Shangri La sessions were on the cusp of spinout for our dear Richard. So racked with pain and disappointment. So real. RIP Richard you were too good for this world. Definitely my favorite singer of all time. Fallen Angel.
Yes Clapton said he was a mess and he matched RM for pathos at this point but goldarn that voice is still there man whew

It's not Richard. It's Ray Charles' demo tape that he recorded for Ahmet Ertegun. I just played the video for Rob Fraboni , with whom I live, who built Shangri-La, produced No Reason to Cry, and recorded the actual outtake. You should take this down.

It's Billy Preston singing and playing the piano. Ray is not on this recording and had nothing to do with it. But yeah i agree its probably got nothing to do with No Reason To Cry.
Still a killer track. Though I swear I hear Richard because of the vocal technique. But parts of it do sound like Billy Preston.
well, I have to chime in on this. It certainly sounds like Ray singing and playing piano, When Richard did Ray it still sounded like Richard. And it does not sound like Billy. My 2 cents
@@brianmitchellmusic It is 100% not Ray. I am sure its Billy doing his best Ray impression and not Richard either. I think Richard sings BVs at a few points such as at 2:10

This confuses me, as I hear hints of Ray and Richard, and I hear _two_ people singing later on in it. Regardless of who this is, it's beautiful.

IDK anything about Richard. It sounds like Billy Preston doing his spot on impression of Ray. Billy played organ and understudied with Ray in the 60s and would imitate the genius as a lark. This is probably a rare out take.
This is like divinity scholars arguing over the origin of texts! If you got two or three Ray Charles imitators in a room together...the mind boggles, it truly does. Clapton could probably do a good Ray Charles imitation if he felt like it. Well, I guess the only person missing was ol' Bill Medley.
Clapton has recorded many Ray Charles songs including this one and theyre all pretty much identical to the originals in terms of arrangement and his vocal inflections. He's done Hard Times, Come back Baby, Losing Hand, I Want A Little Girl, Sinners Prayer

It's a dead ringer for Brother Ray and makes perfect sense Van Morrison would be hanging around (just long enough to cut a great "Stormy Monday" - perhaps as [or more?] "authoritative" than a decade earlier with Them.) I think the Last Waltz film in Sanfran was right around the corner as it's pretty much "the same gang." Is well known Van had cozied-up with Manuel, and he himself had arguably yet to attain superstar status. IOW was still legendary Lol!
Imho, Van Morrison did the ultimate cover to this classic by Brother Ray - but this is Billy Preston on lead vocals.

This is not Richard Manuel. The tone of this voice is pitched much higher than Richard's voice.
This is a real highlight from those Shangri La tapes, and it would be wonderful if it was Richard singing. But it's not, nor is it him playing the main piano part. Billy Preston was apparently at those jams, is it not him singing? Certainly the piano playing is more in his vein.
