My first apartment was just across a creek and a street from an auditorium. The night I moved in, there was a music festival going on in the park on front of that auditorium, and when I went out on my back porch Bruce Hornsby was playing this song, and I could hear it very clearly. It wasn't my thing at the time as a punk rock kid, but I stayed out there for the rest of the concert. He was fantastic. On theme: That apartment was a decent-sized 2/2 and cost me $365 a month in 1989. It now goes for $1700, with no significant upgrades. The cost of it quadrupled, but minimum wage has barely doubled in that time, and that was a complex marketed to freshman college kids with those jobs. We all had roommates. It's not like that now.
Bruce Hornsby left an indelible mark on the West Coast sound of the 1980s in California. A composer, musician and singer, Bruce Hornsby is equally at home in jazz, rock, funk, classical music and blues, and is also a seasoned and acclaimed bluegrass musician. He also played with the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia, before making a name for himself on the silver screen, in the film "World's Greatest Dad", with Robin Williams, or Backdraft. The song was sampled by Tupac on the track "Changes" ft Talent released in 98. Thanks and Happy New Year !!!!!
Bruce is definitely talented , shows music has no borders with the fact that Tupac sampled this. Kinda like when artists from two different genres collaborate & it works out perfectly ❤
Bruce Hornsby, a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, is my all time favorite person in Rock and Roll, and a great musician, songwriter and human being. No wonder the Good Ol' Grateful Dead wanted him to play with them for a couple of years in the early 1990's. Had the pleasure of seeing him play live on many occasions, both with The Range, and when he played with The Dead, and he was always the same, FANTASTIC. Thanks Teez, hope you enjoyed it, sounds like you did.
A fine reaction to a fine song written and played by a fine man. Thank you. Elton John said Bruce Hornsby was the most naturally talented pianist he had ever met. There you are. It's just the way it is.
TOTP stands for Top of the Pops, a live music show in the UK. All the hugest stars played on there like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes...really just every great artist. You only would hope that more people of ignorance would take this song to heart as Bruce intended it.He is a magnificent story teller and awesome on the piano as well
This was a really huge hit, on MTV 24/7. No doubt Tupac saw it on MTV or heard it on the radio, everyone knew it back then. Bruce Hornsby is very well known for his piano skills, he has a recognizable sound to his playing that you know right away if he's playing on a record for another artist. Glad you liked it!

I heard Bruce got zero credit for it. Later Bruce introduced himself as a songwriter for Tupac. That's why none of these reactors had a clue where the song originated. Black Pegasus was astonished that Tupac's song didn't lead him back to Bruce when he heard it.
Ha! The gormless British teenagers talking behind! TOTP ("Top Of The Pops" - weekly BBC show that ran for decades. Had a massive audience back then) was mimed back at this time. As time went on, more acts did it live.
Great reaction, Teez. This has long been a favorite of mine. Another song that will have you smiling with recognition from the opening bars is "Woman to Woman," by Joe Cocker, one that has been sampled numerous times by numerous artists. Keep the goodies coming!
