    I know it's like beating a dead horse: Bolt or Iron 883? I had my buddy jump on and take both for a spin. This was his first time on a Harley and a cruiser. Which do you think he chose in the end? I think you'll be surprised!

    The Yamaha Bolt is just a more beautiful design for me and I really like the Iron 883. But the Bolt has that modern retro balance PERFECTLY down. The design of all the pipes, engine, every element really is so modern, and the coloring is great all blacked out, but all in that classic cruiser shape. I'm so glad bikes have ditched the chrome for the most part, the blackout bikes just look so much better. I'd take the Bolt for looks and price. Obviously HD has the name and the Iron 883 is so badass, but I care less about name than I do the design. Also... turning the Bolt into a Low and Mean style Copper Bolt would be an insanely badass DIY job. That thing looks AMAZING.

But after a few kilometers (Im from germany) I learned to ride it wirhout numb hands so its much more fun.
      Also I just saw a Bolt standing aside yesterday and it turned my neck as much as a 883 would. Maybe even more because you take more time to check if its a sporster or not 😂

    Head shake is a deal-breaker for me. Besides, having owned a purchased new 1994, 883, I'm just in live with the Sporster. I bought mine on my because of all those years of drooling over the bike. Yeah, it's slow, but for me, that's a plus as I don't need the tickets. I do love the single crank-pin v-twin motor with all of its vibrating. I figured that that was the cost of admission. Sitting at a red light at the crosswalk, feet on the pavement, and the entire bike shaking and thumping is a very cool experience. You do need some louder pipes, of course.
    One complaint, though, is those useless mirrors most of the time. Again, the cost of admission for me.

A 6 foot 250lb person isn't going to be as comfortable as a 5 foot 10 inch 170lb person. Build quality on the Sportsters is awesome too. I would like to see him ride a standard Bolt and compare the two. Honest review/opinion. I've had my Bolt for over 3.5 years and hands down it is the best decision I had ever made. Very reliable as I had only changed the tires once and had 3 oil changes. Everything still performs to this. This is a great bike for someone who does not want to pay the "Harley Tax" on parts and the bike itself. Not knocking Harleys as they are nice bikes but I ride with friends who have both 883s and 1200s Sportsters and their maintenance tab is much higher than mine. The only downside is that the aftermarket parts are a bit harder to find than Sportsters. However, I had still managed to get Vance & Hines exhaust, intake, fuelpak, LED headlights, Hagon performance stocks, Baron mini apes, and a warrior fairing/cowl. Really fun bike to own. It is definitely faster than the 883 but a bit slower than the 1200. However, with the proper aftermarket parts and an ECU flash it will bring it a bit closer. At the end of the day it is a well rounded bike.

    The vibration is why the Harley is not a good long distance bike. I have the cruiser bolt and I love her. My first trip, the summer I bought her, was a round trip solo ride from Toronto to Halifax and she did not let me down. It was a really great trip. The only comfort issue was the vintage after market tractor style seat that I thought looked cool, and it totally did, so I sold it and put a mustang seat on...much better:) I rode to South Dakota on my Suzuki with a bunch of Harley dudes and the vibration that they experienced was causing them a lot of issues. In fact they had a chase truck with flatbed trailer so that a bike and rider could take a rest from it. There was a replacement bike on the trailer in case someone’s bike crapped out along way. Excellent organization but a bit of overkill for a bike ride to a bike rally...just my opinion. I will never pay that much money for a culture ride.

      @@ToyMaestro I would say that a comfortable seat is absolutely key AND heated grips. I can’t believe I gave into heated grips after years of calling everyone that had them on their bikes a bunch of ‘you know whats’ lol. If your hands are numb or frozen then you are not completely safe on the road, I figure. They will extend your riding season and you will be more willing to hop on earlier in the day and not be unwilling to ride into late afternoon on cooler spring and autumn days. I did my ride to Halifax and back to Toronto without a wind shield and that was ok but the wind pushed the seam of my jacket into my shoulder joint causing me some discomfort. The wind can cause surprisingly interesting problems as I’m sure you’ve already figured out. Now I have a small adjustable windshield which eliminates wind pressure enough to improve my rides. Per google: When something's visceral, you feel it in your guts. A visceral feeling is intuitive - there might not be a rational explanation, but you feel that you know what's best

    Great video. My wife has the Bolt and she wouldn't swap it for anything even offered to buy a Indian scout bobber but she said no way am I getting rid of my Bolt she has the Cobra straights on it and it sounds amazing for me they suit the shorter rider. The only two things she would like to see on a Bolt is a fuel guage and a smaller air filter the stock one is bulky. I on the other hand have the M109r which is a great bike and I really enjoy riding however Harley has character and soul something that Japanese bikes are lacking saying that though a soulless bike that runs forever is better than a bike with soul sitting in my garage in bits just my opinion.

    I did the same thing about 4 weeks ago. I rode the regular bolt and the 883. The 2018 883 that I rode has that heritage look, while the bolt had the same character but newer vibe to it. Both were blacked out.
    The 883 as you described is hard to pin point the description, it feels like a motorcycle and I loved it. The bolt I rode was smoother and more comfortable to ride to me.
    When it came down to it, I choose the bolt bc of the price, reliability, research, and what it offered.
    I spent $8200 on the bolt that came with a lot more accessories, instead of paying $1100 stocked on the 883. Both great bikes and I am happy with my choice. Stay safe and ride hard 🤙

    In your opinion, would a bolt be a good commuter for a heavy rider switching from a 929RR? I want to get into a more relaxed ride position but commute from San Tan Valley to Mesa. Basically the 24 to the 202 to work and home. My other interest was the iron 1200.

  • @Enakaji
    @Enakaji 4 роки тому +1

    Fun thing is in germany the Bolt, the Iron 883 and the Iron 1200 all cost basically the same with the Bolt list price beeing only a bit cheaper than the two harleys. The Bolt costs 9500 Euro, the Iron 883 is 10600 euro and the Iron 1200 is 11000 Euro. So the Iron 883 doesn't really make much sense over here as for only 400 more you can get the 1200. The Sporster 883 Superlow is actually cheaer than the Iron 883 in Germany, costing 200 Euro less than the Iron.

    Much as been made of the declining sales of H-D but Harley has been here before. In the early 1950s Harley was losing sales to cheap British imports that were fast and light. Harley did two things. They first petitioned to government for tariff protection. That effort failed. The second thing they did was to release the K Model. This was for forerunner of the Sportster. It was a 45 cubic inch, unit construction, flat head engine with suspension on both front and rear. It wasn't fast but it was fast enough to compete with the British offering.

    • @JonsMotoGarage
      @JonsMotoGarage  5 років тому

      Heck yeah! I'm definitely down with the idea of doing something like that. Honestly I just haven't taken the time to sit down and go over the logistics. And frankly, I'm not confident I'd have a good turn out, but I could be underestimating the local viewer base? My only thing is I wouldn't want to do something that turns into one of those crazy group rides through the city where streets are getting shut down and people are running into each other doing wheelies. Lol. A thought I had was to get some subs together and do a ride where we drop toys off for the foster kids, or something along those lines. Turn it into a positive for the community as a whole. (While still doing a wheelie or two of course! Hahahaha).

    • @captainpugwash788
      @captainpugwash788 5 років тому +1

      Jon's Moto Garage true - I hadn’t really thought through the potential for it to get totally out of hand. 😂 Something chill for the community with the odd wheelie sounds right! I think a smaller turnout would actually be a bit more interesting but as you said - hard to know what kind of turn out you would get. Maybe you could use like an event app to set it up (in Australia people use one called eventbrite all the time). That way you could withhold some of the details until folks register online to attend and you would also then at least get an indication of numbers. You put so much time and effort into your channel that it’s probably one of those ideas for latter on, like when you don’t have 10 or so vlogs worth of content queuing up (like you were saying in a vid the other day). Anyway - keep killing it Jon. You’re a legend and deserve everything good that may grow from your channel ✌️👊

    My second bike was a bolt and I've ridden both 883 and a 1250 sportster and feel the Bolt has more to offer. I used to live out in the mountains and the Bolt absolutely shreds. I do agree that there is more limited aftermarket support for the Bolt. I'm on an FXDX these days and I'd still buy a Bolt and build it out to be a bad ass Canyon carver. A little extra tid bit of info is that the Bolt has ceramic lined cylinder walls, which is why there hasn't been a kit to increase the displacement of the Bolts 950.

Metrics on the other hand are smoother and more sophisticated, well made, in the back of my mind I know that it’ll last long. Harleys are easier to work on and after market parts are readily available. But it can also be the same with metrics. Asked a really good mechanic, between Sportster and Bolt, told him I didn't want issues - told me to stay the hell away from the Harley. Called it rustic, with zero technology. Told me you could throw the Yamaha off a second story building and it would still run. Considering base price differences, reliability, and customisation options, seems pretty clear that the Bolt should blow the Harley away if you're really looking for a mean bike on a budget. Like the guy said, they copied the Sportster platform,they just do mechanics better.
