    Sigma 16mm is an amazing and great lens but its not too practical for video on the ZV-E10 as it is heavy and lacks stabilization. It needs software cropped stabilization or a heavy gimbal for good video footage. For a wide lens video replacement I always prefer the Sony 16-55mm for video for both reasons. I own both lenses.

    2 questions: Why would you choose between lense IS and internal IS? Can't you use both at the same time? Or does that mean you crop a lot? The second one: it seems most are interested in shallow DOF. Coming from action cams I really love to have a massive, nearly infinite DOF. What lenses fall into that category?

    • @FocusCameraTV
      @FocusCameraTV  2 роки тому +1

      Hello, happy to help in anyway. For question one, lens IS will add additional stabilization along with your camera's in body IBIS, but will indeed add additional cropping. I personally don't always think the lens IS is worth it, i'd just prefer to shoot on a gimbal or trust myself handheld, but that comes down to personal preference. As for shooting with a lot of DOF, any lens really has the capability to do this, it just means you will shoot with a really low F-stop (anything between F8 - F22 will likely do it). This of course means less light will get into your camera, so you'll have to compensate in other ways such as bumping your ISO or lowering your shutter speed... Hope this helps!

    Do you have any experience using the Sony ZV-E10 with the Samyang 24mm f1.8? Would that camera and lens be great for videography? Any thoughts?

  • @tadbubs

    Brendon, that was badass. The way you segmented and gave samples of each lens was brilliant. Heya, I'll be filming full body shot exercise videos in a playground setting (host stands about3-4 meters away). I want to blur as much of the background as possible so viewers will not get distracted. But, I like the texture and colors of the background vs starkness of studio. What are your thoughts? 56mm? Oh and yes, I also have the Sony ZV-E10. Thanks.

    • @FocusCameraTV
      @FocusCameraTV  2 роки тому +1

      Sorry for a late response here! I think if you're going to get the talent's full-body in the shot, going with something wider may be a better option as there's also the 1.5x crop, making it a pretty long lens. Something in the 16-35mm range could be your best friend here. Also, shooting between f/2.8-f/4 will likely still give you the background separation you want while also giving your lens a bit more room to focus on the subject's full body. Highly recommend an ND when shooting outdoors as well. Hope this helps :)

      @@FocusCameraTV Brendon I followed your advice and opted for a wider angle lens. So-as not to burst my budget, I went for the Samyang SY12M-E-BK 12mm F2.0. Your thoughts? If its a bust I'll just return it to Amazon. Last question. How necessary is it to have both the Sigma 16mm and 30mm (talking head and in-studio/desk videos)? I like the newscaster intimacy of the 30mm but, with the ZV-E10's new cropping features is the 30mm really necessary?

  • @AlainWashnevsky

    Thank you. I'm about to get the ZV E10. If I get only one lense which one would you recommend? We are about to go traveling. My main priority is filming auditions. That is done on a tripot. Cinematic look, being able to blur out the background and good with low light. And it would be nice if it could also be used for when we are out and about to take pics of us and surroundings etc. Thank you

    • @FocusCameraTV
      @FocusCameraTV  2 роки тому

      For something like auditions, the 30mm is going to give you the most natural look on your subjects and at f1.4 you'll get nice background separation as well as good low light performance. I think that is a great place to start.

    You can still zoom with a prime lens right? It’s just more so a digital zoom? Through the camera? But that’s still different than how a smart phone does a digital zoom right? I’m not sure lol. Not that I would need it but I’m just curious about the way it works. I don’t zoom on my smart phone camera because I know it degrades the quality.

    Informative video. Thank you. Question for you. Other than a wider aperture, is there any reason not just to get the zoom lens instead of buying four prime lenses? It seems like you would save money. Is the image quality better on a prime?

    • @gigihanmandarin
      @gigihanmandarin 2 роки тому

      That's an answer only you yourself can answer with your use cases. The arguments are: a prime lens, by itself, generally will be cheaper, lighter and offer a better quality than a zoom lens. If you shoot in a studio mostly, or primarily just vlogging, a prime may be your answer. In these settings, a zoom lens maybe too bulky and you may not utilize the zoom range it offers.
      If your use cases require you to change focal length often and quickly, like for example shooting a wedding, then you need a zoom lens (maybe 2 zoom lenses for wide and telephoto settings).
      Can you list out your use cases so I can chip in a little opinion?

      @@gigihanmandarin Thank you. I use my camera in my UA-cam studio. Then I use it when I'm out and about hiking and kayaking and shooting bike events. It seems that a prime is going to be best for the studio and then a zoom for my run and gun type situations.

      That's a really good question. As always it depends on exactly what you're doing, but people who stand by prime lenses usually need that wider aperture wether it's for low-light performance or stylistically they really like to get the creamest bokeh possible. I do also tend to think a solid prime usually performs a bit better than its zoom counterpart in the overall sharpness category. However, zoom lenses are getting much better now. For example, Tamron's new 35-150mm is a great lens with a fast aperture and sharp through its focal range. There's a lot of factors that go into it, and if budget is your number one priority, a versatile zoom lens is a great choice.

      Hello, glad you enjoyed the video. I'll keep it brief here, and you should always do your own research in addition, but here are some recs to get your journey started: 1) Sony makes a great 20mm 2.8 pancake lens that is really easy on your budget that would be great for vlogging, but if you can afford it they also make a 20mm 1.8 that gets a lot of love. The downside of the Sigma 16mm I mention in this video is it's size, but as a quality lens I did love it as well. 2) Any of the primes I mention in this video are going to be good options here as they all stop down to around f1.8 + plus your zve10 ain't a bad low-light camera in addition. 3) the 18-105mm I mention in the video is a zooming beast and has the electronic zoom rocker, so can't go wrong there. Sony did just drop a new 16mm-35mm with an electronic zoom, but going to be more pricey.
      Hope this helps get you started!

    • @FocusCameraTV
      @FocusCameraTV  2 роки тому +1

      Sounds like a wide lens would be good for shots like this. In which case I really like the 16mm mentioned in this video as you can stop down to f/1.4 and shoots relatively wide. However, when it comes to lighting, camera gear can only do so much. To really bring videos to the next level, I really recommend researching how to get the most out of a starter lighting kit. Having even a basic lighting set up does so much to elevate the production value of a shoot and often creators look to camera gear first (which is understandable), but ignore fundamental lighting. Investing in even a modest light kit can go a long way :)... I hope this helps and please feel free to ask any more questions you may have!

    IMO the best Sony vlogging lens is Samyang/Rokinon 12mm F2 AF. Light weight/small size, 18mm FF equivalent ultrawide perfect for walking and talking distance. Sony's OSS is junk with video anyway so you don't lose anything when this Samyang does not come with OSS stabilization. When you decide to skip Catalyst Browse and use Active Stabilization, you head will still not fill up the whole frame.

      Any of these lenses would be good for low-light because most go down to f1.4, however I'd highly recommend the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for a great, natural looking image. For wide angle, we did love the 16mm but there are some other great options people have been posting in this comment section below. As for an outdoor, sunny shoot, any lens that can manage lens flare wells will do, but I highly recommend investing in an ND filter!

      This lens is good but I don't think you will need to go that wide or that long for what you are shooting, rather I'd recommend either the 30mm or 56mm lenses to get the most natural looking/best quality image. Also, lighting will be very important if not more important than your camera gear, don't forget ;)

    Super helpful. If you were doing two person interviews from a distance of about 10 ft both indoors and outdoors which lens would you pair with your ZVE 10? I was debating between the Sigma 16 and the Sigma 30. I've also seen references to Rokinon and Sam Young. Because I travel, portability is critical.

    • @FocusCameraTV
      @FocusCameraTV  2 роки тому +2

      Hey! For interview style videos at that distance we would recommend the Sigma 30mm because at 10 feet the 16mm may be a bit too wide and that 30mm will give you a nice, natural looking image for your subjects. You can find the lens here: www.focuscamera.com/sigma-30mm-f-1-4-dc-dn-contemporary-for-sony-e-mount.html ... It's a very affordable option. You also can't go wrong with the Sony 18-105mm f/4 as it'll give you the most options all in one lens. Also, for shooting outdoors, consider getting an ND filter as well! Let us know if you have any other questions :)

      Also, I’m confused because that should equal 24mm but the product description says that it’s 24mm and 32 equivalent. Is that an error or is that some other factor thing I’m not familiar with? It says that on your site as well as Amazon.

    Question for you. What lenses would be good options to get depth of field in a bedroom sized studio? Specifically for shooting video.
    Newer to interchangable lenses. I was considering the sigma 16 mm f1. 4
    If this isn't possible that's ok, I just wanted to see what my best option is.

      Sony recently dropped three new ultra-wide angle lenses: the 10-20mm f/4 pz, the 15mm f/1.4, and the 11mm f/1.8... I would for sure check those out in addition to the Sigma 16 f1.4

      @@FocusCameraTV thank you. Will definitely take a look into those.
      Edit: I will have to double check but would the 11mm cause a fish eye effect? I think it would be around 17mm equivalent.

      We were very torn between the 18-105mm and the 18-135mm! We ended featuring the 18-105mm because we liked the constant aperture of f/4, but the 18-135mm is also a great option at that price point. Thanks for the comment!
