@@Michael_McMillan Hey Michael, thanks for raising this. The lack of diversity is one regret we have about this film. While we did attempt to include stories with people from different ethnicities and backgrounds, it didn’t come together for us and now when we reflect on it we frankly didn’t try hard enough. If we were making this film today it would look very different and we’ve since made a commitment to ensuring our films reflect the diversity of our community.

There are certainly animals and plants that have excess production/resource use that dominates and alters the local environment. So perhaps calling the remnants of our excess production waste is what the actual human concept is, and not necessarily creating the excess.

Grew small backyard garden, been eating and preserving vegetables all summer, compost, substitute plastic. Don't walk into grocery store, pesticides and processed foods. Lost 50 lbs., take me off medication. I feel an urgency, I'm 64, hoping to find peace in nature, with animals and self sustainability. I do feel alone in a materialistic world, grew up in country.

I continue to do more each year. I am only one person, but I plant diverse trees indigenous to our area every year, I teach the values of diversification & an arboretum indigenous to our area. I recycle and I aim for a zero carbon footprint. I have added exterior insulation, interior insulation, roller shutters, awnings, rain water collection reservoirs and NON GMO heritage brand organic gardens. Every year I add something new. We can do this.

@Susan Anderson wonderful work, its a great thing to have security of a home base that you can *build on* with changing how things are done. Those who don't have security, who are in the private rental market need a helping hand from the rest of us... such as rezoning regulations successfully used in Portland Oregon to create affordable, sustainable housing *in places where housing already exists*. Community led conversion of poorly functioning estates into high functioning social and garden-productive areas in their localities. THAT i find very inspiring. Because it won't be until *everyone* can access what is currently only available to the settled, and relatively affluent portion of our society - that things will really change. I like the Portland model of transformative local government, responsive to their communities call for doiing things a little differently to achieve a hugely changed and incredibly positive outcome for residents.

Thank you so much for this documentary! I finally understand what is this missing part in my life. No matter what I did in my life, how hard I have worked, how much I have demanded from my body in sports, how many things I have purchased and then sold again. If you cannot connect with nature you will never be complete. What really opened my eyes was this phrase:
"The reunion that we long for is unavailable to us.
That is good for business because it drives consumerism, it drives acquisitiveness
it drives greed, it drives all kinds of neurotic behaviours
that seek to compensate for the missing relationships."

'Do what the soft animal of our body loves!'
I'm grateful to live in Oregon's green Willamette Valley, be able to garden and have access to a year round farmers Market.
This year I moved to my a little house at my daughter's, and have begun new gardens. I also tend a raised bed tea garden, (square, about a meter across) as part of a 28 bed 'Edible Landscaping' project - in spring we give away over 3000 plant starts and in fall produce ... town residents can stroll the street and pick what's ripe.
The project is a subset of Zeros Waste, which was begun by a fellow whose family heritage farm was next to the town dump. After returning to our community, he worked to find more sustainable solutions for Reducing, Reusing Recycling and composting.

I firmly believe that individuals, families, neighborhoods are best off if we take responsibility for our basic food security. Grow, forage what will keep you fed. ‘Trade” for the extras - spices, sugar, flour- nice to have but you can live with out. There are obviously barriers, not the least of which is control of land by people who don’t need it for food….yet. I so much appreciate this discussion.

I believe excess consumerism has a huge impact on climate change. Recycle and re-use of ALL material should be of upmost importance. Too many people purchase disposable items or uneccessary items that end up in landfill. Many want the latest or biggest item on the market whilst their used article is still functional and/or useful for example analog tv for a big screen Smart tv.

I'm back with a better attitude. I need to hear this information. I've wanted to turn my one third acre in zone 10b into a permaculture, food farm for my daughter and her kids. I'm going to be doing this by myself and I'm overwhelmed. Thank you each for your stories. I once loved gardening, preserving, cooking, sewing, etc. I don't do anything anymore because of depression, social anxiety and isolation. I'm inspired by the video stories and viewers' comments. I'm so fortunate to give this a second go. I learned a lot and needed to see that others are realizing their dreams by giving back to the earth. Thank you all.

Some of the parallels are in the book called “WILD KINSHIP: Biophilia, Inner Knowings and Our True Nature”
The book talks about many of the things we don’t even talk about, for instance how our own biology is rebelling against this “unnatural” way of living. And the strength we have when we align ourselves with who we truly are as human animals.

Thank you so much for making this film Free! I enjoyed watching it and have been trying to become more self-sufficient, and being more nature minded. It is everyone's duty to take care of this planet, and our own little space that we habitate. This film has given me more ideas on what I can do to improve my own life of lowering my footprint.

@Linda Kinda you might also like to check out Small is Beautiful, by EF Schumacher. This classic book is one of the early signposts for those of us who were starting out in life in the seventies and eighties. Basically, very similar message to this video series.

👍👍 Excellent work with this film 😀 I like how it is presented by the different views of our current reality. It does not say that this or that are the ultimate solutions to climate change or food economics or natural resources abuse. Instead it presents the viewers of a very promising possibility - what if each individual, on this only planet we've got, wakes up to the reality of our global crises and do our parts, big and small, in averting a humans-made disaster and at the same time bring ourselves closer back to Eden, the paradise God created in the very beginning? And all we have to give up in exchange are our greed, selfishness, arrogance and indifference. I wonder what the world would look like if land was equally distributed to each family, not as "property to own" but a sustaining treasure to steward, where they grow food for their own needs and the needs of their local community.

Not 'nearing' the end - the party ended hours ago, the house burned down, the SWAT Team is here, and the neighborhood has evacuated. But the rich folks in the biggest house on the block are still carrying on as if everything is fine.
