Hi winter. I am that one Terran you got to play a game of starcraft. That game was in fact my first game. I made my barracks and started making my marines. Then a reaper jumped in my base and started murdering me. As advised I didn't panic and it lived there for a moment while my marines where builing (it killed the first three). I thought "Well this guy is likely not building workers while this reaper runs rings around me so I will max out and murder him. I died to a tank in my mineral line a minute later.
It felt so strange seeing winter stand for the intro. I've been watching him for longer than I can remember, but I don't think I've ever seen him stand (except for the TEEEEEERAN!!! emote)
Had the game for a long time, but never played outside of campaign (play on a laptop with trackpad). Your tutorials have helped my game play with my laptop. Excited to turn a new leaf and play online after schools done.
Dude, ive followed you for like 6 years. All your commentaries, all your videos all your games. I reeeeaaaalllyyyy wish you would deep dive for a 12 month grind and just go pro again and murder the scene lol. Some of your games are saved on my pc and me and my friends have watched them legitimately 20 times each. I never comment on any of my accounts but i just needed to remind basically the entire starcraft community, WINTER is and was an actual GOAT. There is only a handful of GOATS in SC2 that will be remembered....WINTER is one of the best ever starcraft players when it comes to clutching crazy ridiculous plays and stupidle intuitive reads in play. Forever fan here, take care dude
ok, I'm doing the same...are you actually having any luck? This stupid game put me in silver at 2400 mmr after placement, which makes no god damn sense because I lost to 1700 mmr players (who had huge armies at 5 minutes and APM's of 100+). This isn't "fun" at all.
Listening to those questions at 1:30:00 - 1:43:00 - you have so much patience. Quick summary: How do I counter a (dubious North American) build? 1. run the replay through a build order stripper 2. Practice the build as the cheesy (North American) 3. Create a new account on the European ladder 4. Play the build for your placement matches If you go 5-0, bring it back to North America and get #1 on the ladder. If you get crushed on the European ladder, 1. run the replay through a build order stripper 2. Practice the build as the European 3. Always win against that (North American) build as long as you identify the dubious build early by scouting.
As a new player back in 2020 with no familiarity with RTS aside from making maps in AoE 2 my starting APM was around 25, but once I knew what was going it did average around 50. Trying to grind out of silver and on good games I will hit 90 but usually around 70. Good Numbers!
I think this is the best B2GM guide out there, mostly because he actually limits the speed at which he does things. He also does a better job at explaining the principles rather than just demonstrating a build order. Other channels like Vibe or PIG do a pretty good job of explaining the game but they also move waaaay faster. PIG had something around 120+ APM in his Bronze league videos. Vibe and PIG also really train a specific build order while this guide shows many different ways of playing, focusing on the fundamentals of macro, scouting, etc.
yeah. i really dont like vibes or pigs approaches tbh. i am not saying that what they do teach isnt working or wrong. but its too static and too brute force ONE thing. i primarily play games because they are FUN. and playing hundreds of vibe games sitting in your base afk for 30 minutes building workers is not fun at all. and if something happens outside of your plan, you re screwed. in reality the game is very dynamic and stuff happens and... you know i m just not a big fan of having a static ''do this and only this and ignore everything else'' in a very dynamic enviroment that you are supposed to interact with. also i think vibes way can even be damaging long term. if you follow this ''build worker for 30 minutes and then a move without watching'' gameplan and lets say you hit like plat or diamond... then what? all of a sudden your opponen start actually playing the game and all you can do is build a lot of workers and a move because you have not practiced anything else. i think understanding basic concepts and gradually improving in them together as you play will just make you an overall better and well rounded player in the long run. and winter is kind of doing exactly that. winters series, you learn stuff, you ll get a little bit better at everything every game and foremost .. it is FUN
I am super excited for the large quantity of long commentary videos coming up soon! Been listening to the 2020 low apm challenge ever since it came out, it will be great to have every race represented as well in the individual series, though we both know itll take a long time. Thank you Winter!
You’re instructional videos are all excellent. You have a very straightforward calm way of presenting your material and it’s really easy to pick up what you’re putting down. I appreciate your work on these, they’ve helped me come a long way in my skill level and made StarCraft a lot more fun for me.
I think this sort of thing is really helpful, it shows just how much you can get done with less APM if you are making the right units, making the right calls, and taking meaningful, informed actions, instead of just wildly clicking, building tech you don't need, and rushing the enemy with half-baked compositions. Him beating the smurf accounts with 100+ APM while usually going about half their APM is pretty impressive. These tips, without the actionable penalty of being soft-capped at 50 APM could really help someone who can spare the extra 5-10 APM to do everything he would have done, only faster.
And he's even floating some amount of resources sometimes delaying the first CC despite having 500+ minerals, and later on banking plenty of orbital energy. It's quite enlightening to watch this.
Thank you for doing an improved version of the low APM challenge. As a metal-league player, it gives me a sense of what I should focus on in order to improve.
I didn’t realize how important worker count is. I’ve only been building 55 workers and could never max out before 13:30, which felt really slow. Getting more workers would let me max out earlier and have the production to replace my army quickly after attacking if I don’t wipe them out. Huge improvement! :)
This series is great because unlike a LoL ladder climbing series you set a hard limit on yourself to try and even the playing field. It is actually a great learning series, not just stomping lows for no reason.
Winter I wanna tell you that you have me the skills and confidence to actually put up a fight online. It took me so long to get over that turtling phase and when I finally did I realized I'm not half bad. Thank you, good sir
I haven't watched or played starcraft 2 in a few years, not since day9 was doing dailies (under 100), this earned you a new subscriber, thanks youtube algorithm for showing me your channel.
I just finished my third day playing and I ranked in silver 2 I lost a couple and won a couple and it's all thanks to your videos, thanks for all the help :)
Love the content. I'm looking forward to the rest of them. From the viewer's perspective this series is called the Low Heart Rate Challenge. My heart is going at 130 bpm just because Winter pressed the Ranked Button.
Winter. You are awesome! I try all races and my Terran is my worst by nearly 600 MMR (though not quite all the way down in bronze…) I just played 6 games today after watching this and won every one of them.
I've just discovered this series...i've never been a great player, I've always been a brainded that tried to work only on his speed of execution when it comes to building order and such. Then the years go by, you do not have too much time...and here it is, a good video for a slow terran like me. LOVE IT
i like these low apm challenges because its totally true! when i was first playing 1v1s i spammed the shit out of my keyboard trying to get to 200 apm. was closer to 170 by the time i gave up and now i hover around 90-100 apm in plat 1, no spam just doing the things that need done.
Your the man, Winter. I'm restarting this series because I'm giving it a real try this time to rock at this game. Loved brooder so much. Thanks for being you bro!
Grew up on the Original and Brood War, so finally got into SC2 1.5 weeks ago. Intimidating at first since a good bit is different, new units, but now that I've learned it I'm pretty hooked. Your videos helped a lot getting familiar with builds and basic counters.
Thank you so much for this, I just found this and even just watching the bronze video helped me to play better in all levels of my game. I am currently watching the rest of the low APM guides. I really needed this kind of a guide to help me do better.

57:19 Age of Empires 2 playerbase is more sophisticated than SC2's inasmuch as they have a name to distinguish this. They call it Booming when you maximize your economy, as opposed to Turtling or Rushing.
Met my best friend on this game we played for many years we have been friends for even longer 12 years now! And well recent years when we didn’t really play sc2 he would play on the side and he got masters before me! I can’t let this slide boys I think it’s time to dust off and learn It all over again.. been a good long 6 years
Seeing this video and the quality of fun and instruction on display has inspired me to re-re-reinstall Starcraft 2 to try and learn it for the third time. *Plays a game vs. Training Level 1* *Sees his APM is 30* Good, glad I know I don't have to slow myself down, I'm clearly not rushing :)
Long time watcher, very short time player, my experience in sc2 is super limited. I grinded to gold as a Zerg maybe like 6 years ago that’s it, but with these videos, I did my first few ranked matches and got masters league. I really don’t mean to be condescending to anyone but if your still struggling to climb the ladder, and you haven’t listened to what winter thinks is important, than your doing yourself a disservice. Sticking to your build order/gameplan and successful scouting. THATS IT. Boom your master league. Stop over thinking the game and stop cheesing, stop trying to go for worker drops and all this fancy shit. If again have a gameplan and stick to it. Nothing more or less.
I've been so pumped to see you do a *race specific* B2GM .. So I could follow the Terran one w/out having to wade through offrace stuff. It's much better to do it this way.
You did motivate me to play SC2 again, but I found the game too demanding. At this point, I think I'm too old to play SC2 in a 'competitive manner', so I'll stick to custom games and/or watching videos.
I felt this way at first too, but then I realised it's because I was trying to do too many things and applying to many concepts I learnt from watching pro games, and overwhelmed myself. The thing is no matter what, if you play ladder you will lose 50% of your games. So the approach and mindset really matters more than trying to just win each game. You need an overarching plan, okay this is what I'm going to focus on in these next few weeks, not going to try too much fancy stuff (e.g. I artificially impose a rule where you only make marines and a-move to enemy's base and see how far that can get me), let's see how it matches against different opponents and strategies and how I can improve. Watch the replay of every game you play and learn to laugh at your own mistakes.
I love your low APM content. I feel fairly confident with terran, but I'm really looking forward to your Protoss and Zerg episodes. I'm starting to learn toss, and I'm totally lost with zerg
Woah motivated me the opening speech I never played online but I enjoyed the first series I like the game casually single player etc but gonna watch this
While "Assault Mode" Vikings do get a nice bonus vs Mech, they're still substandard. I think it's mainly that we're so used to landed Vikings sucking, that when they're merely below average vs Mech it feels amazing. I have Vikings around 70% cost-efficent vs Thors, for example. They're better at causing damage than taking it, so that can come in handy.
I started playing sc2 again and played zerg the way you teach in your low apm challenge. Now I'm going to try the same thing with terran or protoss to see of its easier because of the lower apm that is required :))
very excited for this series. Maybe time to actually play the game. Though i will say the stream snipers are annoying. At least by proxy. If winter is trying to demonstrate what you need to get out of bronze and a bunch of gold's and up are jumping in there to get on stream or whatever it takes away a little from the content. I do still appreciate it and find it very helpful and motivating
I'm a zerg player that switched to random. You just have to have enough experience with each race that you develop sound mechanics. After that general game knowledge that you learned from playing zerg kicks in and it's not so hard.
I'm new, I play on a laptop with a trackpad, my left click button is not very responsive, and I just am not that fast, so seeing someone play at low APM is very helpful I'm also a long time fan of Brood War, never played it competitively, but it was the first game I ever played, and I continue to play it frequently (against ai). So I'm getting used to all the new hotkeys. I can't tell you how many times in campaign I kept mashing the M key and wondered why my barracks wouldn't build marines SCII was my birthday present to myself so I've only been playing it for a couple of weeks.
Impressive that Winter has been playing SC2 for 12 years, when he is clearly 17 years old.

im very glad i found this series, while trying to find out how to get into the game, it has felt very challenging for me to acquire a proper sense of understanding and perspective on the workings of the game and its developed techniques,
as my very first rts and first non-fighting game/non-fps that ive tried to learn in a long time, im pretty lost when it comes to familiarizing myself with the atmosphere in the community and the objective of the games core mechanics like i can swiftly achieve with subjects within my usual territory
like with games in my known genres, i look through tutorials in game, experiment against bots, and look up a variety of tournament as well as nonprofessional higher-level footage to kinda get a big picture that can demonstrate the state/purpose of the game and its community.
but as i expected, this style of versus, and version of mechanical depth is more intensely unique than i could prepare for, my usual method is much less effective here
while struggling to become satisfied with how i control the game, analyze, and respond to conditions within time, my objective of finding something that can act as my tutorial so that i can practice in a way thats not just reading through help sections over and over and/or practicing solely for higher apm that i dont even know what to do with, was turning out to be kinda far fetched;
finding this kind of content is what i was looking for, allowing me to see through a terran's pov who (even though just by coincidence) wont fire out drum loads of inputs, giving me nothing to hold on to and take in (this usually can be overlooked in fgs and fps' but that doesnt seem to be the case here for me), explaining the core thought process, and even demonstrating some of the community's thoughts through the calm humor mixed in; this is the kind of stuff i look forward to finding when exploring new games
i still dont know a ton and have a long way to go before feeling confident, but thanks to you, what previously seemed like a rough and inefficient learning process is now looking to become a comfortable and passable welcoming into a new experience that started as exciting, then turned uncertain, then was assured to be exciting again

I feel that it must be said: the name Macrosoft is pure gold
I just made it to gold and I already see a vast difference in the way people play
Aww yisss, was hyped for this, after It was announced in one of the recent angry coaches.
Renember to build YOUR SECOND PYLON.
The most difficult 1v1 game is definitely Go, bro
Watching ur videos motivated me to try multi-player 1v1 for the first time. Got reaper rushed by a diamond 3. Lol first game ever 🤣
I've been so pumped to see you do a *race specific* B2GM .. So I could follow the Terran one w/out having to wade through offrace stuff. It's much better to do it this way.
after the patch i’m here to learn terran
Can barely tolerate terran, but love winter and the low apm challenge! Let’s get rolling!!!!!
So happy! Got me back into the game!
Love you Winter. Have been enjoying the last Low APM 2020 a lot and keep coming back to it ever since...though my gameplay still sucks 😅
Yesh! I have watched that old apm challenge like 4 times while waiting for new one!
I love your low APM content. I feel fairly confident with terran, but I'm really looking forward to your Protoss and Zerg episodes. I'm starting to learn toss, and I'm totally lost with zerg
Man I've been away for too long, Good to see winter still around! Also watched your guides back in the day hahaha
hahahahaha, was getting kinda hyped into starting to play a bit and that speech really got me pumped. Can't wait to try all of this with my 70 apm!
hmmm turns out it's 55... but i woooon!!!!
They're better at causing damage than taking it, so that can come in handy.
this felt so late 90s
It’s like watching the Super Bowl here for the ads
yes this is awesome i was hoping we would get an individual race one of these some day
“Not since the last time you watched me” guilty as charged.
WHAT! This is amazing, so excited to see this happen in real time. Need to get to Twitch and see some of this live.
I started playing sc2 again and played zerg the way you teach in your low apm challenge.
Now I'm going to try the same thing with terran or protoss to see of its easier because of the lower apm that is required :))
re: MacroSoft
Melinda Gates, after her nuptial moment with Bill: "Now I understand why you named your company Microsoft."
Winter is StarCraft 2 ‘s speech writer!
Finally a guide for me!
Just adore your content
Can't wait till the zerg one is out.
very excited for this series.
I'm a zerg player who plays random to help teach my friends how to play. Is there a low Thoughts Per Minute guide for being gold in all races?
I'm a zerg player that switched to random. You just have to have enough experience with each race that you develop sound mechanics. After that general game knowledge that you learned from playing zerg kicks in and it's not so hard.
what an intro oh my god. That's perfect
great job winter
Omg I can finally pretend that I'm learning anything while the last time I launched sc2 was a month ago
Lowko reaction to low apm games. Brilliant
I'm new, I play on a laptop with a trackpad, my left click button is not very responsive, and I just am not that fast, so seeing someone play at low APM is very helpful
I'm also a long time fan of Brood War, never played it competitively, but it was the first game I ever played, and I continue to play it frequently (against ai). So I'm getting used to all the new hotkeys. I can't tell you how many times in campaign I kept mashing the M key and wondered why my barracks wouldn't build marines
SCII was my birthday present to myself so I've only been playing it for a couple of weeks.
What a wonderful find on UA-cam. Great channel
