I'm camping out in Manning Park, BC at this moment... I had 2 conversation with 2 people of varying age... Regarding climate change, I asked them to step out of their "life span box" for a moment, and think of time in the expanse of just 10,000 years... Within that time, this very ground you're standing on once was tropical, then there was a global flood, then there was an ice age that was 2-km thick ice sheet, exactly where you're currently standing, and before you arrive, all these ice fields, called glaciers that extended deep in to USA territory retreated and melted away... They are in fact still retreating into the far north and higher mountain ranges... What I want them to take away, is that the climate has changed drastically over not to a long of time span, maybe 5,000-10,000 year time span, and here we are camping in a lush mountainous environment... Is there climate change, of coarse, always has been, but don't let the politicians fear monger you into believing this will happen in 10- 50 years and you will all go extinct if you don't make drastic changes for their political power gain... Thank goodness one of those fear mongers in Canada is just getting ousted as we speak... Sad thing is if we don't speak out, there are many more to take up his mantle of fear mongering, and false narratives regarding climate change... And by the way, those ice fields came and went before humans arrived and any fossil fuels were extracted and consume by combustion engines... So tell them all go take a long hike...

@Scarlet-Bonez Where is a chart that shows the amount of forest covering the Earth during the last thousand years? I dont know if there is more or less now.
That was an argument I first saw by the geologist Bob Carter. He was wrong then and you're wrong now. The "lag" you're referring to doesn't mean what you think it means. In fact the ones who came up with the AGW hypothesis used the feedback of the warming oceans releasing C02 as an example of a "runaway effect" and the mechanism for making the effect of the milankovich cycles more extensive than can be calculated without the addition of the C02 driven greenhouse effect. If you've spent anytime studying the claims of the scientists involved you should pick up on the importance of that to say exactly the opposite of what you're trying to say. Even Lindzen would call you out on your claim. I think it's more than fair to critique the hypothesis based on the complexity of the system and that C02 has been much higher in the past to redirect the fearmongering. Arguing badly without an understanding of the claims only makes those doing it look like fools to the ones who think they're saving us from something. You may not care about that but you'll never be taken seriously by anyone with an understanding of the science. BTW I hate to use "the science" in that context because there is science and there is rhetoric on both sides. People on both sides get thise two mixed up all the time.
To explain the Norway situation. We linked our grid with German and English markets, and whenever that happens the price in Norway no longer regulates the Norwegian market. Our production cost pr kWh is about 0.01 dollar. Norwegian citizens and industry have prospered with this power. It's 100% clean too. Now our tops are almost 1 dollar pr kWh, a thousand times production cost. Because German markets dictates our prices. This is called "ACER" a deal our government made behind our backs, despite us voting "no" to EU, not once, but TWICE. To make matters worse, they claim we are in power deficit (we are not by any stretch), and raze our nature by building insane wind-generators waylaying forests over gigantic areas. It's beyond crazy, and people are protesting in every county, fighting for their home and nature. This is one of the main reasons why the current government have about 16% backing before the coming election, and our challenging parties that want this gone, has about 60% of the votes. Our election is in September. We all pray for change, the people here are actually living in poverty, in a country with 20 BILLION in an oil fund, and 6 million people. Can you believe it? It's all woke, green, socialist BS.

Alex Epstein's "Black Box" idea is interesting because it would give us the most reliability, but if we just let companies run whatever they want to power the grid they WILL ALL gravitate towards fossil fuels because ironically, no matter what the greens say, fossil fuels ARE cheaper than renewables. And since the policy's intended purpose was to promote choice and price diversity and a general competition between renewable energy and fossil fuels, I think this makes the policy rather self defeating. Basically, we HAVE to make a choice on this issue. There really isn't a free market in the energy world. It's fossil fuels (and nuclear) vs nothing, because in a free-choice environment a company will always pick the cheapest most reliable option. So this Black Box policy would create the illusion of a diverse energy economy, without actually doing it. Which means conversely that in order to GET renewable energy we basically HAVE to regulate fossil fuel companies out of business and reap the economic cost of that. So basically, we HAVE to make a choice. We can have a fossil fuel powered free market, or this renewable government regulated dystopia where people randomly get charged $1,000 per kilowatt hour because the wind stopped blowing. There is no diverse free market solution here as far as I can tell unless some huge technological breakthrough happens.

Hi Jordan! As a fellow Albertan (Calgary) I left Canada years ago about the beginning of the Trudeau regime. Haven't looked back and dodged alot of torture and grief and my fellow Canadian and family have experienced both mentally and economically. As an expat it give you that outside perspective that like a frog in the water boiling cant see. I hopped out. So if you read this. Thoughts on Canada being a 51st state of USA.. It took some deep thought on this one both our culture and current times and I think it would be a good thing. Why? There is fear in all politician left and right for their positions and power. This will benefit the working class and there will be less control. Why this is a good idea. So I would say to any politician especially future politician Pierre put your money where your mouth is and lets do a national referendum on this issue. So many benefits with how the world is china, Russia, economies linked. Referendum
The problem for us in the US is the way Canadians vote, if Canada was the 51st state during this last election Kamala would be the 47th president. There is no amount of resources or strategic land worth the US falling into a socialist trap like Canada finds itself in. You can vote your way into an authoritarian gov but you cant vote your way out. Then I imagine quite a few Canadians find the subject to be distasteful at best.
On the topic of reliability; we also need reliable products; starting with a mandatory 25 year warranty on white goods. rather than them being consigned to land fill after a year because the thing stopped working and are not repairable.
I love these talking points and I'm so impressed with bits I've read about small nuclear reactors, which I fail to imagine can't be used more right now. If these SNRs were dropped in areas like mining, or dam creation, or universities, or hospitals and surrounding complexes, these would no longer be draining "the grid" but supplementing it. Add in intelligent management of fossil fuels, and much of world would break through that energy-poverty level, and become productive students of environmental management.
not objective at all. Ive seen him and Peterson miss the mark on renewables year after year. As they complain and gripe, solar and storage continue to grow exponentiallly as the price decreases and efficiencies increase.
@@drewgoodman7932 Objective from the perspective of Objectivism, the philosophy by Ayn Rand, which i was referring to,and which is the basis of Alex his work, which supports human flourishing qua man as a rational individual decision-making agent that deals with his fellowman by volition only. His case is basically that today roughly 80% of the world is still powered by fossil fuels, despite governments with their green policies wasting tax-dollars to push renewables, (which are often backed by fossil fuels anyway so this only adds to the total cost) it is by far the cheapest and most reliable source of energy that is currently available to us, if someday this changes, I'm all for it, (yay cheap and abundant energy), so is Epstein from what I've heard him say and seen in his writings. But til that day comes, he sees no justifications for governmental policies to artificially drive up prices of oil, coal and gas and to even prevent billions of people access to fossil fuels by furthering what is still a new market phenomena based on some future predictions and their supposed outcomes, to do so, from the objectivist perspective, is anti-human. He makes a compelling case for fossil fuels in his latest book(s), which is mostly consistent within an Objectivist framework.

The same problem is going on in the Netherlands. We have an insanely expensive and irrational energy transition program that doesn't work and by their own calculations doesn't reduce global warming one bit. And they don't even try to make an argument along the lines of "if we do it, other countries will follow". I think they understand that's not true. If they truly cared, instead of trying to appear to care, we would have spent all that money on technological research in the hope that a cheap sustainable widely applicable energy source is developed, the Netherlands have some good technological universities.
It is not policy failure, nuclear energy is made more and more expensive to develop because otherwise it would force the electricity to become cheaper. These policies are working as designed.

They are so beautiful and precious sometimes I can’t bear it. I found the advice on public speaking very helpful. To my dismay, I find that I may be expected to speak publicly if I intend to be an author. I am at present “faint but pursuing” this endeavor. So Alex’s advice was helpful. Funny thought, but I believe that the photo in the thumbnail is one that was taken during Dr. Peterson’s conversation in Oxford with Sir Roger Scruton, on transcendence. I connected it in my thoughts with the day he accepted the Sir Roger Scruton award and how ill and frail he was that day, and how rosy-cheeked and bright-eyed and strong and hearty he is today, and I thank God. I don’t take for granted for one moment that Dr. Peterson is still with us.
I've listened to both sides and come to this conclusion there are a small percentage I will say 5% that think we need to burn more fossil fuels we need to do away with all renewable energy then there is the 5% on the green side that think we need to stop using fossil fuels immediately. That leaves us with a 90% , devide that in half, 45% tilt for fossil fuels while the other 45% tilt toward renewables . We are being told that those in the middle are not in a competmize and aline with the extremeest . If I said Jordan Peterson wants to scrap all renewable energy wants to dig up all the fossil fuel possible and burn it right now, put as much CO2 in the air as it is plant food I'd be painting a wrong picture just like a picture of that the other half wants to ban fossil fuel all together. We are in a compromise right now between the two which is probably the best thing. Funny but that's the conclusion but the people talking about the other people talking oh really saying nothing. And the people out there drilling Wells and the people out there building electric cars and renewable energy are doing something in both sides are getting tired of hearing these people talk about the extremes and not what they're doing.
It behooves the thinking class to promote using these finite energy sources to build systems that require less energy, slowly overtime, stretching out this civilization long enough for an easier adaptation. Carbon emission effects & greening the plant results are really secondary issues. On the flip side, increasing the use of finite energy sources will result in meeting the chaos Jordan talks about , more quickly, as prices increase to balance coming shortages (of finite energy sources). Like the movie where the infected masses turn to zombies, those left out will chase those who have enough money to pay. The only questions worth thinking about is how much of these finite energy sources are left and what will be the rising energy cost to extract increasingly difficult to extract products, to figure out how long this civilization has left to exist.
Stats on the impact of human, on the scale of the age of the planet... debatable. Agree that it is an important things to keep doing better things. For sure we focus way to much on it.

I can confirm that, and I can confirm that public policies DID NOT HELP AT ALL. Either if climate change is real and dangerous or not, please do not trust public policies. Be prepared yourselves!
Not quite true. The historical record shows plenty of flood periods in Spain over time, so unrelated to “climate change.” There are other factors at play, such as new reservoirs and flood-control mechanisms, increased urbanization, deforestation, and other changes to surface cover. “Five flood-rich periods were identified (shaded blue in Fig. 10): 1540-1560, 1610-1654, 1720-1745, 1860-1891 and 1970-1990. The flood periods I, II and IV show flood events in all basins.” Source: Historical floods in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula since the 16th century: Trends and regional analysis of extreme flood events. C. Sánchez-García and L. Schulte.
Spain has torn down a lot of the dams in the smaller waterways, on the order of an EU directive. They used to be able to swallow a large part of the rain and protect you from flooding. And as previously mentioned, flooding was also also common in historical times. Blame your politicians for the flooding, not climate change.
I agree with the pro-human energy/climate position; however, the second law of thermodynamics definitively demonstrates that energy can never solve every problem it creates. If that were true you would have a perpetual motion machine in the form of a global society. Everything moves towards entropy. Granted, technically the Earth is not a closed system; however, fossil fuels are a closed solution. They can help, but there will always be some new problem created by terrestrial sources of energy that will need to be solved.
True but you have to assess the timescale you're talking about here. Sure, hydrocarbons are not a permanent solution. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be the primary solution until more solutions can come online.
I completely agree. I’m only refuting the statement that terrestrial forms of energy regardless of how advanced and efficient they might become will be able to ameliorate all the problems they create. They will of course create fewer problems as we get better at harnessing them, but it’ll never be zero sum. It can’t be, the laws of physics do not allow it. Perhaps at some point in the future we will harness our energy needs off world. It still won’t be zero sum but at least whatever potential environmental problems we create will not have terrestrial effects.

It isn't an established fuel. What kinds of thoughts could he possibly have on it? Scientific data necessarily refer to past, and there is zero data on nuclear fusion as an established fuel.
I kind of look at this talk as protectionism for fossil fuels from renewables. Can't compete ultimately so try to shut them down by imposing artificial standards. Its to maintain monopoly positions by utilities. I can see a case for a battery requirement down the road to even out production and consumption. Renewables and batteries will help the grid by providing power when it is needed. It will reduce the amount of investment needed to beef up base load to meet peak demand. We have solar in BC and it is very helpful during the dry summers here by taking the load of hydro during AC season and creating flexibility. We will get a battery some day which can dump some juice into the system during peak load. It can have this function all year. But most of all we can keep the pumps going during fire season if the grid goes down and we need to protect our property. Energy independence is a very conservative value. We do need more wind power to meet winter demand. While government standards can be ridiculous and over reaching (I know because I am dealing with it), it is good to have clean air overall. Even in a small city here there is definitely a pollution haze. Vancouver has lots of pollution that one doesn't see until getting an view from SFU.

I spent my kid-free weekend with your Gospels seminar and your book, dearest Dr. Peterson, and I was so struck by the parallels between your work and Spencer Klavan’s, which I am currently reading.

Fossil Future.Great book. So many thanks, reading at the present time. A great philosopher.
An important component of this discussion is recognition that the anti-humans are probably not driven to be safe from climate. Rather, they are driven by an obsession with interventions.
Thank you for this conversation.
Wind and solar absolutely depend upon fossil-fuels.
*_No fossil-fuels = no wind-and-solar._*

People are listening to Alex. He is having an unseen impact on the world.
It's SMR (Small Modular Reactor), and they are vastly oversold. You aren't going to see them deployed anywhere.
One of the better Objectivists, nice to see him back on.
not objective at all.
You mean the prices go down as they leach of of government. @@drewgoodman7932

But you could make immigrants run on the wheel!
It is not policy failure, nuclear energy is made more and more expensive to develop because otherwise it would force the electricity to become cheaper. These policies are working as designed.

Loved Fossil Future !
LETS GOOO ALEX ROCKS
Interesting and compelling discussion. Smart man, Alex. Pro-human is pro-earth. Hmm, maybe farmers have been on to something all along.
Alex deserves a bigger chair. In more ways than one.
Huh?

yes! the public policy makers are the real crisis.
What an amazing discussion! ❤
