My lawn has a super high water table. Essentially it takes a long time for the yard to dry out and not feel so squishy on your feet. My soil appears to have a lot of clay. Last year i had a fence put up and it took until the 4th of july to drive posts because of how wet it is, i live in northern Michigan my dogs have really tore my yard up since i put in the fence. Do you think it would be best for me to do a lawn renovation in the spring since i could be able to use all that moisture to my advantage? And i was hoping thickening my lawn would help dry it before summer. Any of your input would help thanks.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Omar Zakai instablaster ;)
@Xzavier Dean thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Xzavier Dean it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my account :D

The hour you spent on the intro was definitely worth it! Nice video!

Agree, that intro music led into the rest of the video nicely. You are getting slick Ryan.👍👍
Practice, practice, practice!
Aww yeeaaahhhh!!! 🎵It's the most wonderful time of the year 🎵
Yes it is!
I’m most excited that you have a MN lawn too! I will be following your advice very soon!
Great intro for us northern lawn guys. Haven’t seen a rake on UA-cam yet well done Ryan. I hand rake all my lawns, seems like I’m the only one
Sometimes those old school tools are the best way to get it done!
Have you ever considered making a PDF of a lawn care guide that lays out step-by-step of when to aerate, dethatch, fertilize, overseed, etc.? I would love a guide to use with my new lawn to give me an idea of when to be doing everything!
I'm working on something like that right now.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care awesome, can’t wait!!
For now if you follow along with what I do during the season or have done in past year's videos then you'll get a great plan there as well. Hope I can help out!
Thanks for all the tips Ryan! I have definitely learned a lot watching your videos! It is also nice watching someone nearby who explains everything so that the average homeowner can understand it!
Glad to help!
That intro music was awesome with headphones! Also the lawn stuff... and also the music.
Thanks for the headphones idea 🙄
Perfect timing I’m doin my soil savvy test tomorrow
Thanks Ryan. Your videos are always a wealth of information. I have learned so much from you.
Glad to hear it!
Just bought a house from the courts, the yard was really nice 10 years ago. But the last owner did nothing and I had weeds sticking out of 2 feet of snow. The snow is gone but frost is still in the ground, presently I'm raking and removing as dead grass weeds and leaves. I will then round up and redress and then reseed. Would like to reseed by the 2nd week in April as we seem to get a couple of weeds of rain then. Enjoy your channel.
Thanks and good luck!
It’s on like donkey Kong for this weekend and yard work ! Makes me feel good!
Oh yeah!
really digging that new intro 🤙the weather is finally warming up in central Washington, we peaked at 61° today and looking at a low of 29°. I'm hoping to be getting out there and starting my season by early April 🤞
Sounds very similar to what we should have for weather very soon!
I live in eastern Washington. It was a nice week of warm weather finally. I was shoveling snow out of my front yard the last couple days to help expedite the melt..lol my wife thinks I'm crazy..
@@jakestoe oh don't worry...I did the same thing. 😁
Most of my snow melted about a month ago and lawn looked green and great. Then we have had freezing temps but hardly any snow. Now my lawn is brown like everyone else’s.....☹️. Hopefully spring arrives soon
That up and down of spring can be a pain. Warm temps should be around the corner
i took the leaf blower to the lawn today- definitely got it standing up/airing out. blew all the gravel out too from the county spreading salt/etc. i put grub control down twice last year and some mole/vole deterrent just before the first snow ( it melted and soaked the deterrent into the soil) no damage this year! my neighbors weren’t so lucky- some with extensive damage
Interesting...what did you use to keep them away?
product is called molemax
i use bayer season long grub control in late spring too
Great video!
I started to put down Pre emergent today; found out my house is dry rotted. Off to the store I go.
Fun Fun!
Still have snow cover here but it was 48 when I got home from work so I washed the car, lol! Good to get out!
Those first few days when you can finally get outside again are amazing!
Cheers for the video bloke, mow on!
Man you hit everything I'm either doing or thinking about in this video. Great video as always!
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing.
"Your neighbors are going to think you're weird, dont worry about that" true words! Am I in over my head doing 12,000 sq ft with a 4 gallon manual pump sprayer for pre emergent app?
You just might be...unless you're pretty practiced at keeping a consistent flow it will be tough
Ryan! Love that you're putting out this content now, getting me amped up for the upcoming season!
It's nice being able to finally get out of the house again!

man, all that work you did on the side and front really shows before the season even starts.

Thanks!
Another great video and impressed by the growth of the channel. Looking forward to seeing what 2019 brings to lawn care community.
Thanks! I am excited for 2019 as well.
Getting closer to be snow free, still melting here but our soil is heavily saturated from the rapid 48 hour melt of 2+ feet of snow followed by that bomb cyclone which unloaded a lot of rain followed by a blizzard that flooded a lot of the state. Thanks for the content Ryan!
That flooding over there is insane! I hope all is ok
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care we are personally OK but towns immediately near us are repairing or still under at least a foot of water. My in-laws had cedar tree snap in half and punch holes in the roof and siding but we used some of my arborist bull rope and pulleys to safely lift it off any away from the house without doing anymore damage. Lots of small towns not making news that went under in Nebraska but this state is pulling together and helping one another. Lots of great people coming from all over and helping with rescues along with the National Guard and State Patrol.
Can’t wait to see more videos soon! 👍
Great vid. Always appreciate the video skills. Snow is gone here in central Ohio as well and I'm probably a couple weeks out before pre emergent. Interesting look at the vole damage. It will grow in but my experience is they do not leave. Their tracks are just harder to see among the lush green, but when you look close they are still there. Last year, i took out about 20 of those buggers and it was still a stalemate.
Usually they disappear here after the winter. Maybe our terriers are enough to scare them..haha
great stuff, man! Always love your b-roll and diversity of shots. Great content too. Happy spring. We have still 2 feet of snow here.
Sometimes it's hard being a one man band, but I do my best! Bummer on the snow.
Killer intro man, and an overall fantastic vid sir!
Thanks!
Good general overview strategy…
This got me excited for spring and to mow! I can't wait to be outside again. Thanks for the video Ryan. ✌ from Omaha
It's going to be awesome!
@@ryanknorrlawncare I just came in from raking though the crud in the lawn. Ugh what a mess! I had a TON of rabbit poo in several little piles all over my lawn this year.
I also realized I should have mowed one more time before hanging things up last fall. Most of my lawn is laid over.
I'm trying hard to talk my wife into letting me get a Timemaster 🤔🙄😂😉
Pretty comprehensive video, thanks for sharing your go about. I can't wait to start this season. I'm coming up with a 1 year and a 5 year strategy and all your info, and some others will be used.
Glad to help!
Hey, if you guys have smaller lawns and need less then 5lbs of prodiamine, there are 8oz packs available on ebay.
I've got just over 1000sqft and would of never been able to use 5lbs with prodiamine within its 2yr expiration.
Great info!
I sent my sample to Spectrum Analytics last year. I did the basic test. Forgot how much it cost. Sent my soil sample to Clemson this year for $6
Looking good Ryan! You guys have a couple weeks on us here in Massachusetts.
I hope to be mowing very soon!
Dope Video! Sending blessing your way, Keep inspiring!🎒🙌🏻
I think I missed the boat with pre-emergent down here in my Arizona backyard. It’s already in the 80s.
Well it just depends on the condition of your lawn (you may be fine without it) and you can spray after the fact if you start to find issues.
Another solid vid and tips from you Ryan! ❤️
That was a random spot for voles, and they usually avoid yards with bigger animals like dogs. Unlucky. They are bad in my neighborhood we, have fields all the way around us.
Thanks! It is a bit random in my yard but they come from the creek bank area it appears.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care I forgot about that area and that correlates with where your seeing them. Pesky little buggers!
Great stuff Ryan, thank you much!
Nice to see you ready for Spring again!!! Lets make our yards 'dominate!'
I'm ready!
Nice edit on that intro! 👍🏼
I spent a little too much time on it but I like the way it turned out

Great video Ryan! That opening is 💯
Good stuff Ryan
Are you in the Midwest? I’m in Michigan and I’m lost on how to care for my grass😢😢😢
For those that power rake to clear out mess that is in the lawn and open up soil for better water and nutrient intake, how do you time power raking and pre-emergent? Soil temps last 5 days is at 53 degrees but my lawn is not ready for power rake. Many spots are still getting over the winter frost and if I power rake now even at lowest setting, it'll definitely rip grass out. So what do I do? I use a Dimension liquid pre emergent.
No need to rake anything heavily unless you have a thatch problem. I don't do any early spring raking other than by hand if needed
Didn't realize your area was so much colder. Funny the reasons we will give ourselves to get out side the tail end of winter. "Why are you checking the soil temp babe? It's 40 degrees outside!"
40 degrees is sit on the patio grilling weather!
I bought a cheap thermometer, I brought it in, and it read about 1 degree under what the thermostat said. I went 4” into the lawn,in different spots, and it read 43 to 45. Yet, when I looked at the weather channel soil temps, it said it was about 36. So...hmmm. I am in Chicago.
The greencast tool is showing 46 for Chicago so I'm pretty sure your thermometer is accurate. www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature
my neighbors would be worried something happened to me if I wasn't out there checking out my lawn.
You have to commit!!
Raking yields a ton of dead grass- am I right in assuming this would be a terrible idea. (Bad for my lawn)
Green works dethatcher on a high raised setting to clean out the dead grass and promote circulation? Then mow it up. Thanks Ryan!
I think I am going to dethatch mine soon. I’ve mowed and pulled a lot of dead grass. Gotta get the ground breathing ASAP
CallMeFrog 76 mine is pretty matted down so it seemed like a good idea but not sure of the dethatcher will do more damage to new growth. I’m being lazy and trying not to take my entire lawn. 🤷🏻♂️
The dead stuff from winter should shed off but if you have an actual thatch problem, that's a different story. Try it on a high setting and see what you think.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care no thatch issue, but the matted laid over lawn worries me. I’ll try the back yard first. 😜
We are still skiing up in Minnesota. Don't plan on going out for another month.
Yikes!
Its that time again!!!!
Should you get a yard roller to flatten down the humps in the yard caused by Voles?
Great Video!
So I know everybody talks about the 55° but does it matter the night temperatures?
Dude! That sand ain't nothing! 🙄😁🙃 I've got a full inch of sand in places and the plows throw it a good 6-8 feet onto the lawn. I have to do a heavy raking or rent a power broom -- either one is stressful on the lawn. After that I'll water heavily to get out as much as possible.
Great video, though - just had to bust your chops a little 😁 Keep up the great work, Ryan!
--JD
Maybe you can use that sand for leveling... :)
What a horrible rainy 2018. First time i ever couldnt rake my lawn. My grass easily ripped out the ground. Roots were only an inch long at best in some areas. Some of the grass was above ground from ground freezing and lifting. Very strange and disheartening since I tried my best last year. I dont think the ground ever dried out the entire summer here in Nj
It was a tough year for rainfall in many places. Hopefully things improve this year!
Try not to get discouraged. We had an unusually wet year, hopefully things will return to normal this growing season.
Is there a optimal time to take a soil sample? Spring, Summer or fall? I’m in Minnesota
Love the new intro
Thanks!
Your yard already looks better than the neighbors. Lawn gains! I assume these tips could be used in warm season lawns as well? (minus the snow part)
Warm season is a little bit different but in general the temps for applying pre-emergent is the same and most of the other stuff applies. The main difference between cool and warm is that it warm needs the fertilizer in the summer where it's opposite for cool season.
never thought of it that way. Great info! I'm in coastal SC. Just trying to make sure I wake my lawn up properly. Thanks again, Ryan
DUDE....HOW CAN I GET THAT BEAT AT THE END OF THIS VIDEO ?? ...🔥🔥🔥
Aussie first 😁Don’t worry about the neighbours,I just finished mulch mowing for the second time this week and the looks I get. Who cares.😁👍👍
First thing, why should anyone ever care about neighbours while walking in their yard whenever the heck they want 😅
Great video! Thanks
New subscriber here😊
What are your thoughts on 2-4-D ?
Love your videos, Ryan! Do you have any tips to repair, or more ideally, prevent dog urine from creating spots everywhere?? We just hydro seeded our lawn (new build) last May, and I'm really looking to get it in shape this season as it's pretty spotty and I've got some moss in spots too.
Video coming out soon on that
@@ryanknorrlawncare I also am looking to prevent/repair dog damage from urine or places a dog digs at grass briefly in the spring.
Thank you!
Hi Ryan, thanks again for all of the time and effort you put into your videos. They’ve really taught me a lot over the past year. This last fall I moved into a new house and did an entire lawn reno planting new seed. It came up well. I live in Delaware and have tall fescue in my lawn. This spring I started the cleanup process by taking and cleaning up debris. I do notice some weeds coming up from the winter. I’d like to spot spray those weeds, and also fertilize early and late sprint. I’d also like to overseed as well but am contemplating that. Do you have a suggested action plan I should use? I mainly want to spot spray those existing weeds, and then fertilize with a preemergent in it. Thanks!
I would do just as you mentioned. Get down some pre-emergent and fertilizer and then spot spray those weeds once they are actively growing and temps warm a bit. The weed killer is usually a little more effective when temps warm a bit.
Where do you get a soil test
Would you suggest using a power rake blade for a push mower to remove any dead grass in the spring? Thanks
Shouldn't really need to do anything drastic. Just a light rake
You keep talking about "pre-emergent", but at the same time you say "don't put too much nitrogen". When I look at pre-emergent, they usually have really high nitrogen, something like 30-0-5... Or it's OK before grass "awakened"?
Pre-emergent can be purchased by itself. That's why those bags with high nitrogen would not be something I would use or recommend. More info here - ua-cam.com/video/KVazsDWS6nQ/v-deo.html
Would it be a good idea to dethatch in the very early spring to get rid of all the dead grass from the cold months? I’ve mowed and bagged twice and A LOT of brown dead stuff is still coming up. No temps lower than 40* in the foreseeable future
in New York - i'm wondering when or how soon can I over seed my existing lawn, i might even topcoat the seeds with soil, peat etc, - and if I see now how soon before I can walk on it, mow it, meaning how soon can I begin my lawn maintenance. Dont want to damage new growth. thanks
You will need to look at your temps and see when the threat of frost or more like temps in the 20s will be gone. You don't want the seed to start coming up and then get a hard freeze. From there it will depend on what seed you use but it will be weeks before you can start regular maintenance.
Not sure if this is because I'm in Canada, but when I look for Pre-Emergents, all I find are Scotts Turf Builder. All the ones listed above are shown as not available. Any suggestions? My lawn is plagued by Dandelions and crabgrass
It's not available in Canada, unfortunately
What about aerating? Isn’t this time for that also in the north west we have moss i think it’s time for moss killer/lime so that we can seed if needed?.?.
Usually that is done in Fall, but if you didn't, spring is fine if it's needed
What are your thoughts on Scott’s 4 Step program?
I would prefer something else but my father in law used it for years (maybe still does?) and results were good.
My main problem is I still have snow melting, so my damn hard is a waterlogged, by the time it melts, its already 50-60s out
Not fun
@@ryanknorrlawncare by the time I can fertilize it's already growing season and cutting season. Am at the point where am just doing damage control.
I'm having a severe weed problem since my grass is completely new sod, (I already put starter fert on it), I have dogs that use the yard, Does anyone have any suggestions to get rid of weeds that is safe for dogs, besides pulling them on 1 by 1??
You still rocking this blower? I have it and it works great but I’m really wanting a backpack blower.
Yep still have it
awesome info Ryan! I was looking at your pre emergent video and was wondering if you had any thoughts on using Tenacity?
I want to put out some new grass seed and use a pre emergent at the same time. Tenacity is the only thing I've found that can do this. any extra info would be appreciated.
Yep only thing you can use along side seeding but it doesn't last months like the other products
Is there a book you can recommend for a homeowner looking to have a tenth of the knowledge you have one day?
I'll hope to have a guide out in the future
Will a pre-emergent still work in areas I punched holes in the lawn with a soil probe?
Nice video! Drone shots are awesome! What do you have? Drone wise....
Thanks! Phantom 4 Pro
Have you found which universities in MN that does soul test?
I have a question for you. I bought my first house this last winter in MN and the previous owners did not rake/remove any leaves at all so the whole yard is basically a blanket of leaves. What would your suggestion be to remove that leaf layer without hurting my lawn? I have a mulching lawn mower with a bagging attachment could I use that to pickup the leaves this time of year? Thank you for your videos!
You have to rake it first then mulch it
I’m going be raking up leaves this week since temperatures are starting to rise here in NJ. I have some areas that are really bad and need seeding I feel, I’ve read it’s bad idea to seed now and I should in fall, how true is this? If so you think I should just fertilize and hope for best?
This should help - ua-cam.com/video/c1Mlv5vwx4A/v-deo.html
Where are the trees? Looks barren.
Is it possible to use a instant read thermometer, like you would use for food, to measure soil temps?
Yep that's what I use
