In Episode 6 of the Happen Films podcast, with Jordan away spending time with an unwell family member, Antoinette is flying solo for the first time. She had the pleasure of speaking to Nate Hagens, someone we’ve been following for a while now because we love his deep knowledge and insight into the interrelationship between the environment, energy, and finance.
Having begun his career on Wall Street, Nate has a deep understanding of finance, but his career took a change of direction in the early 2000s as he began to understand the repercussions of peak oil. His personal research led him back to university and a PhD in Natural Resources and he’s dedicated the last 20 years to educating himself, freshman students and the world at large about what he terms The Human Predicament.
Now, instead of Wall Street being the hub of his universe, he states: “Our real stock market is our air, our soils, our forests, our oceans, and the biodiversity we share the planet with. This stock market has been going down for over a millennium and has been in slo-mo crash mode [for decades].”
How did we get to this point, and how do we move beyond it in a way that ensures the planet and humans will thrive?
We hope you enjoy the podcast. Check out the links below to dive deeper into Nate’s research, writings and videoed talks.

So very glad I actively listened. A perspective that my generation were not offered (55yo). Off grid 15 years, growing my food, discovering contentment through talks like this one.

I felt engaged throughout the whole interview, most enjoyable, thank you. We need more hope and less fear in this world and I felt that Nate provided a perfect balance in his words to describe how we as a society can move forward and create positive experiences out of stressful situations. Very inspiring talk.

Hello there Happen Films! First of all, I want to say that I absolutely love your work.
I live on a farm in a rural area of state called Tamil Nadu, in India. We have a local group here of us and a few other organic farmers like our family in the local area. We have a meetup which we do once a month where we all get together, so I recently got this idea of screening one of your films at the beginning of each meetup. Even though the people in our group are into organic farming, they aren't aware about many other things. For example: Climate Change, Energy, Resources,
    etc.
So I thought that maybe watching some of your films might open their minds to some broader stuff. The problem is though, that they don't know English. So my mom started work on translating the subtitles of your video "Creatures of Place" a few days ago, into Tamil. Just yesterday though I found out that you guys had suddenly locked translation for that video, so we aren't able to continue translating. I
know that you may be thinking that you could just auto-translate it into Tamil, but as we found out a few days ago, the auto translated text hardly makes any sense. So I just wanted to ask if you could enable translation again so my mom can continue working on it.
Really really grateful for your work and thanks a lot for your time, Abhi.

Sorry you've had trouble with the community translation settings. I don't know how to help in this case because they haven't been turned off for that film (or any of ours, in fact!). You should be able to continue...

@@happenfilms So sorry, my bad. UA-cam threw me off. It was the English subtitles that were locked, not for any other languages. Quite confusing. Anyway, thank you for your reply.

As Ursula K. LeGuin the amazing author said “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.”

Thank you for all the podcasts (and films!), I've listened to all the podcasts now and they are all so inspiring but this one surprised me by moving me on a very personal level and reminding me again of the importance of human connection, close community and the actual value of life (not the monetary, material one). We're living in another lockdown here (and sometimes it's scary to think of the fall out of this and brexit and all the rest of the sh* but it is also creating positive changes) so we are once again being denied access to social interactions, which makes the need for them so much more visible then when they are just absent from life. So thank you again for this series, if I couldn't see and hear from you and others about all the possibilities and positivities of life it would be hard to believe they exist. And I'll definitely get around to supporting you on patreon or whatever it is, it's easy to forgot those things are important too.

For anyone interested in an early, prescient look at the unfolding human "predicament", check out William R.Catton Jr.'s 1982 book, "Overshoot". In fact, he's the guy, I think, who first began referring to our situation as a "predicament".

at 16;30 he gives insight to what I do. Consume less in the US. I even rebuilt my pickup truck to provide mobile hybrid power for a house or shop. I live without running water in the house. Try that first world. Ever heard of the 10 principles of BM as a way to live better in a village environment. How about Kapwa? How about making art and gifting often? Living without running water in the house for 3 years now. check my channel.

Thank you Nate, strange to believe honesty exists in capitalism, sell the house with a child in attendance and consider the lies to profit. Can’t buy me love is a song. The economy is based on dominion, it is based on control, and it is based on power over other humans called privilege. If we spend more time in the commons, then humans meet equality, since time immemorial. Thermodynamics is the discussion, then habit needs to address the ‘hate’ based economics that allows people to give up their life and health, in order to gain cash.
Petro dollars, should be sunlight dollars, then we are even steven.
Without economics, we find friendships...every time. destroying resources is virtually impossible when we live in the mess we create. The maxim of friendship is 120. $300 trillion debt is the amount of oil carbon to be burned to pay back the debt which equals the end of our biosphere 2008 was the conclusion, now with no debt ceiling to make up for hard to gain resources, we only over spend in the first quarter our atmospheric moisture, atmospheric carbon atmospheric micro plastic and many other soil harming expenses for economic futility.
Humans are good, the system is sick.Plant a tree and learn ubuntu or, non violent communication with is a level of understanding of clear unambiguous language and the language used by an absolutely fearless child called Greta. Our present provocative language creates the efficiency to the lie.
Gene Roddenberry told the better story, his capability was indigenous understanding, see how influential his ideas were, it was not just chance, it was human honesty.
Blade Runner is the encapsulated journey we are living, to be robotic about economics and not genius in growth by exploring the genius in every child. All these theorists forget to be the child and explore how childhood, non monetary relationships are the strongest. Permaculture is a Thank you science, and like any, if you collapse in to dissolution and depression, the dirt is the best place to begin over. Gandhi was not a leader, he was a chief in wisdom, leaders take us over the edge with the one attempting to help the many, which in physics an impossibility and an imposition to culture and health. Our dominion and desire to ‘help’ far away people, will never allow us the close relationship with the culture of that land and its soil. We have devastated other countries with our want of coffee, bananas, nuts, cucumbers, milk, cars, lithium and our manipulation to believe our imposition is sustainable in integrity by earning others a dominant privilege, not a sustainable privilege.
Absolutely agree with the brotherhood, the brain can not be in two places at once because humans change their minds every few seconds so we are foolish with linearity in a spiralling planet chasing a moving sun into the future. Hence DNA has no finishing point in the selections available, to the selections used. We learn flat earth economics at the age of 5. Mostly with, ‘what would you like to be when you grow up?’ first provocative statement to dictate a linear outcome and dissuade the genius brain from choosing all the other possibilities.

Most people don't understand the real problem. The real problem is our behavior towards the environment.
What is the nature of our behavior? Answer: "Follow the money."
Our true Profit. Our Lord?... God?... Love?... Country?... business?... Environment. We are fed by our environment, and it is our one and only true Profit. You can call your "Profit"
anything you would like to call it. Call it a person's name or a religion, business, country, etcetera. But what do you really get with any of these things? You get, in this society,
the credits that you will need in order to be fed by your true Profit i.e., the substance of the Environment that you need in order to live. Think about how we are all
destroying our one true Profit, not because we eat from it, but because we don't feed it. Our true Profit is starving, and we really can't live without our Profit.
When you get paid for your work, do you go home and burn your paycheck and then set your house on fire. No, because you can't live without your Profit.
So then, why are we destroying our one and only actual and real true Profit i.e., the Environment? It is because we have failed to properly identify our Profit.
It seems very strange to me that the dictionary definition of Profit doesn't include the word Environment. The Environment really is our only true Profit. We must realize that
all of us are living within the bounds of a false definition of Profit. Our behavior is being guided by the false Profit. May I propose that we need to adjust our behavior
in order to rescue our Profit. How dare we mis-define our true Profit by leaving the Profits true name out of "Profits" definition.
Our true Profit is our Environment. Environment is the Profits name.
This is how the word Profit should be defined:
Profit = our gratefulness and loving care for our Environment, and for the substance that it provides to all of us.
If we don't give our true Profit the honor of a proper definition, then the false Profit will kill us all.
We'd better hurry because we are running out of time.
P.S. We must honor our Profit, the Environment. Let's all show our highest and most loving respect for the Environment, our one and only true Profit.
Profit should always start with a capital "P" and Profits name should always start with a capital "E", so we will always be reminded that it's our life line. 💖

So These two incredibly intelligent Humans, who have it figured out the problems, have left out the one most important choices we can all make today! This is the easiest and most effective decision to effect all the issues they have discussed.
It's Based on Non-Violence and Kindness. It's called Veganisim. I have yet heard one reference to the Life choice of simply not wanting to Participate in Violence any more against ourselves, The Biosphere and most importantly to our Brothers and Sisters of the Animal world that need and deserve our Compassion. I'm sure they will both find the beauty, empathy and freedom to join the ever growing community of Non Violent Veganisim.
Holy Shit I commented to Soon! He just said We need to Take Care of ourselves and Dismissing the issue of non violence against animals. She then Agrees with him. Fuck Baby steps towards Non Violence. You are both Wrong and Delusional!
