Bro do you know what I can use for weed control/killer that won’t hurt pets and kids? We don’t use herbicide because we have kids and I take the weeds off by hand and my bike is killing me! Lol thanks!
One of the best decisions I made was to get rid of careless lawn man. Repeatedly told him he was cutting my fescue too low, and had a lot of bare spots. He told me grass would not grow in shaded areas. Once I raised mower to 3 inches and consistent mowing, grass filled in, and lawn looked better than ever. I wasted a ton of money paying lawn man that was stubborn and cut everyones grass same level regardless of type of grass. Some of these lawn services are just about quantity and how fast they can mow your lawn and get paid. There is no lawn care, just lawn mowing.
I refuse to pay lawn service companies a dime for these exact reasons. Carelessness is something I can’t pay someone for haha My neighbor across the street use one of these local lawn care companies and they were looking at my lawn in awe of how much better and healthier my lawn is compared to the crap job they are doing over there.
i have a cool season lawn, Kentucky blue mix just the cheap constractor sod, so does everyone else in my entire neighborhood. A question i wondered about related to this is that people in my neighborhood who have the absolute best looking greenest thickest lawns are always cut the shortest. The lawns that look patchy are ones that grow out more. Any reason why this would be?
@@Brett_NebraskaThere are quite a few factors that may be in play here. One might be irrigation. How often, what time of day, and how much do your neighbors with enviable lawns waste? What is their soil structure like compared to others? Have they added topsoil and organic compost to there lawn each Spring for many years? Do they test their soil and match their soil with the comparable organic fertilizers? Using those same tests, do they also add any micronutrients the grass needs to really thrive? Do they aerate their lawn once or twice a year? Do they utilize verticutting and power raking? Your neighbors with spectacular lawns could probably reel mow their lawns to putting green height (adjusting irrigation of course) because they schedule and do these things and more.
Your comment regarding frequency is spot on. I only mow once a week but my buddy mows twice a week. We do pretty much the same maintenance but his lawn is greener and fuller than mine. I just don’t have the time.
I never thought I would care about grass this much until I got my first home…the last owner really didn’t do anything to the yard and just used it as a area for the dogs to crap in…my husband and I would love to get the grass nice looking again. I had nooo clue there were so many types of grass…I’m learning so much
I started mowing my lawn every 4 days instead of once a week. What a HUGE difference in the look and health of the lawn. My neighbors think im crazy but it’s also good exercise. Plus, by mowing twice a week, the mower doesn’t bog down and leave clumps of grass all over. I’m able to move faster and it’s effortless. I have a large yard and a push mower so the ease is appreciated. I see the landscapers on my block checking out the lawn when they come by. Haha
Back in the day I used to look up bikini videos but……I’m a father now……things have changed. Glad to be here and I’m going to keep watching for helpful tips
Honestly this is almost exactly what I've been doing. We've been in our house for 3 years and I've taken over from the retired guy across the street for the nicest lawn. I got a dethatcher for this year so we'll see how it turns out but I think it will do well. It hasn't been fertilized since at least the 90's where it was turned into a rental.
I live in the mountains of New Mexico, and we didn't have a lawn at our prior house. We moved into a new house, had one summer, and my husband had the lawn looking great. Unfortunately, he passed away from cancer treatment complications that winter, and I had no idea what I was doing last summer with the lawn. The snow finally melted (we are at 7,500 feet) and the lawn is not looking great this spring. (Plus, we have a Weimaraner puppy who has created a bunch of burn spots in the back. And, she came back inside the house with several pieces of the irrigation system she dug out. So, I have a lot of repair work to do.) Thanks for all the info.
Thanks again Ryan. I did everything you said last year and my lawn looks awesome. Today, I had 3 people ask me how I have my lawn such a deep green..... I love it.. lots of work to do my resonation last year but your methods and products work great! Thanks again!

My issue here I just bought my first home last June and this year I started taking care of it. I did ortho spray for the weeds two applications because on Wisconsin it’s been raining a ton. Wow, I started watching you maybe four years ago and I’ve learned a lot from you. I know you have a lot of projects going on, I really see this video as you getting back to the basics. For me my lawn has never looked better and has never been healthier than it is now. I have to thank you for that but I also have a lot of people that I watch in different videos that have helped me. I really like the way you made it about the basics, I feel like as a homeowner we all have very little time to spend on the lawn but we want the most impact of our time.As I watch this video I see the things that I need to focus on which is the basic sort of a kiss approach(keep it simple s\]ped:). I get approached all the time at work because my friends and coworkers know I’m very passionate about my lawncare so they ask me what they should do. I always go back to what I’ve been shown in time is to know your lawn, keep it at the 1/3 rule, feed the lawn when it needs it but focus on the soil first. I think this video is some of your best work I really appreciate the content , I hope to see more of this. I have the best lawn in town since I started following you THKS Had the worst , we moved here to rural Manitoba and the lawn was a disaster, last yr got the back amazing, and the front increased. This spring the front has doubled in thickness
I'm constantly reminded of the fact that I've got a mixture of bermuda and tall fescue, and how impossible it is to get them both happy. But, with a mix of sunny and shaded areas, it's been the only way I've been able to achieve coverage in both areas.
Ah! Grubs! I’m in the cool temperature zone and I had a spectacular lawn but right around the fall I noticed bare spots with a kind of sponge like feel, lifting up like a carpet. Yes I had grubs so now I will be treating it for it right before the hot summer season kicks off and going to try to do a little seeding before the hot summer so don’t forget to treat your lawn for ten- highly recommend it.
Great summary. You’re right. It doesn’t happen overnight, but i think you can get 80% of the way there by winter and your lawn just keeps looking better along the way. Semi-instant gratification. :)
When you use the herbicides to kill the weeds, dandelion / broadleaf, do you have to go back and pull the weeds? I have around 10k sqft and I never bag, only mulch. Thanks in advance
Great video. One question I have is should you leave dead weeds/crabgrass after post-emergent (tenacity) treatment or should you pull up those dead weeds/crabgrass prior to aeration/overseeding (specifically in the fall)?
Transition zone truth - Yes, you can grow either cool season or warm season turfs, which is great. But on the flip side, neither will thrive as well as they would so you have that struggle as well. I'm just north of Richmond, VA and my first hard frost is about the 3rd week of October, and the green fades to tan around the end of November. Come March, if I've mowed down to 1" anyway, the lawn is greening up by the middle of March. I like Zoysia because where cool season grasses are struggling in the middle of the summer heat, my Zoysia is thriving well. Most people entertain outdoors in the summer, so that's when warm season turfs grow best, so that's part of the reason I chose Zoysia, while my neighbors are entertaining people in a mix of dormant and stressed cool season lawns, even the well kept and striped fescue lawns.
Me and my gf just got a house and don’t have our own mower yet it’s crazy how expensive even just push mowers are I wish I could mow it like I want to make our little property look nice
Great video and this is actually hysterical. I started watching UA-cam pretty much when it first came out and back then I remember watching someone with the last name Knorr perform covers and some original songs. One of the first UA-cam channels I ever watched in the very very early days of UA-cam. All these years later I now have my house and was looking at lawn care videos and yours came up and the name seemed familiar. And sure enough after a little digging looks like I've come full circle and on one of your channels just shy of 16 years later? Funny how that works LOL
Question here: I’m a highschool student and I have a lawn care business. I have around 15 clients around my neighborhood and average property is half an acre. So what lawnmower would you recommend to get? I have an old Honda model but want something more powerful. Do you think a time machine is worth it?
Youre killin it kid keep it up you'll be making 6 figures when you graduate hs. If i was in your position and had the money id buy a wright stander or timemaster
Definitely snag a used or new Toro zero turn time cutter. 42 inch would be a good size for those lots in terms. Keep your Honda for the areas you can't fit the ZT. If you get a dump cart for your ZT, you can tow the push mower and trimmer/blower around your neighborhood too.
I had a terrible lawn, it’s still bad but looking a lot better. I have a mixture of native grasses, weeds and different types of Bermuda and mow every 4 days at the lowest setting. The Bermuda is starting to take over because the rest of the weeds and grasses have a hard time surviving being cut that low constantly.
I have a tall fescue and kbb blend lawn in california and I’m having quite a bit of problems with fox tails in my lawn…any suggestions on what to use to get rid of them?
I have a 2 year old lawn but it's extremely bumpy and seems like a half ass job. Is it too early to look into laying some soil/sand to even out and overseed? Im mainly looking to get to a point where it is somewhat level and I can start something like this video explains. Any info is appreciated.
I also noticed you're sharpening with a grinder. Using a flapper/sandpaper wheel will give you a better edge without being really aggressive with the removal of the metal. The softer pad makes it easier to sharpen, and the blades last longer. I mow Zoysia which is very dense, so I have two sets of blades and I sharpen then at the same time, than mow the Zoysia up front with the sharp blade, then move to the back that I still need to renovate. Then I may or may not replace the blades for the next mowing. If I'm mowing at 1.5 inches, I'll swap each time. If I'm mowing at 2 inches, I may mow a 2nd time before sharpening. I was going to start a sharpening business for mainly beauty shears and I was in the process of talking to manufacturers when COVID hit and kind of ruined those plans, and I've been sharpening for 46 years now, using both grinders and flapper pads, and I really prefer the sandpaper discs. I sharpen the main side fairly close to 30 degrees, then make one gentle pass on the back to remove the burr. My goal isn't razor sharp, but I could easily cut steaks at that point. However, people think of a mower blade as a blunt tool, almost. It's sharped to a 30 degree bevel on one side, and flat on the other. Most kitchen knives are 15-17 degrees on each side (depending on blade hardness and type of steel - VG-10 is a good all around metal for kitchen blades), so although thinner, it's about the same bevel angle as a mower blade, just with less beefy blade backing it up. As often as I change blades, I use one of those one size fits all sockets that have the push pins in the middle. It cannot stand up to the torque required to break the bolt free...I broke my first one trying, but once you break the bold loose, that in a battery powered drill make it really quick to remove the bolts and replace them after. What works well for one may not work well for another, so try it and see how it goes. Now if I could just get my wife to stop cutting meat using my very fine edged Sashimi knife while on a plate instead of a cutting board...(sigh). I'm constantly sharpening that blade. As far as soil temps, I aim for 45-50 degrees. I'd rather be early and safe than have some silly issue and end up applying too late. The microbes are so dormant at those temperatures that it really doesn't negatively impact the pre-emergent duration, especially with prodiamine sitting so high in the soil. That Spectracide is great for newbies, but Q4 is a more cost effective version of the same herbicide mix. Speedzone is better overall in my opinion for general wide coverage. You could have expanded on the Crabgrass control. Crabgrass dies off at the first hard frost, so it's not worth spending the money late in the season to kill crabgrass. Just do a good pre-emergent plant and get ahead of it for next year.
Will Aerating my lawn help with getting the lawn to come back? My lawn has looked very ugly since we had construction done. I want to rent an aerator to deal with the compactness of the lawn and also overseed to bring it back. I live outside of Boston MA.
I have tons of tire rut and now it’s just mud and grass in those spots are gone. Do I just smooth it out and add top soil until it’s leveled with the grass and seed it? It’s tall fescue in the south.
Ryan, what should I do if I have a dog, im worried about the chemicals doing harm to him but my back yard is starting to look bad because of the lack of care
Look on the lawn care package. I also have a dog. What I've seen is that straight up fertilizers are ok. Insect control lawn care have big issues. And some are in between, like emergent products. I am far from any type of expert, that's why I'm here. Your results may vary. In short, check the product bag. They'll tell you.
Just getting into this nice lawn hobby. I live in central Indiana. What do y'all recommend for weed control? I have an acre and a half of completely untouched grass.
I started becoming slowly more and more excited as this video went on, and I'm not sure when I put on a polo, cargo shorts, and new balance shorts but I've just realized I achieved my final form and I'm now a dad. Now just to have a child or something...
Hi. I live in Dallas, Texas and my parent's lawn hasn't had real grass for the past 20 yrs now. Their lawn has been covered with various 8 different types of weeds covering their entire lawn. Their sprinkler system pipes are broken too, so I tried to irrigate it with a 360° hose spray irrigation every night. My mom wants thick grass, on her lawn (I don't know what is the name of the thick grass that can tolerate drought soil lawn) so I'm trying to help them renovate their ugly lawn to look like a healthy beautiful lawn in the neighborhood in this 105°F, humidity of 80% 🥵 weather. All my neighbors have a beautiful lawn. My parent's lawns have been ugly for the past 30 yrs. 🥶😱😳🥺😰😭 I care for my dad that suffers from Alzheimer's and cancer. My dad used to do all the lawn work and outdoor handyman housework. Now I'm doing his work, but trying to learn some basics on UA-cam of how to care for my parent's lawn in the right way in the early morning. 🤭 I can't afford all the lawn care machines shown in your videos. What are the best budget machines or tools you could recommend to remove bad weed grass, before putting/laying fertilizers in?!
Love all of your stuff! Really looking to put it into practice this spring and transform my lawn. Question though, do you have any specific plans/products that are pet safe?
I don't have crabgrass, but I do seem to have a ton of poa annua and annual ryegrass and other grassy weeds. I have patches of grass that is nice, like bluegrass and tall fescue, but how should I tackle the annual bluegrass/ryegrass?
Just started watching your videos love them lots of great information. I live In north east pa and just bought a new house i would like to know if it is a good time to put down a weed killer mower should i wait till spring my grass is full of weeds and we just came off a few weeks of 85 to 95 degrees little rain i bought some trimec with crabgrass control to put down what's your thoughts on this?
I need help! I just bought a used home and the backyard has grass established it’s bad but I don’t want to rip it out. It’s very bumpy and needs some help. Should I level the lawn first then overseed?
Hi Ryan! I very much appreciate your channel and am eager to watch all of your videos! I do have a question--do you have any advice or a video addressing how to care for Xenon Zoysia? Our grass in the South came out of dormancy about a month and a half ago and we already have brown areas, since it's been an unusually hot spring. Is it true that watering while the sun is out acts as a magnifying glass and burns the blades? Thank you for any help!! Signed, wife caretaker
Great video :) I live in England and I have such a terrible turf which I need to take care of. I bought American grass seeds. I hope they can deal with rain.
I have a question; should we do the things you said in order? I mean in the video, you put mowing before herbicide care in order. So, does that mean we should mow before spraying herbicide care liquids? If yes, the grass was tall (before cut) while spraying weed b gon product in the video. Should we do each item you talked about, different times? or should we follow the order in the video from beginning to the end for lawn care. I am confused.
Man my dandelions are some hardy pigs last year I fully killed my back yard and seeded most of it has cam back from a crazy winter hear in eastern Washington state but all of my dandelions came back I am at a lose but good insight in this video
I did that "I will mow once every 6-8 weeks, in FLORIDA..... I killed most of my grass with the layer of dead grass. I got so inspired, I hired a landscaping company. LOL Looks awesome now.
Curious your take: If I have weeds like dandelion throughout my yard and I sprayed an herbicide, do I need to bag my clippings my next mow or should I mulch?
I don’t really know. Some says to mulch so that the chemical get back into the soil and possibly kill more weeds. Some says bag to get all of the weed seeds out. Up to you I guess
You should come down to Alabama and do a video on starter tips for neglected Bermuda for a new move in. I might even be willing to let you use my yard as the example. For video purposes obviously.
I have more weeds than grass - crab grass, clover, moss, you name it. I sprayed weed control couple of weeks ago and got most of it. I cut the grass short yesterday and put some seed down on the bold spots. Also eyeballed some Scotts Turf Builder lawn food fertilizer. A moderate rain felt a couple of hours later. I plan to apply a weed & feed (Scotts again) in a couple of weeks. Will try to cut it weekly to 3 inches. We'll see how it turns out - even a moderately thicker and fuller lawn will be great!
It sounds like you are doing everything you should be doing to have it come in nice, healthy, and thick this year. If it is kind of thin in areas, you may want to overseed now too and get that going. It'll help fill it in. Good luck, you're doing exactly what you should be it sounds like. 👍🏼
I live in Colorado. I have mostly sand soil. I have sprayed weed killer several times, top soil and seed. nothing grows but weeds. should I just rototill it all under?

Would love a version of this video for us here in Canada (Ontario) that have much tighter restrictions on what we can put on our lawn.
When you use the herbicides to kill the weeds, dandelion / broadleaf, do you have to go back and pull the weeds? I have around 10k sqft and I never bag, only mulch. Thanks in advance
Don’t pull the weeds just add killer
I a new home owner this my first time dealing with lawn and grass but I star learning little by little but isn't a easy task to complete 🥵
American here, square drive is a God send. Torx is great for T25 and larger. Under that it’s very unstable and hate it.
I have cool season grass and have some weed issues should I be bagging or mulch/ side discharge?
Great video and this is actually hysterical.
I started watching UA-cam pretty much when it first came out and back then I remember watching someone with the last name Knorr perform covers and some original songs. One of the first UA-cam channels I ever watched in the very very early days of UA-cam.
All these years later I now have my house and was looking at lawn care videos and yours came up and the name seemed familiar. And sure enough after a little digging looks like I've come full circle and on one of your channels just shy of 16 years later? Funny how that works LOL
😄
Toro
Toro Timecutter (mine is going on 5 years old) or maybe a Scag or Ferris walk behind.
I do that same thing and I’m 14 I use the toro time master it’s great for me!
Bermuda can be magical for certain things 😄
TTTF in transition zone! Who is with me?
Bring on the brown patch
@@johnbaumann2126 please no, don't bring it
@@johnbaumann2126 Maybe. A lot of cultural things you can do to deter.
Are these steps you can do every year if you just want to maintain what you have? Also you use the seaweed and hulmic after applying the pre emergent?
Things should improve to where you don't need the spray weed control for the most part in the future
Following your advice since the fall my yard looks much better.
Hey Ryan
I pride myself on comprehensive videos, this video. Next level 🙏😁👌
What do you think of the fertilizer called the anderson I live in Illinois and what to try it
I have a tall fescue and kbb blend lawn in california and I’m having quite a bit of problems with fox tails in my lawn…any suggestions on what to use to get rid of them?
In what season should I start this process? I live in Kansas, in the transition zone.
Dude I love your videos. You are chill and direct. If you had any idea what I'm facing this spring,.....lol
I have a 2 year old lawn but it's extremely bumpy and seems like a half ass job. Is it too early to look into laying some soil/sand to even out and overseed? Im mainly looking to get to a point where it is somewhat level and I can start something like this video explains. Any info is appreciated.
If you're overseeding that will be fine
Great video. Very concise and informative!
Looking for some good post emergent options. I live in the Philadelphia Pennsylvania area.
After merhbacide treatment can I mow the lawn and water?
Will Aerating my lawn help with getting the lawn to come back? My lawn has looked very ugly since we had construction done. I want to rent an aerator to deal with the compactness of the lawn and also overseed to bring it back. I live outside of Boston MA.
how long after pre emergent do you apply weed control? and then how long can you use fertilizer?
Nice video! So informative.
Should I do weed control before I dethatch? Or wait after?
I have tons of tire rut and now it’s just mud and grass in those spots are gone. Do I just smooth it out and add top soil until it’s leveled with the grass and seed it? It’s tall fescue in the south.
That should work
Great video Ryan. I have cool season grass here in the north and was just wondering how low should I cut my lawn in late fall before winter?
When mowing is it best to bag clippings, discharge them, or mulch them?
I prefer discharge but many people mulch. Bagging is usually just for certain special cases
What is the best over the counter pre-emergent for crabgrass?
I stay in Belmont, nc..no irrigation, I have tall fescue, what lawn schedule or program due u recommend for my situation?
Can you apply the weed spray (the one you use hooked up to the hose) on top of the pre emergent/fertilizer?
I was wondering same thing. The fact he doesn’t mention anything makes me believe it’s not an issue.
imagine being your neighbor and that peer-pressure of lawn LOL
My neighbor is the reason I’m here 😂
Ryan, what should I do if I have a dog, im worried about the chemicals doing harm to him but my back yard is starting to look bad because of the lack of care
Use Organic fertilizer and water it in well.
Any suggestions to tackle Thistles? Will a generic weed killer spray work on them?
Any recommendations on getting rid of creeping Charlie. I’ve had it for years and can’t get rid of it
I fixed my ugly lawn this year with a baseball batting cage, and a lot of baseball hitting nets for my son.
Ugly lawn is now a thing of the past!
When do you dethatch for cold weather grass?
Just getting into this nice lawn hobby. I live in central Indiana. What do y'all recommend for weed control? I have an acre and a half of completely untouched grass.
I started becoming slowly more and more excited as this video went on, and I'm not sure when I put on a polo, cargo shorts, and new balance shorts but I've just realized I achieved my final form and I'm now a dad.
Now just to have a child or something...
No children needed 🤣
I can't afford all the lawn care machines shown in your videos. What are the best budget machines or tools you could recommend to remove bad weed grass, before putting/laying fertilizers in?!
Love all of your stuff! Really looking to put it into practice this spring and transform my lawn. Question though, do you have any specific plans/products that are pet safe?
If you can only take one product on your mower provided grass island. What do you take?
How does the plan change if you are starting in the fall and not the spring?
I don't have crabgrass, but I do seem to have a ton of poa annua and annual ryegrass and other grassy weeds. I have patches of grass that is nice, like bluegrass and tall fescue, but how should I tackle the annual bluegrass/ryegrass?
Can the full lawn weed control start in the fall if you missed spring? In the north zone.
Would it be better to do a pre emergent first then post emergent?
Back lawn is getting a full redo, due to new retainer walls. Hydro seed next week and prayers
What about dethatching and/or scarifying as well as aeration? Do you find these to be helpful when over-seeding?
Ryan you are the best!!
How do you like the toro timemaster?
How do I know what three inches is? Do I literally measure from the soil up to the tip of the grass?
Another insightful and informative piece
Keep up the great work Ryan
Great video :) I live in England and I have such a terrible turf which I need to take care of. I bought American grass seeds. I hope they can deal with rain.
Why did you buy American grass seeds?
Oh crud! I just put fertilizer and grub killer down before our rains this weekend. How long do I need to wait to try and do a soil test for my soil?
4-6 weeks would usually be the timeframe.
@@ryanknorrlawncare very good! Thanks Ryan! (Iowa born but living in Minnesota now :)
How far apart should you apply pre immergent vs fertilizer
I have a question; should we do the things you said in order? I mean in the video, you put mowing before herbicide care in order. So, does that mean we should mow before spraying herbicide care liquids? If yes, the grass was tall (before cut) while spraying weed b gon product in the video. Should we do each item you talked about, different times? or should we follow the order in the video from beginning to the end for lawn care. I am confused.
I live here in Southern California, can I do this now (April 2023)? because the weeds situation is out of control
Man my dandelions are some hardy pigs last year I fully killed my back yard and seeded most of it has cam back from a crazy winter hear in eastern Washington state but all of my dandelions came back I am at a lose but good insight in this video
Thanks for always giving us a wealth of information Mr. Knorr!
Does this process apply for a renovation starting in Fall? Or do I have to wait till spring comes around to take these recommendation?
I did that "I will mow once every 6-8 weeks, in FLORIDA..... I killed most of my grass with the layer of dead grass.
I got so inspired, I hired a landscaping company. LOL Looks awesome now.
Curious your take: If I have weeds like dandelion throughout my yard and I sprayed an herbicide, do I need to bag my clippings my next mow or should I mulch?
Bag next mow.
I don’t really know. Some says to mulch so that the chemical get back into the soil and possibly kill more weeds. Some says bag to get all of the weed seeds out. Up to you I guess
I always mulch. Hasnt hurt anything that I can see.
BAG
What do you think of automowers?
You should come down to Alabama and do a video on starter tips for neglected Bermuda for a new move in. I might even be willing to let you use my yard as the example. For video purposes obviously.
Same things really apply just a different time of year. Take care of the weeds, mow, irrigate and fertilize and let that Bermuda spread.
So how did it go? Looking better?
I live in Colorado. I have mostly sand soil. I have sprayed weed killer several times, top soil and seed. nothing grows but weeds. should I just rototill it all under?
What type of irrigation sprinkler is that at 12:28?
The links are listed in description
So how long with those hose extension weed sprayers? 2 seconds or so per area of grass? I saw you going up and down at about 2 seconds intervals.
Just enough to coat the leaves of the weeds
