I am sure it's sexist because the queen is evil, and snow white in the end goes with the prince. Edit:People, please use your brains. It's a hyperbole response meant to indicate what the eternaly offended would say to explain why the original animated movie is bad.
yeah, and even if you look closely it is even "worse" for these people. Snow White is beloved by 7 dwarves, who adore, and protect her. The Huntsman send to kill her also fells in love with her and does not do it. I guess we will have a role reversal like in that horrible Little Mermaid movie, where it was the mermaid, not the prince, who steered the ship into Ursula, so here Snow White would problaby kiss prince in the end xD
Idk why they need to "empower" anyone, anyway. Just make a good story. If someone feels empowered as a byproduct then that's just a bonus. We can all identify with certain tropes regardless of the character's age, race, gender etc.
In the original, the Evil Queen was in a position of power. And she was preoccupied with being fairest. Seems like the story was a warning against power and narcissism. 😂😂😂
true, they completely missed the point. Snow white is supposed to be humble and sweet (and also young and naive), if they are going to give her same characteristics as an evil queen then that would make her dislikable too
So the new version changes "fairest" from being a beauty standard to being about justice and tolerance and all that crap. If the EVIL Queen can ask the Magic Mirror "Who is the fairest and most just of them all?" and it's answer is "only Snow White", how horrific must that kingdom be to live in if the entire population is worse than the EVIL Queen?!? Someone without a brain wrote that little change into the story.
IKR i always kinda thought the moral of the story was while some people could seem on the outside to be the "fairest of them all" but on the inside be ugly and horrible like the queen and to truly to the "fairest of them all" you had to have outside and inside beauty to do so and thats what i thought was one of the major takeaways from that story was. I also never thought the prince was really winning the girl because he was somehow better then snow white more that a good caring husbend was her reward for not becoming jaded or evil but staying true to being a kind hearted good person.
It is a bizarre timeline. You see the actor playing the main character in the upcoming One Piece live action barely holding back tears when Oda said "you are one of the only actors I could picture as Luffy" and at same time this actress shows blatant disregard over the source material.
@@D3xt3r33 "anime sucks" the profits state otherwise. One Piece has made more money worldwide than all of Marvel comics combined. More than Batman in DC. Superman has only made equal. Why do think back in the 90s Disney purchased Ghibli? (aka Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke etc)
If you don't think the original story is good make your own with your own setting, your own characters and your own message. But they are talentless so they can't.

Snow White, like all folk/fairytales, was about learning life lessons. In this case there were multiple lessons, among them being: 1. Wariness around new things is healthy. (The dwarves were always wary around everyone, which saved Snow White multiple times) 2. Always be polite, accepting and respectful, regardless of external differences. (This is why Snow White and the dwarves got along quickly) 3. Too much trust in strangers is dangerous, though. (the Queen actually tried to kill Snow White three times: Once with a corset, once with a poisoned comb, lastly with the apple) 4. And obsessive envy over what others have will only harm you in the long run. (The Queen was miserable and unhappy whenever she was not the fairest, and died a horrible death) The main issue with the remakes nowadays is that these people don't even consider the original lessons of the story and just want to force their own ideals into a thing that they think will help them sell it. It doesn't matter what the intent is, it always falls flat if they refuse to see and preserve what the original meant. They change the narrative, the lessons are lost. Cinderella took risks to get away from her own situation, but could only do that while anonymous and with outside help because as a victim of abuse/neglect, she found it impossible to escape without the aid of others and protection from backlash. You can easily alter the abuse or what she runs away to. She doesn't need a prince, just safety. Beauty and the Beast is about a strong, independent, forward thinking woman getting out of her comfort zone and finding out about things she didn't know she'd enjoy, and a man who was once selfish learning about empathy toward those around him, regardless of social standing. You can alter the main characters to be of any race or gender, so long as the 'beauty' is what the 'beast' would have once seen as lesser. The Little Mermaid is about an innocent child dreaming about things beyond their reach, enduring great pains to become an adult and finding it not what she expected, followed by rough choices. Disney's old version already altered the ending to where she doesn't need to choose between murder or death and can fight the sea witch for her happily ever after, but they kept in that she needed to sacrifice her past to earn her future. Mulan was a woman defying all social norms to do what she hoped would protect her loved ones. She only found purpose when expectations were different. And after her deception was revealed she still did what she could to protect those she cared about even if they'd reject her for being who she was. Whatever happens, this story needs a protagonist who reluctantly obeys social norms until they can pretend to be someone else to defy the norms for selfless reasons. And still does the right thing even when rejected because of their deception. Aladdin was about a gullible boy being tricked and chancing upon practically unlimited power, then abusing that power and being tricked again into losing it before he learns to be a more responsible and honest adult. Disney really altered the original story a LOT but it kept the main lesson: be responsible and honest. That's why it worked so well. (Robin Williams' role in things cannot be ignored though) All of these stories have lessons in them: You can rely on others for what you cannot manage alone, you shouldn't judge on appearances, always be polite, honest and respectful, be careful what you wish for, be wary of strangers, be true to yourself and not what others expect of you, don't be selfish, don't be rude. None of those lessons need to be removed from any story to 'update' them for modern audiences. They are STILL relevant lessons.
It makes sense the way it should if you replace "modern audience" with "selfish, apathetic, degenerate, wicked audience". Which, at the end of the day, is how the propaganda has been trying to push the West for awhile now. Hollywood being a part of that dogma.
Can I just say that this is a much better take than the video essay's take was? The video essay was basically one long appeal to tradition, where any deviation from tradition is therefore inferior. I would agree that Disney's "remakes" are all inferior to the original productions, but not because they have a political aspect to them. It's because the writing, characterization, and internal logic are inconsistent. They basically missed the nuances of the original stories. Your comment shows what elements could be kept to keep the spirit of the original but update settings or characters. Appreciate that you took the time and effort to share your take.
For those who understand the intended symbolism from the earliest telling of the Snow White, this is doubly hilarious because Disney has become the wicked Queen themselves going after the unaware, pure beauty of their better animated stories of generations past. A bit of an inversion but it plays the same.
According to her, women can't be in love anymore and they have to lead a country to be worth anything. The more I hear about this movie, the more I think I'm in a nightmare. It's also possible to do both. In 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman (which wasn't very good but still) Snow White is a badass warrior AND she gets to be saved by the prince.
I watched it when I was 11 and found it very fun. Fighting scenes were engaging enough for me and the dwarves were funny. Thanks for reminding me, I should watch it again
It's always funny how Hollywood troglodytes blame sexism and the patriarchy whenever the public doesn't like their feminists remakes. No, movies like Kill Bill or the Hunger Games did amazing in the box office. Why? Because they didn't try to push "Stong female don't need no man, men are bad" as the selling point of the movie.
Did you like the Peter JAckson LotR trilogy? What about the Ralp Bacchio cartoon? Because those are both adaptions too. All the good disney movies are adaptions of fairy tales and myths.
@@corrupt1user Thanks. Haven't seen them in a while and couldn't remember his name totally. And my point isn't that I like the new remakes. I hate them. Just pointing out we have a lot of great adaptions too.
@@kyleellis1825 Peter Jackson didn't seek to change the LOTR because he needed to push a message. He cast people because they fit the roles, not because it would make a statement. The stories were altered only to better fit cinema, and give presense to characters like Arwen, because they were important people and motivations to main characters, not to change the story or it's characters but to emphasize them. The costume and props were desiged with love and care and to make them believable, not stick out as some modernized vision meant to subvert. Also, name me one cast member of the LOTR who openly despised the source material, for what it was, or because of the time period it was from (aka 1950's). Even then, it was not perfect. Gimli is seen a bit too much of a comedic relief, while Legolas'es stunts are seen as dumb action inserts, but they are not big enough slights to hurt the story, themes or the whole. And you also forget, that those were adaptations from book to cinema, these are from cinema to cinema. What possible reason is there to make such alterations to the fundamentals of the story? And let's not forget either, that his Hobbit trilogy was not nearly as well received, and some of the actors did not care for the new direction for "everything is green screen", and peope did not care for the over the top comedic slapstic nonsense and just how all over the place the tone was, and how little substance the story had, after it was changed. And just like the Snow white, the changes were not done because it would make better cinema or a more impactful story (aka creativity), it was done out of ulterior motives (aka corruption), and thus made it worse, and down right bad.
And snow white is like many old disney princesses a good nice loving caring women. She gives us the example of compassion, responding to hate by love. After all she went through, she is still a loving women with so much compassion and faith and hope. This is true strength, compared to this arrogant behaviour we want to teach girls nowadays
Snow White wasn't just an animated movie. It was the First animated movie. The process they went into to make this movie is beyond amazing. Every frame hand painted. I'm curious if she even knows anything about the history of how this movie was made, or is it really just "It's like so old and stuff"
I bet she enjoyed it as a kid but she grew up with the internet and twitter. She is young and naive there is still hope for her, since a repeat of cleopatra or the witcher could happen
It's not just the first animated movie comprised of hand-painted frames, it's the media which made the Disney empire something for people like these sociopathic justus warriors to destroy.
Exactly, culturally its a pretty big deal that movie, it has an interesting history behind the curtains. Even if someone doesn't like the values reflected, it still has a historic/cultural value
it was re-repeased in theaters every other decade and made bank. it wasnt just groundbreaking when it came out, it was loved throughout the age. this is an everlasting movie, unlike the remakes.
2:10 “She’s not gonna be saved by a Prince or dreaming about love. She’s gonna be dreaming about becoming the leader she can be by being fearless, brave, and true.” Lol…
She doesn’t even know the story bro 😂 the person in power was a queen who was stalking her with a damn mirror not the prince 😂 seems like a woman in power to me and snow eventually rises up and gets to a position of power so she’s absolutely an idiot she’s punching the air as we speak instead of kick starting her career she ended her own shit is crazy 😂
..."bc her father told her that".... they can't help themselves. they immediately undercut their own points. SO, it;s ok for her to be doing that bc her father told her so, but it's not ok to be interested in a price, bc ''male oppression"...??? these girls are so dumb, that rocks are laughing at them right now.
Snow white is terrific because of the fundamental kindness of the film. It radiates genuine good heartedness in a visceral way that is profoundly moving. That's so much rarer and more precious than what they are trying to change it into.
In the original film, Snow White is an orphaned princess living with her abusive, cold-hearted and extremely jealous stepmother (who is also the Queen). Because the Queen is jealous that Snow White's beauty will be greater than her own she forces her to work as a scullery-maid and one day when the Queen was no longer considered the "fairest one of all" by her magic mirror, she orders a Huntsman to murder her and cut out her heart (which he, obviously, refuses) and the ONE TIME Snow White is happy with her stepmother is when a prince visits and sings with her and she falls in love. She yearns for love and she finds it. Why is this SO wrong, according to Rachel Zegler?
Well, that would require writers who are good (which Disney won't hire because they hire based on skin color instead of ability), as well as the studio to not have quintupled down on pushing stupid narratives that people are sick of.
No you don't. If they have the perfect original stories and they mess them up so much in the remakes imagine what they would do if they had to do everything from the beginning. They should just stop with the woke BS.
What's funny is the prince is hardly in the movie due to the fact that they had only just invented rotoscoping and couldn't do him very well. So, they weened him out because he didn't look too good and Snow White herself was realistic and well animated, the movie focused almost exclusively on her and her adventure and in the end, it was Snow White and the prince's love for each other that ended up saving her, not some weird toxic masculinity thing that the prince did. The prince didn't expect to revive her at all, he thought she was dead and was grieving over her. Seems obvious to me that she doesn't remember the movie from the one time she has watched it.
That also explain why there are not a lot of development of their romance. Something that this movie could fix, but they prefer to remove romance instead. I wonder if all "strong females" are mediocrely sucessefull cat ladies that end alone and bitter in old age. Remember when Sarah Connor became ripped for the sake of her son? Or when Katara and Toph fought bravely along their friends and crushes? Its like a phrase in Avatar and a wonder woman movie: "I may be an warrior but i am also a woman". Why erase such fundamental aspects?
@@JP-eo8zw Exactly! People love good female characters... as long as they are well written. And love is a natural motivation that most people have (even if it takes a different form than romance). It's relatable to humanity in general and it's a driving force/core characteristic for these characters. idk, I guess those types just want a very particular kind of woman, one who doesn't love and doesn't care and also just inexplicably makes man their enemy and doesn't want him anywhere near them... I can't imagine that aging well.
@@JP-eo8zw No, the whole point of a fairy tail is the magic. It's like asking that a movie depicting hansel and gretel go deeply into the logistics of having a house made out of candy. It takes the magic out of the fairy tail. They saw each other, fell in love at first sight. That's where it should end. They don't need to go on a date and see how well they are for eachother by doing goofy things or talking about their feelings.
@@JP-eo8zw This is the core issue I find with a lot of these. You know how you know a character is good? Remove whatever tag and see if the story still holds up just fine anyway. Ripley could have easily been a male and it would not have changed the impact of her story. You can say the same for sexuality, race, whatever. Even something like Mulan could still work if the reason she can't join is just something else, too weak, not the right caste, etc, the character arc still works. And the thing is power level isn't even the issue. John Wick is an absolute monster and that never really changes, the issue with the strong women characters is they then try to paint them as people trying to talk down on them or disparage them despite what should be a rather scary track record. If they really are that strong other characters should take note and respect them / take them very seriously for that. No one is going to underestimate John Wick the second they realize it's him. That's what these hollow shells lack and why they are so hated. They don't have a character arc, they are barely anything more than a cardboard cutout that doesn't change and we are suppose to like. The hero should struggle or what can we see in them
This is the first film I saw in theaters. I saw it with my mom very young at a nickle teatre. This was in the early nineties. The most warm memories i have of my mother and father are tied to those super special moments where you and your parents experience some emotional response to a story, where you can love the morals and characters and have meaningful family discussions.
Original snow white was already the boss. She puts them all in line, improves everyone's day, fixes their dirty house, makes killer dinner. she has them all around her finger. also isn't it the animals and dwarfs that off the queen? the prince just swoops in at the last 2 min of the movie and yoinks a kiss.
Yeah, they should've just remade the dumb prince part and left everything else intact. "See a girl sleeping and assault her, how romantic" - now that's truly dated.
It's also a lie to act like a Snow White who doesn't get saved is some novel thing. There were two big screen adaptations in 2012 that took that storyline. There's been endless Cinderella's, Sleeping Beauties, and Snow Whites in the last 20+ years that had that storyline. These adaptations were supposed to give us the original Disney version with the music, story, iconic designs all with the big budget of their live action department. That's all they were meant to do but someone had to put an agenda behind it.
The original story of Snow White is taken from a 19th-century German fairy tale or folk tale, written by the Brothers Grimm. The German brothers known for their various folk tales and stories, published 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' in 1812, which features the tale of Snow White as story number 53
@@dianaruman8723 You would be correct. The Brothers Grimm weren't simply authors, they were researchers and scientists. The fathers of modern linguistics, to be specific. They archived fairy tales, folk tales and fables, primarily as a foundation for linguistic research. That's their main achievement.
Even that’s not the original. In most cultures in Europe were different versions of Snow White, some didn’t have the seven dwarfs. The Grimm version can be considered the canon one, since it’s the only reliably written down. As a german who grew up with those fairy tails the Disney cartoon already felt like an abomination tbh. It was basically the same as what they do now, use old source material for, what they think is, the current mainstream and what’s gonna make them money. I always looked at Disney that way since I’ve been a kid. Total commercialization. I liked the Mickey Mouse comics tho, they were made with own creativity and everything else was basically the Mickey Mouse version of whatever source they found.
I‘m not even a huge fan of the original Snow White. But the scene alone where the dwarves rush alongside the animals to stop the Queen in disguise, where Grumpy, the biggest asshole of them, is the first into the fray and the one who cries the most when they are too late… I don‘t know, it just sticked with me. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. Movies with heart can evoke such a response.
This is a good take here, every dwarf had their own issues but at the end of the day, cared about Snow White and would do their best to protect her. Its a fantasy, without any politics in it. You don't see any propaganda in this movie, even though it was made back in the 30's, cause people watched movies for FUN and FANTASY, not actors hot take on current politics or real life events.

I mean if we want to be honest snow white doesn't actually show true love does it? In a fantasy world sure but it's not exactly portraying actual true love and not everyone wants to be rescued. I'm playing devil's advocate because ultimately I'm not gonna watch this. No nees to fix what's not broken
The same day as the one when they decided to change a song that was meant to hint at a love shared between 2 human beings... cause that ending kiss was not consensual (kiss the girl from the little mermaid)
"Snow White" is named for skin as white as snow. So, if there's no Snow White and there are no dwarves, WTF are we left with? Non-white Bitter Heroine and her DEI Sidekicks? Cootchie and The Blowfish? Fool and The Gang?
To be honest the most beautiful woman being the most white seems to imply that whiteness is superior, that would not fly today. I think Disney is doing this because they don't want to lose copyright or some shit. Snow white is too fucked up to do a remake.
Snow white has some phenomenal hand drawn animation that basically gave Disney it's start. It's a damn iconic picture and I hate that they keep watering down these amazing animated pictures that still look good today with these live action remake money grabs. Even when they did alright on the remakes, I never needed or wanted them, and it would always be better to just watch the original again.
Exactly what I believe, art in motion... Parasitic people from a green screen who wouldn't know one end of a paint brush to the other. Empty souls, I'm here looking at da vincis mona.. and Lisa's smile
It's like phenomenal in the same sense that Gertie the Dinosaur is though. I can't imagine anyone who isn't a traditional animator or hardcore animation buff watching Snow White today, and even then pretty much exclusively for the dwarves, animals, and disguised queen bits. Snow White and the Prince are just rotoscoped film footage and their lines and delivery are weird and uninteresting. It doesn't really stack up favorably to Bambi, Jungle Book, Robin Hood, Dalmations, or the renaissance movies.
Excuse me, maybe I’m an idiot but how does them releasing a live action remake “water down” the original? Are they removing access to the original animated movie? Also, they’re remaking these to keep the IP so they don’t wind up in the public domain. And aren’t all movies essentially money grabs? I mean even the most starving of starving artists still create to get paid for it
There's a reason the Hero's Journey is the most popular story telling structure. People like seeing a person grow to overcome adversity. If there are no faults in a character, there can be no growth, so its boring and unbelievable.
Yes, I see it, now... Harry Potter is born perfect. Voldemort dies. The end. That would have saved some paper. Could have just written it on the head of a pin, instead. Nope. Instead, you get about 1,000 pages of novel and 14 hours of film.

There's a certain irony in not realizing that Snow White was already an ideal woman that didn't need to be changed, and that it was the prince who had to prove himself with true love's kiss. Meaning, he had to be pure and truly love her rather than see her as an object in order for her to be cured of her endless sleep.

@@silentkhaos1176 And the sad part is that a "Snow Brown" story could be cool, if it was an original one. I'd watch a whole movie where Chel from El Dorado, who is a badass independent woman written right, is the main character.
@@RmnGnzlz Hell yes, people would be all over a retelling of El Dorado from Chel's perspective. Especially if you pushed the coy, shrewd, femme fatale angle. Just from a narrative perspective there is a chance it actually ends up better than the original as the movie is kind of flat during the spain/boat ride and only really picks up once Miguel and Tulio actually make it to the waterfall and meet chel... That same time spent focused on Chel's backstory and her plan to steal the idol (i'd imagine to escape a shitty situation) could flow much better and have a sharper ramp up to the action/entertaining parts of the film. I'd definitely be interested in it... but Snow tan and the 7 minorities (that look like they are coming back from a woodstock concert) just doesn't cut it.
Fun Fact: The 1937 animated Snow White was actually the first feature length animated movie to have been made and released into theaters. It was believed that making a animated movie for that time was not really feasible much less profitable. Walt Disney had to personally put everything on the line and hope it would turn a profit and his employees worked almost everyday to make this movie. (You can learn alot from Defunctland: The Craziest Party Walt ever threw as well as Micky Mouse Park) So even if you don't care for Snow White it is an actual revolution and was historically significant for animation and ironically came from Disney and who would never take such a huge risk like it ever.
Defunctland's documentaries about the goings on at the Walt Disney studios are all fantastic, his two-hour seminal work on queuing is spectacular, but "Live from the Space Stage" is easily the most incredible thing on UA-cam.
If I remember correctly both Walt and his brother pulled a Cuphead, basically threw all their money into making Snow White. Their homes, their social security etc etc etc. Snow White is basically the master pillar that made possible the rise of Disney as it is today.
And fun fact: snow white goes back to the fairytales of the Grimm brothers.. (german) .. its so disrepectful to treat this kind of european culture.. if anyone did the same to the story of Mulan.. it would be called "cultural appropriation"... also its so dumb and brainless to put the image of women from 2023 into a movie which plays in the midage..
1917 El Apòstol (1h10m) - from Quirino Cristiani (Argentina) 1926 Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1h05m) - from Lotte Reiniger (Germany) Snow White is not the first full lenght movie theater to be produced nor get success and recognition. As for the most influencial one I would consider "Le rois et l'oiseau" from Paul Grimault & Jacques Prévert who still stand to be a major inspiration for animators (but this is only my biased opinion)
11:16 The funniest part about this is that they inevitably end up writing villains instead of heroes, with no self-awareness that they've done so. It also ends making the actual villain look heroic. Like basically everything about Carol Danvers' character since she became Captain Marvel is that of of villain. Same thing with Ironheart.
The interviews definitely didn't help the Cpt Marvel's reception. That said, I thought the Captain Marvel movie was just poorly written and heavily relied on "Look! It's the 90's" references.
Robyn Hood is the most recent good example of this. The entire series, you're rooting for the "antagonists" because they are legit the good guys in the context of the story.
It’s been 83 years since Disney’s original Snow White released for the world to view. And it’s still remembered. By the eventual 100th year anniversary of the 1937 original, people will have still remembered it. The newer, live action Snow White, will be forgotten in five years at best, or forgotten in a year at worst.
And the future, because of natural progression, torches the past. Erodes the norm. Call it what you want, what you said isn't as deep as you think it is 😂
They replaced the dwarves with "magical creatures", as if they are centaur or something. The shame is that now little people actors are being replaced by other actors.
I hate hearing about how the new movie "isn't a love story", when the old one isn't either. It starts with Snow dreaming of an unrealistic love, but she gets reality checked when the queen chases her out of town by attempting to kill her. She comes across a house of 7 male dwarve miners, immediately takes charge with her charisma and sense, makes their living situation hygienic by cleaning and making them wash their hands, enjoying life with them, and in general just being happy. But the queen can't let her be happy so makes herself ugly just to kill her (sleeping death, but w/e) and a prince who really wasn't part of the story comes to mourn the fallen Snow, kisses her goodbye, and ends up reviving her, for the happy ending of Snow not being dead. The original was literally a story with a perfect female protagonist, smart, beautiful, always right, but ACTUALLY WATCHABLE AND ENJOYABLE WITHOUT ALIENATING EVERYONE BY PUTTING DOWN ANYONE. It started with a song about unrealistic love, but taught priorities, and how to live happily wherever you are, and love will come along later. Hollywood, remove heads from anuses, please. The old story is exactly
this is what I also understood about the story of snow white. also the plot was about the pure good (snow white) and the pure evil (evil queen) and the results of each.
Let's not forget the Prince and her were engaged (medieval time and politics) he basically left his kingdom for a princess he had met and heard she passed away...I still don't see why the dude gets so much hatred
2:40 The two most important and powerful characters in the original story are both female. Also, the original story doesn't take away agency from the female characters. Snow White is a pure hearted and good person who improves the lives of those she comes into contact with whether they be animals, dwarves or the prince. The movie sends the message that you reap what you sow. If all you care about is power, greed and beauty, then people will not help you and this can lead to your own demise (the queen). But if you seek to help others the world will ultimately reward you (snow white). Perhaps 4th wave feminists take umbrage with the fairy tale trope of the prince awakening the princess with a kiss. And this is admittedly a little silly from a modern perspective but one should also remember that this is simply reinforcing the essential benefit to society of the traditional heterosexual coupling and how it contributes to the continuation of our civilization. In the modern world women have a much larger role in the workforce and as such snow white's skills can move beyond those of the domestic to the diplomatic and intellectual. However, just because elements of our oldest stories should be adjusted to reflect the times in which they inhabit does not mean that they should be redone altogether. Afterall, our ancestors might have been flawed but perhaps they had keener understanding of the human condition than we give them credit for.
Nicely put. As a kid, seeing the prince kissing Snow White didn't feel creepy, but I could see how people with a modern lens who have a bias or certain agenda would try to spin it into looking much worse then it did. You could of course just think it's weird for a wandering prince to just show up and kiss a supposed dead girl on the lips, but I always just had my own assumption that in this fantasy world there could be some sort of tradition or cultural custom that could require something like that. It wouldn't be hard at all to make slight changes to the original in good faith. You could alter the prince's first encounter with Snow White to make it feel less jarring (instead of having him just appear randomly hop the wall and jumpscare her), but still keep the spirit of the original scene. And if it was established that the kiss of a prince was traditional blessing or something the people at the time did for a deceased person (game of thrones has all sorts of things people would believe or do for gods/tradition), you could make something work. Or maybe have the prince take an active role, and maybe he did research or followed some clues earlier in the movie to let him believe that he could break a curse. There's many things they can change in good faith while not belittling the original work, it's a shame they keep falling into this pattern with remakes.
But you don't understand history has zero bearing on the world today (unless it's the evils of specifically western society). Everything is socially constructed, which means every aspect of society can then be deconstructed and broken down. If someone did look at the past for guidance they would see that every society that goes through a cultural break down like what the western world is currently going through a cataclysmic event follows.... every single time. We are not in a good spot as a society and it will get wayyyy worse before better.
Actually in the german Original Story By the grim Brothers there is no Kiss to Awake the Princess. The dwarves had put her in a Glass coffin to Look at her and the Prince came and took her With him. And on the way the carriers Stumbled and the Apple in her throat popped out and she lived. And Then they Maried. With the stepmother forced to dance in ironboots until she Died from fatuige. So no Kiss until Reanimation Sorry for the dumb englisch but i wanted to Share that
"It's really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful." How can a person even say this? Finding their significant other and finding true love is literally one of the most wonderful things a person can experience in their lives.
It's interesting - your explanation of the problem of the Strong Female Character archetype being good at everything and having no weaknesses is nearly word for word what Drinker has said about the issue. As a contrast, he points out characters like Ripley and Sarah Connor as strong characters with actual story arcs who happened to also be female.
It's like a character learning how to overcome their own flaws so they can stand strong in the face of conflict, is what makes a character intresting. It's a literal fundamental of story telling as old as time itself. Another major problem of these strong female character archetypes is they have very little to no personality, combine that with lack of flaws and they are just emotionless/boring characters in which the audience has no reason to care for.
I mean tbf i would find male characters who have no flaws and are perfect at everything just as boring, i think a good character in general has flaws that they need to overcome. That being said in modern times this has been a major issue with "strong female characters"
@@anon8544 your not the only one, that is one reason I can't stand the majority of isekai anime MC's. They are basically self insert characters designed purposely to be bland/uninteresting so the viewer could project themselves onto. (I don't hate self inserts characters entirely, I just don't think they work outside of video games or any media where the audience directly impacts the story). Self inserts just don't work in traditional linear storytelling, whether their male or female.
@@justsomehalofan4386 I think what makes most isekai protagonists especially obnoxious is the combination of being ludicrously overpowered and as bland and boring as cardboard. They tend to go out of their way to make the hero a generic japanese NEET/gamer/nerd, usually a shy social outcast and then in the fantasy world they get the most absurd set of powers, usually without having to work too hard to unlock these skills. I think these characters wouldn't be as universally despised if they were a bit less generic and/or had to work a bit harder to become so overpowered.
Established IP’s have established fanbases. Studios take advantage of the fanbases loyalty to said IP, using that as an opportunity to spread their own messages and influences. It is manipulative and tactful.
The problem with actors is that they basically became the Heroes of American culture. The issue is, they aren't heros, like public servant, soldiers and the like, they're actors. As a result they held this high and mighty position in society they really didn't deserve. It reminds me of a story about the Spartan King Agesilaus II when he was old. An Tragic actor named Callippides had traveled to Sparta and everyone fawned over him. But when he approached the King and acted like he was hot shit, saluting him as if he was a soldier, Agesilaus basically told him off and said "Are you not Callippides the Showmen?" Actors are actors, and unless your name is Christopher Lee, you only pretend to be a Hero
The 2015 Cinderella, with LIly James and Robb Stark was FIRE. I didn't even think of it as a "live action remake" - it was just another Cinderella movie. And they NAILED IT. It's the regular story plus a lot more depth and characterization - the good kind, not the shallow "modern audience" kind. Watch it on a date night, your girl will love it.
Your intuitions on the topic are right on point. Snow White 1937 was a retake on a classical German tale from the 1800s. Its a classical story about human envy and greed vs hope and fortitude. Yes these classical stories will live on for hundreds of years. Like the Jean De La Fontaine fables or Greek Mythology, etc. And for the very reasons you explained. That young girl is completely oblivious tho, sadly. And its Disney's fault letting her spread her obliviousness unchecked like that. She's really causing some serious damage to Disney's Brand right now whether she realises it or not.
The original was sort of interesting and had a somewhat cool message. The queen was evil. Snow White was not her own daughter. Snow White had a pure heart and she was naively thinking all others had such a heart as well. The evil and jealous queen wanted to get rid of Snow White, and she fell for it because she was naive. Apart from being a love story, it is also a cautionary story for innocent girls to be careful in this world, where schemers and bad people exist. Two faced snakes who plot against you for the dumbest reasons. But still to be a story for young girls, it does have a happy ending where the prince saves her and they live happily ever after.
Also the evil queen in her jealousy she lost her beauty, youth, power, weath, and everything in her pursuit. That a important lesson, how many time we see people lose everything because of their irrational hate and jealousy, just look at Amber Heard.
Women did field work, cooking, cleaning, clothesmaking, basketmaking and child rearing in the medieval period to name a few things. Women have ALWAYS done a whole lot, just different things. But, I understand he's referring to making big decicions.
"Lips red as the rose, hair black as ebony, skin white as snow." The original movie spells out pretty clearly how the protagonist looks. They might as well have cast the darkest girl possible if they want to push "THE MESSAGE".
They should cast a girl who is addicted to doing/selling coke but tries to pretty up to potential buyers by dying her hair black and painting her lips red. Would prolly be better than this new adaptation.
Agree 100% about the idea of a character having no flaws. No one is infallible. An infallible character feels flat and preachy whereas someone with flaws is relatable.
WWII started in 1938, but yeah, the movie was based off life as found in europe in general during the late 17th/early 18th, but before the french revolution. The story was a folk tale that was verbally passed down and originally came out of the eastern part of what whas known as Silesia under the Holy Roman Empire (today's south-western Poland and eastern Germany); however, it wasnt penned to paper until the Grimm brothers took that story and many old folk tales from the area and put it into "Grimm's Fairy Tales"; which is what Disney's 1937 Snow White was adapted from.
dude, i wouldnt care if it was trash. Also, its not actually the original, they didnt do it like the books. The problem of this movie, is that they changed everything, even if it ends up being a good movie, literally this is not snow white
Understanding? No no, they understand it. They’re intentionally choosing to burn it down and piss on the ashes. They want 0 part in some story where the woman’s dream is to fall in love and have their knight in shining armor come and sweep them off their feet. No no, that would be degrading to woman. You need them to kick ass and be tough and cool because that’s what the message should be. The world revolves around you to hell with everyone else.
In 1809 the brothers Grimm startet collecting old fairytails, documenting and rewriting them. Snowwhite (Schneewittchen) was one of them. This story had a lot of variations already back then, but the Grimms version is the most known and the one Disney settled with. This fairytail litterally comes from medieval ages.
Remember in live-action Aladdin how they had that new song with Jasmine singing about how she's so strong and independent - and then is immediately kidnapped.

Snow white without the skin as white as snow is pretty weird to me. I mean the story is about a princess who is like white as snow and dwarves.... Love...... . I don't think it will stay snow white without any one of these let alone all of them
Snow White is my favorite Disney movie. The prince is barely in it. Snow White hangs out in the woods and bakes pies and lives with seven people who absolutely respect and adore her. Watching it as a little girl, I thought the heroes were the dwarves---not the prince.
Agreed, Snow White was already a good role model of kindness and ethical behavior. Rachel Zeigler's statement "It's not 1937 anymore..." is foolish. The story was NEVER set in 1937. The story as we know it from the Disney animated version was adapted from the Brothers Grimm tales which were published in 1812, and even THEN is was already too old to nail down the authorship of the original version. Disney just pushes their social agendas no matter what source material they have to desecrate. The hypocrisy in Hollywood is unbounded. RIGHT NOW Bradley Cooper is facing backlash for wearing a fake nose to portray Leonard Bernstein, who had a large one. Leonard Bernstein's own wife and kids say it's good, no problem. So, on one hand Hollywood says, "Oh, Cooper should have cast a Jewish actor to play a Jewish person." And on the other hand Hollywood says, "Let's cast a "person of color" in the German fairy tale about a girl whose skin is white as snow..."
@@Magariz1283 The original version of the story isn't the subject of discussion. And even if it was, even experts don't agree on one specific tale. Trust me...nobody does dark fairy tales like the Germans.
it's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, just without the white, and with 1/7 of the dwarves truely brilliant story changes that definitely justified this being made
@14:30 so fucking true. We remember Snow white not because of her, but for the poisoned apple. For the different traits and personalities of the dwarves. For the fact that good won over evil. Its so basic but apparently the internal truth is something heretical to Disney.
"why would you make exactly the same movie again" that is never going to be the case taking a cartoon into another medium. it has its own direction and you can make a completely authentic tribute to the original with its own flair, exactly like Peter Jackson's LOTR
The reason these remakes keep ending up as trash or mediocre is because they're quite literally trying to fix things that weren't broken. By applying "modern day" ideas to stories that have nothing to do with modern day, they're sucking the soul out of them to "fix" things that didn't need to be fixed, and are actively making them worse
The reason they fail is because we are living through the largest gaslighting of all time and you can't lie, fake or change innate human nature. So none of this stuff resonates with audiences. Timeless stories are basically bottled human truths that last the rest of time.
What does she mean "women in position of power"? What about the queen? Isn't she a woman in position of power or does she identify herself as fighter plane or something?
Snow White is not just the classic. It was THE first big colored animated movie EVER created. It is so old that Austrian Painter from Germany had seen it and loved it.
Also don't forget, Snow White even literally launched both Walt Disney Pictures and Walt Disney Animation Studios for both Walt Disney all at once because of its huge success back in 1937; heck, Walt Disney built his entire legacy entirely on that movie!
Exactly. The power was the evil step mother
The Evil Queen was Disney's original girlboss.

Snow White, like all folk/fairytales, was about learning life lessons. In this case there were multiple lessons, among them being:
1. Wariness around new things is healthy. (The dwarves were always wary around everyone, which saved Snow White multiple times)
2. Always be polite, accepting and respectful, regardless of external differences. (This is why Snow White and the dwarves got along quickly)
3. Too much trust in strangers is dangerous, though. (the Queen actually tried to kill Snow White three times: Once with a corset, once with a poisoned comb, lastly with the apple)
4. And obsessive envy over what others have will only harm you in the long run. (The Queen was miserable and unhappy whenever she was not the fairest, and died a horrible death)
The main issue with the remakes nowadays is that these people don't even consider the original lessons of the story and just want to force their own ideals into a thing that they think will help them sell it.
(Robin Williams' role in things cannot be ignored though)
All of these stories have lessons in them: You can rely on others for what you cannot manage alone, you shouldn't judge on appearances, always be polite, honest and respectful, be careful what you wish for, be wary of strangers, be true to yourself and not what others expect of you, don't be selfish, don't be rude.
None of those lessons need to be removed from any story to 'update' them for modern audiences. They are STILL relevant lessons.
Can I use this for my AP seminar essay?

And just like the Snow white, the changes were not done because it would make better cinema or a more impactful story (aka creativity), it was done out of ulterior motives (aka corruption), and thus made it worse, and down right bad.
as applied to the star wars sequels, this tolkein quote makes perfect sense.
"Women didn't have any power"
The entire kingdom is run by a queen
LOL
It's also not only the first movie, it was a fairytale first.

it wasnt just groundbreaking when it came out, it was loved throughout the age.
this is an everlasting movie, unlike the remakes.

This could take the throne of worst Disney live action remake
Watched it for Charlize Theron, watched the 2nd for Emily Blunt & Charlize Theron's acting. Script wise was meh, but their acting are still superb.
She probably got broken up with and now she doesn't believe in love
The ultimate goal of the left has always been breaking up the family. It's not rocket science and they do not hide it at all.
She will never find love herself because she is a evil witch and she is super bitter about it so that's why.
The queen is the most powerful person in the film for gods sake, what is she on about?
Because she only watched it one time as a kid and was scared and never touched it again, she said
We don't need any live action remakes. I personally want to see new stories.
What do you mean? Snow Brown and the Seven Simps is a new story.
@paulw5039 Correction I want new movies that don't disrespectfully spit on beloved stories.
Well, that would require writers who are good (which Disney won't hire because they hire based on skin color instead of ability), as well as the studio to not have quintupled down on pushing stupid narratives that people are sick of.
Yeah, Maleficent was decent because it was at least a semi original story.
Let us not forget Jennifer Lawrence lead the charge as the "1st" female action star.

Prince got some screentime early in the film too.

The book is dark so dark the stories left me with trauma ☠️ and i read berserk whole 372 chapter's
I thought the Grimms collected already known stories and just put them together into a single source.
@@dianaruman8723 Both - they collected fairy tales and folk stories and altered them a little bit here and there, labled them theirs and published it.

I get goosebumps just thinking about it. Movies with heart can evoke such a response.
bro that's an interesting take. never thought about it like that
Yes the characters were beautiful, and it's a fantasy story not supposed to be in strict "reality"

I'm playing devil's advocate because ultimately I'm not gonna watch this. No nees to fix what's not broken
That fact was sort of interesting, but I wouldn't really say it was fun.

Wasn't there also something about changing the story to not caring about the prince either?
I vote for 'Fool and The Gang'

Show white already watered down the Grimm brothers tales, so Disney deserves this
It's like phenomenal in the same sense that Gertie the Dinosaur is though.
There's a reason Rome considered actors to be at the bottom on the social hierarchy

@@RmnGnzlz Hell yes, people would be all over a retelling of El Dorado from Chel's perspective. Especially if you pushed the coy, shrewd, femme fatale angle.
(You can learn alot from Defunctland: The Craziest Party Walt ever threw as well as Micky Mouse Park)
So even if you don't care for Snow White it is an actual revolution and was historically significant for animation and ironically came from Disney and who would never take such a huge risk like it ever.
Fun Fact: Adolf Hitler was a fan of the film but never got to see it before he started his invasion of Europe.
1917 El Apòstol (1h10m) - from Quirino Cristiani (Argentina)
1926 Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1h05m) - from Lotte Reiniger (Germany)
Snow White is not the first full lenght movie theater to be produced nor get success and recognition.
As for the most influencial one I would consider "Le rois et l'oiseau" from Paul Grimault & Jacques Prévert who still stand to be a major inspiration for animators (but this is only my biased opinion)

The funniest part about this is that they inevitably end up writing villains instead of heroes, with no self-awareness that they've done so.

It started with a song about unrealistic love, but taught priorities, and how to live happily wherever you are, and love will come along later.

this is what I also understood about the story of snow white. also the plot was about the pure good (snow white) and the pure evil (evil queen) and the results of each.
Let's not forget the Prince and her were engaged (medieval time and politics) he basically left his kingdom for a princess he had met and heard she passed away...I still don't see why the dude gets so much hatred
I agree with this
2:40 The two most important and powerful characters in the original story are both female.
Surprised they're not saying the prince SA'd her.

@@anon8544That's why Superman bores me.
I don't understand the idea of just completely changing everything core to n old film in a remake instead of just writing a completely new story.

The people that knew the original story probably thought the same thing when the movie came out in 37.
But when he approached the King and acted like he was hot shit, saluting him as if he was a soldier, Agesilaus basically told him off and said "Are you not Callippides the Showmen?"

"Morality" over happiness is the motto of the people who make these movies
"I was scared of the original cartoon"
This alone says enough..
i mean that's understandable, but to follow up with "I've never seen it since" not great
Your intuitions on the topic are right on point.
I agee with this. A stort about human envy and hope. Period
Just cast a black dude with blonde hair who's really really cold all the time.
Could have used the darkest girl and say: Tongue red as a rose, Skin black as ebony, Sclera white as snow.
Wahhhhhh
Mirror Mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?

They should cast a girl who is addicted to doing/selling coke but tries to pretty up to potential buyers by dying her hair black and painting her lips red. Would prolly be better than this new adaptation.
Agree 100% about the idea of a character having no flaws. No one is infallible. An infallible character feels flat and preachy whereas someone with flaws is relatable.
It was the very first fully animated feature film release, so yeah it has hella history. A Brothers Grimm story.
The original Snow White is incredible. I rewatched it recently, and it is not boring at all, amazingly beautiful, and short and entertaining.

This surface level of understanding of classic stories is exactly one of the biggest problems with writers, actors and modern audiences
Understanding? No no, they understand it. They’re intentionally choosing to burn it down and piss on the ashes. They want 0 part in some story where the woman’s dream is to fall in love and have their knight in shining armor come and sweep them off their feet. No no, that would be degrading to woman.
Disney has zero rights to the story
@@MultiLimpet I dunno, they changed enough from the Brothers Grimm one might argue that.

I mean no romance doesnt have to be bad either. Tons of movies are ruined by a forced romantic plot that takes part of the run time. But instead of saying there is romance but its pushed a bit into the background to explore other elements of the plot. They have to go, this is about girl bossing and not needing any man. Who knows if we cut the prince character all togheter because fuck men and fuck 7 dwarves too.
Like lets say i want to make a Superman movie and i wanna cut Lois Lane boring ass sub plots as much as possible to focus on Superman, fighting scenes and expanding on the villain of the movie instead. Thats fine. But i wouldnt go Women suck and this is not a shitty love story.

"why would you make exactly the same movie again"
that is never going to be the case taking a cartoon into another medium. it has its own direction and you can make a completely authentic tribute to the original with its own flair, exactly like Peter Jackson's LOTR
