  • In our very first podcast episode Meg and Patrick of Artist as Family join us for a conversation on community resilience and the opportunities for change that the pandemic presents.

You might remember Meg and Patrick from our film Creatures of Place ( • Living a Radically Sim... ) that we made back in 2018. Today they're joining us from their home, Tree Elbow, on Djaara people’s land in Victoria, Australia.
We love the way these guys choose to live and interact with their community - they’re inspiring role models for us and they were the obvious choice for first guests on our new podcast.
One of the critical things we talked about was the difference between self-sufficiency and community sufficiency.
Meg: “How do we practice community sufficiency, what does that look like when it’s just us here, how do we look after each other in a non digital way in a very, very real practical sense? We’re so privileged here to live like this. How do we share that? In a time where everybody is physically distanced, what does generosity look like?”
Patrick: “Resilience is community sufficiency it’s not self sufficiency, so while we have twelve years of preparing for collapse on this particular lot in Central Victoria and within the community gardens and the community forests that we’re involved in and there’s food everywhere … feral foods and the huge amount of learning over the last twelve years we’ve put into edible flora and fauna and fungi - it’s so good to have that, that’s our main bank apart from our seed bank, our cellar and our garden and our community, but to be shut off so radically from community at the moment is definitely a… I feel a sense of vulnerability with that.”
It was really great to talk about that vulnerability with two people who are, despite feeling the vulnerability, deeply resilient in so many ways. We can’t all be prepared for every situation the future might bring, but we can choose to live in a way that is positive and loving and supportive of our selves and all the beings around us.

Thanks Patrick and Meg and the makers of Happen Films.
There’s so much in this 1hr plus video.
Patrick, you are right. There has been a monoculture of ‘human culture’, whereby the usual dominant forces suck all the oxygen out of the story-telling space.
Diversity is healthy in all spheres.
Thank you for this wonderful discussion, which clearly has been going on well before the pandemic, but is being brought out into the light.
May the magic be with you all.
May we all remember and feed the inner child.

Thanks all for this lovely, inspiring conversation! It is so comforting to hear how you, Meg and Patrick, are still transitioning. I sometimes get impatient because I think we aren’t going fast enough. But first of all my husband needs lots more time transitioning than I do and although we live among very nice neighbours, most of them are not interested in anything permaculture or just sustainability. I hope by living the way we do we can inspire people as well.
I love the three things you mentioned, Meg, grow food, catch rainwater and say hello to your neighbours. All three are firmly embedded in our lives. 💜
Thanks for all the wonderful films, Jordan and Antoinette! Thanks for all the sharing, Meg and Patrick (and Woody and Zero as well)!

I really loved Creatures of Place with Meg, Patrick and Woody. This podcast is amazing, thank you. I am knitting as I watch this. I always felt that I was on the right path by trying to grow as much as I could in my little garden, try to live a simple life, re-use, recycle, make, and lately really thinking about what I was purchasing. But Patrick and Meg really brought a couple of things home - the grief one feels when we decide to change and do without something (black tea is huge for me as I lived in Pakistan and i immigrated to Ontario, Canada), and more importantly where do we go from here. Looking seriously at our future because, it may seem everything will go back to ‘normal’, and perhaps it will for a bit, but this is just one thing to happen on a global scale. And I love the really positive message that we all have a skill to share, something we can do to share and contribute. Thank you both so much, thanks to Meg and Patrick as well. Looking forward to more of your Podcasts. Stay well.

    Beautiful video!
Covid pandemic has had different impacts on people and the earth. It has slowed down the busy lives of people, many people lost their lives and their livelihood.
But at the same time it has reduced global world pollution, lot of wild animals are freely moving on the streets as they see no humans around and don't feel threatened and scared to come out.
We need to understand the importance of balancing and sustaining life for human growth along with caring for our natural resources and surrounding.

Search for the good in the bad... I am hopeing this pandemic will develop a different generation of children that will not have the level of entitlement that the past generations (as you say from baby boomers). I'm nearly 50 and I have wished for the huge range of unnecessary products in our supermarkets to be interrupted.... For people to realise that we are not entitled to anything at any time. Also travel and tourism though amazing is also not something we are entitled to.
And to be so aware of how privileged we are to have our houses to self isolate in... There are millions who do not....
I did not vote for our government in Australia but I am grateful for them right now.... They are so problematic but there are millions in the world who have far worse governments and broken medical systems.
Love listening to all of you, and wish you health and safety..... And breathe deeply 🙏💙🌱🌺

May be, It's been imposed FOR all so we learn TRUE LESSONS of what we are doing and mostly think if our "alternative" ways are IN FACT AND NOT ONLY IN SPEECH, ALTERNATIVE!
There are many things that are called alternative but they are the same just with a cosmetic difference. If it wasn't like that, there should be NO DOUBT OR WORRY, but because there is worry and doubt shows that not only going to live in the forest or living in a camp van or a tiny house and having a garden, etc., is synonymous of understanding of life and the big questions of life. Perhaps we have not come to just build, grow food, dress like hippies, make money, sell organic food, etc, but there is a more profound and transcendent propose for being in the Earth that is really common to all beyond the superficial differences that for being superficial are not really "alternative" because at the core they continue to support the system we pretend to "change" or be an "alternative" of it. (If it was Truly alternative and different, why there is doubt and fear for others nd one self?) Perhaps the change does not come from the outside in but the opposite. And this is time for EVERYONE to STOP AND REMAIN STILL, because even the "alternative" characters NEVER REST AND ARE ALWAYS DOING. May be...

It is so depressing that society has not learned the lessons of pre covid. Society is back to normal even playing catch up here for the year 'lost' to covid.
