants in the game is because it doesn’t try to explain anything or force a storyline. You just get dropped into the game and go, no introduction, no backstory, nothing. Because of that, the elements that are really good and fun to play with such as combat, can be focused on. This is all really sad considering how good it COULD be if Chucklefish just focused on one thing and got it done right. There could even be a separate story and sandbox mode in the very far-off future if at all, where we could have both a good story AND a good sandbox game, but let’s be honest, that’s just wishful thinking.

I've played for about 100 hours in the alpha-early beta build and the game kinda stopped being interesting for me anymore, cuz like you've said, it's way too linear to be a good re-playable sandbox type game.
You can't really do a class playthrough, there's not enough loot from bosses and etc.
So I've played 166 hours of starbound in total and most of these hours were spent in the early builds and as Chucklefish didn't really add that much with the release the game became really boring for me.

aw man can't wait for 1.4. I don't play right now either, but I've had tons of fun doing, well, non-vanilla stuff that kept me playing for months longer than I could have! Tons of mods, role-play, and most importantly, putting my mind to building stuff on terraformed barren planets for said role-play (or just for fun and sense of accomplishment). With blocks and furniture from mods, building becomes way more interesting, plus you can challenge yourself to build them without the use of admin mode and stuff.
I guess a lot of my enjoyment also came from being able to play together with a friend, though, so there's that. doing things like hardcore challenges is way better with other people, that's for sure

Now see, a lot of folks in the comments here are going "the game was better when it didn't have a story", and while I see where it is they're coming from...I don't know, the story aspect is one of the things I like most about Starbound. I haven't been around since the beta so I may not have room to talk, but that's my two cents on it, it kind of sets it apart from Terraria in what I feel is a good way. Though I do agree with you that it messes a bit with the replayability, the game has quite a few flaws, and the scanning stuff quests are quite tedious. I enjoy the game, or I did when I was playing regularly, but I understand why someone wouldn't. Perhaps if there were more storyline quests than "scan stuff", or the random quests were more interesting, or there were sidequests to do.
I guess with this game, things are just locked behind progression, while in Terraria, the progression is still pretty similar but you can technically do any thing at any time.

think what could bring me into the game is something like cross planetary side quests, new main quest lines and new story characters to interact with. the bounty system sounded like a good idea but it would have to be done in a way that gave life to these ideas, like being an infinite side quest chain or having its own story line to work out.

I felt like Starbound put way too much emphasis on content over quality, especially compared to Terraria.
The planets are plentiful but they are mostly the same, the enemies are interesting early on but later on become very similiar, the scan quests are just an awful way to stretch out the game (thank god for mods that remove them), the sidequests which you have to usually have to do for these missions also are either fetch quests or "go there, kill that", which would fun if movement was more interesting, scaling mountains faster, fall damage more lenient and combat actually good. The game often lagged for me even on single player, said combat usually resorted to shoot enemy, retreat, shoot again or move in and spam attack (to be fair, that's how you dealt with most encounters in Terraria, but at least the enemies were tougher and had ways to circumvent said movement, like passing through walls, quickly moving near you while giving you some time to react like Mimics or Turtles, that one worm from the orange celestial tower) mining always felt kind of slow, mostly because there is a big lack of large open caverns like Terraria and underground buildings being kind of rare, uninteresting and having the most usual loot there is, and well, I could just go on and on. The movement sucks, the usual walk is okay but from the dash skills the only one worth using is sprint because the others are bad (and in fact detrimental, if anyone saw PBG's Starbound Hardcore or just played for yourself you'd know), the jump skills are ok, and morph ball was fun, but those are about it. I guess you get cars, but you need so many pixels it's not until really far into the game (and I only got to try them then I was playing with console commands with a friend because I couldn't be bothered)
Also, weapon generation, which is pretty much one of the main mechanics is ok at best. Melee weapons are mostly okay when it comes to main attacks, but their specials are usually bad, and guns have all mostly the same main attack, but sometimes interesting specials. They should way more uniques in this game, the boss weapons were cool to mess around with.
The only good parts were the dungeons, which have mediocre combat but have some more loot and are bigger than towns or other structures, and bosses. I especially loved the Astra Nox fight, it was tough as balls but it was fair, you could probably flawless it with just a bit of focus and it was fast paced compared to the rest of the game (that said, I stopped playing after the Avian temple boss, and everytime I play this game I stop after the first one just because of how boring the quests later are. I think there are like 3 bosses afterwards, I saw them and they looked pretty good but I'll probably never bother)
Then you have Terraria, which has a TON of movement options from mounts to wall jumping, sprinting, dashing with a shield, wings, different types of bonus jumps and hovering, teleportation, minecarts and with a mod even rocket jumping, (mostly because unlike Starbound the engine seems to be a lot more simple and less physics oriented) a lot of the weapons feel unique, especially magic spells, the bosses are slightly worse in my opinion but are not pushovers and you can build arenas for them like a proper sandbox, and NPCs are actually worth a damn, while letting you build a house for one in like a minute at most so you don't waste time.
Oh, and most importantly progression isn't tied to equipment checks and upgrading your ship by farming a specific item by visiting like 3 different planets, with the exception of maybe Wall of Flesh or Plantera which aren't that bad anyways. (unless they removed those from last time I played)
Starbound's prioritisation of content became especially evident to me when they added fossils. What are those even for besides decorations? Why have a whole mini-game dedicated to them? I mean, said mini-game is really cool, but still, why only decorations?

    • @baluar46
      @baluar46 5 років тому +1

This is pretty much how I feel about the game. There's a million things to do in Starbound, but they all feel so *disconnected* from one another, and they all feel pretty samey. Terraria also has a lot of things to do, but they all kind of build off of one another. In Starbound you're expected to do things for their own sake, while Terraria rewards you for trying to do new stuff.
And Terraria is honestly easier to get back into. Yeah, while playing Terraria I never quite felt as immersed as I did in Starbound exploring new planets for the first time, taking in their sheer expanse and the diversity of biomes and structures and people and stuff. But the gameplay itself is just less rewarding. There's less stuff to try out. Starbound may have more content, total, but Terraria has content where it counts.

    • @cezarydudkiewicz2990
      @cezarydudkiewicz2990 5 років тому

@Stanky Tree Well that's what I was trying to say I don't like, I don't just want more diversity, I want everything to be more unique and well designed. The general structure of the world, enemies and biomes of Terraria is the same, but it works because every area just is designed well and unique. I play differently when exploring the jungle than when I progress through hell or dungeon. I guess these special attacks could probably improve the enemies (since they usually do nothing in vanilla), but it could also become as unpolished as the random weapon generation. Even if it works, that's only one of the many core elements of the game that need tweaking like or weapons, or just overhauled all together. (Like the dash gadgets or sidequests)

One thing that kept me playing Starbound for a good while, though it was still on my first character, was just... Building, collecting. I like stockpiling mass amounts of money and resources in these sorts of games, and in other games like Cataclysm DDA and whatnot. Getting my own space station, building a mock ship-yard on a barren planet, making an SCP containment sort of place on that same planet for all of the wacky randomly generated monsters I found (even better with a mod for extra monster parts).

Every time I find a new structure or what not, I check around for cool props and decorations, scan a bit here and there in the meantime, and I build a lot of structures n project ( for example I'm busy making a giant vault à la Fallout rn lol ) , but I do completely get your point n I agree. I completed the story on 2 characters now and w/ my second one, after beating it, I basically just don't play that save anymore, so it's very understandable what you're saying.

I actually find myself playing Starbound more than Terraria these days. The modding community is amazing. Even without mods, the vanilla Starbound story campaign is little more than a glorified tutorial that you have to get out of the way to actually "play the game" (and there are even mods to remove the campaign and open up a true sandbox experience).
Case in point: I've gotten the main story out of the way, and I am currently roleplaying a veteran, semi-retired Protector who is constructing an interplanetary seed vault (using a mod that allows the creation of a workstation that extracts seeds and saplings from both vanilla and modded crops), as well as a vineyard and winemaking studio on a nearby lush moon (using a mod that allows the creation of alcoholic drinks).
I also prefer building in Starbound, as well ... simply right clicking to make background walls is a hell of a lot more intuitive than having to craft background walls at a crafting station.

I see your points, but i feel theyre stronger on terraria. Sure, theres four classes you can play as (five if you count throwing) but youre facing all the same bosses anyways, and the worlds all feel the same save for what brand of evil you get and the color of your dungeon. The one thing starbound really has over terraria is all the mods tho. While i know tmodloader exists, starbounds had a mod community since its inception pretty much and due to this has some damn good mods to play with.
The updates also feel... less major, imo, in terraria. Sure they dont add much in starbound, but in terraria updates ive seen and played with, theyve maybe added one or two new enemies and maaaaybe a new mechanic.

Now, I've been a fan of Starbound since before it's release in EA back in 2013, and I still LOVE it, I also personally enjoy the mech system, as well as planet travel system, but I definitely agree. There isn't much in terms of mid-game content. The grind gets boring after the fourth character!

The procedural enemy gen I was so excited about in the early development coupled with the idea of exploring different worlds with procedural world gen variations including hazards were what really interested me. I can't really picture it in Terraria, not without an unrealistic amount of work and skill from modders anyway, but man... Imagine building a ship from blocks, discovering new worlds with their own set of procedural gen biomes/enemies/items, while the normal world is more hand-crafted like it currently is*. I loved some of these sci-fi themes, I could totally see a hot planet type where you'd need an Obsidian Pot/Lava Charm etc., maybe a featherfall pot or mount to deal with high gravity, perhaps extreme cold could become a new thing, and radioactive hazards etc. etc.
Some of these planets could be nearly/entirely impossible without the gear that let's you deal with it better, but it'd be even cooler if some were just more challenging but still reasonable without it.

  • @Aderon
    @Aderon 5 років тому

I totally agree with this. There is an overhaul mod called Frackin' Universe that does alleviate some of the problems that the vanilla game has. Specifically, it adds much more in terms of weapon options early on than the base game does, as well as more armor. It still has the base tiers of armor where it's all pretty much the same until tier 5, but the modded armor is much more like Terraria in that each set has its own unique effects, bonuses, and drawbacks to consider. I would caution; however, that it adds so much content that it can be overwhelming at first, because the number of options you have in terms of what gear you build is enormous.
