Important Edit: it seems as though perfect guarding will be far more important than guard pointing in MH Wilds, However, there are times were you can guard point to continue a combo and still block a hit, where a perfect guard would stop the combo early, so it's still a very useful skill to have in your CB arsenal! How are y'all enjoying the Open Beta so far??? Also, if you want, try slowing down the video speed, and watching the combos in the top right, that way you can see exactly what I'm doing at any point in the video! I tried to explain as much as I could, but I know that seeing the combos is super helpful! Editor's note: it looks like the AED's may only do 2 phial hits, still only at the cost of 1 phial!
You can also hold *circle* while charging to directly deposit your phials into your shield. Or after a shield punch, if you hold R2 + Triangle + Circle, you can also use it. It also has a GP, so you can use that. Also, if you hold your attack button (Triangle or Circle) while attacking in axe mode (with power axe), you'll get buzzsaw DMG ticks. It can also be used for AED and AED follow-up.
what makes guard points so good is that if you know which moves are generating guard points you don't need to dodge or guard in combo animation since you know that guard point gonna protect you and you can turn it into an even stronger combo if the guard point is successful. It makes the charge blade a much more fluid weapon.
So can you not go into savage axe from guard pointing, only though perfect guarding? Cb vet here, played a couple of hunts and finding it difficult not to guard point everything xD
you can technically use a guard point to do a power clash, which you can follow up with the savage axe, but that's gonna be rarer. As far as I know you can't savage axe directly out of a guard point, but it's usually not an issue because CB does a good job of wounding, and the focus strike is easy to connect. Even on my first hunt when I was getting used to it I had like 75%+ savage axe uptime!
Better to perfect guard if you want to activate Power axe. Guard points seem less important now, since the only benefit is the shield discharge damage, and (presumably) increased block power. Perfect block, though, seems to do most of what GPs do, without the discharge damage, but with the power axe follow up
The best thing in wild is that i can have 2 weapons in a mission and my main 2 weapon in world was CB and 2 blades what an awesome improvement and it will be fun
I played CB in wilds because it was one of the few weapons that didn't have some stupid thing about it that I had to switch my mind off for. I'm not thrilled to see that the Perfect Guard Vs. Guard Point is something I will have to overlook in Wilds. Just seems dumb that the higher skill option gives worse follow ups. Would be so nice if GPs were used for the offensive stuff: Savage Axe mode and SAED. And then the PG was used for the more defensive options: Power Clash and reduced chip damage perhaps. It would allow both to have valid uses and the higher skill option gates the more powerful follow ups. Hate that currently there isn't much reason to GP instead of PG.
the CB feels so clunky right now I might need to play a lot more to feel it out I hate the focus mode attack, my guy misses the savage axe grind animation like half the time but the monster still gets stagger by the last combo even if it is hitting the air? looks janky af lol
yea i just figured out that it is essential to use focus mode, if you play a traditional style then it is superrrrr janky, it is essential to use focus mode for every aed and saed, hell even focus attacks since those will miss half the time too if you dont hold the focus button, the turn radius is significantly nerfed compared to older games so you will miss A LOT OF shots if you play traditional style. I dont really like the focus playstyle but it is super easy to aim aed and saed now that it feels like its cheating. I really hope they bring back the turn radius for non focus aed and saed but now that i am spamming focus mode, the game feels smoother and a lot easier lol It actually almost doesnt feel like monster hunter any more since you do not have to commit to an attack direction any more, it is essentially easy mode, you can switch attack direction during the animation. I guess it is made for a wider/newer audience.
@@DarkBurster try changing your focus mode to toggle. Since it feels better to have focus mode enabled most of the time for CB, it alleviates the need to hold the button down all the time
I'm wondering what the different use cases are between perfect guard(pg) and guardpoint(gp). Having two enhanced guard techniques would seem redundant unless there are clear reasons to use one over the other in specific situations Based on your video it just seems like pg if you need to get savage up then after its up use gp for the phial proc. Are there any other differences between the two? Maybe a stronger guard on one? How quickly you can cancel into them mid combo?
The two probably have the same guard multipliers, but guard points can be done in the middle of a combo if you're not going to recover fast enough for a PG.
that's a good point, from what I've tested and heard, guarding (and perfect guarding) can cancel out of some attack animations, whereas the guard point attacks have to be done during a combo or from standstill, since they're weapon attacks that 'happen' to guard. also, perfect guarding has a lot of forgiveness, you can do it quite a bit earlier than a guard point and still get a perfect guard. So, where if you went too early with a guard point attack, you'd just swing your weapon and get hit, the perfect guard would still proc
Asked this in canta's stream, he thinks perfect guard is better if you can use it but guard point still has its uses such as being a safer guard option mid combo. In short perfect guard will always be the better option if you can confidently trigger it.
as far as I know, it can do that, differing based on the terrain you fight it on, not 100% sure what each thing does differently, but it does exist in game!
perfect guard is better in Wilds, for sure, after more testing. but guard pointing allows you to do most of the same follow up actions, and can be done with certain weapon moves so it's a bit more fluid. all in all, it gives you more options for guarding mid combo where you can't always cancel into guarding
So first time playing monster hunter and I went straight for the charge blade cuz it looked bad ass and got bored of greatsword just two questions, is charging the sword worth it and do you save that move that uses all your vials for the end of savage axe mode
1. charging the sword typically isn't worth it, as it doesn't impact axe mode that much, and axe mode is where the damage is at. 2. you can use the SAED (uses all phials) at any time, I wouldn't recommend using it at all if you have savage axe active, or only after a perfect guard or guard point I would recommend looping this combo during savage axe: Elemental Discharge 1 > Elemental Discharge 2 > Amped Element Discharge > Amped Element Discharge Follow Up and repeat. On PS that would be just repeating O > O > O > O or on Xbox it's B > B > B > B
Is neutral Guard Hopping still a thing for positioning in this game or is it removed from the moveset? neutral guard hopping meaning pressing evade to execute a quick hop immediately from normal guarding in neutral position.

I wonder if PG and GP affect sharpness the same. But why wouldn’t I just perfect guard in the vast majority of situations? Never gonna choose to GP from neutral… unless it’s faster?
