- late great version of dylan/manuel's sad song, recorded in 1985, a year before his death, released posthumously in 2003, by the japanese company dreamsville records .... tis late concert had been recorded in saugerties, new york, it's called whispering pines: live at the getaway ....
the song is an anthem
long live the soulful heart of Richards vocals-
My favorite Band member RIP Richard your songs will live on forever
It hurts my heart yet heals my soul to listen to Richard sing. I wish he and Bob had done more work together.
The Getaway in ‘85, ‘86 was something else. Owned by the Road Manager for The Band many great musicians passed through and performed, some scheduled, some impromptu. Quite a time!
lovely and heartbreaking. RIP RIchard.
the voice of an angel......................still greatly missed and a sad loss. RIP Richard.
He had that voice, so pure and emotive.
I don't want to listen to this ever again, its sad how far Richard had fallen into the grasp of alcohol.
Wow beautiful
We carried you in our arms on Independence Day
And now you'd throw us all aside and put us all away
Oh, what dear daughter 'neath the sun could treat a father so?
To wait upon him hand and foot and always tell him
No
Tears of rage, tears of grief
Why must I always be the thief?
Come to me now, you know we're so alone
And life is brief
It was all very painless
When you went out to receive
All that false instruction
Which we never could believe
And now the heart is filled with gold
As if it was a purse
But, oh, what kind of love is this
Which goes from bad to worse?
Tears of rage, tears of grief
Why must I always be the thief?
Come to me now, you know we're so alone
And life is brief
We pointed you the way to go
And scratched your name in sand
Though you…
I have always known that Richard Manuel was a huge talent. This is so good to hear, thanks!!
awsome voice & talent! 4 yrs iv'e heard strains of ray charles, any 1 else?
Ken Murray of course dude
He had the nickname of "The White Ray Charles" long ago.
Ken Murray there's a bunch of great books about the Band, read them. You won't be sorry, Charles was probably his biggest influence. I was obsessed with the band in my early 20s, don't regret it for a second.
charles did not compare to him period
ray did not compare
Life is brief RIP Richard
the truth
i posted it twice already but my account (hundreds of lovingly crafted treasures from all genres and all periods of time) were twice suppressed by youtube for copyright reasons ... so here it is again ... thank you for appreciating it ...
(dylan was devastated when he learnt of manuel's suicide)
We all miss u so Richard.. R.I.P
Thank you for sharing with us. It's really a sad song, but its just because of this caracter that I like this song.
This is great but painful. . love them both.
Such a tradgedy. :(
One of the greatest singers of all time, but this barely sounds like him.Listen to Whispering Pines or Rocking Chair. You'd swear this Canadian boy was Billie Holiday's little brother.
much better
A little high there , my lovely Richard. Still some record company made some money off you after you were dead. No surprise!
Sorry but that’s a very weak and bad voice
Sorry u don’t have a clue on either tears or rage & the nuance it brings to words or how their sung. So it goes.
God bless the soul of Richard & all his Band mates who’ve passed.
I wonder what it's like to have absolutely no soul.
No you're right, his voice sounds terrible. This recording is devastating because of how far gone Richard's voice is. He's giving everything he has and he can't reach it. It's what gives this recording power. This recording unfortunately sums up The Band at that time, and Richard even more.
