That’s one thing about Filipinos - they give care… with a heart. See when John said, “I get too attached to my patient(s)”? And this is especially true when we take care of elderly patients. They’re like families to us. It will truly warm your heart when patients express their deepest gratitude to you; even with words, such as, “What can I do without you?” It would bring tears to your eyes. @nursejohnn mahirap ang trabaho. Pero pag mahal mo ang ginagawa mo, mamahalin ka din pabalik nito. All the best!

you don't ever have to apologize for showing true human emotion and the reality of just how hard it can be to loose someone you care for on many days throughout multiple months. this world needs more people like you who are willing to dive just as deep emotionally with everyone they interact with. It isn't a problem but rather a virtue, and I hope that you never loose this light.

Thank you for the veterinary med shout out! There truly are many parallels in our field and your pod cast has really helped here as well. I see it as a full circle, you take care of us, we take care of your pets and they take care of you. There’s a beauty in that, I think. Love you so much John, thank you for all you do!

I've met A LOT of healthcare workers in my 30+ years of being alive so many of them sucked to the point I hate going to see any healthcare professionals. Thank you Nurse John for being the very few that cares so much for your patients and going beyond your duties to make them feel comfortable in order to have a better experience. Thank you for your service, hardwork, effort, and compassion we need more people like you in the world. It makes me have a little more faith in humanity again.

I hope in every health care workplace, there is someone like John inspiring the team to be guided by their hearts. Sometimes I think health staff are burnt out and feel powerless to change the circumstances of patients' lives and they become hardened and lose their way.
Its vital to be trained well, and if we also listen to our hearts, we can best serve our patients. We are more intuitive and it saves so much time and effort in the long run.
It takes courage to do the right thing, even if it means questioning policies and procedures and changing the status quo. This is how organisational change happens.
Be a Maverick and follow your heart. ❤

I am giving you the warmest hug from accross the internet John. My 1 year old baby boy is post liver transplant and after lots of suffering is now thriving. I live to love on his transplant department staff because they mean the very world to me and my husband and as a mental health therapist I relate to how they can become so invested in their patient, my child. To come to work when your fragile heart is at risk of breaking with every patient loss, it’s not for the faint of heart, and everyone needs to take long breaks if they want to continue in that field. I am so glad you have taken a break. What an enormous blessing you sharing your life and thoughts and feelings with us is. Thank you ❤

My big sister is an RN, my niece is an RN, and my little sister is an LPN, on her way to being an RN as well... and I just wanted to say, so much love & respect for our nurses yall... You're literally taking on the mental and physical traumas of others, almost as if they were their own..
My big sister bought an RV when Covid was hitting super hard. I think she purchased her RV in late 2020, early 2021, and began working as a travel nurse.. She's been an RN for close to 20 years now. She's 5' even and very petite. I'll never forget about 15 years ago, this huge man was having a heart attack or something and fell, literally fell, down, onto my little, big sissy, Brigette.. It hurt her back and sprained her wrist as well, but if that wouldn't have ever happened, she wouldn't have found out about a blood clot that was in her leg that was potentially dangerous.. and here's a funny one.. lol.. my niece that's an RN, when she first started out as a CNA, she was working at a nursing home, and for the very first time, she walked into the room where the CNA's bathe their patients, and the very first thing the naked, elderly man said to her was... "Hey, Whack Me Off!!" LMFAO. She said she remained silent, turned around, walked out of the 'bathing area', or whatever it's called... lmao!!
    Love you, Nurse Johnn!
And thank you for your service!

Thank so so much for this episode! It was just what I needed tonight after my shift. I love hearing about nursing stories that are meaningful and connecting. I smiled, I cried, I felt not alone in my experiences. I am also a really empathetic nurse type, it can be really draining but that same trait also brings meaning to my career when I get to be there for special patients. ❤

About asking for help topic..... I heard some wise words recently : every creature when coming to this world is born with a set of abilities that help them survive. Giraffes, horses, etc. Can run within an hour after they were born. Turtules, spider, etc can run and hide straight after they are hatched. When babies are born they cry and we feel we need to help. So asking for help is our natural surviving instinct. Keep that thought and let it sit.
Nurse John, as a carer for eldery residents I can relate to so many of your interaction 🤭🤭🤭 and you were asking why they see children, i think they see themselfs as children (term of your inner child comes to my mind) or somebody from childchood (thats why sometimes they see moms as well). I know its very creepy 🤭 but i had so many lovely night conversations about patient childchood and they really light up when they can talk about that part of life.
Love your podcast, stay hydrated 🥤, medicated💊🩹 and caffeinated ☕ 💖

I’m sorry you lost your patient but that is the most important thing you can do with your patients - getting to know them while taking care of them. I can’t imagine being in the hospital due to sickness or anything like that. You being there to support them physically and emotionally is the best thing ever and I pray that you never lose that about you in your career. You’re awesome Johnn!!🎉❤

Never apologise or be embarrassed for showing your emotions it's natural.

Once I had a patient that needed arterial blood test every day. His wife used to be next to him. The day I took care of him the wife said "Wait a moment. I'm going to pray so you're going to get it at the first intend". Guess what. I let her do it and it was successful. They both told me that she had done the same with my colleagues and they all were successful at the first intend.

This is small but I have a little story: in 2015 I was living a few hours away from my family, I was very stressed with school and work and they were worried for me. We scheduled for them to come visit me and that day I woke up with a horrible stomach ache, which I got when they were on their way. They came anyways and when they got there we decided for them to take me to the Emergency Room, and it turns out I had appendicitis and needed my appendix removed. I know I wouldn’t have gone to the hospital if they were not there to convince me and take me.
Earlier this year my sister was staying overnight with my parents during a hard personal time (she lived about 5 hours away). The same situation happened and she ended up getting her gallbladder out that night.
It’s amazing that we happened to be with our family to take care of us during those times! Living on our own we probably would have downplayed it and not gone, who knows what would have happened?

My grandma was declining quickly and not lucid anymore but she held on and waited until my mom and her two sisters all made it to her nursing home - coming from all over the country. Once they were all there they all spoke to her to let her know they were all there and they loved her and that she can go and rest. She passed that night peacefully in her sleep.

My longtime beau was stricken by a series of strokes. He was sent 250 miles away because there were no beds locally for him. His grown children saw him while I watched his grandson. A miscommunication happened and I thought he had passed when they took him off the ventilator. Then I got word he was still here, breathing on his own, and I knew, he was waiting for me. I stayed with him to his last breath as I held and kissed him. That was four days after they took him off the ventilator. The strokes had severely damaged his cortex, and he was functioning solely on his brain stem only. For those three days I sang, spoke, and begged him to let go and that I'd be ok. The nurse asked how I was. I told her his dying was kind of like making love... I took his breath away and he mended my breaking heart. I know he's intervened in my life, like when I rolled my truck three times, landed upright, and walked away from the wreckage. I had a pill bottle of his ashes in my vest pocket. He always teased me how I had to have a crew of guardian Angels watching over me as evidenced in my other entry. One of the things I said to him when he was dying was "You need to go, so you can give my guardian Angels something you never gave yourself...a vacation!".

Hi John I love your videos and stories.
My miracle story is animal related.
I had just come home from work one night and as I walking to my condo I heard this loud meow. I looked around in the bushes and I couldn’t find a cat. Then I looked up and I saw a kitten stuck in a 12 foot tall tree. I called the kitty and she wouldn’t come down. Then I got my neighbor to try and help me out and the two of us could not get the baby down. After a 1/2 hour of trying we were joined by 4 other people and the person who lived in the apartment next to the top of the tree. We tried until 11:00pm and couldn’t get her down. We called the home owners association and the fire department and no one could help.
The next day while I was gone my neighbor recruited one of the people who lives near the tree and her cousin happened to visiting and he climbed all up the tree and got her down!
I took her home and named her Charlotte she’s 8 months old and she’s so sweet and loves my other cat Lucas even though he’s three times her size.

As a cancer patient, I hate doctors who have no compassion and not even trying their best to help patients and expects patients to look for their treatment without any assistance from their own health team . This is when I would like to say” I begged your pardon😂” This doctor just scratched his head and said he doesn’t know what to do and told me to fo get treatment in a different state😂what was worse is after not seeing him for more than a month, he ordered home health/ hospice for me. I still walk without aid and don’t use any oxygen so this is really rubbing it on my wounded heart. It made me extremely depressed and suicidal and lose hope . I felt no one was wanted to help me find treatment. Luckily by chance I came across this doctor who is so positive. Even if I don’t survive cancer, I’m still grateful to the doctors I have right now who gave me respect but most of all compassion.I’m not asking for a miracle but just kindness cause cancer really sucks.
