I bought my wife the Canon G5Xii. She used to use my Canon G11 when I was using my Canon 7D, even as a beginner she used it in full manual from the off, it was so easy to use. Unfortunately, my G11 suffered from the common fault of the dreaded scratched front element, caused by the sliding doors upon opening/closing, so it got retired. The newer G5 is a very similar form, just in a newer package with better features. I went to Fuji after the G11 with the X-Pro1, then the X-T1, bigger cameras but still smaller than my 7D, my wife detested the Fuji and lost all interest in shooting at the time until I bought her a Nikon J1 in white, a beautiful camera for a female. We’d shoot side by side and her smaller sensor would blow my Canon away in dynamic range, and colours, it honestly depressed me, that’s why I shot Fuji, I still use my X-T1 regularly, and it stands up against my Canon R6 no problem, image IQ, ISO performance is very very good against the Canon FF until 3200 when the newer Canon sensor pulling away, it is very useable up to 12.800 with modern cleaning up software, amazing for a wildlife shooter like me.
The more I'm seeing of the precautions tourists have to take now not to lose high-end mobile phones at the moment in Western Europe im thinking compact cameras will make a bit of a resurgence especially ones with good wifi upload apps ....ive still got a Samsung NX mini which is a great travel camera but being a bit dated it is lacking in the app features ..
I had the ZS/DS200, and while the 15x zoom works good in bright sunlight, I was soooo disappointed when trying to shoot indoor concerts of my kid’s orchestra recital from the stands. No matter what I did I couldn’t get an in-focus shot. I thought the 1 in sensor would work for me, but the slow aperture f3.3-6.4 on the Leica lens really holds this camera back. I liked the 4k video photo feature, the post focus feature, and the 4k video quality was impressive (best 4k video I had ever seen), but the rolling shutter, (jello effect), was atrocious, and the 4k hand held stabilization was very shakey (You have to get a gimbal). Also this thing really picks up wind noise when shooting video outdoor and it doesn’t have a mic input to help audio quality, wind reduction feature did nothing to help. Also the auto focus in video would do this weird thing from time to time where it would loose focus for no reason and hunt to regain, (strange). I did also see pulsing from time to time. I did like the close focus ability(macro), and the colors in day light were really something to behold, but it really let me down shooting indoors, (birthday parties, around house, concerts, restaurants, museums). If this was used as an outdoor, landscape, street, camera in bright daylight it would be fine. I saw a lot of features I really liked but it still left me wanting more from it than what I got. I returned it, as it was still $550 new.
I got the Ricoh gr III and you can get good deals on it around the used market, I paid around 650USD for a used one (6 months old and in mint condition). This Camera beats most of the compact cameras TBH, is the smallest APS-C with 24 mpx, and it has insane focus when you get used to the snap focus features and also the IBIS is next level in this one so it's good for low light shooting. If you like photography this is the best option, but it's useless for video, don't even try.
I got myself a used Canon M6 for around 300 earth units, extra 90 for a used 22mm pancake, that resolves like a 35mm, and an extra 90 for a used evf that fits to the shoe mount. A nice small 24mp APS-C RAW setup for 480 earth units all in. I can take off evf and make it smaller, and even use a toy body cap lens for an even smaller setup. If I were to upgrade now then it would be a Canon R, Ricoh GRIIIx or Fujifilm x100v, as they have sadly stopped doing the Canon M camera - but the Canon M6 II is an option, currently around 600, few extra features on the M6, like using it as a webcam.
The EOS M5 is superb and the 22mm super sharp. Add in the versatile 11 to 22 IS for architecture and the like and the 55-200mm for long reach (also IS) and you have a complete kit for everything from street to travel. It’s not 4K but gives great IS HD. My little kit is off to China next week alongside my new (superb) Fuji X100VI. In black that’s a very low profile tool for city and night shots and the film recipes amazing. Finally, an iPhone 15 promax is a fantastic tool for most daylight usage. Cinema mode is very easy and of course it’s always the camera you have with you….if you can afford it I guess. The 13 pro second hand with a decent memory is still a solid option.
@@andrewcrossley2448 Thanks for reply. Enjoy your adventures away, it will be cool with that setup. EDIT: I am tempted by the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, has a camera slotted attachment with trigger and extra battery, 1" sensor, made with Leica with Leica modes. Seems like the phone camera king is back.
Great roundup! I’m narrowed down my search to the Ricoh’s and the Sony RX 100 MVII. My girlfriend has had the original RX100MI since its release and it still works flawlessly. My problem is is the times when I want a 28 and times I’ll want a 40. Yes, I’ll probably end up getting the Sony by default. I would love if Ricoh would pop even a moderate zoom lens on that camera, it would be heaven!
The Panasonic Lumix ZS60 is a bit older but has a 24-720mm equivalent lens in the same size body as the ZS200D. I have it, and it takes great photos with good light. I have all black but there's a version with silver at the top, which gives that touch of vintage look.
Very tight video. Once you start spending a grand, then it's time to think about used cameras. But the best pics I've taken were always because I had my camera with me. For the last week, I've been posting on my Facebook Vintage Camera group one pic a day from my Canon Elph 310..I have a pile of Fuji X gear with new and vintage glass, but I'm not taking it out. (Good reasons I don't need to get into) The 310 has an 8x optical, IBIS, 1080p video, 12 meg pics. Winners. And who doesn't love the macro on these old cameras? Just keep pocket lint off your zoom lenses, people. It gets sucked back to the sensor and you can't remove it.
Do you know a camera similar to the R50 that is protected / sealed from weather. I'd like to continue my recordings even if it rains or is there any hacks for it? Thanks for your videos, you explain well for beginners like myself.
This is a GREAT review. I’ve always loved my Canon pocket cameras. How about the Fujifilm x-m1? It’s APS-C without a low pass filter for awesome quality images. Stick on the cheap xc-15-45mm zoom (22-70mm equivalent) and you are on fire. It has a tilt screen too.
Very similar cameras. G5XII has an EVF and it has 20mm extra on the longer end of the focal length whereas the G7XIII does not have those things but does have a mic input. I wouldn't go for the G7XIII unless I was going to do content creation and really needed the MIC port.
That’s a bummer. BH lists the G5 X Mark II as ‘No Longer Available’ as opposed to ‘Out of Stock/Back Ordered.’ Any other suggestions as far as vacation/friend/family/picture-snapping cameras??
The number one slot still needs to be a compact camera. We know you can get larger cams to do the job. The RX100 is the number one slot where an all-round minimal compromise solution is there. Cheers
I bought the Lumix TZ as a daily to keep in my pocket and chopped it in after a few months for a used Sony a6000 as a daily instead.. the Lumix is a right faff to use and I missed so many shots with it... used to a DSLR in manual mode and really struggled with fiddly little lumix.
I Just dove into the details on the Sony RX100 VII, and I've got to say, while I'm all in for investing in top-notch tech, there's a bit of a letdown here. The operating system feels surprisingly dated, like something out of the 90s, which is a bit of a shocker for a brand that stands at the forefront of the camera world. And then there's the battery tech - it just doesn't match up to the modern innovations we're seeing elsewhere, especially considering the premium price tag. For a company like Sony, I expected nothing but cutting-edge. This review has really highlighted some areas where they need to up their game. Much appreciated for shedding light on these aspects - it's crucial info for anyone thinking about where to invest their hard-earned cash in the camera market!
I was looking for alternatives for the R50 and I ended up more convinced to go for it, lol. For family traveling purposes, where I'll be mixing family photos, architecture and landscape, do you still believe the 16mm F2.8 RF is the best option or would you get one with a flexible focal range, like the kit one ( RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3) but then, giving up on the low light good results, or even the RF-S 10-18mm?
@@FulaanCreative , thanks for sharing your well valued opinion Fulaan. Indeed a 50mm would give gorgeous family portraits, besides the bokeh effect that stands out in various situations.
great video. My Canon G16 is due for a replacement after more than a decade and more than a 100,000 photos and your simple, straight-forward and practical explanation made my decision both easier and a bit more complicated given the features available. thanks so much
Instead of the R50 I bought a used M50. It’s cheap and they made some awesome lenses for it including a very sharp 22mm f2 pancake lens. And you can adapt EF lenses to it - although it gets a little bigger then. With the pancake its small, though barely pocketable.
Came for a review, stayed for the quality, accent and steeze. Kindly recommend the best mid range camera for beginner content creator (fashion and travel) who would like to get great photos and short videos. Thank you!
The Sony A7c II should be equal #1, because it’s volume is smaller than the R50 but it’s FULL FRAME with a whopping 33MP sensor. This allows heavy cropping that effectively increases the focal length of your lens. Using APS-C mode you’ll still get a 14MP image. Its disadvantage is it’s heavier because of its metal body, but that means it’s more robust.
I already have a full frame camera, a7iv, buy a pocket camera would be nice for those moments when I can't get the big camera out of my backpack in time. Rx100 Vii isn't cheap. But I don't dare to have the full frame camera mounted to my backpack strap. Nor a chest harness. I saw the Rx100iii used but still not super cheap but less than half of the price. Cheapest camera I found were super small pocket cameras. Saw some Samsung some Nikon some I don't even know what is.
good video bro keep going, hopefully ur channel grows man!!!! also just getting into photography its pretty cool, dont know what camera i should invest in, thats not too much.
I am looking for a lightweight and compact camera to use on high altitude expeditions in the Himalayas. and I am expecting to get good quality photos and videos of other mountains from the top of the summit. Canon M 50 mirrorless, Fujifilm x100v, Canon R50 or Sony RX100 . which would be a great? I'll be very grateful if you guide me. Thank you.
i have the GR3, which is the best camera on this list btw, and i still dont bring it with me as often as id like, im not sure how smaller and lighter they would have to make it for me to keep carrying it lmao
Ok you were right …choosing a light weight interchangeable lens camera in a compact camera segment is controversial! That said, your video. Thought your choices up to then were fair..I do have the 100vii and often use it. If I was to select an interchangeable lens camera (has to be light and small) I think there are many others choices (and perhaps better). A small lens and an OM5 might be near the top, Nikon Zfc (or Z30) and maybe the ZvE 10. That might be another interesting video…like this one!
Sony ZV-E10 is as well good combat camera. Not pocketable with lens, but the body is. Keep the lens in hand and body in pocket. Good for video and photo.
thank you for this excellent vid. I have one question... I don't own the RF 28 mm prime lens... but could it be more pancake-like than the 16 mm? and if one wants to buy into a discontinued system, there are the tiny M cameras and the EF-M 22 mm pancake.
Thanks. I'd suggest playing around with a friends dedicated camera and see if it does anything you like that your phone doesn't do. Phone cameras are great these days but they aren't quite up there with many of these cameras. Especially the ones with larger sensors.
Ummm, not to bash you or try to hate, but the longest zoom on a point-and-shoot, as far as I know, is on Sony HX90/HX99 cameras. It goes from 24mm to 720mm. The aperture is not amazing f3.5-f6.4 but it has amazing zoom.
@chrisidoestech The Hx90/HX99 has an impressive zoom, at 30x and it’s toyish size fully places it into the compact point and shoot category but it doesn’t beat the 40x zoom of the Cannon SX-720H. It has the full frame equivalent 24mm-960mm. I had the HX99 and while it has a good zoom the images are not great. They loose contrast and sharpness rather quickly after zooming in. The sensor on this camera is 0.5in, so you can’t expect fantastic low light (i.e indoor gymnasium or concert halls), or much dynamic range performance, (i.e skys blown out and shadows preserved). The aperture is f3.5-6.4, so it is best suited for perfect lighting shooting, (sunny days) when looking to use the zoom, or using it’s popup built in flash when indoor and want to take normal range shots. You can shoot raw with it, which leaves some room for working with images in post which is good. Also, when shooting video the rolling shutter was unreal, (bad). It can do 4k but only 5min clips which isn’t great but it does have really good hand held stabilization, which gives remarkably steady footage when walking and recording. You get the pop up EVF, the pop up flash, and the screen tilts up, but none of the buttons give a satisfying click and they feel like they will break if used for any amount of time. I returned it, as I still payed $400 for it and it came with a lot of limitations. The one to get if looking for a good Zoom, ( and you’re looking to spend the money) is the Sony RX10 M4. That sucker has a 25x zoom, f2.4-4 aperture , & 1in sensor. It is $1700, and no ways pocketable but leagues better in the picture quality department.
I loved your video and breakdown of the camera's. Alot of them were pretty good just not me. I just want a camera that takes clear crisp concise pictures add the ability for a video that will have access to a microphone and maybe with some extra bells and whistles. I am not into vlogging or content but I would like the ability to post to maybe Twitter or definitely Facebook. I was kind of bummed out you didn't mention the Canon Rebel T7 or even the Canon G7. 😢😢😢 If you give me a tip on a great camera that would be awesome!!!
Thanks. For what you are trying to do your smartphone may be sufficient. The cameras you mentioned are a bit older now, personally I'd pay a little extra and go for an R50 over older offerings from Canon.
What best compact camera for good instagrammable photos can you recommend ? I don’t really have a great knowledge about cameras, looking for help here, thankksss. I’m planning to Buy canon g7x mark3 but idk if its worth it
Ricoh has the best quality pictures if you like editing, the canon is the most user-friendly, maybe also the Sony RX series. All are good option, but Ricoh has a bigger sensor which helps a lot in low light situation and also the best IBIS, but its fixed lens 28 or 40mm, the 40 is nice for portraits and lifestyle and the 28mm is good all-around including travel and landscape.
After watching your videos I decided to biy the R50 and wow that was a good and nice surprise of quality pictures, color IA en excelent options in A+ modo like tint, temp, luminance etc etc I just have to compose my picture and let the camera do the magic in A+, thanks bro
I have both the Sony RX100VII and the Canon G5XII. Because of it's better lowlight abilities, I prefer the G5XII. Unfortunately, Canon shot themselves in the foot and no longer manufactures this lil gem😕😕
hey Fulaan great video! I'm looking for a camera for my content creation plans. I'm also into filmmaking and like to try and learn Log shooting and color grading. I took a look at the Fujifilm XS20 but I'm not sure about its AF. I know it's better but I was wondering if you had a chance to test or would you recommend any other camera in that price range
All these cameras are better than smartphone cameras in some ways. It really depends what you are specifically looking for out of a camera

ok, let's say i want a camera that can take the same pictures as an s24. that combined with a 200$ smartphone, costs bellow 400?@@FulaanCreative also. that it fits in a pocket ps. actually. do a s23 so there's not a huge gap in price. s23 costs 500.
I would imagine the newer iphones would have a better image but the selling point of this camera isn't the image quality but more it's ruggedness or so it seems
@@FulaanCreative yes, i am talking only about the image/video quality. i got the TG5 just because of snow and moisture environment with no intention of the using the phone. however after a trip, the 4K video and photo on the TG5 made me use it as a back up/night flash shooting instead. I wish these compact can improve on image and video quality, at least on par with the smart phones nowadays. sadly i am not seeing that on TG6 and 7.

The Ricoh's, the Fujifilm X100 and Sony RX100 have built in flash. (Edit: All on the list have)
I bought my wife the Canon G5Xii.
Thanks for chiming in : )
You are straight to point, love that.
Great choices. There were many more not that long ago. Many great point and shoots that were available just a few short years ago quietly disappeared.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video! Right to the point info without unnecessary BS
What is the best P&S camera for concert photography (low-light)? Thanks.
It does have some weaknesses for sure but a decent camera for certain use cases.
It seems the g5 is hard to find unfortunately, and for me it's never really about the weight, it's always compactness
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I agree it is most definitely a beast for photography.
Allow me to praise the mix of this.
Thanks!
Yes it's a shame about EF-M Cameras cause it was a nice compact line up. Thanks for sharing.
Whats with the audio panning from center to left ? good video though
Not sure what happened there. Thanks for pointing that out though.
The Panasonic Lumix ZS60 is a bit older but has a 24-720mm equivalent lens in the same size body as the ZS200D. I have it, and it takes great photos with good light. I have all black but there's a version with silver at the top, which gives that touch of vintage look.
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
What do you think about the Canon SX740?
I don't know much about it but it looks like an awesome little camera
Great video, but your audio is different between b rolls and the self shots, if you didn't notice!
Great video and great channel!
I appreciate that!
Thanks! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
That Canon G5X looks interesting, do you have a purchase link?
Yes. Just added it. Thanks!
All good stuff; but the Canon R50 is not a compact camera now, is it?!
Best compact point and shoot camera if you want to just take pictures is the RX100 V/VA. No doubt.
Do you know a camera similar to the R50 that is protected / sealed from weather.
I'd like to continue my recordings even if it rains or is there any hacks for it?
Thanks for your videos, you explain well for beginners like myself.
There are special plastic bags you could buy made for cameras that will be used underwater or in the rain. They are pretty cheap on amazon.
Im brand new to this world n this to the point detailed video is perfect. Thanks bro!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for sharing
Love from BANGLADESH 🇧🇩
So you’re suggesting the Canon G5 X Mark II here but not the G7 Mark III?
Very similar cameras. G5XII has an EVF and it has 20mm extra on the longer end of the focal length whereas the G7XIII does not have those things but does have a mic input. I wouldn't go for the G7XIII unless I was going to do content creation and really needed the MIC port.
That’s a bummer. BH lists the G5 X Mark II as ‘No Longer Available’ as opposed to ‘Out of Stock/Back Ordered.’ Any other suggestions as far as vacation/friend/family/picture-snapping cameras??
@@cklockwork The Sony RX100 III is also a great choice
The number one slot still needs to be a compact camera. We know you can get larger cams to do the job. The RX100 is the number one slot where an all-round minimal compromise solution is there. Cheers
If you want strict compactness then I'd agree the rx100 vii is the way to go
Canon R50 FTW!❤
What camera would you suggest for someone who only wants to record and take pictures of books?
Interesting use case. I thing the R50 would be great for that.
I'm with you on that. Personally I'd rather have a slightly larger aps-c camera over a compact point and shoot
Yes, also for underwater
Thank you so much for this!!
@3:00 Canon PowerShot SX740 HS has 40x optical zoom.
If you go for the kit lens I'd grab a 50mm rf f1.8 as well considering how cheap it is. The 10-18 is nice but the aperture is a bit lacking a bit.
@@FulaanCreative , thanks for sharing your well valued opinion Fulaan. Indeed a 50mm would give gorgeous family portraits, besides the bokeh effect that stands out in various situations.
great video. My Canon G16 is due for a replacement after more than a decade and more than a 100,000 photos and your simple, straight-forward and practical explanation made my decision both easier and a bit more complicated given the features available. thanks so much
Coming from Canon G10 & G1x user here. I will recommend Canon G5X.
@@katabrian6985 thanks for the reco. hoping it doesn't have availability issues as I haven't seen it in stores for the past few months
Thanks! Glad it was helpful.
Instead of the R50 I bought a used M50. It’s cheap and they made some awesome lenses for it including a very sharp 22mm f2 pancake lens. And you can adapt EF lenses to it - although it gets a little bigger then. With the pancake its small, though barely pocketable.
I started this channel with the m50 and the 22mm pancake. Lovely memories with that camera and lens : )
But m50 doesn't have autofocus tracking for video 😅
Is it really that compact? If so that is pretty impressive although it is a much pricier than the r50.

This video is so helpful thank you
You are very welcome
For the concert photography canon g7x mark ii or sony rx100 iii?
I already have a full frame camera, a7iv, buy a pocket camera would be nice for those moments when I can't get the big camera out of my backpack in time. Rx100 Vii isn't cheap. But I don't dare to have the full frame camera mounted to my backpack strap. Nor a chest harness. I saw the Rx100iii used but still not super cheap but less than half of the price. Cheapest camera I found were super small pocket cameras. Saw some Samsung some Nikon some I don't even know what is.
Ótimo vídeo, me ajudou bastante
Thanks!
good video bro keep going, hopefully ur channel grows man!!!! also just getting into photography its pretty cool, dont know what camera i should invest in, thats not too much.
Thanks! The R50 is a good candidate in my opinion
Thank you.
All are great but the Rx100 is the most compact and convenient one for sure.
i have the GR3, which is the best camera on this list btw, and i still dont bring it with me as often as id like, im not sure how smaller and lighter they would have to make it for me to keep carrying it lmao
Fulaan what are you thoughts on the Nikon Z30?
I like it. I've heard it can overheat in hot weather when shooting in 4k but other than that it's good.
Interesting comparisons. But please include metric dimensions.
I just want to take pictures of the sunset and the moon! Which one should I get?
Any camera on here could probably do well at that. Personally for me it would be either the r50 or the rx100 VII
Thanks, good review. It seems Canon pulled the G5X II off the market. Any idea where I still might be able to buy one?
Hmm..not sure but you might want to look for the G7x II it's pretty similar other than a few small differences.
Great video… very interesting and informative 🙏💜
First time seeing you. I love your style of presentation and exceptional video editing.
Thanks! I appreciate that.
Canon M6 MII ? 🧐
Thanks! Please rephrase the question. I didn't quite understand
LOTS of great info here--thanks!!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video
I wonder if there is any point of buying a camera if you already have a compact camera in your phone
Interesting. I'm not familiar with that camera.
Great video and i love your accent.
Thanks : )
I think x100f should be in this list too. Much smaller than x100v and has great image quality, and can get a used one under 900 dollars.
Interesting. I'll have to look into it.
One question, why are you talking about the CANON G5 mark II and not the Canon g7 mark III?
Pretty similar cameras, one is a little better for video and the other is a little better for stills. I didn't want to mention both.
@@FulaanCreative ❤
Compare these compact cameras with high-end mobile phones, which one will have better image quality?
Generally speaking cameras with larger sensors will have better image quality so for the most part I would say these will be better.
After watching your videos I decided to biy the R50 and wow that was a good and nice surprise of quality pictures, color IA en excelent options in A+ modo like tint, temp, luminance etc etc I just have to compose my picture and let the camera do the magic in A+, thanks bro
Awesome! Glad I could help.
Great vid; thank you!!
My pleasure!
Thank you for a very clear explanation of these categories!
You're very welcome!
I have both the Sony RX100VII and the Canon G5XII. Because of it's better lowlight abilities, I prefer the G5XII. Unfortunately, Canon shot themselves in the foot and no longer manufactures this lil gem😕😕
For real right
Just came across you buddy- really like your reviews. Thank you for your reviews
You are very welcome : )
Good analysis.
Thanks!
keep up the great work
Thanks man!
Very well presented and explained!
Thanks!
What do you recomend to poor pockets? (under 300€)
I think you can find many of these cameras used around that price. I'd look for a used one that's in good shape
Awesome video! Super informative, thank you!

Great Video!

hey Fulaan great video!
Hello. I really like the Lumix S5II
what if you only want a camara that can commpete with the latest samsung / iphone / google / op phone?
All these cameras are better than smartphone cameras in some ways. It really depends what you are specifically looking for out of a camera
ok, let's say i want a camera that can take the same pictures as an s24. that combined with a 200$ smartphone, costs bellow 400?@@FulaanCreative
also. that it fits in a pocket
ps. actually. do a s23 so there's not a huge gap in price. s23 costs 500.
Had the Olympus TG5 and iPhone 11 Pro. iPhone is the winner for 4K video and photo.
