- This year Re-Logic released the Terraria Undeluxe Edition which finally gives players a legal way to play classic Terraria 1.0.6 in 2024. In this video I want to share my journey through this version and answer the question 'is it just nostalgia?'

#Terraria
Have you played Terraria Undeluxe Edition yet??
best thing ever (real)
Yes, it was awesome
where is it lol
yeah, im quite surprised by how many textures have been left the same, or with very little change since the first editions
No, As I Would Have To Buy The Game Again To Do So.
It's Cinda Annoying How If You Want To Play Older Versions You Have To Either Be On PC Or You Have To Of Not Updated You Game In Ages, I Wish Things Were Different...
"even 1.3, which is 9 years old now"
This brings pain
Fr how is that 9 years old that means ive been playing this game since 7 years old at least
oh my fucking god
This does *not* spark joy...!
6 years for us console players
Idk if mobile had an older version 9 years ago but uh I started in 2015
I remember draining the ocean into hell in this version.
i did that to
You look like you would eat hell... Or uhh Satan at least :)
I did that, but by accident. I was so confused when I went to the ocean after and saw it turned into a desert lol
I did it with my dungeon
For some reason dungeon was generated VERY closely to oceon
It made my dungeon............ interesting
A lot of rooms completely drown in water
Some big rooms i diged was like a little sea
Helps quite a lot for when you are farmin dungeon after golem
Oh yes my friend and me also do this shenanigans...Good Times 😢
I refuse to believe 1.3 is 9 years old.
Same
isnt it 8 years old? mfs always get game release dates wrong. like how people mistake minecraft coming out in june, but it came out in autumn
@@NikoKuehnenope 1.3 released on june 30th 2015, the official wiki says this
You don’t have to nobody is forcing you to
Yo is this a sequel to killing time until journey's end?
In all seriousness it is awesome that Relogic finally added a way to play old terraria. It's cool to see James playin og terraria. Like a time machine
It absolutely is!
@@ChippyGamingTHAT MUST MEAN ITS CLOSE
This is like the Beta 1.7.3 version of Terraria.

It’s funny because GAM is the updates BEFORE Terraria came out, I feel like Terraria has a bit of an impact on Beta 1.8 onwards
@@ChippyGamingI’ve always felt like classic Terraria ended when 1.2 came out
tbh I wish more games had older versions playable, really lets you appreciate how far the game has come
15:40 hol up we just gloss over the fact that the blade of grass used to require a silver sword
That's what I was thinking! Makes me think of Legend of Maxx and the weird sword lore in that.
Molten armor required Gold Armor if im not mistaken, the whole progression was desinged around getting lower tiers and such to get higher tiers, obv today its possible to skip large chunks of ores.
yes! its actually crazy funny because even to this day sometimes I think I need a silver sword when going for BOG. one of those things you get used to after making it alot back in the day
I hope we get Ocram back as an April fools joke
I want Lepus more. It was actually unique with its duplicating (probably needs tweaking so it despawns) but ocram just had EoC AI with lasers.
coping
I hope we get console 1.2 on PC.

This is why I love Re-Logic. They listen to their community and also have a very good sense of humor.
This was the version I originally started on. It feels so good to go back!
same, giant W
my childhood...
same
Good Times childhood..
That's why I felt it was important to include throw items in the ad
I hope they release the old console/mobile version on steam because that would bring back so many of my memories.
Yeeeess! I played the old mobile version. The only three things that bugged me back then were the insanely low drop rates of pretty much any accessory, how hard the twins were simply because you couldn’t see them most of the time since the mobile screen is small (and if you were too close to them you were dead), and the bugs. I had a bug where I couldn’t get souls of night. They‘re a pretty needed crafting material, especially for boss fights, and I spend months grinding for them only to get like, 3. 😅
Other than that I loved 2.0! We had keymolds and Ocram hehe
Man the memories from the old sprites.
Side note I’d love to have some sort of Metal Gear Solid reference item since in the past they implemented the picture that is a reference to a Yu-Gi-Oh card, hopefully it happens in a new update or hopefully a future one, like a ration food item, a silenced mk 22 that has decent ranged damage and could make NPCs have sleepy bubble quotes above their heads, even a infinity Bandana that lets you shoot forever or the patriot gun, which does the same thing, probably not those last 2 unless they are endgame rare drops.
Accessory that lets you belly crawl to sneak up on enemies would be pretty rad.
the old sun sprite gives me the most nostalgia as its the thing i remember the most from 9 years ago
this is what the game looks like!? the trailers are clearly all false advertising! how has it not been taken off steam yet
the fact that if this wasn't on a terraria channel that i couldn't figure out whether this was satire or not scares me
ahhh the classic gold key for sky island chests, I think that is def something they should consider bringing back, with a boost to sky island items. would make the mystery of them so much better, saying this through my own experience as a kid of going to sky islands after they changed them from normal chests that were unlocked to locked.
seriously brotha, thank you for these videos. Have been playing for probably the exact same amount of time as you and I remember the first time crafting the nights edge after needing molten armor to even beat skeletron in the first place and being so happy when I did. This nostalgia cant be matched by anything.
oh and wow, I had no idea hellstone in this version actually made lava, from my memory it was still the old way where it didnt make lava at all.
i miss a lot of the grind of old terraria, it made all items feel like an achievement and yeah being able to get pre hm wings just seems insane to me
I remember when getting the nights edge felt like the biggest achievement ever to me (although I started in the console equivalent of 1.1)
as much as i like modern terraria i have to say i also miss the grind of old terraria aswell which is why im having a blast playing this. i wish there was a mod for modern terraria that makes the recipes harder, most mods that change recipes make them easier. i can think of only one that does the opposite
@@FunniGlaceon That would actually be sick, i'm kinda surprised no one's done that yet tbh. It would essentially be like how minecraft modpacks have their "expert" versions with insanely cranked up crafting recipes that you need automation for. I would personally love to see a mod like that (athough terraria doesn't have a ton of automation besides mob farms so it'd have to be balanced differently).
I feel like the problem with modded terraria for me is that basically every playthrough feels the same. And no i don't do calamity only. But it basically feels like a boss rush a lot of times because everything is so easy to get, and there's just soo much progression with some of the bigger mods that you kinda want to just get to the next stage asap. A mod focused on difficult recipes and slowing down the game's pace would be such a fantastic contrast to how literally every other mod on mod browser plays. I wish i had the patience to recreate that many recipes , but i don't think i could do it lol.
@@timklafke4712 Yeah honestly its something completely unexplored for terraria modding. i honestly dont even think you need to make alot of the recipes some zenith tier type recipe stuff like molten armor requiring gold armor and jungle armor requiring silver and some gems is really neat and the increased cost of things in general i think adds alot to slowing things down a bit. and i get whatcha mean when it comes to modded playthroughs feeling like boss rushes (though admittidly i do use a few QOL mods) but honestly i kinda feel that way about vanilla aswell. once you get gold armor or some equivalent and good accesories you can just do multiple bosses in a row. because theres nothin else to really do and it doesnt take very long to get that. having now "completed" my playthrough of 1.0 (im still grinding to max my character out) i honestly liked how i had to fight eye of cthulhu and eater of worlds without max hp and optimal armor. it was pretty nice. so honestly it would be cool to have a mod that increased costs. id do it myself but idk how to
@@FunniGlaceon Hmm that’s a fair point, I guess it could be somewhat minimalistic amounts of recipes at least at first. I haven’t actually done any work with developing mod content since like 2016 and even then it was very minimal, so idk if I wanna go down that rabbit hole again lol. But I do believe adding recipes is relatively simple in comparison to everything else in the modding scene. I’m currently playing through the zenith seed with a friend but maybe if I get the chance I’ll look into modding recipes again, it might be kind of fun.
Also yeah I’ve been enjoying the hell out of 1.0 actually. I started originally playing in 1.1 so 1.0 feels even different but also the same as I remember from classic terraria. It’s so much nostalgia but also a lot of fun at the same time. The hardest part for me has been how crazy limited building is in 1.0. You can’t even place two different types of walls next to each other lmao. I saw someone do a playthrough years ago in 1.3 where they tried to collect every single item in the game (literally every item with an item Id) and always wanted to try that and I think the 1.0 version is the perfect start. I’m really hoping they rerelease all the og versions of the game over the next couple of years so I can carry my world through every version. It also would give me the opportunity of achieving pretty much everything each version has to offer by specifically grinding out some of the stuff you wouldn’t normally.
I feel like just having this disappear as a beta is pretty disappointing, so it would be cool if they made a seed that at least changed the world gen to “classic” while keeping everything else the same old 1.4, it would definitely be a nice playthrough for the og players.
love that for april fools they just gave us something we want
About your ending words: I love older versions of terraria because it had much more of an adventure vibe. Of course things were barren but it really felt great discovering loot and so on before the game had so much content it felt crowded. Would love a version or the game with old levels of content but modern features.
eater of worlds has been nerfed since 1.1 and the sky islands are unbalanced, 1 gravitation potion at the start of the game = fledgling wings. i miss the grind of terraria
@@ectono I wouldn't say I miss the grind per se, but I agree that the game just has too many solutions for the same problems. I think part of it is caused by the fact the devs (and the playerbase) don't want you to be able to miss content, so they have to cram everything into a single world with rare exceptions. Game could work really well if a subset of the stuff got into any given world.
I don't like fledgling wings and unlocked chests before skeleton
Past that I think it's fine, I despise early game exploration strictly for the mining speed so... I'd rather have less of that particular grind honestly
@@NoxAevitas fledgling wings are extremely rare nowadays
@@ectono fledgling wings are extremely rare nowadays 1.4.4 made them a 1 in 50 odds iirc.
I'd play the hell out of a re-released 1.2. Back before mobile v1.3 was when I started playing. I remember crying hearing the old ocean music when journey's end came out
why? it's just a worse version of the same game.
@@LetMeGetAUhhh nostalgia
the best part of the clip at 3:50 is that you tried to place dirt but dropped it instead, only to immediately do the same with the wood.
That’s actually really nice that items go to your hot bar, I hate having seeds and random blocks of mud take up half of my half at that I don’t use
Firey great sword is much more of an iconic name than the volcano
Yes let's petition to get it back for 1.4.5!
a long time ago when 1.0.6 came out i actually played it myself, and i could say that is just an amazing game when it just feels like its old, it gives it a good nostalgic feel. (Rest in peace Fiery GreatSword.)
I would love to see for consoles older versions to see Ocram again. That would be a blast from the past
8:28 you know what? I really really miss the orange sky of the old corruption
you would mindlessly walk around and suddenly the sky changes color to orange - you KNOW you're in a dangerous place
isn't there any way to add it back to 1.4? like, I thought of adding a transparent orange to the sky of the corruption backgrounds, but I don't feel it would capture the real feeling
i really miss the intense orange of the corruption aswell. unfortunately i dont think theres a way to add it to modern terraria via texture pack but maybe a mod could do it.
It is beautiful to see, what Terraria managed to become. I remember the ,,good old days" of playing it back then and just vibing.
How’d I not hear about this build
I think a lot of people took the April fools a little too literally and thought it wasn’t real
@@ChippyGaming hm, interesting
"terraria 1.3 is now 9 years old"
i dont even know what to say
I still remember the hype for it. Also the duke fishing update with optic staff was awesome, it solidified my love for the summoner class
Bro I use play it all day long
When I first started playing terraria I was too young to even know what I was doing, like, at all, but I do remember that it was the tutorial world but I never explored it all, my screensaver on the phone i had when i was 10 (maybe younger) was a screenshot of my player in like wooden/iron armour, i have so much nostalgia
I now have the urge to play this version of Terraria, and the main game all over again. Thanks, Chippy.
brings back memories watching Totalbiscuit and Jesse Cox's original terraria series
Isn’t this what you did while waiting for 1.4, if so. Then it’s great to have this type of video back!
Yeah!
i remember spelunkers lighting up ore instead of just revealing them to you, meaning they stayed revealed after the spelunker ran out. they changed that pretty quickly but for some reason old terraria still stuck with me. farming hornets with a lava setup for jungle gear, killing bone serpent with dynamite for a high chance of a sunfury, man it was so different lol
it would be funny if people made mods for Undeluxe Edition lol
Actually, when you set the controls right you can place items directly out of the inventory with a Controller on the Console and Mobile Version.
I'm a relatively new terraria player and I've started my own let's play of this update. I'm happy to see someone else make a video on it so I have a small guide of how to do things!!
Yeah cause you two are the only people to make a video of it.😅😅
Shame this video didn't hit my personal biggest old Terraria nostalgia: the old Magic weapon Starfury. I remember generating a ton of worlds just to get an early gold key to grab it and just shred Eye of Cthulhu.
6:06 hey, at least TNT doesn't destroy stuff since 2019 😁
I love all of these videos. Does Chippy also stream on twitch?
I only stream a few times a year and usually it's on UA-cam!
1.3 being 9 years old is crazy to me...
I remember watching you play 1.2.4 right when that came out as a kid...
frrrr
I'm doing a round of this version myself. My reason was to "get a feel for a slice of history". I didn't get the game for myself until just before the wiring update. But I remember some of the old Let's Play series producers I used to watch did this. And to this day, it's one of my top 3... right up there with RollerCoaster Tycoon, and Stardew Valley. If we include top 5, that also adds Super Mario Sunshine, and the MegaMan Battle Network series.
"which is now nine years old"
i almost threw up
"Ahh yes nostalgia" - little timmy who never even played terraria
Wow 1.3 was 9 years ago, i love that this game has remained in my regular game rotation for longer than a decade❤
god there really are no vicious bunnies or evil goldfish now, what happened?
man this version is really nice though, glad it's on steam now (kinda wanna play 1.1 as well, but whatever)
theyre like, extremely rare. they do exist but like they barely spawn at all its kinda wild
@@FunniGlaceon it's very weird, wonder why
I miss the old look of water candles and hellforges. In my old playthrough I used to collect them
well.. I started Back then in 2011 with specifically that Version of Terraria and NEVER regret a single cent of the 10€ to this day. I LOVE that game
Thanks for the video, it’s so interesting how these games are in first development, it’s so easy to compare.
Bro I remember being so excited for 1.3 when I was little lol. It’s amazing how far terraria has come
I miss this so much 😭
It's crazy how the backgrounds completely changed the game.. Never thought about how good they made it look
I have played this version on Playstation 3 for like 400 Hours when I was like 15 and now I am 22 but that game just felt so calm but also super interesting and I have never found a game again like that and watching this video gives me such a nostalgic feeling
I remember him doing this kind of Video back then to kill time until journey's End 😂
Man... that's my childhood
They should add a setting that would bring the old sprites back like the backgrounds
funny looking eye makes me happy
With the night's edge being the "Zenith" of this version, whenever I played mobile -on much later update- with some friends, the True Night's Edge was basically my status symbol
this version makes me wonder if it could be modded in a way. im sure there was a way back then, since yrimir did a showcase on the reborn mod's three birds 12 years ago
yeah i bet you could get the old mod loader and install omnir's mods (omnir's mods were so awesome)
you probably could mod it yea, honestly i highly doubt it would happen bit it would be really cool to see a modding scene form around terraria undeluxe trying to see what they can make in such an old version
@@FunniGlaceon you should check out omnirs mods they were the shit (and very impressive for something on such an old version of the game!)
@@eltiolavara9 Im also pretty sure thorium existed back then.
I'm going to be 100% I seriously thought you were on either modded Terraria or I'm just dumb, because I saw you quick stack to chests and I never knew that was a thing so I hopped on and. it is so I am dumb and for hundreds of hours on this game have not known quick stacking too chests is a thing something. Thanks man!
played and beat on the same day, i like the limiting factor of not having a goblin tinker, and the progression being different. I did have the surprises of special armors requiring metal armor to craft. I over estimated how hard bosses might be because of the limiting factor. I actually farmed to make a crown just to realize in this version theres no slime crown. This was a fun playthrough, made me not play the same as i always do.
Played since release, never gotten bored.
moon lord? What moon lord? We got sleletron as the final boss.
s s LELE loogo leepe lele
the ocean being the same is wild. i would have thought that they made the ocean its own biome by now, with explorable underwater cave, underwater boss, harpoon weapons etc. that would be so cool
I first played Terraria just a couple months ago, so it's fascinating to see what it was like in the past.
man i cant wait for terraria 1.1 i always appreciate the effort re-logic is going through to make terraria and i hope they will be successful
I'd love to play 1.1 and 1.2 again
I love that sun. God has it really been so long?
this was a super cool april fools. I've been trying to get a group of friends to play this update with me as a fun "look how much has changed" thing. Having little luck getting friends interested unfortunately.
This is a very cool way to say "We appreciate the nostalgia, but you REALLY dont wanna go back there"
It would be really cool if this version or the new version added the exclusive pets back, I miss farming some mother slimes to get a Petri Dish
I love how the devs of terraria are so active in the community
I genuinely need terraria 2 omg we've been talking about Terraria 2 for 12 years, it's crazy
Man, I remember playing this version like 8 y ago, crazy how this game improved to these days
I think Undeluxe is a lot like Minecraft's older updates. The game HAS gotten better, but, there's something in the old version, more than nostalgia, more than just appreciating the new. I think what both of these have in common is that, the world doesn't feel as- crowded? Old MC was empty, and that was part of the appeal, you were the one to build everything, to create your own 'world', the textures were sharper, rougher. In new updates, it feels like everything is everywhere, the world doesn't feel as much of a sandbox as it did, just a survival game, despite there being MORE options. It's like an ice cream store, if you want Ice Cream, and they only have 3 flavors, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry, it's pretty easy to choose just one of them, but, once there's 20, 25, 30 flavors? It's kind of hard to choose, and for me, it's a little frustrating too.
These old versions of these games follow something similar, when you only have so many different blocks, surprisingly, it, doesn't feel as same-ish as you'd expect it to. The fact that the ores are just stone with a tint over it is so different to modern, and yet, it feels right. The Dungeon, Corruption, Jungle, everything that IS there, feels like it's uninhabitable, unexplored. The chests feel like finding valuable loot, rather than just looting from an abandoned underground house. Undeluxe may be a downgrade, but, surprisingly, it feels more like an adventure, a challenge, more like Terraria, than modern Terraria. And that's oddly charming.
This is the version I started on, it's amazing how this game has evolved
Using this to see what I missed in my retro resource pack
i would love to see you do more of these! especially a 1.3 one if they ever release it
im getting flashbacks from killing time until 1.4
BOI i remember now that my first EVER terraria world i spawned in one of those old school sky ilands with normal terrain and then just a million block drop and the game said deal with it.
I remember playing Terraria when it was similar to this. I remember Muramasa being one of the most powerful swords because it was so fast it could butcher eater of worlds with no problems at all
I started making a world and I noticed that is said “Chippy’s mesa” as the name
Seeing hellstone bars, man, nostalgia came back like a rocket
I would love to have a way to freely launch any version of the game just like Minecraft has, but this is an awesome thing to have none the less
I played the OG Terraria "back in the day"
The ocean isn't quite the same. 1.2 added squids for black dye if I remember right but it is pretty similar with the exception of having the choice to fight dukefishron there. Hopefully, the pufferfish will give it some love.
A fantastic game back then, and it's just gotten better and better!
you firstly noticed barrels are cheaper than chests
i firstly noticed barrels exist
"Even 1.3, which is 9 years old" I never felt so much recoil from that statement. NINE years ago!?
i would like to see terraria every vision from begin to newest one so people might get back see what was like to be back in day
This is the game version I started on. Thank you for sharing
Damn, no way I missed it!!!! So cool, 1.0.6 was the first version I started playing from!!!
The patch notes image even has the old steam logo from back in the day on it
I still call it the fiery greatsword (I started playing on the xbox 360 at my friends house until I got an xbox 360)
Oh wow, I forgot about the lack of wall torches
You have to place the water flame candle for it to work, but idk I've only played 1.2 and up starting from the 3ds!
I don't think the April fool's joke was a joke. Like the first time it happened was when duke was added despite being teased as a joke. Gotta love Re-Logic man!
0:44-1:00
Wait a minute I recognize that. That's my first seed i ever used in Terraria...what the heck...
