Regarding Velma being top animated show on HBO Max, MoistCritical had a great point, HBO/WB has cancelled and removed most of their animated shows. Velma is the only actively produced animated show on HBO Max right now and there's only 1 other non-cancelled show that's currently not airing episodes. Even if you include kids shows, that's 3 more non-cancelled shows that aren't currently airing new episodes.
@@alexwardlow178 No, they can't say whatever they want. For example, there are regulations in European Union that require you to provide data on which you base your statements. Don't know how it works in USA, but if HBO is saying that "Velma is a top animated show on HBO MAX" without any explanation then it's misleading consumers and for sure they're going to be sued for that.
@@sovren in America they don't have to post any statistics or evidence, they just say what they want. So HBO could just say that and not be telling the truth. Another good example is a video game. So everyone was like "that's what they say but there's no real way to tell"
Considering there hasn't been a new HBO animated show since 2021, there's a good possibility that an unknown IP written by a decently famous actor from the office would have taken off. It's just that hollywood is cripplingly afraid of even the smallest risks.
Exactly. They can't create anything for themselves, they have to steal from white people & leech off their success. My hatred for that show is unparalleled. It would've been great, without her character in it, to be honest. IF A SHOW IS ONLY GOOD WITHOUT THE MAIN CHARACTER (you) IN IT, WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU. My mother was obsessed with the show. So, unfortunately, I've seen a lot more of it than I wanted to.
I watched a majority of what people showed in their videos regarding Season 1, this shitty rage bait is bullshit and feels like character assassination on the entire cast. I've seen people in the comments sections of other videos apologize to Scrappy Doo before they did season 2 (I never found him annoying myself, but still).

last year I repented to God then begged for help with all my heart, "I was an Atheist." I then had a dream of Jesus coming before God and he spoke of the Tabernacle in perfect context, "A word I didn't know existed because I never read the bible", and the love I felt from Jesus when I held him in my arms was unlike anything I've ever felt before - A lifetime of joy every second - It brought me to sobbing and it changed my life, forever. I've had other miracles since, a Few being a light turning on in answer to deeply needful prayer over a Dozen times, seeing a orb of light pass across my face hours before a major surgery, seeing an Angel in a dream the night my mother prayed for me to see one, "Without telling me", and So much more. Know that God and Jesus ARE real and that they love us deeply. Let go of your hatred and Imagine yourself holding the people who've hurt you. Tell them you love and forgive them and I believe we should do our best to follow the 10 commandments. I don't speak for God, but I believe Love Is The Answer.
I think the problems with this and the Ghostbusters example are more about tearing down something people like (and being a core part of the starting audience for the new show) instead of adding to setting. It would make more sense to set their stories in those settings without replacing existing characters as that would give them much more leeway for developing the characters and deviating from the original.
I think another problem, if im just taking all this on face value, is that these things are product of "ghettoization" by social media algorithms and how they explode fringe views into a way it looks as if its mainstream (when it clearly isnt). And then, again taking it on face value, shit like this gets released with the idea this is what people want. When in reality, its just a very loud fringe minorty calling for it. And in addition you also have the self segregation in real life, i.e. what people in L.A. belief is vastly different from the rest in california. Ive said this in other videos of asmongold regarding this topic: The idea that people dont like women leads or black people leads, or whatever... is bulshit. What people dont like, is watching a movie or series, regardless if its an existing franchise or a new one... Where the entire script, setting, etc... serves as merely a vessel for an ideological message. Ghostbusters was precisely like this. The movie existed to serve the characters, rather then the characters serving the movie.
@@Tritriumchannelexactly. I think it's a distinct result of LA culture bleed and reading too hard into social media. The majority of people don't care about inclusion (meaning poor inclusion to pander) and outright dislike it, it's why 2023 was the worst year for Hollywood ever or in a long time, can't remember. They use the small loud minority to try and do damage control anytime there's backlash against it which results in critics being dismissed as racist misogynist etc or haters and will usually spin things no matter how big or small to make it look like those critics are bad people. It happens way too frequently. Ahmed Best and the Asian actress from the sequel trilogy of Star Wars are big examples of the narrative twisting, both commented on Hollywood being shit and how bad it's effected them on social media and news articles about both twisted it to be about fan harassment when neither had ever mentioned it and both made it clear it was about the industry and the people within it with the actress outright saying she felt that they used her to pander. It's sad, but hopefully the big money loss going on cleans up this mess

I don't even think the 2016 ghostbusters was about tearing anything down. It was just made by incompetent people. Let's not forget how they ruined Shaggy in the name of diversity. It's pretty clear that they wanted to make one of the original characters black and chose Shaggy because he is a popular character. BUT they couldn't make their one black character a burnout/stoner, so they changed the character entirely, gave him a new name, and left only the color of his T-shirt. They could have easily just made Fred black with minor adjustments to the character. Then they wouldn't have had a target for all the jokes about white people though..

Parents don't want their children to be sexualised at a young age, so what do producers do; they freaking get a children's character and make a perverted version of a beloved show. Something to keep in mind with the #1 animated show on HBO Max, it is January. Pretty sure January is where you put shows and movies that you expect to die. People don't go to see movies in January. You see this in other areas, too. I was talking to the employees at a restaurant this week and they told me that their hours are cut back this month because it's the slowest month of the year. I doubt this was released at this time because they had actual confidence in it.
Yeah but this isn't a cinema movie. TV ratings go down in the summer as people go out to restaurants as the sun is out. In winter when it's dark in the evenings people watch more TV.

The arguments I have heard for why it exists were as a tax write off and as a means to retain the Scooby Doo license for low cost. However both of those goals couldve been accomplished by giving the show to someone with an actual idea on how to make a good spin off with some amount of value. As it stands Velma doesn't even have a story, just events strung together by stuff happening on screen while every character is a direct mouthpiece for the showrunner to rant infront of or at the viewer.
A popular theory was that it was a unique show that had the scooby doo label slapped on by WB because Hollywood and the writers integrated it and shat on it because they didn't want it to be Scooby doo lmao
The big problem alot of people have with race swapped characters is the creators and press shoving the swap in everyone's faces and saying "SEE, SEEEEE, AREN'T WE SO STUNNING AND BRAVE!" If they didnt make a big deal about the swap and just focused on good character/story writing, no-one would care or make a fuss.
Yeah I really couldn’t care less if they actually had good writing. It’s all about “the first____, such a momentous day in history” lol. It’s just frustrating because now it’s standard operating procedure with these streaming services, with the sole purpose of overhauling existing IP, because they don’t have any new ideas of their own. From a business perspective it makes sense for investing in a project, but man when will they start feeling their pockets get lighter and decide to change ?
It's a shame cause I would love to see some original characters being created that may include some of the mythos of their cultural heritage and some of their cultural history as a way to find unique solutions to otherwise baffling circumstances for a western audience. Breaks my heart to see outrage culture being used as a means to generate revenue than creating new IPs and stories with different characters to watch.
Just watched the first episode, but I didn't have any problem with the race swaps - at all. (And I didn't find it to be very offensive to be honest.) The actual show and story was neither funny or interesting though, so I won't be watching more.
Still i wouldn't watch it, I can understand race swapping when you are making it in live action (for example Nick fury) since you need the actor to match the vibe of the character, the race is secondary, but in an animated show? What is the need to make a race swap other than political reasons? That's why I don't really like it

People don't like this woke content or "subverting" content as some call it because it's opposite their values, but the people who made the show have said show's values so they'll keep making stuff like this until they're forced to stop, so either people stop watching this crap all together and Hollywood as a whole capsizes or their (hollywood's) "values" start to consume more and more of American culture until they have everyone under their control. OR, third option, there's a full-on civil war. I see no other choices, unfortunate time for America lol.
I like how Asmon went from being disappointed with the direction of the show to actively endorsing it's direction and giving the writers more ideas. A bigger and more meaningful character arc was shown in this youtube video than in Velma
I grew up with a white Fury, but Samuel L Jacksson made a really good version of it, an there was no fanfare and announcements about him being black or whatnot. He just came in, did an awesome job and we loved it.
the analogy of lighting yourself on fire because you were cold, Asmon is giving a LOT of credit to our quarterly profits short term soulless business suit executives
Could not agree more with Asmon's final comment. I think that the creators were actually trying to make something good, but this is the best they could come up with. It's super embarrassing, but I don't think it's on purpose.
Race swapping is usually generally finicky as there can be reasons for and against it. Like how dare people want visual consistency with the character as well. Consistency is a key factor in keeping people into them. You can't turn characters like Sonic into a green giraffe and keep the same name and expect people to be on board with it. You wouldn't race change real people so fans will get annoyed if you drastically change them even visually. If they're a different race but still look like the character then usually it can be ignored and forgiven. If race swapping is done, the best you can hope for is forgiveness. Like with Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, if a character isn't as well known or they do a good job of it, it can be forgiven (although that's usually not the case now). And considering that it's animation, race swapping doesn't really need to happen as much since black voice actors can play white characters and reverse is true (although some people won't be happy with that). Another problem with this whole "representation" thing is it's clear that it's just for virtue signaling and just happens because they need it. Look at comics with randomly making characters gay for no reason like Tim Drake. If you have them go from dating women for most of their lives then randomly have them ditch their partner to go dating guys, of course people will go "what the hell?". If representation matters as much as they say it does then make new characters. Harley Quinn was a new character for the animated series that she ended up being a mainstay. But they can't make good characters or stories. That's why they tag them into existing brands.
Nick Fury is a bad example. It isnt thr Race swap itself that pisses people off. It is the *INTENTION* of the race swap. If they made Nick fury black because "representation" people would still be angry, however, Nick Fury is black because Sam L Jackson is a bad ass actor and can play nick fury amazingly
Because its smart. It got greenlit foor a second season. Wouldn't have happened without the views. Hollywood has been doing it since 2010. Why do you think the Star Wars sequels are so bad?
The critic rating on RT is almost always higher than the audience score and it usually never dips below a certain threshold because the critics are the ones defending the garbage. Sometimes it’s because they get invited to the premiere events for some of these things and get given free stuff, or they get offered the first opportunity by the creators to write an article or review before anybody else, so to protect that access, they don’t really say anything negative.
I imagine it's just because a critic's job is different from an audience's desires. An audience just considers "did I like it," and if they liked it then they'll give it five stars, and if they didn't then they give it none, with a few scattered people voting in between. A critic actively considers matters like animation speed/quality, music choice, specific joke timings, etc, and consequently puts a lesser value on the broad-strokes things that impact the audience score the most, ie the writing/changed characterization. In other words, the critics are not being paid to guess how much folk will like it, they're being paid to quantify how "Objectively Good" they think it is.
@@fishworshipper You described how a critic should do their job, unfortunately we've seen plenty of times that's not actually how they rate stuff, specially if you actually read the reviews they write. Majority of the critics don't even have a background or education on the matter. Just look at the Animation category in the Oscars, they openly admit to not care about animation, that it's something only for kids, why do you think movies like Toy Story 4 and Encanto won when you had nominees with objectively better animation, direction and script?

According to a quick google search, there are/have been 18 animated series on HBO Max. Only 5 of them are marked as 'Adult Animation.' 8 have 1 season. 4 have 2 seasons. 6 have 3 or more seasons. 11 are currently ended. 6 are slated for another season at an unannounced date or are running in miniseries fashion. Velma is the *_only_* currently ongoing animated HBO series. Other than Velma, the most recent HBO animated shows were Batwheels, Santa Inc and Ten year old Tom, which all released in 2021 with less than 40 episodes combined. Velma being the top animated show on HBO is not only unsurprising, it's pretty much inevitable considering it's been almost 3 years since the last one aired. It's not that big of a deal, but I don't know why they had to make Sarah black. But I'll agree the TLoU series is starting off pretty amazing. I really like that the added the extra scenes(Ellie in Firefly quarantine/meeting Marlene) that weren't in the game.
They didn't "have" to make her black. The actress who auditioned and won the role was biracial. The main aspect to Sarah's character is that she's Joel's loving, somewhat sassy daughter. You think she has to be caucasian to communicate those elements?
@@mischiefandmayhem8409 I dont mind this argument as long as you'd stay consistent if it was the other way around, and would be okay with a white actor portraying a character that was black in the source material

I'm personally someone who finds the people that say that race swapping characters doesn't matter as a bunch of hypocrites. I say this mainly because I know for a FACT that if the race being swapped wasn't the socially acceptable one like white people then the people who say it's not a problem would be singing an entirely different tune. For example what if Nick Fury was a black character to begin with? Would people have been okay with it if they had race swapped him for a white character? Of course they wouldn't be okay with it right?
Considering how many animated shows got cancelled (like there is a new one every week) I seriously think she funded this herself. This whole show screams of "I've been upper elite my entire life feel sorry for me".
My hope is that this show ends in the same fashion as "The Aristocrats" joke. This is the only way I would comprehend why this cesspool was ever vomited into being.
I will mention that there's a marvel comic universe-the ultimate universe I believe-where Nick fury is based on Samuel Jackson, and the reason he's Nick fury in the MCU is because he got a lot of leverage over them when he discovered they used his likeness in the comics without permission. But there are a few examples where the actor steals the show enough to offset the racial swapping of characters. But most of the time, that doesn't happen and the change is ultimately useless, and therefore a bad change. Major changes should either be made to fit a different medium better or something similar-like fixing plot holes made as the series progressed or things like that, minor changes aren't cared about as much if they don't go against established things in the original. Of course if the writing or adaption is good enough for people to like them despite creating new plot holes that's another story, but in most cases the best way to get fans to like an adaptation is to try to stick to the original or the spirit of the original as much as possible. Pedro still looks a lot like Joel though, so its not really seen as as bad. Superman has had non white actors as well, but they've always looked like Superman. That's a huge factor, if you're going to play a character in live action you should make the effort to look like the character. Voice acting is completely different, you just hire whomever has the best voice for the character, because the character should still look like the character no matter who is voicing them. Very rarely does a race swapped character's actor have enough natural talent to embody the character to the point nobody else could play them. Morgan Freeman as Red in Shawshank redemption is literally the only one that comes to mind, but every other time I've always thought-there really wasn't a single actor who actually looks like the character that did a similar level of performance? And that's a major factor, if I'm not convinced the actor is the character by the performance, the looks have to pick up the slack. I'm a ginger, so I've seen all the lackluster race swapping done to ginger characters in live action. It is annoying as all get out, especially when the performance doesn't even justify the change itself. It makes it feel like a cheap way to pander at the expense of quality. But Velma feels purposely spiteful.
They missed a huge oppertunity to use the scooby doo trademark to make a boondocks like show which deconstructs the modern zeitgeist. Not possible with a producer who is pushing 40.
Thing is, some people seemed to have learned from “hate watching”. Just look at Disney, people aren’t hate watching their content, the viewers still remaining just aren’t watching. In fact, at this point, Disney has probably lost a good amount of their once loyal fans.
And to think that Mindy Kaling is attempting to push for a second season despite only 2 episodes in, AND the global hate she's generating. Absolutely fucking wild.
Build a fire for someone and you only keep them warm for the night, but if you light that person on fire, you keep them warm for the rest of their life.
Harley Quinn's animated series did a great job at a "woke" adult animated show while not fucking it up. Great humor, beautiful animation and it does an amazing job staying true to established DC mythos.
The thing about Harley Quinn is it might be a bit hyperbolae in some of the things the character do but its not completely unbelievable and actually does it in a funny way. Velma is just completely different characters with absolutely nothing in common with the original.
If you want to see a female character who is ridiculously and unbelievably written, watch Yellowstone. The character of 'Beth' is utterly ridiculous...
Sadly, I genuinely think this is pretty much the logical conclusion of woke writing. Sexualization of minors, race swapping, overt racism toward white people, etc. I think they think it’s actually good.
People say that race swapping doesn't bother them until it affects something they like in a way that they don't like. If were put in charge of making a TV adaptation of, say, Spawn, where I decided to make myself the actor for Spawn despite the fact I'm a white dude, people would rip into and insult me absolutely relentlessly over it until the day I died. I'd be labeled a racist a billion times over before the pilot episode was even finished.
I feel like there's a competition over the last few years for people who get a hold of the Scooby-Doo IP to see who can create the most hated show/adaptation/spinoff.
The reason critical scores for bad shows tend to be higher (55%) than viewer scores (7%) is because critics tend to be familiar with shows that are of far lower quality than audiences. That's at least assuming the show wasn't also review bombed in addition to that. For some of the other examples, there may be other reasons.
Rings of power creators: "We created something that made the original fans really angry and disappointed! 😀👍" The creators of Velma: "Hold my soylent".
Best faith interpretation: it doesn't matter as long as the end result is still good, if not even improved due to the change (if only because the race-swapped actor is the perfect fit, like Nick Fury for example). It matters because on the face of it it's an arbitrary change that alienates the adaptation from its source material, but it can be an improvement, or at least it can be neutral. But usually it's neither of them, and that's the case when there are nefarious reasons behind the changes, like active disrespect for the source material (this one for example, or Netflix The Witcher), or ideological possession that disregards anything else. You can be a "progressive", and weave your themes and ideas into a story, and it's usually okay with people as long as the end result is coherent, well-made and interesting.
"Velma was the most number #1 too trending animated series on HBO max" I'mma need whoever made that tweet to calm down. They don't need to take *ALL* the cocaine at once before tweeting out nonsense. Moderation people, moderation.
I like Asmon's pitches for the show at 30:35 ish, if they had actually had the guts to equally roast EVERYONE. Like South Park, or Rockstar's GTA. But they clearly didn't and it was only from a woke angle that's too sensitive to poke fun at themselves in that sort of way. Literally how safe spaces even became a term, that's why that can't happen. But yes, Asmon could actually turn that dumpster fire of a show around, if they remotely had a spine.
Drawn together too, they were clear to make fun of EVERYTHING, you can see all the stereotypes are not to meant to take seriously but still funny AF. I think they made fun of their own creators as well
Let me help this show with a little script : So Velma's phone starts ringing, she picks it up, then a male voice with indian accent just says : Hello this is Amazon support how can i help you with today? Then Velma just drops the phone and starts yelling how much she hates scammers. You are welcome :D
More common than you think. In the comic industry there are several writers that have gone on record saying things to the effect of "angry fans are engaged fans". It's why Peter Parker is constantly given the short end of the stick. The entire reason is to go to extremes. Pander or provoke.
At about minute 31, when you start to name ways to make the show better/worse, you reminded me of Mike Tyson Mysteries. That show was a sort of parody of Scooby Doo that was often offensive. Thing was, it was funny.
This show managed to unite people from all walks of life, from each political party, from every race, religion, and creed even if it was only a brief moment... Everyone hates this sht.
It has never mattered whether or not they change the race of a particular character. it only matters WHY they change the race of a particular character.
I’ll never believe that people deliberately make content that people will hate for views. Making something people want to watch will always be more successful. These creators just have an idea that they think is good and it turns out they’re wrong.
I think it has more to do with the writers and directors veing activists first and writers/directors second. They could have just made this to piss off people whose political views, gender or race they dislike because they get kicks from seeing the outrage.

I think another problem, if im just taking all this on face value, is that these things are product of "ghettoization" by social media algorithms
and how they explode fringe views into a way it looks as if its mainstream (when it clearly isnt).
And then, again taking it on face value, shit like this gets released with the idea this is what people want.
When in reality, its just a very loud fringe minorty calling for it.
And in addition you also have the self segregation in real life, i.e. what people in L.A. belief is vastly different from the rest in california.
Ive said this in other videos of asmongold regarding this topic:
The idea that people dont like women leads or black people leads, or whatever...
I'll never get tired of witnessing Asmon's reaction when a Keeps commercial shows up in the videos 😂
I just happened upon this video again after this long and spent 5 minutes just rewinding those 10 seconds over and over again absolutely crying laughing on the floor. 😂😭
In that case, it would have made sense to just keep the characters as they were to avoid having ti spend time on re-creating them
A popular theory was that it was a unique show that had the scooby doo label slapped on by WB because Hollywood and the writers integrated it and shat on it because they didn't want it to be Scooby doo lmao
Next season is gonna be something like : “Scooby is not a dog but a furry and falls in love with shaggy”
gives a new meaning to the words scooby snack.
if the leaks are true then scooby is a black woman named scoobi yeah the dog is a black woman now lol
Instead, scrappy doo shows up and kills velma. A true hero.
And then they use "the fans are racist" as a defense to every criticism of their show/movie
That's why I don't really like it
Creator: Here's my new show! You'll love it!
Audience: It sucks. We hate it.
Creator: Oh, you hate it? Well, ummm, yeah you were SUPPOSED to hate it! Yeah.
This is getting really old.
I haven't been watching Asmon for a long time at all, but damn how I respect how he is one of the really few content creators who actually sits through the ad-read. "If I'm generating content of your video, you should gain money from the sponsor in return".

Don't get your hopes up just yet, they've been cleared for a season 2 already.
i mean... i feel like it's kinda obvious where we're going, no?

Very true
But the mental image though...still kinda chuckling.
There is never a valid reason for it, it’s anyways unnecessary and bad. Just make a new character instead of hijacking an established one.
Race swapping implies the race the character is swapped to isn't worth the effort of creating new characters for.
The BBC and some others have started race swapping HISTORICAL FIGUREs. How the fuck haven't they gotten the message 🫠
The real mystery is just what the Hell was going on through the creators heads, when making this show.
The chemical cocktail of Cocaine and Alcohol.
I mean you have to be drunk and on coke to think this is a good idea even on paper.
Creators head: God I hate white straight conservative males.
How did that get the green light from the producers also? LUL
Because its smart. It got greenlit foor a second season. Wouldn't have happened without the views. Hollywood has been doing it since 2010. Why do you think the Star Wars sequels are so bad?
@@carlosdanger8043unfortunately you are right, there is a market for it and these people have no morals. Whatever makes the money rain
@@fishworshipper Well they objectively settled on 55 percent which with all the obvious leftist bias at RT is pretty bad.

They race swapped Isaac in Castlevania and both iterations of him are awesome. Pedro Pascal makes an awesome Joel as well.
Indeed they did but the difference is the show is fucking good! Isaac has the best character development of the lot as far as I'm concerned. Noone would have cared for the race swaps etc in Velma if it was good most likely. Though I could be wrong cause not as ma y ppl know who Isaac I'd from castlevania as ppl know who scooby and the gang are. So there likely would have been some backlash over race swapping but less so than with velma
I don't support racism, sorry.
I don't think enough people remember Curse of Darkness to even realize Isaac was race swapped. He was definitely one of the best characters in the show, up there with Trevor imo.
According to a quick google search, there are/have been 18 animated series on HBO Max. Only 5 of them are marked as 'Adult Animation.'
8 have 1 season.

I really like that the added the extra scenes(Ellie in Firefly quarantine/meeting Marlene) that weren't in the game.
wait, is it out already? damn.
They didn't "have" to make her black. The actress who auditioned and won the role was biracial. The main aspect to Sarah's character is that she's Joel's loving, somewhat sassy daughter. You think she has to be caucasian to communicate those elements?
Welcome to planet Earth, where Black people exist and may audition for a part in a live action story.

I kinda think a lot of people would feel sorry for her if we knew more but not for the reasons she'd think
@@mandowarrior123 other stuff has been on the cusp of being released and then canceled.
Everything that actress does rubs me the wrong way so a show that you're supposed to hate seems like a perfect vehicle for her.
She's an over 40 years old useless and spoiled rich brat who got handed jobs that don't deserve the moment she got out of college.

I agree with his Big Mouth statement, Ive been saying it to all my friends who try to tell me its "so hilarious".
The creators of Velma: "Hold my soylent".
Amon: "race swapping doesn't matter"
Also Asmon: "of course it matters"
@Yumidori Iro Sam Jackson's Nick Fury isn't a race swap. Nick Fury has been black in the comic books since the year 2000
