- New episode of beating grandmaster with stupid stuff.
Today we try to low apm challenge, generally i am not a fan of limiting my mechanics, but I guess sometimes it is worth it.

With an average of 65 APM, Harstem has become the fastest Protoss player on the entire SC2 Ladder. Congrats buddy, we knew you could do it!
Haha honestly I remember the old days with Goody 1 base mech push in WoL with 50 apm. Back then the casters were impressed by anything over 150 apm.
Was about to comment something like that
@@Bhuyakasha Whilst true, that's mostly due to the fact SC2 time was 1.4x faster than real time, so 1 "minute" back in WoL days was 42ish seconds. So 150+ actions in 42 seconds is still a decent speed by today's standards.
@@2Stepzupp when did this ever change? The game doesn't run on faster anymore??? Look at the game clock vs video time it's still the same. Maybe the calculation changed idk. They tried putting in epm too at some point. I don't remember 150 being impressive to anyone but the pros where all in the 200 to 300 range even though now the zergs totally hit 800 900 and the rest are around 400
Bruh I’m a toss and this was hilarious
"If I build [blind] cannons in my mineral lines, I might have to micro less later."
- And now he understands why low ranked players do that. :P
"Dear Harstem. Protoss is IMBA! Here is the proof, this guy easily beat me with 64 average APM just using two carriers and A-moving into my base!"

Get notorious protoss imba accuser Artosis to guest star.
Harstem is IMBA plz nerf
"But now if I just don't click anything for an entire minute while the carriers are building, I think that would be a pretty good play."
makes perfect sense to me in any game
Harstem trying HARD to be LOWER than 100 APM Me TRYING HARD TO GET OVER 100 APM :D
Relatable
Go into vs. AI, slow the game down - and practice the motions intently. From here - work through everything you should be doing in order. Now speed it up - what you are doing here is taking things from being something you have to think about actively (slow), to something you do more automatically (fast) and this, will speed you up pretty consistently. Another thing: playing when tired - will also slow you down pretty significantly.
Keep in mind that these players aren't quick because they want to be quick. They are because for them it's a necessity.
You shouldn't go into games thinking you need to get higher APM.
Instead, you should start thinking about what exactly you should do when nothing else is going on.
Once you have an idea about that, start thinking about what you can do in those small inbetween moments.
And even past that what you can do at the same time as other stuff.
APM will simply go higher automatically. Not because you specifically trained to press more buttons more often, but because you know what to do at any given time.
^ These two above are why the SC2 community is unbeatable, all toxicity is left in the general chats lmao
wow, you are fighting for 100, me all happy when I hit 60 a few weeks ago. kudos
Another version of this one: Beating Grandmaster With Stupid Stuff - "Cardiac Arrest": play with heart rate monitor and always keep your APM below your BPM.
🥴
start jogging on the spot during a fight to get extra apm
Harstem: Protoss is statistically the hardest race to play and incredibly demanding in the mid and late game.
Also Harstem: we are just going to A move everywhere.
easy to get to GM but hard to win money games.
@@AntiDoctor-cx2jd how many times have you gotten to GM?
@@user-cn8nu6lq4w How many times have you thought with your neo-cortex?
I just love that he has no clue what adds to the apm so he says things like ' i shouldn't have clicked on the minimap' and 'does typing give apm?'
I love how at the end he was so happy about managing to "reach" 64 apm XD
Idea: get a buddy, then each secretly draw from a hat of all the BGMWSS ideas. To win you have to win, stay within your stupid limit, AND identify what the other guy’s stupid stuff was.
Great idea
Imagine being a top 50 GM, losing to a guy, then finding out through the APM on the scoresheet that you lost to a silver league clown!

Harstem learned how to trick his apm just like alphastar did in it's earlier versions (by saving apm when nothing is happening and them raising it during fights and whatnot), @Harstem since you don't understand what it's like to be slow i really recommend doing a video where you coach someone that has ~100 apm.
Yeah, that would be amazing. Coaching lower ranked players would super entertaining, fun and rich. I bet the lower tier player would improve insanely
It would make for a nice challenge. To. Get him or her to a certain rank in certain nr of games
Will we ever see alphastar again?

9:46 and 9:50
I'm laughing way too hard at Harstem's first rant about the core that's 3 seconds late. Like I literally get tunnel vision while stacking workers.
I'm so bad I can't even tell his workers aren't mining effectively lol
@@unixtreme You want to avoid workers attempting to mine a patch that is already being mined thus bouncing around and you want to preferably mine from the 4 closest mineral patches. On the close patches with good stacking you can put 2 worker and on the far patches 3 worker so that they will never bounce around. The most efficient mining is with 2 workers per patch. When he was talking about inefficient mining he had 3 probes on a far patch and only 1 on a near patch, which is obviously worse than 2-2. He also had bouncing probes in the beginning which he would usually stop and micro back to mining instead of going halfway across the mineral line.
Also, he circles the bad workers with his mouse when talks about it (bottom mineral patches).
IODIS: Skytoss. Doesn't even need micro to win vs GM.
i sincerely hope someone sends in one of those
@LowLinK This. When they just mass Hydra I just need splash or I die, simple.
@@pauldanielmertens There are like at least 5 of them if I remember correctly.
@@Leonhart_93 Most terrans totally miss judge skytoss and forget to apply storm and mass hydra. Noobs.
@LowLinK yea without storm its a whole different army to fight.
Ok, now that critters are back, I have a challenge called "Critter Graveyard". Every time you see a critter you must kill it and build a "gravestone" for it which will essentially be an outpost or homage to fallen critters with a pylon and at least two buildings. This will look completely random all over the map and could offer some challenges.
one pylon is all you need
@@ValDominator how about he has to rebuild any pylon that gets destroyed? The memory must live on!
problem with this is you cant scout at all because there is gonna be critters in the enemy base that you have to kill then. Even attacking would be difficult because of critters.
@@skipp3252 hence challenge :D
You do realize that you will be sent your own replay for an episode of IODIS, right? :D
Harstem, give it a try for the oposite, go as fast as you can! Spam in every possible imaginable way. Absurd rapid fire, extreme keyboard settings. Give it your beast :))
I second this
Ah, "Reynor Cosplay"
the "Speed" challenge, APM can't drop below 400 at any point
Me: struggles to hit 100 apm as zerg.
harstem: struggles to get under 100 apm as toss
Harstem roasting me for sitting there and watching the mining happen hits pretty hard.
90-120, maximum
Sometimes i feel like a total vegetable when i just sit there looking at the probes and don't see drops coming in
I feel like a boomer when I get up to about 90 APM and I start forgetting macro and upgrades and miss drops
The exact opposite of the fighting game scene, where high APM is the hallmark of a bad player "mashing buttons". The pros all click exactly once for each fireball.
"I can't believe there are players that actually play like this" - Harstem :D
As a noob/bronze player I actually don't really understand how to have a APM >200 consistently. I assume a major factor is that my actions are not as "automatic". Rather I need to think consciously about each action and that obviously slows down a lot.
@@falknfurter u have a life brah, its okay
Cap looked happier seeing that 64 APM at the end screen than winning the BO5 against Maru lmao
But not as happy as that time Maru gg'd out but won the series ;)
Finally a Harstem build that is playable by us mere mortals!!
Harstem:do u watch ur probes mining?...Me:look how cool the mining animation for probes is
"phoenix 1st, into double carrier. Who doesn't know this" killed me. xD I rewatched that part 10+ times.
I actually think this is a good exercise for a lot of players. So often you see even pro-players with 300 apm not performing the tasks they NEED to be doing, for example they build a group of zealots to kill a worker line, but get distracted and don't actually send them in, which is 5 actions (go there on the map, select the units, press A, click location of enemy base, move back to point of interest on the map). I think Artosis said this once, the key to the game is not doing a lot, but doing the right thing at the right time. Having a lot of APM means you can do a lot more per measure of time, but if you are not doing the right things then you are not actually playing better then a person with low APM that also doesn't do the right things...
Focusing on APM is something way to many SC fans and players do, you see this a lot in the "Is it imba or do I suck"-reports, where the guy says he had way more APM than his opponent like that means he is a better player. No, high APM is only useful if you do the right things, if you don't end up doing the right things then your APM means nothing...
Understanding this will also give you a way to increase your (useful) APM, because if you just focus on what you should be doing, instead of just spamming the move command to get a higher APM, you will naturally improve your APM and actually win. For example, you send in your harassing force, but you know you have to check if you are still producing units/workers, so you check your buildings by pressing the hotkey, build something and then return your attention to your harass. A lot of players over-micro their units (for that sweet, sweet APM score) and let their macro slip, but just A-move them in, check up on your macro (with hot-keys, often don't even have to move your screen away) and then do a bit of micro or just move them out again. And if you focus on this and become faster at it you can then find the time to actually micro your units.
It always amazes me to see a Korean pro-gamer in GSL Code A or even Code S have an apm of 300 or 400 and still not able to just do the little things that will actually make a big difference, they focus way to much on spamming move commands, focus firing or something, clicking a place 10 times in a row when he could have send in a harassment force in that time or build units. They have coaches right? Those coaches are more knowledgeable about the game then me, so they should identify that problem and improve it...
7:30 - "Is that just his entire plan, to just not do anything"
Why yes, yes it is. He's Toss after all :)
4:00 The Empath within me is cringing in solidarity, while the Sadist is cackling in delight.
You have caused a war within my soul.
I kinda wanna see this one again but with Harstem using one of the HUDs that has an APM counte.
Say what you will about the Protoss race, but I for one am glad they exist. I was born with a disability that means I only have 1 finger on each hand. Blizzard was extremely considerate to provide a race I can win with even with this disability, very inclusive. Oh also my disability left me blind and with only 3 brain cells but Protoss allows me to get a low GM rank. Thank you Blizzard for caring for the disabled like me.
APE MOVE
This is so inspiring.
I was born with a condition where my brain never actually formed. I just have an empty skull.
Protoss is absolutely perfect for me to actually play the game. I love just rolling my face across the keyboard and owning.
Nice pasta.
I was born in a country where everybody in the neighbourhood used the same wifi router and i was playing from a cheap ass laptop with 500 ping. Thanks god there was protoss to win me games with cannon rushes. :))))
This is great content! Not only because it's funny, but in contrast to watching pro tournament games, it shows that you don't have to tryhard your butt off to play SC2. Makes it less intimidating.
Its like playing gta and following the road rules

1:23 ?? That's me, Captain! That. Is. Me! Way down here in Bronze League! 65 APM is a GOAL for me! HAHA
"Do you just watch the mining happening?" he asks genuinely
Yes. Yes I do. They are pretty.
Harstem on 3 base at 11 minutes:
"Now i just Lay back"
Harstem using camera hotkeys actually does not count towards your apm... might've been useful info but too late now lol
"Do you guys just sit like this?" Lmfao
I thought once or twice about asking for this challenge, but never had the courage to do so.
It also seems like a decent way to practice in lower levels, it's not just about spamming buttons all the time, but making sure every action has an impact.
You can choose that classic console skin it has an apm counter
you can enable a apm counter on every console skin
@@ZoeylaRose Don't think it's true, there is no option for that in game.
Btw using camera locations does not add APM
true
As someone who has very low APM, a lot of it is not having the skills to know what to do instead of what I am doing to accomplish stuff, by which I mean, technique. Also not practiced in dividing my attention across multiple areas of engagement. But, I suspect, the largest problem is not enough practice. I only play, maybe, 10-20 hours a year. So even though my APM is so very low, things still feel quite frenetic just because I have to actively think about what to do and don’t have build orders and such fully ingrained, though that would probably reduce my APM a little if I knew exactly what to do in the early game.
For the record, camera hotkeys don't increase APM, only SPM.
Strokes per minute?
Watch this guy release an iodis form with the second game replay. Harstem imba
double dipping content IMBA
Most exciting episode so far. I really was nervous there with you!
BGMWSS idea: Irene chooses build-orders from the IODIS episodes and before each game you pull one out of a hat.
Oh cool! I was one of the people to suggest this challenge. I'm a gold leaguer with 50s APM Protoss and Terran, 70s with Zerg.
And this my friend, is why ladder-(z)heroes think airtoss is imba, at least at their level of play: getting to airtoss with shield battery is easy, and the apm required to get this army to work at 60% of it's max efficiency is so low, that two weeks after switching to toss from my low plat main zerg I was master 3 with toss. And I still suck pretty hard.
do you understand that playing any sort of zerg comp is like the polar opposite of skytoss? Constantly trading with outmining vs sitting back defending if needed and building carriers?
Maybe you just found style that suits you more. I have examples in other games. For example I was 3.5k mmr dota player, but then I started to play terrorblade in basically every game and went to 5k with like 75% winrate, and not because he was broken, but because he really suit of how I want to play the game.
Same with league where I was stuck in gold playing fiora pre rework but then got to diamond playing tryndamere despite them both being splitpushers. Sometimes it just clicks for you.
Maybe you are bad at trading down and remaxing comparing to sitting back and building an ultimate skytoss army.
@@user-mt2jm7vy6i I really like how non hostile you were in this comment, thanks for being nice 🤗
You are only Master 3 with protoss due to a ladder bug. Your mmr is what determines your skill, a bronze league player gets into M3 right now if they just get lucky. If you have less than 4500 mmr you aren't a master player.
@@henningbreede6428 I know about that bug and that's not what I was speaking about.
@@Arnianor so if you know that you're not a master player, why did you claim that?
this is literally how I play protoss, 4700 mmrish, 3 base skytoss camp into a-click

I love the cute little beagles roaming the map!
Cap, thanks for all the great content, best of luck for whatever you do next. =)
Low APM does not mean playing slow, it means not spamming keys and quadruple clicking to move a unit, instead, just clicking once
This was a great episode, super funny to see you struggle to talk while playing so slow. It really proves that strategy and game knowledge will get you much further than apm. Not that that wasn't obvious but its a nice little moral of the story.
I got a BGMWSS idea that will be literal anguish for you! *NO RALLY POINTS! Also no warp gate or abusing idle worker/all army. So you have to macro your HEART OUT, select every single probe or built unit and command it to work.* It's basically brood war macro difficulty with LOTV speed, but I'm sure you can do it because you're a Rank Roulette pro afterall.
Hell yeah i sugested this long time ago can wait to watch before bed
Ok, I love this one! :D GJ Harstem!
hahah dude i just started watching you… i got back into SC2 after 6 years and i’m on of these low apm guys
Beating grandmaster with *protoss
Oh, I'm very pleased to see that Harstem tries out the build my clanmate made and played against Harstem's terran. There is no phoenix b4 carriers, either oracle or void ray.
APM does not count clicks, it counts acions. As such, clicking on the minimap and using camera hotkeys do not count towars APM. Double cliking on a control group to move the camera to it only counts once (for the selection). Also, giving contrasting commands (like move commands in different directions) with less than 0,1 s delay does not count towards APM more than once.
Happy retirement, Captain. Godspeed
6:38 anyone else see the visible pain Harstem felt when he made a mistake 🤣
Congratz! You're just proving that the carriers are imba LOL!
65APM? That's really fast for average Protoss players xD

Wow that waz a real beat grandmaster with stupid stuff. very good episode!!!
"How do people do that?" Harstem is as amazed by people with low APM as the average gamer is by pros with super high APM. Haha.
New title for a series like this: "SC2 Golf"
Harstem proving that Protoss requires no apm to play. Literal a-move race.
:P
The truth has been out every toss players a moves and wins with ease its the zerg and terran race you have to try hard to win vs toss
You can do some micro management, scouting and a fairly efficient base at ~60 overall apm ...
I'm casual playing but also reached (EU) Master league (as a 2-team) and was Gold in 1v1, my APM is around 70-80 usually, sometimes in the 60ies.
The way is not to "lean back and do nothing" but to play click-efficiently and relaxed instead. Doesn't mean you shouldn't focus on details.
65 apm is fairly high if you do not artificially increase your apm by clicking 5-20 times on actions that only need a single click for the same result.
The 95 must come from similar behaviour you didn't notice.
One big factor is the warp-in gateway, those need a ton of actions while you could also queue 2-3 units in traditional gateway. That will boost "apm" a lot for ground based armies.
I mean look at your first 3 minutes in game #1, around 80 APM. 240 clicks to build 9 buildings and a couple units. Where did all those clicks go.. ?
Controlling single units in a fight need temp high APM, just as lifting up units mid fight or managing multiple armies in different locations.
Also having all army in one control group does not reduce your APM, it increases it. You will need to change positions more often, you'll need to use TAB all the time (probably counts as action).
I almost always play 2v2, that of course reduces required APMs
@@adriaan4808 Yep, it's extremely annoying to watch the beginning of those matches where you can see one single probe being sent to the same crystal 40-50 times.
APM is a stupid ranking, if there ever comes a Starcraft III it needs to incorporate rAPM (real APM) which measures the actual sustained APM during fights and ignores useless clicks
I love when this series could actually double as practice for improvement spmehow
You know in that TvP the Terran player was MALDING after he saw 65 apm on the score screen. Dude probably had an existential crisis lmfao
Cuku and Harstem know each other. In general his opponents know who he is.
Harstem is such a fun guy i love it
you my man, are a boss :D nice one!
Harstem, you can enable the APM counter in game. Left clicks, control groups, and camera hotkeys don't affect ur apm
Rly good vid haha
This is how it feels to walk behind someone who is walking slow.
this hurts my brain, can't imagine how you didn't go crazy playing like this :)
This episode should be called the Goody challenge.
Ok now to settle the debate. Do the same challenge with Terran and Zerg too. If you can’t win with 65apm. Then you know which is the easiest race to play.
