  • A hiatal hernia is when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm muscle. Hiatal hernias may not have symptoms, but they can also cause heartburn & abdominal discomfort. This video may help.
Buy a worksheet with these treatments: www.askdoctorj...
Starting with diaphragmatic breathing can really help pull the hernia back down as well as relax the abdominal area. This can be done in sitting or lying down.
Next are bridges with a hold and a cat/cow or cat/dog. Strengthening is a great way to help prevent the hernia from happening.
Seated, a QL stretch and an upper thoracic sidebend will help lengthen and open up the upper chest area.
Finally, a standing sidebend and deep breathing with arm movements not only help relax the muscles, but they also help lengthen the area to help pull the hernia back down.

I was diagnosed with a sliding HH back in February 2024 after my endoscopy. I was having chest pain, chest pressure, acid reflux, and mimicking a heart attack. I felt miserable but after a month and tons of medications I finally found relief. About a week ago the same pains came back and thought I was having a heart attack or a stroke but the er and my cardiologist said my heart was fine. After realizing that it was my HH I looked online for what to do and I must say it was immediate relief! Thank you so much for the video, it helped me save my sanity and know everything was going to be ok. Everyone suffering from HH you aren’t alone and it will be ok, you just need to find what works for you.

Earlier this year in February was the roughest time for me. I remember randomly getting a tight feeling in my chest and freaking out thinking I was in danger. I ended up going to the emergency room four times from panic attacks because I didn’t know what was going on with me. I ended up being sent to the gastro doctor and I was nervous because I had to get an endoscopy and I did not want to go through that. It ended up being one of the most enlightening times in my life because I discovered how strong I was and that I shouldn’t be afraid of things that go on with my body or health anxiety. I learned it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world, and also to learn I was not in any danger. I have a small sliding hernia and now I am much better. I took pills for my stomach and it gets very uncomfortable sometimes when my hernia irritates my esophagus, but I am much calmer as a person now even when I have issues because I went through my biggest fear and strongest battle, facing things I didn’t think I could and beating my health anxiety PLUS getting a whole endoscopy. For anyone going through this, I pray your hernia heals more and more and we got this! We are in this together and you are NOT alone. ❤

Been to ER 3x and have confirmed with endoscopy I have one. Consultation issues, loss of weight and appetite and they haven’t given me any idea other than heart burn meds and fiber which hurt more than help. While sitting here at the bench alone I kinda realized why not try this exercise and in God’s grace, it helped me breathe a little bit at least it lessens the chest tightening I'm feeling right now.

    Dr Jo,
First of all. Many many thanks for this priceless and amazing exercise for haital hernia.
Few weeks back all of sudden one afternoon my chest had become tight and couldn't breath. It's so severe and went to emergency. They confirmed nothing wrong with heart or lungs and sent me home. My condition not improved. I start eating very small meals rather than my regular meal(a large meal get me the same problem again). My GP said it might be hiatal hernia. Need a surgery. I was is in more stress after hearing this than my actual problem.
Finally, I came to know your video and did the last stretch only 3 times. It's miracle. No pain, no tightness. Amazing. You are real angel for me. It's 4 weeks now I am pretty normal. At the beginning it came back couple of times and I did the only last stretch again (I didn't feel better on all of the other stretches) it's gone
A huge thanks for changing the people lives with your precious knowledge and exercises.

Same here folks. I just had an endoscopy today and found out I have all sorts of goodies going on, which I'm happy to know the cause of my pain finally. I've had so many tests in the past two months. So I have GERD, a very bad hiatal hernia (she stressed very bad), a badly damaged esophageal sphincter, and best of all . . . lots of ulcers in the same area of all this mess. Doctor prescribed me meds for the ulcers, and I've been doing her special probiotics since the last test before this one and I've started to intermittent fast. The intermittent fasting and probiotics have helped to eliminate my pain and now I'm gonna try some of these exercises too. I go back in four weeks for biopsy results - might have H. plyori too and may need antibiotics, yay. Good luck all . . .

Hello... I haven't tried these exercises/stretches yet, but based on my experience: It's always safer to exercise either on an empty stomach or after a light snack/breakfast (think of fruits, bread, or salad)
These are fairly light exercises and can be done after meals, but they involve a lot of stretching and engage the diaphragm through the suggested breathing. If you have a full stomach, you might feel uncomfortable with the weight in your tummy + possible bloat. So I suggest either eating lightly/none at all, or wait for some hours after a meal.
As a general rule, always do exercises at least 2 hours after a meal. If you feel like the food hasn't fully digested yet, try to wait for 3-4 hours and see if that works.
      Hope this helps!

Thank you Dr. Jo for posting this instructional video, for the past two years I've been certain I was dying and it's affected every aspect of my life, health and being. I was convinced it was my heart, Cardiologist says no, the heart is healthy. My GP practically laughed me out of the office accused me of being a hypochondriac, not a single doc ever even mentioned the possibility of a hiatal hernia. Which pisses me off now I've discovered it and have been describing literally all of the symptoms to them.
Last week I had a particularly bad attack, that led to racing heart, anxiety and what feels like a spasming in my diaphragm. I was terrified, then when I belched it was relieved
That led me by chance while searching chest pains after eating I found your video. After one session of stretching it feels somewhat improved today. I see my gastro on Feb 14 hopefully there's a solution, even just knowing exactly what's happening wyell be such a relief . Thank you so much.

Yes, I have a very similar issue and was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. It's not just when running (also when eating large meals and too much caffeine) but that can trigger it. I feel movement near the sternum, something feels like it's "moving up", I get out of breath and feel like I have to lean over. Definitely at first felt like heart issues (ended up in the ER multiple times, but they didn't see anything on the EKG.)

I found out a couple months ago by accident that I have a large hiatal hernia (50% protrusion). My doctor said that surgery is my only hope because it is so large. Will these exercises help at all? Even worse than the reflux is the chronic cough I've developed with it. I'm already trying to watch what I eat. I really don't want surgery if at all possible?

I have a very large hiatal hernia that 5 months ago started triggering severe, excruciating chest pains about once a week. The pain can last up to 25 hours and I have vomited up to 14 times during an episode. But usually I vomit about 6-8 times and it lasts about 10 hours. I went to the ER a month ago because the pain radiated to the left shoulder and jaw. Heart issues were ruled out. No advice on dealing with the pain. It's getting so I can't go anywhere because I never know when there will be a sudden onset of pain and vomiting. I saw a gastroenterologist last week and he is going to schedule me for surgery. My question to you is, would these breathing exercises work for a very large hernia? I also started burping a lot and usually food will come up with each burb. When I'm having a painful episode I realize I cannot burp. I feel like a burp would help relieve some pressure but it just doesn't happen. Also, when I vomit it's just clear liquid and mucus - the food doesn't make it up. I'm worried that my esophagus may have become ulcerated from all the acid refluxing. I have been on a wait list to get an endoscopy since Oct.3 because of the backup due to Covid. I'm worried I won't get the endoscopy anytime soon and I have to have that before surgery can be scheduled. I need to deal with this pain - just need to know if this is what I should concentrate on or maybe search for something different.
