I bought the 30mm first and I think that was the best choice for me, then I bought the 16mm and now Im thinking about getting the 56mm! It looks amazing! I can't wait.
Your video really helped me to make a choice. I'm starting a project and definitely will start with the 56 mm as I'm doing portrait photography In addition with the kit lens of CANON M6 Mark II 15 mm-45 mm. Thank you so much
I went with the 16mm for my gym recording. Because of the short distance between me and the cam, I needed the 16mm :-) But: Just ordered the 30mm for more leeway.
I have been using the sigma 56 for over 2 years now and its hands down my favourite lens for sony apsc. It is a little tight sometimes, but it still allows me to capture moments in time that draw the eye into the frame and make someone feel the picture. The subject seperation and sharpness it offers is just not matched by any apsc lens.
I had the 30mm 1.4 and wanted to use it as my only lens for my A6000 but I returned it and will try the 56mm 1.4 next for the same reason. The 30mm can do everything and can actually be used as your only lens, but I had the feeling that it didn't had character. Seeing Stuart's pictures with it it's clear that I have to improve my photography and you can get way better results that what I had so far, but also seeing his 56mm shots the look makes you truly feel you're getting into the photo. Can't explain myself better but it just feels better to my eye. I'd still like to own the whole trio one day but for now I want to stick to one lens and improve with that and, doing solely portraits, I feel the subject separation you're talking about is exactly what draws me to this lens more than the 30mm :)
I completely agree. It is a superb lens! Esspecially portraits look so detailed and pro when you take them with this lens! I do shoot them at around f4 , looks best imo.
You just helped me decide between getting the 30mm and the 56mm. Already own a 16 mm and since i am not that into portraits and rather more into videography, 30mm sounds like thebest for now. Thanks mate!
56mm is my favourite but if you have none, start with the 30mm. You can get some wider shots and also portraits with DOF. 16mm is 24mm in FF land - quite wide and 56mm is very tight and a perfect 85mm equivalent.
Nice video. Recently bought the zv-e10. Came with the kit lens and Sony 50mm-210mm zoom lens. Both are decent but not the best for indoors where the environment isn't well lit or low light as the images come out noisy. Couldn't decide between the 16 or 30 but after watching this video I think I'll go with the 30. Thanks for the advice!
Thank you for this video. I purchased the 30mm as my first out of the 3 and love it. I’ve been wanting to add another lens to my collection but have been torn between the 16mm and the 56mm. Very informative comparison
Hello Stuart, took your advise on the 30mm lens, very happy with the image quality coming out of it with the sony alpha 6700. Your detailed comparisons helped a lot. Cheers mate!
Hey, how's the lens with the a6700? Specially can you tell me about the stabilisation of this lens with the a6700? Planning to buy this for potraits and cinematic videos
@@aritraroy7841 Hey, the camera does a pretty good job of stabilising and autofocus especially with the videos. For the portraits it’s a definite thumbs up.
If on Full frame: Get 30mm for Landscapes/Cityscapes/ vlogging. 16mm for super wide. Apsc: 16mm for Landscapes / vlogging etc..Will be equivalent of 24mm
I'm currently looking to get my first real camera and your point on the 16mm looking to close to a smartphone angle is exactly what I thought. If I want decently sharp wide angle photos, a smartphone can do that. Now of course, with a little bit of skill, you can make better photos on a camera with a 16mm lens, but the larger focal lengths are where the looks are created that you cannot get on a smartphone. And BIG THANK YOU for that comparison shot at 9:07, watched a lot of videos about lenses by now and this one shows the difference off the best.
a smartphone can nail a lot of what a 16mm can do, if you just want basic landscapes. however, if you want your shallow DOF in a distant region, with heavy bokeh in the foreground, or you want the pic focused on an object that is literally inches from your eyes, that is where the 16mm shines. but he's right in that the 30mm is extremely versatile. don't have your 16mm? just step back a bit. don't have your 56mm, just get a bit closer. fantastic lens.
I think I'm gonna go with the 16mm. Probably won't use it for portraits though. More so street photography/landscapes + I already have a 50mm for those portraits. Appreciate the comparison!
Man, I can't appreciate this video more! I currently own a FUJI XT-3 with its 18-55 kit lens. I was confused b/w the 30mm & 56mm. After watching this I think I'm gonna go with the 56mm as portraits & that creamy bokeh is what I'm looking for at the moment. Thank you!
I have this trio for both Sony and MFT. Great on both formats, but because the focal length equivalents are different, the way they are used is also different. On MFT they are 32mm, 60mm, and 112mm. The 30 is my least favorite because it is too heavy. The 56 is my favorite. A fantastic portrait lens on both formats.
Great video! Your FOV comparison video with the Sigma trio is also very helpful. I recently got the 16 and 56, just days after my a6100. I got the 16 mainly for guitar-videos. While it does take awesome pictures I simply craved the 56, as I knew it would fit my style of photography perfectly. Because of it’s size it makes a cute and small setup with the a6100, yet packing a serious punch. For street photography it’s amazing so if that’s your style, just get it and you won’t regret it!
I’m there just thinking about which one to buy 30 or 56 because I like a lot street photography (I have been thinking about portrait and products but I’m too shy yet haha). Probably I think I will go for the 56mm
@@enmachs Optically, it’s the better lens. If you like to include more of the surroundings the 23mm is perfect as it’s a 35mm FF-equivalent, typical for street photography and environmental portraits. With both of these, you can pretty much do anything.
i too got the 16mm first, and i absolutely love it! HOWEVER, lol, it lacks the diversity of the 30mm, for the reasons you stated. so, whenever i'm on trips, the 30mm is my go-to. for portraits, i actually use the 70-200 sigma. it's easily my favorite lens! it's pricey, but it's just fun, and the end results look insane. great vid btw. subbed!
Great review. Watching this two years on. First video I found of yours and loved the presentation! Sharing a bit of your work was nice - also helped it was gorgeous stuff! When you said "wiked" I was sold! Think I'm going with the 30mm
I used to own the trio, when I was shooting with my Canon M50. I now own the Canon R6 and I really, really miss those small, affordable and brilliant APS-C lenses!
i debated selling my trio as i have ff now as well as apsc, but i cant let them go lol. they are so small and render amazing results in such a light package i find myself grabbing MY M62 with these 3 lenses often still
My holy trinity of primes would be 35, 85, and 135mm. 35 is the widest befor leading lines and distortion, 85 can render better than a 50 and the 135 for the ultimate separation.
I have the set of three. And I agree, the 30mm and 56mm are the most useful. The 16mm will be amazing for some astro shots, though. Thank you for a really good review. 👍 And your video style from your short clips is 👌. Paul 😎
Bought the sigma 10-18 for my first lens for a6700 for my recent trip to Dubai. Perfect lens for all the architecture pics. The 30 and 56mm seem like nice additions but I think I want a bit more flexible zoom range to make it easier to travel. Tamron 18-300mm might fit the bill. Not as sharp unfortunately.
Excellent video, thank you from Brazil! I just bought the sony zve10 and it's about to arrive, I bought the 16mm and it was between the 56 and the 30mm, I opted for the 30mm because it's more versatile and doesn't have the interruption of the 16.
Very informative video. I shoot with Fuji XT30-II and XT3. My usual walk around lens these days is the Sigma 18-50. I decided to add the Sigma 30mm for low light. So far so good.
Hey Stuart! Again, thanks for the video! I'm now the owner of the 16mm and 30mm. Had the 16mm for a half year and I loved it! Sometimes the only disadvantage I experienced was that it's to for away from my subjects. Because of your videos I bought the 30mm! Still trying it, so... Amazing stuff you do!
The 16mm has a hard competitor at least for the Canon M50: the Canon 22mm 2.0 that is tiny, lighter, cheaper and excellent too. I own the 56mm and I am impressed by the quality of the images, but used to take photos with a 22mm or a 15-45mm I need to change the way I work as I need to increase the speed and grab the camera specially firmly or I can get a blurry image more times than I would like. So for me the 56mm is challenging, but satisfying.
Have all Sigma trio and viltrox 23 1.4. If you don't know why buy 16mm just buy viltrox and 30 + 56mm. Mostly enough (I don't use 16mm at all. I have 12mm f2 for real estate). Pity that sigma still don't have 23 f 1.4. Updated from my old a6000 to a6600. Yes it's expensive, yes IBIS is more likely uselesss. But battery life is outstanding. Now thinking to buy second a6600 to replace a6000 as a second camera.
My low budget setup plan would be to use the kit lens if ever I want to try vlogging since I don't really feel that its worth spending for the extra sharpness for a shakier video and save my money for a good prime in the area of 23-30mm in which this sigma 30 is a great candidate for.
Wow the quality of video in your short films is fantastic using the 30mm lens. I have a Sony A6000 but I haven’t been blown away with the video quality it’s 1080p and has no log mode. Does the A6500 have a log profile? I have also had the A6000 overheat on me while using it as a B cam at a concert that was stressful 🤣. Is the A6500 better for video in your opinion? Thanks Glenn
Stuart, I’ve been leaning towards the 16mm for my Dj streaming sets , but now you’ve got me thinking about the 30mm. I want to do some shorts for UA-cam and TikTok as well, what would you recommend?
This video made me choose 30mm first, then 56mm, then maybe later 16mm because vlogging isn't my thing yet. Hopefully the 30mm is good enough for travel photos. I would have to just stand far away.

Great video. If we’ll be shooting (or filming) mainly 2 people would you recommend 16 or 30mm?
Either will work - it just depends how much room you have to work with. I made this 5 years ago with just the 30mm which might come in useful: ua-cam.com/video/wmDLyJ5S1K0/v-deo.htmlsi=tGSFGyVuc2itLrOp
I loved your video and subscribed to your channel. Thank you for the fluid and very professional explanation you gave when making the video. Congratulations. I would just like to ask your personal opinion, as a lover and beginner of portrait photography. What is the ideal format to obtain a photo where there is still some surroundings. 4:3 , 1:1 , 16:9 ... thanks a lot, Luis from Portugal 🤜🤛
@@StuartRodwell I just got the 30mm today and I love it! Thanks to your video I learned a lot and helped me made the decision. Wanted something for my family, something for casual and travel photos with the kids. I think I'll also use it in a studio set up soon.
I would totally get the 30 for my Olympus but unfortunately the micro four thirds version isn't weather sealed. For some reason the L and the X mount versions are the only ones that are weather sealed. The 50 is weather sealed for all mounts.
I own these 3 lenses and I'm recording a B-roll clip of a theater sign tonight. It is at the top of a small building. I don't want to show anything else in the shot but the sign. If you read this in time, any recommendation for which lens for this purpose?
Hello! I got interested in your video and it made me bought my first ever lens which is sigma 30mm. I do have a question though because I was a cannon user and for some reason, the color on the Sony isn't as profound as the cannon one when taking that raw shot. May I happen to know what is the picture profile that you are using?
I am currently doubting between Sigma 24mm and 30mm. What would be your pros and cons for each? Currently I have Sony 16-50 kit lens which is fine for studio work, but I want a prime lense which will be as versatile as possible and perform great at low light. Thanks!
i was searching for 2 lenses for SONY ZV-E10. and this video is the only thing i needed as I was searching around for quite some time💝💝💝 THANKS A LOT MAN 🥰
Thanks very helpful, I am using "ZV-E10" want to shoot video like podcast and walk & talk interviews & Video byte from 5-7 feet which lens is better in Three of them. Please suggest
Hey great video sir, am a beginner got lill knowledge from videos. So helpful and I ordered a6400 and sigma 56 mm. Is that a good choice considering am more into taking photos? Not a professional btw.🙂
Saying my preferred lens doesn't reall make sense cause each lens got its on application. Of course the 30mm (45 in full frame) is the most useful but if for instance you need a panoramic with or witout a subject in the middle or to film a public in a small theater or in class room and have everybody inside the frame or simply want to shoot interior the 16 mm is the best option is not as good as a wide angle but still better than a 30mm. The 56 is less versatile but is the best lens. I filmed myself and without colour grading no one of my full frame users friends could believe was shot with a cropped sensor. Maybe in that particolar video I was lucky with my choice of lighting but without any doubt is an amazing lens with an exceptional depth of field. If u have the space Nd u can go back that extra metre or 2 the 56mm is better than the 56 but is just so much easier if u use only one camera wit one lens to keep the 30 mm on.
You were no lucky. Maybe good, but not lucky. 3 years ago I used my a6400 with a Sigma 56mm on a tripod to shoot a video of myself singing "Jingle bells" and pros using full ftame couldn't believe that was shot on crop sensor.
I saw 100s of videos and read as many articles before buying my first camera lens combination (a6400 and sigma 56 mm) about a month ago. I wish i had seen this video before my purchase. Although, I am happy with my 56 mm as the portraits coming out of it is just incredible but I struggle to get any picture inside my house and its bit too tight when used for street photography taking pictures of say bridges and buildings. I am now confused between getting tamron 17-70 or sigma 30 mm for indoor photography. After seeing this, i think i should go for 30 mm. I am mostly trying to learn street and portrait photography. Please advise. Thanks.
Whilst it has good reviews, I opted for the Sigma 18-50 2.8 over the Tamron because of its more compact size. The 30mm however will be better in low light and produce more bokeh.
I have the sigma 16mm and then the zve10 kit lens. I do video and photo as a hobby, and also for my UA-cam channel. I’m going on vacation and want to get a second lens to have some versatility. I’m mainly going to shoot architecture and people. What would be the best prime lens to get to complement the 16mm?

Phenomenal video, and channel mate. You’re incredibly talented. Cheers brother!
Thanks so much for the feedback 🙏🏻
Hello. Thank you for your information. Which camera and lens are you using in this video? I would be happy if you could answer.
I now have the 16mm and 56mm because of you, idol
Watching from 🇵🇭 Philippines
Hey Philipines 🇵🇭! Blows my mind that people are watching across the globe - I’m so grateful 🙏🏻
Got the 56 first, then the 16 (due to having canon's 32). I still ordered the 30 recently to complete the set and for night photos.
Great review thx. I have the 16 and 30 hope to add the third one soon!
I have zve10m2 I bought 11mm for astro landscape, kit 16-50 for all around day, tamron 18-300 for travel... So what i need? What to choose ;)
Great review and awesome body of work Stu - keep it up!
Thanks so much Nick 🙏🏻
The 16mm has a hard competitor at least for the Canon M50: the Canon 22mm 2.0 that is tiny, lighter, cheaper and excellent too. I own the 56mm and I am impressed by the quality of the images, but used to take photos with a 22mm or a 15-45mm I need to change the way I work as I need to increase the speed and grab the camera specially firmly or I can get a blurry image more times than I would like. So for me the 56mm is challenging, but satisfying.
Thanks!
You’re welcome!
Great video mate. You've helped me decide on my first lens purchase!!
That’s awesome. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
GREAT video and extremely informative.
Which of these three lenses would be great for flower photography?
I got all 3 because of you AND bought your Lightroom preset pack. THANK YOU!
Thanks so much for the support - much appreciated 🙏🏻
This has been the most helpful vid thank you!
Thanks so much man 🙏🏻
Stuart, I’ve been leaning towards the 16mm for my Dj streaming sets , but now you’ve got me thinking about the 30mm.
@ that is perfect!! 30mm it is then! Thank you 💙
I loved your video and subscribed to your channel.
This video is very helpful for a beginner like me. Thanks mate!
Glad it was helpful!
@@StuartRodwell I just got the 30mm today and I love it! Thanks to your video I learned a lot and helped me made the decision. Wanted something for my family, something for casual and travel photos with the kids. I think I'll also use it in a studio set up soon.
You’re very informative! Thank you for all your video, examples and advice. 🤙🏼🙏🏼
Thanks so much James 🙏🏻
I would totally get the 30 for my Olympus but unfortunately the micro four thirds version isn't weather sealed. For some reason the L and the X mount versions are the only ones that are weather sealed. The 50 is weather sealed for all mounts.
Ive got a 50mm with my a6400..i don't regret it but it's not the most versatile specially when filming in the studio ..it's so tight
Awesome video filled with alot of valuable information. Keep crushing it! 👊
Thanks Kamil 🙌🏻

Hey wondering which would be best for food photography?!
Thanks!
i was searching for 2 lenses for SONY ZV-E10. and this video is the only thing i needed as I was searching around for quite some time💝💝💝
THANKS A LOT MAN 🥰
Glad it came in useful man 🙌🏻
subbed. cheers. where in the uk can you buy the sigma 30?
are your barbershop b-rolls handheld? How did you make it look so stabilized?
Thank you for making this video!
Glad it was helpful 🙌🏻
Thanks very helpful, I am using "ZV-E10" want to shoot video like podcast and walk & talk interviews & Video byte from 5-7 feet which lens is better in Three of them. Please suggest
Hi mate, i just want to take pictures of trainers on feet, which mm do you think Is best?
no OSS for vlogging is painful though. not sure if that's the best option here...
Hey great video sir, am a beginner got lill knowledge from videos. So helpful and I ordered a6400 and sigma 56 mm. Is that a good choice considering am more into taking photos? Not a professional btw.🙂
Thanks so much for watching, appreciate it 🙌🏻. I think you'll love that combo 👍🏻
Would you trade the sigma trio for a tamron 17-70mm 2.8 for travel/street photography?
Excuse me, I already have SIGMA 18-50, Do I need to buy 30mm f1.4?
I bought 11mm and 18-300 for travel. I have same question what now
@@martinezq1 I ended up picking up the 30mm sigma and might eventually finish the trio with the 50mm
this was very usefull information thank you
Glad it was helpful 🙌🏻
Thanks for the Advises ,
I am from France .
I bought the 30mm and just bought 56mm bought useful on different ways😊.
Your preset can i used it on Mobile cause i don't have a laptop for the moment ?
I luv your presets 😊
Hey France! 🇫🇷 hope you’re enjoying the lenses, they are both amazing.
Yes, my presets come with DNG files that can be used on Lightroom Mobile 👍🏻
@@StuartRodwell Hello,
I need a advise I got 3 lenses for my sony A6600 a Sigma 30mm,56mm in 1.4 and Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 I do same kind of photo like you portraits and also street photo , I am planning to buy my last lense a Sigma 70-180mm in 2.8 .(for sport photos ).
Don't you think that i have to sell one of my 2 lenses between the 30 and 56mm or if its you,you keep them all 😊.
Is it hard to install the presets on S23 Ultra ?
Thanks for your reply 🙏🏽
I have the 56mm Sigma with my Fuji XT30, and I can't film a video with it cause it has no OIS.. can you advice me??
Very helpful comparison, thank you 🙏😊
Thanks for watching 🙌🏻
Bro I want to start video production so confuse between 3 lemme know which one is best for cinematography please
Excellent video Stuart!!
I'm a little indecisive on getting my first lens I need it for when I'm on my hikes and I think the 16mm could that job although its weight might be uncomfortable while carrying it around. Which one do you think could work better for me while hiking? Thanks ;)
Thanks for watching Cindy 😊. Have you considered the kit lens? It’s cheap, light and works fairly well (provided you’re not in low light situations). Here’s a vid I made with some examples - hope it helps! ua-cam.com/video/6HehZ38k884/v-deo.html
Just get a zoom + prime
Get the 18-50 sigma
9:07 Esta comparativa es lo que estaba buscando. Gracias.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
This has been so incredibly helpful. I'd love to see a behind the scenes on how you set up this sort of shot. Background looks awesome
Are any of these lens good for club photography and video?
100% I’ve got the 30mm and already looking at the 56mm just like you I’m more of a 24mm apsc (35mm fullframe) or above kind of photographer…Oh…it is attached to a brand new a6400….
Just got part 1 of the trinity the Sigma 16mm 1.4
any thoughts on the 23 mm??
I have the sigma trio, but I'm thinking of replacing the 30mm with the 18-50mm, what do you think?
Personally I’d never part with my 30mm - it’s my go-to lens for 90% of my video work 👍🏻
New 18-50f2.8+ 56f1.4 solve all the problems
That's my route, plus the good old Sony 35f1.8 for compact casual or video. Covers most bases. Still have 55-210 and 12f2 for some more niche purposes.
Hi, which one will be the most suitable for shooting videos with the Sony ZV-E10? I'm thinking about 16 or 30mm. I'm not sure whether the Zhiyun crane m2s will handle the camera and the 16mm
