  • I would not use Sliders. When tuning your Variator, the slider weights are not consistent with the roller weights. Seems like a gimmick to me. Tested back to back on an Icebear Maddog 139QMB 50cc. I test them with the stock variator, the Polini high speed 95mm variator and the NCY performance 89mm variator.

Your theory is correct. Sliders work as a quicker reacting weight at the same weight as a traditional roller. So what generally happens with sliders is you need to go up a G or two to match a traditional roller's RPM range (Pending the roller size. The larger sliders are more similar to a same weighted roller.); they will move inside the variator as quickly as the lighter roller while giving you the ability to push way out to the edge of the variator like a heavier roller... if your bike has the juice to spin them out there.
For most people though, if you get Dr. Pulley sliders at least, they just last quite a bit longer than a roller. Dr. Pulley is actually a plastics and composites company first that makes some scooter parts, and that is why they have such a good compound.

Ya when you were at like 8000 rpm on that second one I kinda figured you were out of power

This is pretty close to the same thing I was seeing. The sliders just aren’t a direct replacement for rollers as far as weight goes. I use a roller weight test kit for tuning. I then went to sliders and had to do it all over again since they didn’t match up.

Ikr. Why don't they name them what they are equivalent to in roller language?

Excellent explanations.. I've always been told to go up 1 g when switching to sliders. Never tried it.

Most of these guys are just slapping parts on and not tuning for powerband, so I think your correct about a poorly tuned cvt responding well to sliders.

Prob a good idea. I half way want to see what this 50 will take before it fails so I can rebuild it. So far it's strong.
